DPM Chapter 90-Kiss
Translated by Snowfall77

The young soldier hadn’t aged at all. He stood there, looking exactly the same as he had so many years ago. The same voice. The same expression.

Wen Nuo was rendered speechless, only snapping out of it when his cigarette burned up to his fingers. Flicking the cigarette butt aside, Wen Nuo uncertainly sounded out the person before him: “Is it……is it you, Wu Xingyun?”

“It’s me, Company Commander.” Wu Xingyun spoke softly.

Lips slightly trembling, Wen Nuo wanted to reach and touch the soldier, but didn’t dare. What if it was just an illusion he’d conjured up?

So it was Wu Xingyun who extended a hand towards Wen Nuo: “It’s me, I’m alive. I’ve come back.”

Wen Nuo grazed Wu Xingyun’s hand with his fingertips.

It was a warm human hand, the right temperature for someone living.

“You……didn’t die?” Still in shock, Wen Nuo couldn’t believe it, staring blankly at Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun shook his head: “No. Many things have happened since we last saw each other. It’d take me days to tell you all of it. But I’m not dead and I’ve never blamed you. So you should stop blaming yourself.”

Wen Nuo just kept gazing at Wu Xingyun in stupefaction, unable to verbalize the potent emotions surging inside him.

There were so many things Wen Nuo wanted to say, yet the words wouldn’t leave his mouth.

In the end, he got to his feet, standing at attention and giving Wu Xingyun a proper military greeting, like one welcoming a teammate back to the unit.

Snap! Wen Nuo made a salute, unsuccessfully trying to hide his feelings with a calm tone: “Welcome back, Sergeant. You……you’re home.”
How many years had it been? Wu Xingyun didn’t move, suddenly lost in thought. Ten years, a whole decade gone. The things he’d seen, the people he’d met, the struggle for survival, all in the darkness of the last days of Earth.

All that time, he’d always wanted to return home. Yet he’d been afraid of missing of it.

He’d been born in the Federation. Raised in the Federation.

He’d spent his youth in the military, had his personality molded by the Federation army.

And now, once again, Wu Xingyun was hearing the same words his superior officer had said to him every time he’d returned from the field. A unbreakable connection that went as deep as the blood, it moved Wu Xingyun’s heart ineffably, his eyes reddening.

Wu Xingyun put out his hand for Wen Nuo to shake: “Company Commander.”

Balking for just a second, Wen Nuo also reached out, shaking Wu Xingyun’s hand. A small happy smile coming over his face, Wen Nuo said: “I’ll contact the government right away, let them know you’re still alive. Your parents are going to be overjoyed when they find out.”
“If you want to return home, you should be able to go back……Just be prepared, things are a little different now……” Wen Nuo added.

Slightly alarmed, Wu Xingyun asked: “Why? What’s happening there?”

Wen Nuo hesitated, not knowing if this was the right time to tell Wu Xingyun about current affairs. Wen Nuo didn’t know where Wu Xingyun had been and what had happened to him, but Wu Xingyun didn’t seem particularly worried or gloomy. The planet Liu-Mang-Xing, where Wu Xingyun’s parents lived, had fallen to the Alliance. Would this news make Wu Xingyun sad? The Federation had been suffering defeat after defeat to the Demon Army, the Alliance singing victory song after victory song. Wen Nuo wasn’t sure how Wu Xingyun would react to this situation.

Should Wen Nuo speak? Would the newly-returned Wu Xingyun be able to withstand the blow?

Wen Nuo couldn’t find the words and Wu Xingyun’s face grew more concerned.

" "

Yet as Wen Nuo was wavering, a shadowy black figure noiselessly appeared on the rooftop.

Wu Xingyun sensed something immediately. Cocking his head, he saw the man standing in the corner.

The breath in Wu Xingyun’s chest suddenly seemed stifled.

An extreme silence abruptly descended, not a small movement to be heard anywhere. But Wu Xingyun’s face had an expression Wen Nuo had never seen before, the soldier’s eyes filled with unlimited trust, a gentle smile on the lips.

Following Wu Xingyun’s gaze, Wen Nuo turned to look at whatever was behind him. And saw the nightmare of the entire Federation.

The Night Shard was standing at the corner of the roof, one side of his mouth hitched up in an indolent smirk, and his hands stuck in his pockets to hide their trembling.

Before Wu Xingyun could say anything, Mozun declared: “Don’t worry, I’ve been looking after your parents.”

“Oh.” All the previous worry vanished from Wu Xingyun’s face. Wen Nuo couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The small soldier who wore his heart on his sleeve truly wasn’t anxious anymore.

Wen Nuo felt like someone had cut the ground out from under him. What in the world had occurred during the twenty years Wu Xingyun had been lost?

Mozun took one step forward, keeping himself steady, his long black coat blending his form with the darkness. His appearance was still the same it’d been thousands of years ago, though in his eyes there was boundless longing, accompanied by accumulated wisdom from living so many years.

Walking up to Wen Nuo, Mozun yanked Wen Nuo’s hand from Wu Xingyun’s. Voice hoarse like sandpaper, Mozun said: “Sometimes, even when I miss you, I think that when I see you once again, I must……slap you hard in the face.”

