Chapter 20

Part 1: Imperial Palace Banquet with the Duke (1)

The next morning. As I got on the carriage going to the Imperial Palace, I realized that I had returned to my daily life.

  “Did you eat well?”

  “············”.

Serpence nodded his head silently while showing a strange expression. As I was staring at him to analyze the meaning of the expression, Serpence suddenly took out what looked like a diary from his pocket and handed it to me. It’s big, it almost has three volumes.

‘What? Are you asking me to write a Serpence observation diary?’

After accepting it and staring blankly, Serpence beckoned me as if asking me to open it. As I was told,I looked at it’s contents…

  “Huh?! Isn’t this a novel?”

It’s kind of like the one I saw on the day when I first participated in the advisory meeting, a smart aide pretended to take notes and read them.

“How did you know I wanted this…!”

A wave of emotion flooded in at the unexpected gift. No matter how exciting the advisory meeting is, the first hour is usually boring. Just holding back my yawn was enough to make me feel tired. But now that’s a thing of the past!

“His Majesty is directly participating in today’s advisory meeting?”

  “Yes?”

Does this gift have anything to do with the emperor’s attendance at the advisory council?

Come to think of it, I knew nothing about the emperor except that he loved his son very much.

In [Master of the Holy Sword], at the beginning, he was an extra character who only appeared before Humanus left the palace after being chosen by the Holy Sword and when he briefly returned to work with the underworld and Serpence.

‘After that, he died with the fall of the empire.’

When Humanus arrived at the imperial palace late, everything was already over. He loved his family and friends, his country and it’s people, but he lost it all.

‘At that time, I think Humanus shed tears for the first and last time.’

Leading his party with a bright and cheerful appearance the same as before, but at night, he struggled with nostalgia, regret, and helplessness of the past.

Humanus realized how immature he was. He didn’t realize that his friend was going the wrong way. Had he known that, this tragedy would not have happened. He pushed himself to talk to him, but couldn’t understand who he really was.

  “On a subject like that…”

He walked firmly and felt sad at his closed heart. He was selfish in the past, he was foolish and couldn’t stand it. Humanus recalled his indecisiveness and fell into remorse.

If only he had killed Serpence, so he wouldn’t have added his power to the demon worshipers.

He couldn’t shake the thought that the Empire might have survived until his return. He was not able to cut off his resentment towards his close friend, and he lamented his own weakness that he could not cut off his life as well.

So Humanus lost everything and could only regret.

However, no matter how much he regretted the past, the past could not be turned back. All he could do was wield his sword. So, Humanus swung his sword, swung it, and swung it again.

He cuts his feelings of the past to save at least one more person. To make this happen, he cut off his friend to be a little bit stronger, and to move forward.

Perhaps Humanus wanted to hear Serpence’s true intentions until the very last moment.

If he found out why he acted like that, wouldn’t he make up for the regrets of his past?

‘Or maybe he wanted to deny the tragedy that was caused by his mistake …’.

I think there must have been some meaning in all of this. He may have wanted to believe that this was the best option, not that he had a better option.

If not either of these. Maybe because the only fragment left to Humanus, whose past relationships and memories had completely disappeared, was Serpence. Maybe he just wanted to hold on to him somehow.

‘···If you look at it that way, he’s also really bad at making friends.’
