Chapter 39 – Nian Yi

Long San rushed all along the way to Jiujiang County.   The famous Jianghu Golden Sword Constable, Lou Yu was waiting for him there.

“The corpse had decayed beyond recognition and even if you go and look at it, you won’t be able to find anything.  We can’t wait for you, so we had to bury him first.”

Lou Yu brought Long San to the place where the body was discovered and said to him.

“The wound on the corpse was the same as the wound described by you that was found on Lu Yan’s body and the wounds came from the same weapon.  I found out the deceased’s name is Qiu Yan and the mark on his body is the same as the mark on Lu Yan which identified them as killers from Jue Hun Lou.”

“I’m sorry, I ran into some trouble on the way here.”  Long San explained the reason for his late arrival.  He looked around carefully and noticed that the stone wall had some markings left by a sword.  The footprints on the ground were obvious and it could be seen that the killer’s internal energy was very powerful.  Bloodstains were splattered all over the ground and the fight seemed to be extremely fierce at that time.

Lou Yu asked.  “Are you having trouble from those people from Biyun Palace again?  I heard the news and was thinking that if you still don’t make an appearance, I’ll go over and assist you.”

“It’s them.  After such a long time, the entanglement is still not settled.”

“I heard you were injured the last time.  Is that woman in Biyun Palace crazy?  It looks like if you don’t obey her, she won’t give up.”  Lou Yu said with a smile.  “This luck with women that flew over is the same as a disaster.”

Long San shook his head helplessly.  “I’m really annoyed.  If I don’t have some pressing important matters to handle currently, I will surely settle and clear this matter with them.”

“According to Biyun Palace’s style of dealing with matters, it’s afraid that woman won’t give up so easily.  You have to be more careful.”

Lou Yu was a little worried for Long San.

Sometimes crazy women are even more terrifying than killers!

“Don’t worry, I have a sense of proportion.”  Long San nodded in reply and turned the subject back.  “After two consecutive deaths, Jue Hun Lou should have exploded by now, right?”

Lou Yu smiled.  “That’s right.  It’s heard that they released the news and the whole Jue Hun Lou was dispatched to punish the murderer severely.”

“So does that mean they’re already clear about the identity of the murderer?”

Therefore, isn’t it easier to follow Jue Hun Lou to search for that person since he didn’t have any clues?

“Not necessarily so.  I haven’t received any news so far but I heard that there are signs they had been in this county.  If any big missions are being carried out, for sure we’ll know.”

Lou Yu was very confident about this.

“It’s better to pay attention to the movements in the various places.  Jue Hun Lou has always been mysterious and if this matter causes an upheaval, it’s afraid there will be a reign of blood in Jianghu.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve already notified everyone and I’ll do my best for you.”

“This matter is indeed very important to me.”  Long San patted Lou Yu’s shoulder as a gesture of thanks and asked.  “Do you have any information regarding Lu Yan’s movements during the Second and Third Month?

“Not yet……”

Long San added.  “Check on Qiu Yan as well to see what he and Lu Yan were doing together during that period.”

“Alright.”  Lou Yu said.  “What do you plan to do next?”

After thinking for a while, Long San said.  “I don’t have much time to wait.  Let’s do it this way.  Help me to release news that the murderer who killed Qiu Yan had killed a hunter inside a house in the forest in the suburbs and the constables are now searching for him.”

Lou Yu raised his eyebrows.  “Invitation to enter the urn*?”

(Invitation to enter the urn is an idiom meaning to get a wrong-doer to rectify/punish himself before rectifying/punishing others.)

“Let’s see who that person is.”

Five days later, the first rays of the early morning sunlight shone on the branches and leaves of the forest trees.  The cold dew converged into water droplets at the tips of the leaves and quietly dripped on the mud ground.  The collision of swords and excited shouts interrupted the tranquillity of the forest.  In the forest, two men in grey clothes were fighting with a man in blue and all of them were not weak in martial arts.  The two grey-clothed men were fighting against one and soon they were gaining supremacy but the blue-clothed man fought with all his strength and was still able to fight them off for a while.

The three people exchanged numerous moves and the blue-clothed man was gradually losing strength.  He received two slashes, one on his upper arm and the other on his leg and it seemed he was about to lose the fight.

At this time, a white-clothed swordsman was standing outside the battle ring as he watched them.  The three people who were fighting received a shock.

When did this person arrive and when did he start to stand there?  They were completely unaware!

The two grey-clothed men exchanged looks and tacitly understood that the white-clothed man should be a martial artist but were uncertain whether the man would give them trouble.

The long sword in a grey-clothed man’s hand trembled before it shot towards the man in blue while the other grey-clothed man shouted at the swordsman in white.

“Don’t be nosy!”

The swordsman in white raised his eyebrows and smiled.

“I was only passing by accidentally and just wanted to watch some excitement but you insisted on provoking me.  If that’s the case, I want to get involved in this matter, so what can you do?”

