Chapter 49 – New Year’s Eve (3)

After Bao’er was comforted by Long San, she finally said the rest of the words.  “Bao’er wants to have a ‘hat’ money as New Year’s money.”

“Hat money?”  Long Er frowned.  “What is ‘hat’ money?  How much money is a ‘hat’ money?”

While the adults watched the lively show, Bao’er frowned and thought seriously before she replied.  “Or, it can be a ‘little mountain’ money.”

Long Er was dumbfounded.  ‘And how much money is a ‘little mountain’ money?”

Bao’er looked at Long San for help so he had to speak on behalf of his daughter.

“Bao’er is talking about ingots and she only remembers the shape.”

Bao’er nodded quickly and finally remembered the word ‘ingot’.  However, she still had to ask again.  “Father, is it better to have a ‘little mountain’ money or an ingot?”

Why is a child as young as her so concerned about money?

Long Er called out loudly in a rough manner.  “Bao’er, come here!”

Bao’er shrank into Long San’s arms and he stroked her little head.  “Bao’er, don’t be afraid.  Second Uncle called, so you should go over to him.”

Bao’er obediently went over and Long Er asked.  “What’s your name?”

Bao’er obediently replied.  “Long Bao’er.”

Long Er nodded.  “Since your surname is Long, then you’re a member of my Long Family and you have called me Second Uncle, so I won’t treat you badly.”

He took a small red cloth bag from the servant and gave it to Bao’er.  “This is a gift from Second Uncle.”

Long San had already told Long Er in advance that Fengning and her child should not be put in an embarrassing situation and should be given a big gift for the New Year.  Although Long Er had said some harsh words, he still complied.

Bao’er took over the small red cloth bag and opened it carefully to find a small box inside.  Bao’er took out the small box then loosened her hold on the red cloth bag and it fell to the floor.  Then she opened the small box and saw a dazzling sapphire resting inside.  Bao’er took out the gemstone in her hand and the box fell to the floor.  She wrinkled her face and felt very disappointed.

The maid who was at the side hurried over to pick up the red cloth bag and the box.

Long Er stared nervously at Bao’er for fear that she would also throw away the gemstone as it was a priceless treasure.  If it was not to give face to his Third Brother, he would not have given it away as he could not bear to part with such a valuable treasure.

However, Bao’er did not throw away the gemstone and instead, she raised her little face to look up at Long Er and said pitifully.  “Second Uncle, can you give me an ingot?”

Long Er’s face turned green.

Isn’t this gemstone worth more than a lousy ingot?

At the side, Long Da could not help but be amused while Long Qingsheng looked at the gemstone left and right and then said to Bao’er.  “I can see that this plaything is good……better than an ingot.”

In his heart, Long Er was censuring the two little rascals a hundred times over.

They are too ignorant of the gem’s value and even called it a plaything?!

“Elder Brother……”  Bao’er felt very sad and did not know how to explain to him the ingot’s importance to her.

When Long Qingsheng saw the tender baby feeling so sad, he said to Long Er.  “Second Uncle, bring out an ingot.”

Long Er pursed his lips pretending he did not hear and was determined that he would not do such an embarrassing thing.  After gifting her with a gemstone, she looked down on it and instead, pestered him for an ingot.

If this matter is known to outsiders, where is he, this Second Master Long, going to put his face?

Fengning could not bear to continue watching and beckoned Bao’er to come back to her.  With her small face full of sadness, Bao’er threw herself into Fengning’s arms.

“Mother, Bao’er is useless……Bao’er couldn’t get an ingot.”

Long Da silently took out an ingot from the folds of his clothes and handed it to An Ruochen.  An Ruochen said softly to Bao’er.  “Bao’er, Eldest Auntie will give you this ingot.”

Bao’er shook her head and said firmly in a small voice.  “Bao’er only wants Second Uncle’s ingot.”

Long Da and Long Er’s eyes twitched simultaneously.  One was being rejected while the other was disdained and it gave both of them an uncomfortable feeling.

An Rouchen burst into laughter and beckoned to the servant to bring her gift over.  It was also a brocade box wrapped in a red cloth bag.  She unwrapped it then took out a piece of transparent green jade Guanyin* pendant and asked Bao’er.  “Does this look nice?”

(Guanyin is the Goddess of Mercy.)

Bao’er nodded.  An Ruochen smiled gently then hung the pendant around Bao’er’s neck with a string and tied the knot for her.

“Eldest Auntie took this pendant to the temple and had it blessed.  Wearing this, Bao’er will be safe and healthy in the future.”

Bao’er touched the jade pendant like it was a precious treasure and said in her baby voice.  “Thank you, Eldest Auntie.”

An Ruochen smiled and kissed Bao’er while Long Qingsheng commented.  “Mm……this looks very pretty.”

