Chapter 37 – Cunning Long San

Long San lightened his strength and planted light kisses on her.

Fengning gradually followed his lead, wound her arms around his neck, and stood on tiptoes to accommodate him.  The two people became more entangled and intense and could not stop.

He kissed her on the lips, kissed her cheeks, and pecked her slender neck.  She blinked and slowly regain her awareness to find that she was led astray by him again.  She pushed him away fiercely and seeing his lustful eyes and moist lips, she felt ashamed and annoyed.

Pointing at him, she said.  “You……you…….”  But after a long time had passed, she still could not utter a complete sentence.

Long San smiled as he looked at her current appearance.  She became even more annoyed and finally, she spewed out a curse.  “Pig!”

He burst into loud laughter.  “You’re a pig too.”

“I’m not!”  Fengning stomped her foot and refused to admit it.

He pulled her over and pecked her lips.  “You are……you like me so you’re also a pig.”

She shouted.  “No, no, I’m not!  I don’t like you!”

“Alright, I am…….”  Long San hugged her tightly.  “I like you, so I am…….”  His voice was soft and husky and she almost drowned in it.

This time, Fengning could not continue anymore.  “I…….I……..”  She could not say a complete sentence for a long time.

AD

Long San understood.  He stroked her back and comforted her.

“I was in the wrong and I don’t blame you…….I was wrong too and I don’t blame you, honest.”

His words stirred up Fengning’s emotions, her eyes became hot and she buried her head in his arms.  Long San said softly into her ear.

“I was also wrong.  I shouldn’t have left you in the cold for three years and shouldn’t have left you behind as I traveled throughout the year.  It was me who made you suffer alone and it was not only you who were wrong but I was also wrong.  If I had treated you nicely like now, you surely wouldn’t have done something like that.  You were sad while staying in the Long Mansion and it allowed others to take advantage.  It was I who didn’t protect you and made you suffer grievances and bullying from others.  It was all my fault……”

Fengning burst into tears.

How can he think like this?  How can he be so tolerant of her?

She had nowhere to hide from her shame and felt a heart-piercing pain.

“I feel very regretful.  Although I can’t remember what happened, I regret it and hope I can start all over again.  I must let all of you see my good points.  Although I had forced this marriage between us, I shouldn’t have harbored any bad intentions…….”

As she cried, she choked and Long San quickly patted her back.

“It was my fault, we were prejudiced against you.  What you said is correct.  If you treat others with sincerity, you will be rewarded in return.  We didn’t treat you sincerely with our hearts in the past, therefore we didn’t receive your affection.”

Long San continued.  “Feng’er, we have missed out on the three years and now finally, we are clear about each other’s feelings, so we mustn’t miss out on it again, alright?”

Fengning was trembling.  She dared not……Bao’er’s birth had too great an impact on her.

If it is only bad memories, they can disappear, fade away, and be erased but it is not the case with Bao’er.  She is a living person, she will grow up, she will eventually understand and ask about her father’s whereabouts.  She will take to heart the views of the people around her and her past may even affect her marriage and ruin her life.

(In ancient times, it was a social taboo for a woman/divorcee/widow to remarry and would encounter even more problems if there are children from her previous marriage.  The man’s family would look down on her, make her life difficult and the children would suffer together with her.  People would gossip and pass unkind remarks about her and her children and the children would be stigmatized and socially excluded.  Therefore, most women would rather live the rest of their lives on their own or with their children if she has any.)

Fengning cried while shaking her head.  It would be better for her to take Bao’er far away from the Long and Feng families and it is only right to look for a place where no one knows her and settle down.

“Feng’er……”  Long San looked at her as she shook her head and started to feel anxious.

“I still can’t be with you.”

“Why not?  I’m willing to protect you, so who can stop me?”

“Your family won’t allow me to enter the family again.”

Fengning chose the safest reason.

“Naturally, my decision counts, otherwise, my Second Brother wouldn’t have allowed me to come out to search for you.”