Before he finished speaking, he had already floated over to stand in front of the grey-clothed man.  As soon as the last two words were spoken, his long sword tied to his back was unsheathed and it struck silent and fast like a flash of lightning.

The white-clothed swordsman’s long sword was as thin as paper but its force was extremely powerful and the grey-clothed man had to retreat a step back under the tremendous pressure.  He understood he had met an expert this time and the person was extremely difficult to deal with.  If the situation was two against one, they would have a chance to win but currently, it was two against two and no one was able to gain an advantage.

However, even if the situation was unfavorable, the fight must still go on and the person must still be killed.  The man in grey gritted his teeth and raised his sword to attack.  The blade of the sword flashed and its tip was aimed directly at the heart of the swordsman in white.

Without showing panic, the swordsman turned his body around then jumped and landed on the grey-clothed man’s shoulders.  With a forceful stab, the long sword pointed directly on the grey-clothed mans’ face.  The man in grey flicked his wrist, withdrew his sword, and raising his arm, he fended off the sword to strike at the swordsman’s calf diagonally.  At the same time, he leaned back to avoid an offensive strike from the swordsman.

The swordsman in white was suspended in mid-air and could not avoid the strike, so he had to withdraw his sword to block and the two swords collided with a sharp ‘clang’.  Using this force as leverage, he flipped back and landed behind the gray-clothed man.

The grey-clothed man did not stop and turned around to attack again but the swordsman in white quickly moved away to flick his sword against the other grey-clothed man’s sword.

As a result, the man in blue was rescued from the strike in the nick of time.

The grey-clothed man was still waiting to attack again but the swordsman in white moved first to strike horizontally with his sword.  The grey-clothed man retreated two steps to dodge and the swordsman seized the opportunity to pull the man in blue backward a few steps for him to take a breather.

The two men in grey stood side by side and looked at each other again.  One of them asked.  “Brother, which path do you tread?  Why are you so nosy to get involved with the affairs of Jue Hun Lou?”

“I don’t know you and neither do you know me, so naturally there are no grudges between us.  Initially, I didn’t want to tread on this pool of muddy water but your public display was a provocation.”

The swordsman in white was Long San and his pretentious tone made the two men in grey clench their teeth.

“Hmph, the result of being nosy is death!”

As soon as he finished speaking and was just about to attack again, suddenly, some people rushed out of the surrounding area and the leader was Lou Yu.

Lou Yu was leading a group of constables and they pointed their swords at the four people in the circle.

“Recently there have been a lot of murder cases and you’re committing murder here!  Therefore, it’s afraid you can’t rid yourselves of this matter.  Stop everything and follow us back!”

The grey-clothed men were dumbfounded and looked at the people in constable uniforms.

“Follow you back?  With only a few government wastrels like you?  Pei!  Follow your grandfather!”

What he hated the most are these government people who are always muddle-headed!

Lou Yu was furious.  “You dare to utter filthy words?!  Arrest them and take them all back!”

The group of constables rushed up together.  Long San struck a palm hit on a man in front of him then made his escape and pulled the man in blue along with him.  It was obvious that the man did not want to be caught either, so he quickly followed Long San.  He ran hard behind Long San and after running for a long time, they managed to shake loose the constables.

When the man found that no one was chasing behind them, he held up his cupped hands and saluted to Long San.

“Thank you for this hero’s help.”

“Don’t be courteous.  I was just passing by and it was only a small effort.”

Long San smiled slightly and held up his hands to return the salute.  He looked at the man’s wounds and said.  “Your wounds are not light.  It’s better to consult a doctor as soon as possible.”

The man shook his head and sat down against the roots of a tree.  From the folds of his clothes, he took out a small bag and fished out a pill to eat, then sprinkled some medicinal powder on his wounds.  After that, he took out two pieces of cloth and hastily wrapped the wounds with them.  After everything was completed, he finally sighed in relief.

“Since I’ve been targeted by the constables, it’s better not to enter the city again.”

Long San nodded and asked.  “Jue Hun Lou is an assassin organization, how did you provoke them?”

“I didn’t provoke them, they were the ones who provoked me.”  The man’s young face showed grief and anger.

“What do you mean?”  Long San showed a look of curiosity but was secretly on guard.  He recognized this person because when Lu Yan died, someone was inquiring about a girl with a big appetite who likes to smile.  At that time, he was worried there would be danger therefore, he got someone to lead that person to another place far away.  However, he had secretly taken a look at him and remembered that this man in blue is the same person.  The girl he inquired about was very similar to Fengning.

The man looked at Long San and replied.  “Those people in Jue Hun Lou hurt my beloved.  Now it’s unclear whether she is dead or alive and her whereabouts are unknown.”

Long San’s face sank.  Although he showed a sympathetic expression to the man, his heart was beating chaotically.