Long Er was so angry that his face almost became distorted and felt very regretful.  Why was he so crazy to give away such a priceless treasure and in the end, he could not curry favor, was disdained and did not even receive any thanks!

When Fengning looked at his expression, she felt very pleased.

Ingots are not important, truly too unimportant.  The most important thing is to see the hurt expression on Long Er’s face and that is something that can’t be bought!

The more she thought, the happier she became and unable to control herself, Fengning started to laugh aloud.  Long San knew her mischievous trait had reared its head again so he gave her hand a tight squeeze to hint that she should restrain herself.

But Fengning really could not control herself as she was feeling very happy because Second Master Long’s expression made others feel very joyful.  Long Er’s face darkened and he let out a few coughs as a warning but no one paid him any attention and both An Ruochen and Bao’er started to laugh.

It’s great to celebrate the New Year and it’s great to have a family!

Fengning was satisfied.

For a while, she had forgotten that there were still many troubles left unresolved……forgotten about her parents who harbored a deep hatred for the Long Family……forgotten about the man who lied to her and told her that she was not Madam Long San and wanted to kill her……forgotten about Bao’er’s biological father……forgotten all the unhappiness…….

She only remembers that she is the happy and fortunate Madam Long San who has a husband who loves her and a daughter who is well-behaved and obedient.

So far, this is the only New Year’s Eve dinner that Fengning had an impression and it is also the happiest one.

However, when night came and dinner was over, she began to feel troubled.

Why had his house become hers?

“You’re my wife.  If you don’t stay in my house, where will you stay?”

“I want to stay in the house where I stayed before.”

Before they returned to Long Mansion, Bao’er was her shield, and although Long San would occasionally steal a little kiss or a touch, he was still considered well-behaved.  This time, when they returned to the Long Mansion, Bao’er was instantly carried away by the maid and nanny.

So, will Long San do this and do that to her again?

Fengning felt so ashamed that she dared not sleep in the same room with him.

Long San cleared his throat and wanted to laugh when he noticed Fengning’s expression but he still held back and said softly.  “You have re-entered my family and now you’re officially my wife.  Just now, you have accepted the gift of the Long Family’s daughter-in-law and you have also personally acknowledged your status.  For us to have today’s result, I had to do a lot of explaining to my Eldest Brother and Second Brother.  If you refuse to stay in the same house with me, how will I be able to stand steadily in the family in the future?  Wouldn’t my brothers and sister-in-law see me as a joke?”

Fengning could not utter a word and felt she was in the wrong.  It was inappropriate to bring Bao’er out as a shield.  After playing, Bao’er felt tired and had fallen asleep, so the maid carried her to the side house to sleep.  Fengning had no choice but to suppress her pounding heart and lowered her head.

Long San took her hand and led her into the house.  “We’re husband and wife, so we should stay together and you need to get used to it.”

""

She whispered.  “That…….that…….”

Long San did not give her a chance to hesitate anymore.  He lowered his head and sealed her lips to stop her stammering.  The air in the room quickly heated up and Fengning’s coat was stripped off and Long San did the same.  Their lips and tongue became entangled and she was about to lose her mind.  She only felt light and soft, surrounded by Long San’s breath, and was about to be pulled into a world that was full of sweetness.

The two people rolled onto the bed.  Long San was a little anxious and tore open her mid-garment to grasp the softness of her chest with his broad palm.  Fengning moaned softly and coordinated with him by raising her neck to let him kiss.  Long San pulled off the clothes on her shoulders and sucked, leaving a red mark on her skin.

When both of them were gradually entering the pleasure stage and were about to progress further when they suddenly heard a child crying.  Fengning and Long San were shocked simultaneously and then they reacted…….one felt helpless while the other panicked.

With a face full of frustration, Long San was about to speak when he was pushed away by the nervous Fengning.  The child’s cries became more and more obvious and Bao’er’s voice floated in.  “Mother, Mother…….”

A maid’s faint voice could be heard trying to coax the child but Bao’er was crying so badly that her voice could not be suppressed.

Feeling guilty, Fengning pulled the quilt up to cover her naked body and then kicked Long San.  He muttered a sound ‘Uh?’ but did not move and Fengning kicked him again and said.  “Bao’er is crying.  Go take a look.”

Long San helplessly got up from the bed and putting on a coat, he went to open the door.  Outside the door, the maid was carrying Bao’er in her arms and the moment Bao’er saw him, she held up her hands towards him asking to be carried.  With a face full of tears, she cried.  “Mother…….Mother…….”

The maid was in a state of panic.  “Third Master, Young Miss Bao woke up and cried when she couldn’t see Madam.  This slave tried to coax her but her cries became worse and worse…….”