“But my family won’t let me go.”  Fengning wiped the tears from her face.  “I remember my mother told me something like the Feng Family had not taken revenge on the Long Family yet.  So, there should be great enmity between the Long Family and Feng Family and that was the reason why she made me marry into your family.  After much difficulty, you have finally gotten rid of me, but if you take me back into the family again, my Mother will surely ask me to do something detrimental to your family again.  Then it will still be the same and we will have to face a difficult predicament …….”

“Feng’er, if she instructs you to do something harmful to me, will you do it?”

“Of course, I won’t.  I……..”  She replied anxiously and then stopped after thinking about it.

""

Long San hugged her shoulders and said.  “We can work hard together to understand your family’s grievance and resolve it.”

“What if we can’t resolve it?”

“Then we’ll treat it as a fart and ignore it after letting it out.” After thinking about it, he added.  “Just treat it as though we are hiding in the melon field together and letting the fart out.”

He made use of her embarrassment when she was a child to coax her and but she still had a question.  “But what if someone comes forward to claim his daughter?”

“That will be good!”  Long San gritted his teeth.  “This Uncle will chop him up!”

She looked blankly at him as he caressed her face.

“Even if he doesn’t show up, I will still look for him.  I can’t let you worry and be on tenterhooks for the rest of your life.  If he bullies you, I will make him wish for death than to stay alive.”

Fengning was so moved that her tears were about to flow again, so she hurriedly sniffed and asked.  “What if I regain my memory and remember that I had once really liked another…….”

“Will I be any worse than him?”  Long San interrupted Fengning’s presumption unceremoniously.  “Since you like me now, naturally, you won’t like others anymore.  Even if you regain your memory, I will make you like me again.  If that person is already chopped up by me, you will naturally give up.”

Fengning stared at him.  Long San lowered his head to kiss her lips gently and used his tenderness to entice her.

“Bao’er is our daughter.  I will protect you and protect her as well.  We’ll find out the truth and lead a good life together, alright?”

She opened her mouth and was about to reply ‘alright’ but suddenly she swallowed back the word.  She thought and struggled internally then said.

AD

“I…….I want to ask for Bao’er’s opinion.  I mean, in case Bao’er……  Er, anyway, I still want to think over it.”

“Alright, it’s up to you.”  Long San hugged her tightly and lowered his head to kiss her.  “You can think whatever you want.”

He arrogantly opened her lips, prodded into her mouth, and kissed her deeply.

All this while, Long San had given others an impression that he is gentle, passionate, and indifferent.  However, from this moment onwards, Fengning finally knew that Long San is actually a well-behaved wolf!   A great lecherous wolf!   Those gentleness, those kindness, and harmony were all illusions……illusions!

She had clearly said that she wanted to discuss with Bao’er but Long San knew that the one who makes the first move would get more advantages.  Therefore, before she could talk to Bao’er, he had abducted Bao’er and went shopping with her.

By the time they came back, they had a pinwheel, a dough sculpture* and an eight-treasure box*.  Bao’er was wearing a small silver bracelet on her wrist and hugging a bunch of flowers as she sat happily on Long San’s arm.

(Dough sculptures are colorful figurines of deities, animals, or legendary figures shaped out of dough on a stick.)

(Eight treasure boxes are wooden boxes divided into eight sections that are usually used as jewelry boxes.)

With just a glance, Fengning knew there would be a problem.

Sure enough, when she was accompanying Bao’er to play with her new toys, Bao’er said.  “Mother, can Uncle be Bao’er’s father?”

As soon as she heard, Fengning had a headache.  “Why did you suddenly think of this?”

Bao’er twisted her little hands and said in a small voice.

AD

“Uncle said he wants a baby to be his daughter and he will be a good father.  Didn’t Mother say that Bao’er’s father is no longer around…….so Bao’er is thinking that Bao’er also has no father and Uncle has no daughter…….”

Fengning pretended not to understand.  She did not speak and only scolded Long San in her heart.  He was really cunning.  He wanted to be a father and manipulated Bao’er’s thinking so that she wanted to be his daughter.

Bao’er bit her lip and looked hopefully at Fengning.