“No wonder you wanted to kill them.  Presumably, it’s to seek revenge for the person you like.”

“I have already taken revenge.”  The man replied.  “So the people from Jue Hun Lou are now pursuing me and trying to kill me.”

“What do you plan to do in the future?”

“I want to continue searching for her.  Although she is hot-tempered and careless, she always has some luck, so perhaps, she may still be alive.”

As the man spoke, his voice started to choke up a little.

Long San felt as though his heart was blocked by a big rock and could not say a word.  The man in blue muttered to himself again.

“But if she is still alive, she should have seen the secret code I left and contacted me.  It has been such a long time, she hasn’t returned and there is no news either.  If she is still alive, she won’t be like this.”

He was depressed and with his head lowered, he sank deep into thoughts.  After a long time had passed, he looked up at Long San and feeling a little embarrassed, he said.  “Sorry, I shouldn’t have told you this.”

Long San shook his head.  “Not to worry.  It’s just that this kind of thing is so heartbreaking.”  After thinking for a while, he said.  “Now that Jue Hun Lou is looking for you, it’s better to be cautious.  I walk in Jianghu and have a lot of friends, I can help you.”

“That’s not necessary.”  The man said.  “I’m not from Xia Country.  I won’t stay here for long and will be going back soon.  I’m not afraid of Jue Hun Lou and this time I encountered them because I fell into their trap.”

“Going back?  Going back to where?  Just now didn’t you say you wanted to continue searching for her?”

The man smiled bitterly.  “Actually, I already know the result in my heart.  It’s only that I can’t accept it and still harbor hope.”

The emotion in his voice made Long San’s heart tremble.  He had experienced this before.  It was obviously a feeling of desperation but he wanted to lie to himself and found thousands of reasons to give himself hope.

“That time, when she left she said she wanted to settle some family matters.  I was a little worried, so without my Master’s knowledge, I stole out sneakily to look for her.  Unexpectedly, I heard the news from Jue Hun Lou that she was attacked and killed.”

The man continued.  “I had avenged her but unfortunately, it was too late to tell her what I wanted to say and I really regret it.”

AD

Long San clenched his fists and said.  “She will definitely understand what you want to tell her.”

The man nodded.  “Mm……she will definitely understand my feelings for her.  Originally, I wanted to tell her after her return but I never thought that I would miss the chance with just this mistake.  However, she will understand.  From young, we have the best relationship, so she will surely understand.”

Long San froze on the spot and was speechless.  An incredible possibility struck him and made him feel scared but he did not dare to confirm it.  In the past, he had hoped for such a possibility to exist and if it was a fact, then there would no longer be any obstacle between him and Fengning.

But now if this possibility really does exist, then he will lose her…….

Long San did not want to carry on as he was afraid to know the facts but his rationality made him ask.  “What were the family matters she wanted to settle?  Maybe I can help you investigate it.”

The man shook his head.  “I don’t know since she insisted on coming to Xia Country alone.  I shouldn’t have listened to her and should have come together with her.”

He lowered his head sadly for a while then adjusted his emotions and patted the mud from his body.  He said to Long San.  “We met by chance and is considered as fated.  Thanks to Brother for your help but actually, no one can help me with this matter.  Master had reminded us not to get involved in the matters of Jianghu but I had violated his instructions when I became enemies with Jue Hun Lou.  I am not in a good mood today and I’ve told you so much, so I hope you won’t take it to heart.  I am going to leave now and in the future, we won’t have the chance to meet each other again.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and please accept this bow for saving me.”

After he finished speaking, he performed a deep bow to Long San and then raised his head to say.  “Goodbye…….”  After that he turned around and left.

Long San shouted anxiously.  “Ai……I haven’t asked for Brother’s name yet!”

The man turned his head around and replied  “My name is Nian Yi*.”

(Nian means thoughts, ideas, or read and Yi means the number 1.)

“Then the girl you are looking for is…….”

AD

Nian Yi said.  “Xiao Wu……..her name is Xiao Wu*.  All six of us brothers and sister are orphans.  Master was lazy so we were named according to the numbers from one to six.”

(Xiao Wu means Little Five.)

Then he added.  “Brother doesn’t need to worry about it.  In fact, I am already aware of the result.  Once Jue Hun Lou makes a move, they will never stop until they accomplish their goal.  Since they have confirmed it, it should be as they said.  The blame should be on me for being late, it’s all my fault………”

He murmured then turned around and left.

After walking two steps forward, suddenly Nian Yi turned back to ask.  “How shall I address Brother?”

“Long Fei.”

Nian Yi held up his fisted hands and said.  “Thank you, Brother Long.”

He turned around and this time, he really left.

Long San stood there blankly as he stared at his lonely figure in a daze.  He knew that if he rushed up to him and told him everything to countercheck the facts, there is a possibility that many truths may emerge.  But he dared not do so and could only watch as Nian Yi disappear slowly before his eyes.
