DPM Chapter 85-The Death of Luo Ying Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Luo Ying propped her elbows on the railing, gazing upwards: “Would you say the Federation considers the Night Shard to be their number one enemy? Therefore, in order to deal with him, the Federation should do whatever it takes. But it could be said that this is natural selection’s work. A new, stronger humanity has emerged. But no one wants to admit it. No one is resigned to withdrawing from the limelight of nature’s stage.”

“Professor Luo, you’re overthinking cause you live alone.” The young general’s hand was in his pocket, gripping a ring box he prepared a long time ago. It’d been four or five years since he’d gotten it, yet he was still trying to muster the courage to offer it.

“Mmm.” Luo Ying made a soft noise. “Perhaps our human life is too short to ever truly get to the bottom of anything. I really want to know, if someone possessed eternal life, what would his destiny be like?”

“You can surely do it,” the general was full of faith. “Fifteen days from now, you’ll be able to research completely independently.”

Luo Ying gave another little laugh, shaking her head once more before sinking back into her boundless contemplation, only to have the young man break it again.

The still single general got down on one knee, summoned his bravery, and held out his ring: “Luo Ying, I……I’ve liked you for a long time. I think, I think I want to go through life with you. Marry me, alright? I know you had an unhappy marriage before, but I can protect you, I promise. I’d never let anyone……”

Luo Ying broke off the general’s proposal by turning her back to him and silently walking away. Then she stopped and came halfway back, gently shaking her head at the general, whose disappointment was etched across his face: “I’m seven years older than you, and I’ve no interest in romance. I don’t intend to ever get married again. You’re a good man, but my life……I won’t squander it on such matters.”

Having given her refusal, Luo Ying returned to her laboratory. The formalities were already complete for Luoshi Research. She only had to get through the next fifteen days. After that all research and operations would completely independent, and it would be her foundation to keep.

Next she went into her own room, opened the isolation chamber, took out an injection tube and shot the contents into her veins.

In the split second the fluid entered her bloodstream, Luo Ying’s face contorted with pain. She fell to the floor, almost choking from the agony.

Half a minute later, she sprung up from the ground, seemingly radiant and bursting with energy, the activity of her brain cells tripled.

She called her assistant in, stating in a tranquil tone: “I’ve injected myself with the No. 1 injection.”

The assistant froze in shock, trying to make sense of what they’d just heard.

“Not much of my life is left. I have twenty days of rapid mental activity, after which I’ll die quite thoroughly. During this time I’ll work on the gene bomb. Have them give me back Qinglong’s body. For any other affairs, don’t bother me.” Luo Ying spoke quickly, she moved quickly. In an instant she already had her tools properly laid out.

“The radioactive decay of the drug will take about sixteen days. If I……don’t die right away, please don’t let me sink into idiocy. I mean, if my death doesn’t come naturally, please help me.”

Finished with her instructions, Luo Ying closed the door of her laboratory in her assistant’s face.

In the following days, no one was allowed in or out of Luo Ying’s laboratory except for her assistant.

If the mutants replaced their genes at a rapid rate, if they could consume the genes of other species, could they not have eternal life?

In that case, could Ye Fan, given an endless lifetime, come to know everything he wanted to know?

While Luo Ying was starting the final research project of her life, Ouyang Yi headed a delegation down to Earth. Disembarking from the Federal spaceship, he once again met with the Night Shard.

The moment Ouyang Yi set his slippery foot on Earth soil, he had a bad premonition. And he was proven right, for after Mozun introduced the Federal delegation to everyone, the mutants promptly seized all Federal communication equipment and placed the delegation in solitary confinement.

One member of the delegation, suffering through what he woefully considered the most awful hour of his life, cracked. He started spilling passwords, codes, pass-phrases and anything else that occurred to him.

Soon enough six others were squealing too, proclaiming their eagerness to cooperate. The benevolent Night Shard didn’t make things too embarrassing for them. They were taken away by Wu Xingyun, later becoming permanent residents of Earth.

But first they sat together in the meeting room, discussing how to achieve unity with Liu Meng, the mutant representative, while the scene was broadcast live to the Federation.

Ouyang Yi had to settle for being a captive in a dark cellar, nowhere to be seen.

He persevered for three days until finally disclosing the cause of Dai Rong’s death, the Federation’s plans, and how he disguised himself as Dai Rong for the video calls.

Believing that spilling his guts would be enough, Ouyang Yi thought that he’d forgiven by the Night Shard like the other Federal people. He’d just have to content himself with continuing his life on Earth.

However, Mozun had no such intention.

Ouyang Yi abandoned his pride and begged piteously, the initial traces of his Federation arrogance fading as time passed. He was willing to sell anything, crawl on his belly in the dust, if it meant the Night Shard would see him and give him a few good words.

Peng Dawei, tasked with questioning Ouyang Yi, ended up running back to Mozun, full of grievances: “That Ouyang Yi has been clutching my leg and crying for two hours! What are you going to do about him?!”

Mozun was quite undisturbed: “How did Qinglong die? Let Ouyang Yi die the same way.”

“Oh.” Peng Dawei turned, ready to comply with orders. But he only made it a few paces before Mozun called him back.

Waving a hand, Mozun told Peng Dawei: “Forget about that. Just kill it directly and be done with it.”

