DPM Chapter 98-Collision Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

In the Federal Council chamber the ongoing debate was whether or not to accept the Night Shard’s three conditions for a truce and coalition.

The first two conditions were bad enough. The third condition demanded the most.

Severe punishment for war criminals meant the Federation negating their own heroes, even those from thousands of years ago like Ouyang Yi.

Putting the Federation army under the Night Shard’s command meant the Federation was handing over all their military power. They’d never have their own army again.

And lastly, establishing a new Federation government with a candidate approved by the Night Shard was only creating a puppet government.

Such a condition was no different from destroying the Federation.

Wen Nuo stood outside the door, quietly listening to the ongoing argument. He was fairly certain that the one councilor who kept recommending acceptance of the Night Shard’s conditions was in fact a spy planted by Mozun.

Anger burned in Wen Nuo’s heart at the words he heard. But he was no longer the rash young man he’d been some twenty years past.

His face expressionless, Wen Nuo pushed the door open and spoke simply to the council: “Greetings everyone. The Night Shard appeared on our Federation border of the Milky Way. I believe……there might be one reason for his sudden arrival there. That would be that he is of the same race as the Saer. Perhaps we should not regard him as human. And, if we give in to him, we could bring a great catastrophe to humanity.”

President Aili raised an impeccable eyebrow: “How so?”

Slowly Wen Nuo recounted everything he’d seen, including Mozun’s fighting moves and his dreadful force.

Wen Nuo was the first eyewitness of Mozun’s true strength in about a thousand years who’d been able to return home alive. He strove to be eminently calm, yet his voice still slightly trembled when he spoke of the dueling lights: “I watched it carefully. Their style of movement, their force, it was identical. I don’t think the Night Shard is our friend. And if the Saer are our friends, we wouldn’t need to unite with the Alliance at all.”

Yet Wen Nuo’s report could only do so much. When he was finished, he’d inadvertently convinced most of the council of one thing—that in order to live, they’d need to rely on the Night Shard. Because if the Saer caught them, they’d indubitably be dead.

Taking a minute to think, President Aili finally said: “General Wen, we’re ordinary humans. We’re weak. How do you think we should face an enemy against which we are hopelessly outmatched?”

“Choose the Night Shard.” Wen Nuo could hardly believe the words coming out of his mouth. Those who heard immediately sighed deeply.

“I’m not saying we completely acquiesce to his excessive demands. But if cooperation is necessary, I suggest we cooperate with the Night Shard. We absolutely should not let him create a puppet government, nor should we hand our troops over to him. We still need to preserve our independence, to say the least……think of a means to keep it.”

“And that nonsense about punishing war criminals……we can’t do that either.” Wen Nuo’s tone was serene as he voiced his thoughts. “Those are our heroes, they represent the spirit of the Federation. They dedicated themselves to the Federation, even gave their lives. They’re for us to respect, not to……drag out their corpses to be whipped.”

“The Night Shard has so much power. If he truly wanted to annihilate us, given his current abilities, he could achieve it with little effort. However he hasn’t done so. Why? Because he’s benevolent?”

“No, it’s because……we have something in our hands that he wants.”

“You think it’s high-end science and technology?” President Aili queried thoughtfully.

“Yes.” Wen Nuo straightened his collar. “Despite the Alliance’s increasing victories over us, we still possess the most core technology. Our bioengineering is extremely advanced. They say the first thing the Night Shard does when he seizes a Federation planet is locate the biologists. He wants to solve the mutants’ inability to reproduce. But we still have the best biologists on our side.”

“We don’t need to humble ourselves, let alone put lower our heads into the dirt.” Wen Nuo started to sum up his view. “Our Federation still has power that should not be sold short. We should not talk with the Night Shard as kneeling supplicants, but as equals. What’s more, it’s only recently that the Night Shard begin treating ordinary Federal citizens leniently. A crow is never the whiter for washing itself often. Can a demon change what it is? What happens if we submissively hand over everything and the Night Shard suddenly reverts to his old behavior? What would we do then?”

The council chamber took Wen Nuo’s remarks to heart and drew up new terms for an Alliance-Federation peace agreement.

They would be willing to open up all their technological and scientific resources to the Alliance, fight alongside the Alliance, and furnish firepower and weapons. What the Federation couldn’t relinquish was control of the military and governmental independence.

But when the Federal diplomats showed up at the Alliance border hoping for a face-to-face with the Night Shard, they were instead received by someone else.

Liu Meng, master of logistics.

Seemingly uninterested in what the Federal diplomats had to say, Liu Meng simply told them—the Night Shard was not available. Either the Federation could do as Mozun had specified before or they could wait until he returned to talk further.

When the Federation asked just when that would be, Liu Meng lost his patience and threw them out.

“Extremely arrogant.” Wen Nuo thumped the table with his fist. It was half a year since that last battle. Even if Mozun deserved to die, the least he could do was damn well come back already!

In the past six months, although there been no sign of Saer soldiers, many Saer probes had been detected on the Milky Way borders.

The Federation was under attack, back to the wall. Now the Night Shard, who’d supposedly once lived on the same Earth as they had, was taking advantage of their crisis by pretending to be unavailable.

Still, despite Wen Nuo’s indignation, the Federation was out of options. And to top it all off, the Federal soldiers who’d survived that battle were prattling far and wide about the great spectacle they’d seen that day, resulting in countless Federal soldiers trying to defect to the Demon Army. Not even harsh martial discipline wasn’t enough to deter them.

“Are we……really done for?” Wen Nuo sighed to himself. “If there’s anything watching over us, please don’t let the Night Shard succeed in his schemes. Please protect us.”

Wen Nuo didn’t believe in anything supernatural, but he couldn’t help praying to empty air.
