Chapter 4.1
The Duke’s Aide (1)
Since today is the first day of work , it was decided that I should follow the butler to learn the structure of the mansion, and get introduced to the people whom I’ll see often.
“Wasn’t it good to actually meet him?”
“Yes, I think so too.”
Hans laughed out loud, “Hahaha.” Then he showed a smile that proved how much pride he had. Now that I’ve only said hello to Serpence, I can’t judge yet whether he’s good or not.
‘Well, the face seems good, but…’
As I got farther away from the office where Serpence was, the tension in my body slowly began to dissipate.
After the concern I had about meeting the final boss of [Master of the Holy Sword] was gone, I could finally notice the surroundings that I had missed seeing before.
The corridor wasn’t extravagant, it was adorned with elegant antiques extending far.
‘If the mansion in the capital is this wide, how big would the lord’s castle be?’
Looking outside, this wasn’t the only building here. According to Hans’ description, there is a dormitory for the users, a barracks, an annex for guests, etc. The main building consists of 5 floors, and the office is on the 4th floor.
‘Because of how worried I was, I didn’t feel any difficulty while climbing the stairs till the 4th floor.’
The impact of the human mind on the body is amazing. Looking at Shion’s body, it didn’t seem like he exercised as much as the original me did. Wouldn’t I be exhausted just by going up the stairs in the morning and arriving at the office?
Thinking like that, I think I will hate going to work because of the stairs, not serpence.
Except for the 5th floor, which is the Duke’s personal space, I toured the entire main building. While being guided around, I met people like servants, administrators, and knights.
The last place we arrived at was the restaurant, it was time for dinner.
‘What is this? Do they pay for the food?’
If that’s the case, all I can say is that it’s really great.
“You must be hungry, I think it would be good to have dinner. After that, you can talk to the Duke and get off work.”
When I heard that, I remembered I was extremely hungry. This morning, I was so worried about Serpence that I went to work on an empty stomach.
“Wait. I went to work in the morning, but why is it dinner now? What about my lunch?!”
I stared at Hans with a look of resentment because of the lunch that I had missed. But he ignored me without caring about the look in my eyes, showing me the smile of a benevolent grandfather.
“After eating, it would be good for you to go to the office by yourself.”
Hans said that he hoped I could get used to the job quickly, and left, saying that he had to go to his job now.
‘Wasn’t this supposed to be the dream job everyone wants? I’ve had to skip lunch from the first day of work? Serpence isn’t the only one whom I shouldn’t be deceived by his friendly-looking face, right?’
Come to think of it, that butler had been loyal to the former Duke of Prasidus even before Serpence was born. There’s no good person here who stepped up for the child who was abused, right?
‘Huh? Are all the people in this family like this?’
I suddenly lost my appetite, so I got up from my seat before finishing the dinner. It’s fine, I’m sure I’ll be hungry when I get back home.
‘Yeah, when I get home, I have to boil cup ramen for a late night snack. Wait! They don’t have bag ramen, let alone cup ramen here, right? I can’t even order chicken!’
It felt like all the joys in life were gone.
I felt a greater sense of deprivation than when I suddenly realized that I was possessing Zion’s body after waking up from sleep.
‘I should have forced myself to eat.’
I already regret the dinner that I said goodbye to, but what can I do, I had already left.
Contrary to worrying about getting lost on the way to Serpence’s office, I remembered that it was in the innermost part of the 4th floor, so I was able to find it right away. I didn’t wander around, because the office was located far away from the restaurant. When I arrived, I was very exhausted.
Since I finished looking around this mansion, I finally went up to the 4th floor again. It was clear that I would suffer from a lot of muscle pain the next morning. Will I be able to get up?
‘Besides, I have to go back home too?!’
I’m already out of my mind.
“Ah!”
Suddenly, the office door opened, at the same time, a woman’s screams and a ‘crash-‘ were heard.
Because I was standing with my mouth agape in front of the door, when the maid opened the door and found me, she was startled and dropped the tray she was holding.
Perhaps she had brought Serpence after dinner tea, the teapot fell to the floor and broke with a loud noise.
“Ugh! Ahhh, are you okay?!”
“Yes, yes! I’m okay.”
Me and the maid looked at each other with shaky eyes.
Our gazes were intertwined for a moment, then she said, ‘Oops!’ She squatted down, picking up the shards of the kettle and placing them on the tray.
“I’ll help too!”
It happened because I surprised her, so I couldn’t let her do such a dangerous thing alone. As I squatted next to the maid and tried to reach for the shards of the kettle, Serpence approached and grabbed my hand. When I glanced at him, I noticed that it wasn’t only my hand, but the maid’s hand as well.
“It’s dangerous with bare hands. It’d be better to bring cleaning tools.”
He spoke in a slightly worried tone, facing me and the maid.