“Mother, adults always talk about Buddha and said that if a baby is good, Buddha will give the baby good things.  Didn’t Mother praise Bao’er for being good?  Then did Buddha send Uncle here to be Bao’er’s father?”

Now even Buddha has been brought out, so will Mother agree?

Fengning did not know how to answer and after thinking about it, she said.

“Bao’er, let Mother think this over.  Mother will ask for Buddha’s meaning and if it is not what Buddha means, Bao’er can’t force Uncle to be her father, alright?”

“Then where can Mother go and ask Buddha?”

“Buddha is God and can’t be found.  We have to wait for Buddha to look for Mother.”

“What if Buddha is too late?  Will Uncle look for another baby to be his daughter?”  Bao’er seemed a little anxious.  “Bao’er will be more obedient than other babies…….Mother, can you help Bao’er beg Buddha?”

Fengning gritted her teeth and was fuming with anger.  What she wanted to do is not to beg Buddha but to give that bastard Long San a beating!

Bao’er did not know that she was misled by her mother.  She had obviously asked her mother whether Long San could be her father but in the end, she was led to Buddha.  She pulled Fengning along to look for Long San and said solemnly.

AD

“Uncle, you don’t have to search for a baby in a hurry……wait for Bao’er.”

“Why must I wait for Bao’er?”  Long San squatted and asked in a soft voice.  He was cooking in the kitchen and today while they were shopping, he had promised to personally cook a meal for Bao’er.

Bao’er looked at Fengning with embarrassment and then lowered her head to reply in a soft voice.  “Bao’er also wants to be Uncle’s daughter…….”

Taking advantage when Bao’er was not looking, Long San lifted his head and gave Fengning a triumphant smile.  At the same time, Fengning glared fiercely back at him.

Bao’er continued to say.  “But Mother has to wait for Buddha to come and ask if it’s alright……..so Uncle has to wait a little longer for Bao’er, alright?”

The look of pride froze on Long San’s face and the next moment, Fengning smiled.

Bao’er did not receive an answer, so she lifted her head timidly and her eyes had turned red.

Long San quickly picked her up and said.  “Alright, Uncle will wait for Bao’er but why do you have to ask Buddha?”

Bao’er was dazed for a while.  She felt that she understood clearly just now when she was talking with her mother but now how come she had forgotten the reason she had to ask Buddha?

She shook her head and replied honestly.  “I don’t remember.”

He smiled gently.  “It doesn’t matter if you can’t remember.  Bao’er likes Uncle, right?”

Bao’er nodded vigorously and he rubbed her little face with his face.  “Buddha will surely agree.  Uncle will go and look for Buddha.”

AD

“But Mother said that Buddha is God and we can only wait for Buddha to come to look for us.”

“Your mother is not familiar with Buddha but Uncle is, so Bao’er don’t have to worry.”

Bao’er was so happy that her eyes grew round and big.  She turned her head around joyfully and said to Fengning.

“Mother, mother…….Uncle is familiar with Buddha…… I need not have to wait too long.”  She hugged Long San’s neck happily.

Taking the chance when Bao’er was not looking, Fengning mouthed a word at Long San ~ Liar!

And Long San also mouthed three words in reply ~ So are you!

Bao’er was unaware that they were fighting but she was very curious about Long San’s cooking.  He told her the names of every dish and it made Bao’er very happy.  Fengning who was also feeling energetic, went over to look and Long San seized the opportunity to steal a kiss from her lips.

He whispered.  “If you are mischievous again, I won’t let you eat.”

Won’t let me eat?  Does he dare?!

With arms akimbo, Fengning was about to explode when Long San hurriedly stuffed Bao’er into her arms.  Fengning quickly embraced Bao’er with both hands and when Bao’er turned her head, Long San stole another kiss from Fengning.  This time she became annoyed but before she could speak, he said to Bao’er.

“Bao’er, Uncle will cook some good food for you.  Next time, you must ask your mother to make snacks for you.”

Bao’er said.  “The food Mother cooks is not delicious.”

""

Without even feeling the slightest trace of shame, Fengning said.  “I don’t know how to make snacks.”

Long San’s heart skipped.  After looking at her seriously, he changed the subject calmly.