Wu Xingyun looked up into Mozun’s eyes.

They were eyes that Wu Xingyun was used to gazing into. Just a day ago, they’d been together on the Federation’s moon base, finding Luo Ying’s last note and Dai Rong’s corpse.

Then, in a blink of an eyes, thousands of years had passed.

Endless life had turned Mozun’s eyes deep and dark, like burning stars in the night.

“You……you’ve hated me, haven’t you?” Wu Xingyun bowed his head, knowing full well the grief Mozun had endured.

The memory of the mutant who’d made anguished wails of sorrow in a room full of photographs the day after being married had always been engraved in Wu Xingyun’s heart. Later, Wu Xingyun had firmly believed that he’d die on Earth, another victim of the last days. Therefore he’d never spoken to Mozun about the future. Who could have expected that he wouldn’t actually die?! Yet, if he’d told Mozun about the future, maybe Mozun wouldn’t have endured thousands of years of despair and desperation. Probably, when they’d become newlyweds, things would have turned out better. They wouldn’t have harmed each other the way they had.

Mozun slowly closed in on Wu Xingyun: “Yes, I’ve hated you……I’ve wanted to bite you into pieces, swallow you into my belly. You……your heart is too hard! In all those years we were together, you never told me anything……”

Wu Xingyun’s wonderfully familiar scent was drilling into Mozun’s nose, about to tear the mutant’s heart apart. The soldier he’d been yearning after for so long was right in front of him. Mozun’s heartbeat pounded, his eyes tinged, and his breathing was turning heavy.

“You divulged nothing! And I even……It took me a long time, but I figured out what kind of asshole your husband is!” Mozun ground out his words between gritted teeth. Realizing that Wu Xingyun was about to try and slip away, Mozun pulled the solider to his chest.

“I hate you! I’m itching to……crush you into my body!” Mozun’s tone was ferocious. Then, giving Wu Xingyun no chance to respond, while also completely disregarding the onlooker, Mozun kissed the soldier ruthlessly.

Twenty years of bitter waiting, every day and night spent in remorse, a deep-rooted torment that couldn’t be shaken, Mozun vented it out at last.

He bit at the soldier’s lips, wanted to devour. If Mozun could consume the other, maybe he could dissolve his hate and regret.

After his initial startlement, Wu Xingyun remembered Wen Nuo was still there. Feeling embarrassed, Wu Xingyun tried to push Mozun away. But Mozun wouldn’t let go, using even more force to hold Wu Xingyun tighter.

" "

A rapid exhale of air, puffed in Wu Xingyun’s face, and Mozun sealed his lips to Wu Xingyun’s again. Wu Xingyun stopped struggling.

He returned Mozun’s embrace and responded to the mutant’s kiss.

They held each other closely, their breathing intermingled, forgetting everything else.

The endless waiting, the interminable time passed, made the kisses linger. Licking, nipping, invading, every inch plundered, not letting one bit off. As if all their time apart had never happened and they were as they’d been before.

Standing to the side, Wen Nuo watched how Wu Xingyun ardently responded to Mozun. It was then that Wen Nuo understood how thoroughly he’d lost.

He quietly left the rooftop, going back to sit in the observatory.

Wen Nuo very much wanted to report to the Federation what was happening on this godforsaken planet. But as soon as his finger touched the communication button, he drew it back.

Laughing sourly to himself, Wen Nuo lit a cigarette.

The way the current situation between the Alliance and the Federation was, even if Wen Nuo did inform the Federation that Mozun on this planet, the Federation probably couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

Besides……Wen Nuo had killed Wu Xingyun once already. He didn’t want to do it again.

His cigarette soon burned out. Wen Nuo lit a third one, and when that was finished, yet another.

Finally, he threw the empty pack in the trash basket, viciously kicked the table leg, and slumped back in his chair, utterly depressed.

Wu Xingyun had deep feelings for Wen Nuo. However it was the emotion between a soldier and a revered officer. It’d never be anything more.

Up on the rooftop, who knew how long it took Mozun to let go of Wu Xingyun. Mozun whispered in Wu Xingyun’s ear like someone sleep-talking: “Yun, I……you finally came.”

Wu Xingyun patted Mozun’s back: “You……How did you come to be here?”

“I’ve been here waiting for you, of course……” Mozun murmured, “I thought I would die from missing you. I was even afraid I wouldn’t live long enough to see you……” Mozun gently took Wu Xingyun’s face in his hands. “Don’t leave me again, alright? You didn’t leave me then, when we first met, don’t do it again……”

“I understand.”

Kisses rained on Wu Xingyun’s lips, penetrating deeper and deeper, as Mozun thought he could absorb Wu Xingyun’s soul.

His mouth swelling, Wu Xingyun also felt Mozun’s hand probing into his clothes. Wu Xingyun managed to pull himself back and gasp: “Stop it……”

Mozun was hit with a burst of dismay. He peered at Wu Xingyun who was straightening his mussed clothes.

“It’s not safe here……” Wu Xingyun said. “We can talk about everything when we get home.”

Reassured and keeping his hands mostly to himself, Mozun gave Wu Xingyun one more deep kiss, then said huskily: “Good. Let’s go home.”
