Chapter 3.1

Duke, please repent! (2)

Serpence had all the qualifications to become the master of the Holy Sword.

Relating to that, his innate divine powers were extraordinary. That’s why, he was praised as the ‘Master of the Holy Sword’ nominee even before he developed his own character.

“It seems that leaving obtaining a solution to the fear that may come in the future is the same everywhere you go.”

According to [Master of the Holy Sword], Serpence has been suffering to meet the adults’ expectations from the time he barely started speaking.

He acquired all kinds of knowledge and repeatedly trained in swordsmanship.

The only time he could rest is when he used four hours a day for sleeping.

‘If it weren’t for his overflowing divine power, wouldn’t he have died of overwork before he was even ten years old?’

It was because of his enormous divine power that he was forced to face all that, and yet, it is funny to think that he was able to survive thanks to it.

From an early age, he was driven by the words, ‘You must become the master of the Holy Sword and save the world.’

When other children didn’t even know that the word sacrifice exists, Serpence engraved the word into his bones.

He was forced to take responsibility, and thus driven to the edge.

In the future he became the perpetrator, but in the past he was the victim. And, unfortunately, it’s common for victims to turn into perpetrators.

‘If only he had one person, if he had someone he could depend on. Could everything be prevented?’

But he had no one. It was painful, very painful, and hard. No matter how much he begged for help, all he got was an unanswered echo.

‘And, with that being the case, even if his parents found out later.’

I started shaking my head, letting go of these thoughts.

In any case, no one disagreed with what the former Duke of Prasidus was doing.

No matter how much Serpence suffered, it was turned into a right thing for the future’s greater cause.

And when Serpence became ten years old, the problem reached its peak.

“You are a child with a lack of will, and you need to learn patience.”

“You may need to be hurt to learn certain things. Maybe this is the day. Come with me.”

With a calm voice, his father led him.

 “What a crazy man!”

This fanatic person is really terrifying.

In any case, the damn writer left this story  when Serpence was dying. When the recollection was over, his life had already ended. After all, Serpence is mentioned in parts of the novel. In both worlds, he didn’t get that one understanding person until the end.

 ‘Who knew?’

I never thought he was a complete villain.

It really turned out that he was nothing more than an abandoned and wounded child. He did nothing more than struggle to protect himself from the world.

I started to remember what he had gone through after confronting him in person, he only existed in print for me before.

Could it be that such terrible things were real?

To be honest, I felt nauseous.

Even though Serpence was so driven, the Holy Sword did not choose him.

The one chosen by the Holy Sword was the Crown Prince of the Holy Lumen Empire.

 ‘Humanus B. Deva Lumen’.

He is the protagonist of [Master of the Holy Sword]. The divine power of Humanus fell far behind that of Serpence.

‘No, compared to Serpence, would any other candidate present be good?’

No one expected that Humanus would be chosen as the master of the holy sword.

The precedent that the person born with the strongest divine power is chosen as the master of the Holy Sword collapsed.

When Serpence was not chosen by the Holy Sword, the attitude of those who admired him changed.

“Maybe there was some reason for the disqualification?”

“Yeah, it was rather strange that such a perfect person existed. Something was obviously wrong.”

It was heart wrenching to them that what they considered a strong shield to protect them did not do its job.

And they put the blame for that on Serpence.

Serpence looked only at life as the master of the holy sword, and lived to protect them. It must have been a great shock to Serpence, who had no choice but to kill his character and self for that one purpose.

In his childhood, Serpence received no affection from his parents. Instead, he was forced to learn morals that were difficult for a young kid to understand.

One day, as he was in the middle of studying as usual. Surprised to see a bug crawling out, he struck it with a book, and accidentally killed it.

“The hero who needs to save the world doesn’t value life.”

Young Serpence was exposed to violence to the point of bones breaking for him to understand the bugs pain.

And yet, another day, in Serpence’s eyes, he was looking at a creature that looked like a living thing more than the bug.

It was wounded and imprisoned, and Serpence was forced to kill this defenseless demon.

“In order to save the continent, you will have to kill many demons in the future. It would be good to know their weaknesses in advance.”

“But, It’s so defenseless, and afraid.”

 Young Serpence couldn’t understand.

He was in agony as he faced those eyes full of desire to live.

“It is a being that harms the continent. To sympathize with such a thing, what the hell.”

His parents questioned and rebuked his morals. Over and over again, they caught defenseless monsters, and forced him to kill them.

Sometimes it was in the form of a beast, and at other times it took on a human-like shape. He learned where to stab to kill easily, and where to cut to incapacitate.

Seeing Serpence still struggling to kill, his father, the former Duke of Prasidus, described it as a ‘necessary evil’.

And that continued until Serpence felt no emotion for the act.

Serpence learned about the ‘necessary evil’.

Since then, Serpence’s parents always made him suffer. Serpence felt like he was going to die. So, he decided to kill them.

The savior who needs to save the world must not die before disaster strikes.

 This was a ‘necessary evil’.

When Serpence was not chosen by the Holy Sword, those around him began to doubt his personality. He started remembering the faces of his parents who questioned his morals.

After killing them, their barely open breathing stopped.

‘Now that he is no longer their savior, why are they acting like that?’

Anyway, he couldn’t become the master of the holy sword. So, he doesn’t need to exert further effort to help them, does he?

So, isn’t it okay to be selfish like everyone else?

Serpence remembered the things he had prepared in advance for when the demon worshippers began to move in earnest.

He turned the tip of the sword called ‘Necessary Evil’, which he had prepared with the thought that it could be used as bait to lure them out.

He decided to use it to save himself, not the world. It’s the little selfishness he’s ever shown for the first time in his life.

Serpence felt rather small. His breathing accelerated a bit.

Since then, he has used the power of the Holy Lumen Empire. He still looked like a saint on the outside, but behind the scenes, he was unstoppable, wielding the power of the underworld.
