DPM Chapter 86-Mutating Again
Translated by Snowfall77

When the Federation suddenly became unyielding in their talks with Earth, Mozun immediately knew something bad was coming.

Without hesitating, he ordered everyone to take defensive measures and find shelter. Mozun figured that the Federation would, at most, throw a few nuclear warheads Earth’s way. As for his own safety, since he’d already experienced a nuclear explosion, he was unconcerned.

What he hadn’t expected was that that something else fell along with the nuclear bomb.

No one knew what it was.

It dispersed in mid-air, a heavy red mist shrouding everything. And like the thick Saer fog from years before, the red mist left nothing untouched.

Mozun tried to shut the red mist out, but the red mist descended on him like some sentient being, drilling into his ears, his skin.

Even the mutants in the underground bunkers perceived a wrongness as it crept in on them.

While a mutant who hadn’t made it underground fell to the dirt, twitching. Reeling under the double attack of the gene bomb and the nuclear explosion, it only took a split second for the mutant to go into shock.

The Earth wailed in anguish, leaves falling from their trees. Where the red mist passed, the ground became barren. People lost their consciousness for days, their skin cracking open, their bones broken, enduring the torments of a new hell.

The reek of blood hung in the air and no one was capable of escaping.

Five days later, the red mist cleared. The sun’s rays finally spread back over the Earth.

Mozun had watched his own skin split open and peel, watched as his body grew a hard carapace, and finally observed new skin grow until it covered the carapace.

“What the hell happened?!” Other mutants woke up, finding new changes in their bodies.

Yet before they could even thoroughly understand what had occurred to themselves, they discovered something far more distressing—the ordinary people, the ones who’d survived the last days with great difficulty……they couldn’t wake up.

Countless mutants searched for their loved ones, their family, but found nothing other than death and grief.

Mozun too frantically searched everywhere for Wu Xingyun. When Mozun had seen the shining white light descending from the sky before, he’d known the Federation was doing something evil. Without even thinking, he’d thrown Wu Xingyun into the underground bunker. Only now, entering the bunker to find his lover, he was surrounded by people bitterly crying.

“Yun! Yun!” Deeply apprehensive, Mozun shouted the soldier’s name. There were too many people, the space too congested. Stretching his perceptions to the fullest, Mozun still couldn’t locate Wu Xingyun.

Unfolding in front of his eyes was the scene of other mutants, one by one, turning over the bodies of those they’d loved. Followed by the agonized shock, the tears, and the hatred.

Mozun’s footsteps stumbled. Then he spotted the figure of Wu Xingyun propped in the corner ahead.

Forcefully pushing through the crowd, Mozun bent over Wu Xingyun, though Mozun didn’t dare turn the soldier over.

Mozun was deathly afraid all he’d see was his beloved bleeding to death.

Liu Meng had also been searching for Wu Xingyun, just a step behind Mozun. Where Mozun hesitated, Liu Meng did not. Roughly shoving Mozun to one side, Liu Meng flipped Wu Xingyun’s body.

Wu Xingyun appeared unconscious, and Liu Meng shook him, yelling: “Yun, Yun, you wake up! Wake up!”

Only Wu Xingyun didn’t wake up. Liu Meng held a finger under the soldier’s nose. There was no breath.

Mozun sat on the ground, eyes glazed over. For the first time he felt that his life, whatever victories gained, held no importance.

Staring dully at Wu Xingyun, Mozun abruptly got up, yanked Liu Meng away, and picked up Wu Xingyun. Carrying the soldier, Mozun numbly walked outside.

“Yun, wake up!”

“I’m not dead, so you……can’t die……”

Holding Wu Xingyun in his arms, Mozun’s heart was gripped by an unfathomable pain, twisting inside him until he could hardly breathe.
Until a faint red light, radiating from Wu Xingyun’s forehead, slowly enveloped the soldier.

As the red light passed over him, his body started turning transparent. First the head faded away, next the neck, arms, legs, feet.

Mozun couldn’t process what was happening before him. He couldn’t see Wu Xingyun, but he could still feel the solid flesh of the soldier in his embrace.

“Yun!?” Mozun called for his lover. He could hear a familiar inhale and exhale, but he still couldn’t detect Wu Xingyun with his eyes.

“Are you here?” Mozun plaintively inquired. “Where are you?”

Unhurriedly opening his eyes, the first thing Wu Xingyun saw was Mozun with a grief-stricken appearance. Wu Xingyun’s heart constricted at the mutant’s expression, while also wondering at the same time if Mozun had gone blind: “You, what’s wrong with you? I……I’m right in front of you!” Wu Xingyun reached out a hand, intending to stroke Mozun’s face, only to utterly shock himself.

Wu Xingyun bowed his head to examine his body. Yelping in surprise, he leapt out of Mozun’s arms.

" "

“What’s going on? What happened to me?! Why can’t I see myself?!” Having never encountered such a thing, confusion overwhelmed Wu Xingyun.

While Mozun was almost crying with joy that Wu Xingyun was alright. The soldier wasn’t dead, he was just……invisible. He still lived. That was all that mattered.

Reaching out a hand, Mozun wanted to hold Wu Xingyun, but his fingers closed on empty air.