“Alright, alright.”  Long San interrupted her and took Bao’er from her.  Baoer who was crying grievously, cried even louder as she clung tightly to his neck.  “Mother……Mother……..”

After telling the maid to withdraw, he carried the little child, who was sobbing breathlessly, into the room and said.  “Mother is here, you didn’t lose Mother.  Bao’er has Mother and Father……..don’t cry anymore……..”

He placed Bao’er in Fengning’s arms and the next moment, Bao’er held Fengning tightly and refused to let go while she kept on crying.  “Mother……..”

Fengning’s heart ached as she wiped the tears on Bao’er’s little face and kissed her.

“Bao’er is a good girl, Bao’er mustn’t cry.  Mother is here, mother will accompany you to sleep.”

Bao’er nodded furiously.  With teardrops still hanging on her eyelashes, she soon fell asleep while hugging Fengning’s arm.

Feeling frustrated, Long San reached out his hand to pinch Bao’er’s small face and Fengning fiercely slapped his hand away.  He pulled Fengning over then took a bite on her lips and said.  “I will accompany Bao’er to sleep too.”

The family of three squeezed into the bed to sleep.  Fengning hugged Bao’er while her hand was held by Long San as they slept soundly on this night.  It was not known at what time Fengning was disturbed and woke up sleepily.  When she became fully aware, she found that Long San had awakened her.

Both of them were not wearing clothes and Long San was kissing her and rubbing against her body.  Fengning felt hot and soft but she still thought of Bao’er and reluctantly pushed him away.  “No, Bao’er is still here……”

However, before she could finish speaking, she found that Bao’er had vanished!

Long San let out a deep laugh.  Fengning refused to give up and asked again.  “What happened to Bao’er?  Where’s Bao’er?  Is she alright?”

Hugging her, he gently coaxed her and replied.  “Don’t worry, Boa’er is fine but your husband is not fine.”  As he spoke, he straightened his waist to join his body with hers causing her to let out a soft ‘Ah’ and her cry was sealed by his kiss.  Fengning held onto his shoulders tightly with her legs resting on his shoulders and was soon dragged into the vortex of ecstasy by him.

While in this heated entanglement, when Fengning recalled these days, she felt she could not be any happier but what she did not know was that the peace and stability turned out to be just an illusion.  When one is surrounded by happiness, one tends to easily forget the evil.

She had forgotten that the problems with her parents were still unresolved……forgotten about that man who lied to her and told her that she was not Madam Long and wanted to kill her……forgotten the mystery of that square-faced man who told her that she was too nosy……forgotten about the problem of Bao’er’s biological father……forgotten about all the unhappiness………

However, what is supposed to happen is bound to happen…….

In the blink of an eye, three months passed.

During this period, Fengning sent a letter to the Feng Family to inform them about her current situation.  She told her parents that she had followed Long San home, re-entered the Long Family, and became his wife.  From now on, she will live her life with Long San, take good care of Bao’er, assist her husband, and educate her child.  She also said that she is living very well and they need not worry about her and to take good care of themselves.

When her parents did not cause any trouble for her, she felt relieved.  She discussed with Long San and sent some local delicacies as gifts back to her maiden home then threw the matter to the back of her mind.

Soon it was the 26th day of the Third Month and two days later would be Bao’er’s third birthday.

Fengning was busy making preparations to celebrate her precious daughter’s birthday but Bao’er still remembered she had not received an ingot from her Second Uncle.

“Father, you said that I can ask for gifts for my birthday, then is it the same as the New Year?  Can I ask Second Uncle for an ingot?”

Long San kissed Bao’er and felt amused when he recalled seeing Long Er making a detour every time he sees Bao’er during the past few months.  It was all because Bao’er’s grievous eyes would look at him like a tiger watching its prey.  Her look was so scary that Long Er, who is well-known for being arrogant, could not stand it either.

Long San said gently to Bao’er.  “You can request a gift for your birthday.  Father will get it for you, alright?”

Bao’er bit her lip and said in a small voice.  “Elder brother also said he will help Bao’er get it but Bao’er doesn’t want.  Bao’er promised Mother, so Bao’er wants to get it herself.”

Long San hugged her speechlessly while his heart ached for her.  The child was shy and stubborn and unfortunately, Long Er, who puts a lot of importance on having face, persistently refused to give her an ingot citing that he could not afford to lose face.  Long San decided that he must think of a way to make Long Er give in so his daughter will be happy.

Naturally, Fengning also understood her daughter’s thoughts.  Sometimes, this child is easy to coax but at certain times, she insists on having her way.  Fengning did not expect that Long Er would be so generous to give the child a gemstone.  However, the idea of getting an ingot from Long Er was imprinted in Bao’er’s heart but Long Er was adamant not to give it to her.

Therefore, Fengning thought for a long time and finally, she took action.
