Chapter 16.2:

“Why are you distracted?”

As I blamed myself for being fooled by his scheme, Serpence waved his hand in front of me to wake me up.

“Be alert so you don’t get lost.”

 “I’m not a kid…”

“If you get lost, don’t wander anywhere and go straight to the guard.”

“Thank you for worrying about me.”

I imagined myself losing Serpence and looking for the location of the guard. Serpence, who arrived first, said he didn’t know that an adult would get lost, and he would pretend to blame himself for not paying attention. The guards whom sees him like that think of me as a pathetic person who harms the duke, and they will stare at me condemningly.

 ‘Let’s get it together.’

After that, I calmed myself down and followed Serpence.

He was wearing a gray robe, but I couldn’t miss him because of his stature and graceful movements that couldn’t be hidden.

‘Is there any meaning to this?’

After examining the meaning of the hidden secret appearance of Serpence with a lot of nobility showing in his walk, I decided to just focus on him not being found out as the lord of this territory. The difference between the noble master of the neighboring town who hides his identity and goes out to play and the lord who secretly comes to inspect is huge.

“Zion, doesn’t that look delicious? How about that one?”

As I quietly followed him, my mouth slowly grew bored. Now that this has happened, I’ll have to feed him this and that so that he can hear the meatballs talking. In my mind, I wanted to buy it myself, but I had no choice because it wasn’t payday yet. After all, it’s an extension of work, hah… well, I decided to lean on Serpence’s wallet.

He was already looking at the stands to check the price, asking about prices, or buying small items little by little.

“Isn’t it a waste to buy and carry stuff you won’t use? It’s cumbersome to move around. I think it’s better to buy food and eat it…”

Serpence agreed as if he felt there was some truth to those words. I reluctantly recommended snacks that he could eat, not what I wanted to eat.

We visited bookstores, felt like children going around and walked down the street eating cotton candy. It was a bit funny to see two grown men walking around with cotton candy, but it’s not like the people will see us again anyway.

After looking around and eating delicious food, I felt like I’m finally taking a break for the first time since being possessed in [Master of the Holy Sword]. I remember going out to play with my friends in Korea… Why is there no PC room in this world? There is nothing like a PC room as a final destination when playing with friends.

“How did you get around before?”

We bought a Western-style hot dog and sat at the fountain in the square to eat it, and then I asked what came to my mind. At first, Serpence took the lead, but after, I almost walked him around.

“It’s nothing special. Looking around the stalls or looking at the faces of people passing by.”

Serpence said that in a no-nonsense tone, then he took a bite of his hot dog. Not a single drop of the sauce flowed or got on his lips. It would be possible to eat a hot dog neatly like that! No one can do that. This is the moment when I discover Serpence’s hidden talent. Would he be offended if I told him, ‘Your talent is to eat hot dogs neatly!’

 “…messy.”

As I ate the hot dog and looked dirty, Serpence handed me his handkerchief. I was going to say, ‘This is the way I originally eat it!’  I quietly took his handkerchief and wiped my hands and lips.

“Still, wasn’t today more fun than before? I had fun.”

 “I’m not looking for fun.”

That’s true, but it’s a bit sad to say it like this. At the moment I started to think that I must have had fun alone…

“Obviously, it was nothing special from before, but something…. I don’t know for sure, but it seems different…”

 “···Yes?”

 “Ummm… it was fun…”

Serpence raised his eyebrows and contemplated seriously. It looks as if anyone could see him looking as if he’s facing the challenges of the century.

“The moment you think with your head, you lose, you have to feel it with your heart!”

“Then am I already a loser?”

He grinned bitterly. I didn’t mean it like that, but I can’t make Serpence understand the way of our world, ‘If you do, you lose.’

“If you lose once, you don’t lose forever, you just have to try again and win.”

At those words, Serpence gently pressed my forehead with his fingertips with a slightly worried expression. This is the second time.

If you don’t look closely, you won’t notice. A faint divine power was formed, and a warm energy flowed into me, just like it did on the first day I went to work.

‘What the hell is this? Is it a ritual?’

As I looked at Serpence’s serious face with a puzzled expression, he lifted his hand and opened his mouth in a voice that was barely audible to those around us.

“I actually suspected you might be a spy of a demon cult.”

 “Yes?!”

Startled, I jumped up from my seat, and Serpence told me to be quiet and sat me down again. Why did such doubts arise?

“I thought that you were trying to win my favor, find a weakness, grab it and shake me, or just affect me.”

 “Absolutely not!”

There was nothing to be said in the part of holding a weakness and shaking him. But what happened after that has nothing to do with it.

Rather, it is my goal to prevent him from falling into the demon-worship camp and corrupting himself.

“I didn’t feel the energy of black magic from the first day I checked, but I can’t rule out the possibility that you were a thoroughly prepared person after contact.”

I thought it was just to infuse divine power. The act must have been a full-body scan. This guy is very wary of anyone who approaches him.

“I was planning to cut off contact with the outside and drive you in moderately, digging out your background and using it as a counterattack.”

The train was chosen as the stage not for escape, but to prevent the outside from seeing that I was being interrogated. He said slowly, examining my expression with his insightful eyes.

‘If it’s half-half, is he talking about a double agent?’

If we were to predict based on the behavior of Serpence in [Master of the Holy Sword]…

By properly mixing truth and lies to convey information, it creates confusion. By leaking truthful information that doesn’t take much damage, I build my position in the Demon Worship faction and raise it so that I can access the main base. Well, I guess he was thinking of using me that way.

“But for that, you’re too sloppy… Rather than wishing for my corruption…”

In a suspicious and questioning voice, Serpence spoke intermittently. He had a very confused expression.

“It’s a little, no, actually, it’s a lot of embarrassment. Are you saying that in the end, you’re going to believe me?”

“To be honest, I don’t believe you. I will continue to doubt you.”

 “…aren’t you talking too straightforwardly?”

Serpence smiled at my dissatisfied expression.

Not the perfect smile as usual, but a slightly awkward smile. It must have been an awkward expression on his face, but it seemed more natural than any smile he had ever worn.

“Well, I can’t help it. Would you like to watch me yourself?”

 “…Yes, I’ll watch.”