After Ouyang Yi’s death, Mozun made another appearance on the huge screen in the Federation conference chamber. The Federation already associated his face with that of a demon. Everytime he emerged from the shadows, they was terror-stricken.

“A life for a life. That’s how it’s been down through the ages.” The Night Shard’s voice was calm, “It was Ouyang Yi who came up the vicious plan regarding Qinglong. Therefore he was killed by me. As for the other accomplices, let them say goodbye to their friends and families, and then commit suicide. If they do so, I won’t look into this matter any further.”

Ignoring the fiend on the screen before him, the Federation president turned his head to his aide: “How long before the ship is ready to jump?”

“It’ll be finished in five days. And next it’ll have to be tested. We’re looking at least fifteen days until the official voyage……”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake! Ouyang Yi’s death was worthless, didn’t buy us nearly enough time……Never mind, how’s the military doing on that gene bomb?”

The aide consulted his notebook: “That……apparently……they say it’ll be done today?”

“Today? Will it kill all the mutants?” The President feeling awfully concerned about what they’d gain from the gene bomb.

“I’m afraid……no, it won’t. They tell me it’ll only take away their ability to reproduce. It’s best to think of it as a long-term strategy……”

The next second, the aide’s communicator pinged, he listened carefully, then started nodding enthusiastically: “Good, that’s really good, great!”

When the communication was over, the aide immediately sidled up to the President’s ear: “That Luoshi Research scientist is too good. They’ve made the gene bomb specifically targeted at mutants. They claim it’ll cause radioactive decay to their genes, meaning……after it’s detonated, it won’t affect the earth’s environment in any way, but all the mutants will be paralyzed for at least a month!”

His confidence amply restored, the President sneered at Mozun on the screen: “Ha! Who do you think you are? You killed our hero, it’ll be you who pays with his life!”

“Let me warn you! If you futilely provoke the Federation, the Federation doesn’t fear war with you monsters!”

When Luo Ying walked out of her laboratory, she looked like someone in the bloom of youth, bursting with vitality. But she knew her descent would come very soon. So in her last moments of vigor, she went to her favorite place. Through the observatory’s glass window, she gazed at the distant Earth.

Yet her reflection stared back at her.

The spring had gone. The hair hung snowy white, the two eyes sunk into bloodshot red. The body thin, the cheeks hollow, the neck and eyes splayed with crawling wrinkles.

Eventually the glass showed Luo Ying someone walking up behind her. The military’s highest commander, the Marshal.

“It’s pretty, isn’t it?” The Marshal regarded Earth. “Now that the talks between the Federation and the Night Shard have fallen through, we’ll be sending your gene bomb and a nuclear warhead to Earth together. All those mutants will die.”

Radiant beams seemed to surround the Earth, lighting the distance. It had been the home of humanity and now humanity would destroy it.

“We’ll drop the bombs where we’ve already detected another nuclear bomb down on Earth.” The Marshal spoke calmly, “Rest assured, we’ll give the mutants no chance to ever return. We’ve got long interstellar voyages to sail, we’ll brook no rivals.”

Luo Ying merely sighed from the bottom of her heart. She could foresee some matters. Only there were so many things she couldn’t know.

She hadn’t predicted that the military, in order to ensure maximum causalities, would have her manufacture a gene bomb to use in conjunction with one of their few remaining nuclear warheads, previously hoarded in case of encountering possible dangerous alien life, just in order to wipe out their own compatriots.

What the double effects of the gene bomb and the nuclear radiation would be, Luo Ying couldn’t discern. She wished she could foretell whether the mutants’ variations would follow the directions she’d designed them to go.

One thing she did know for sure. If only her gene bomb was dropped, ordinary people stood a chance of surviving. But the double bombing meant that ordinary people on Earth would pass away, never to revive.

Feeling something in her nostril, Luo Ying wiped it with a hand. Her nose was bleeding.

Body weakly collapsing, Luo Ying landed on the floor. The Marshal, alarmed, quickly propped her up, bellowing: “Doctor, doctor!”

Luo Ying slowly shook her head: “It’s useless. In order to make the gene bomb, I injected a stimulant. I……I’ll die soon. Please, before I go, promise me the military will keep its word. Luoshi Research will be independent from now on. It’s my last request.”

" "

The Marshal didn’t listen. He was too busy having Luo Ying sent to a medical ward, and then having another medical ward made for her specifically on the new ship.

Three nights later, a gunshot echoed through the ward. By the time people got there, Luo Ying’s brains were already scattered by a large-caliber pistol. She couldn’t be saved.

She left behind a note. Although no one grasped its true meaning.

“In ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ there are witches who curse and fairies who rectify the curse. Which one am I?”

Everyone just choose to believe that it was guilt that killed Luo Ying. Qinglong’s death had been too much for her, and topped with the task of making a weapon against the Night Shard, she’d crumbled under the psychological pressure.

Despite her great contributions to the Federation, that wasn’t reason enough to give a seat to her dead body on their new ship.

They placed her in a titanium alloy coffin, floating her out into the cosmos, to sleep forever amongst the stars.

A long time later, there was an attempt to find her body. However, the records had already disappeared. There was no way to plot her original trajectory, and even less to find where she’d drifted to, alone in the vast universe.