“Yun, don’t worry. Don’t worry, remember……remember the secrets we got from Wang Ruoxu’s book.” Mozun still couldn’t see Wu Xingyun and he couldn’t sense Wu Xingyun’s magnetic field. If Wu Xingyun chose to hold his breath, Mozun wouldn’t be able to locate him at all.

After his initial alarm, Wu Xingyun started calming down. He began to work the energy in his body the way Mozun had suggested.

Usually, whenever Wu Xingyun had tried to practice with his dantian, the moment he touched upon it, he suffered a great deal of pain.

Now, for the first time, he could smoothly run the energy through himself. As he did so, his body gradually became visible again.

Mozun’s tone grew far more relaxed: “Apparently……there must have been something in that red mist. Something specially targeted at mutants. What though?”

Liu Meng had found them again. Watching Wu Xingyun’s shifting visibility, Liu Meng came to his own conclusions: “If I’m not mistaken, it must have been that gene bomb that Ouyang Yi blabbed about. However……I suspect……I talked with other mutants just now. Those who aren’t lost in their grief have discovered that their abilities have unprecedently increased tenfold, even a hundredfold.”

Liu Meng stopped talking for a moment, thoroughly thinking it over: “Still, it’s impossible that the Federation would help us in any way. The only thing they’d want that gene bomb to do is kill us. Not increase our strength like this.”

Mozun softly closed his eyes, his mind showing him a familiar figure.

“It was her.” Mozun was certain. “It had to have been her! Except, if she helped me, the Federation won’t let her off. No matter how valuable she is……”

Wu Xingyun didn’t involve himself in the conversation, instead focusing on managing the flow of his energy.

Who could have guessed he’d experience the feeling of being a ghost soldier again, a couple of thousand years in the past?

Even though it was completely different. In the future, a ghost soldier relied on the energy of his suit to be invisible. Once the suit’s energy ran out, the invisibility failed.

But now, the combination of the radiation and the gene bomb had apparently wrought a permanent change in his body—invisibility had become his resting state. He would only be visible when he expended to the energy to be so?

Wu Xingyun experimented. He was wearing clothes, and they too turned invisible when he did.

He picked up a stone, held it in the palm of his hand. When he vanished, it vanished.

The ground beneath his feet, though—it wasn’t turning invisible. Why not?

Mulling it over, Wu Xingyun crouched down and put his hand to the dirt.

Something seemingly mystical happened. Like his hand was the center of a circle, all the ground within a one meter radius disappeared. He’d created a visual void.

Even as he was talking with Mozun, Liu Meng’s eyes had never left Wu Xingyun for a second. When Wu Xingyun suddenly vanished and an apparent pit opened up, Liu Meng immediately pointed: “Mozun, look!”

Mozun turned his head to see. Wu Xingyun slowly stood up, his body gradually reappearing, his new nature revealed.

“What did you just do?” Mozun demanded. “You…… turned the ground invisible? The radiation and that gene bomb couldn’t have done this……”

Wu Xingyun just nodded and inquired: “You still have Wang Ruoxu’s special book, right? Let’s open it up and take a look.”

Mozun nodded back, but said: “Let’s wait and see. It’s not only the two of us, many mutants have made massive gains in their abilities. The Federation has killed our families, our loved ones. And now they’re preparing to flee after perpetrating such a crime! We……won’t let that happen.”

One day later, all the mutants had assembled by Mozun’s request, each one testing their abilities.

Mozun hadn’t excluded himself. He’d performed a comprehensive personal assessment.

The sorrow and the rage from the deaths of the ordinary ones. Abilities surprisingly and stratospherically rising in strength. Both had come simultaneously. There was nothing to hold back the mutants’ vengeance.

“How many of you can break through the atmosphere?” Mozun asked, towering in the rubble caused by the nuclear bomb.

Many mutants raised a hand. Liu Meng quickly counted no less than three hundred.

“It’s time for the Federation to pay for the evils they’ve committed!” Mozun’s voice rang out, thick with anger, and not one mutant opposed going to war with the Federation.

“No one, after carrying out such heinous acts, should be able to escape to a new haven! We leave in one hour. We’ll let the Federation know we can’t be killed!”

Finished speaking, Mozun returned to his home and made preparations.

“If they don’t surrender and admit their guilt, we will never stop.” Mozun muttered to himself.

There wasn’t another soul to be seen or sensed in the room. Mozun thought he was alone, for Wu Xingyun had been nowhere to be found.
But then Mozun felt someone embrace him from behind. Wu Xingyun’s body slowly became transparently visible, only to fade away again.

“I’ll go with you,” Wu Xingyun told Mozun. “Normally, I didn’t have a way to protect myself, now though……Maybe I can protect you, make you even more formidable. An invisible Night Shard, a name that will make anyone tremble.”

A hard smile formed on Mozun’s lips. He bent his head, trying to kiss Wu Xingyun’s mouth, but only managed to kiss Wu Xingyun’s hair instead. Though the thick stubble poking his lips very much pleased Mozun too.

“I can’t break through the atmosphere on my own power,” Wu Xingyun told Mozun, “However, using Wang Ruoxu’s book, I’ve practiced the way to navigate in space without breathing or a protective suit.”

Mozun hesitated for a moment, before reaching for Wu Xingyun’s hand: “Good. Let’s go together and bring Dai Rong’s body back home. We’ll defeat those self-righteous, contemptible bastards!”
