Chapter 5.2:

During our conversation while going to the laundry room, I learned that her name is ‘Mary Gaudium’ and that she came from the collateral of Viscount Gaudium. It’s been a year since she entered the duke’s house through the introduction of her aunt.

Now that she was recognized to some extent, she was excited to be able to serve tea to the Duke, but she made a mistake.

 “Sorry.”

I apologized again, I’m gonna buy some delicious snacks later. I promise to give her some.

I didn’t notice because serpence was in there, but when I look well at her, Mary was also a pretty face.

‘But until before, I only saw her as ‘Brown-haired maid A’.

Once again, Serpence’s beauty diverted my attention. How am I supposed to look like to others when I have to stick around a person like that?

‘Please see me as a human rather than a marine creature!’

 I inwardly started praying earnestly.

 * * *

The next day I went to work, faced the stairs, and was about to make up my mind to go up, but Hans, who I just ran into, informed me that today was the day when Serpence is going to work at the Imperial Palace. The Duke is going to come down, so there’s no need to go up to the office?

“You should’ve told me about that in advance.”

“I told you yesterday, don’t you remember?”

I brought my notebook today, so I’ll write it all down as soon as I can. As I was taking notes of what he just said, Hans looked at me with a slightly pathetic gaze. In the meantime, he also gave me information that Serpence would go to the Imperial Palace on days like Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and that he could rest on Sunday because It’s a holiday.

Even though I lacked some common sense because I’m new to this place, I knew that Sunday is off!

‘Only on Sundays though? In this world, is the default a 6-day workweek?!’

I almost missed work on Saturday. After waiting for a while, Serpence came down. With every step he took, someone bowed his head lightly in respect, and I bowed my head like a Korean to greet him.

“I was going to tell you before you left yesterday, you don’t have to be so polite.”

 “Unknowingly, reflexively. Haha.”

It’s been 25 years since I was born and raised in Korea. Actions that I’m accustomed to appear reflexively and are unavoidable, right? It’s not about the body, it’s about the mind.

“Lord Rivelon must be very uncomfortable with me.”

Serpence had a gloomy expression on his face.

‘Oh, please. Don’t make that face in front of others. Everyone looks at me like trash!’

That’s definitely on purpose! That said, ‘I’m perfectly comfortable, aren’t I?’ and it’s not like I can just put my arm around him and show that I’m friendly with him. If I do that, before Serpence kills me, the knight standing there will cut my head off saying it’s blasphemous.

Serpence smiled bitterly as I stood  staring at the people around us.

“It was a joke I made because I wanted to get to know you better, but I guess it was a mistake.” He added. The gazes around me became more fierce.

‘Is he really doing this on purpose?’

This is the normal way he converse, right? It’s not just me he’s treating like this, is it?

“No! I still can’t grasp that I’ve become an aide to the Duke I respect. I’ll be more careful in the future.”

“You’ll do a lot of work with me in the future, if you keep getting nervous like that, you won’t be able to hold up.”

Serpence said that, patted me on the shoulder and headed for the carriage. If I had been the original Zion without possession, would I have been so moved  to the point where I’d dedicate my allegiance to him and cry?

Really, Ignorance is medicine sometimes. I think I will firstly question what Serpence is up to no matter what good actions he does. I sighed inwardly, and followed Serpence into the carriage.

‘I thought we’d go outside the mansion and ride, but to move a wagon inside the mansion’s premises.’

Commuting to work at a distance that would have to be driven by a wagon every day. It was obviously impossible for me. After all, it was a good thing I asked the duke to give me a room.

As the wagon started, it seemed to shake a little at first, but then it moved steadily and smoothly as if we were in a car.

It’s probably because it’s a high-class carriage the Duke rides in, so unlike what I usually see in fantasy novels, I don’t think I need to be concerned about any pain afterwards.

‘Though, I have gone to work and yet we’re moving again to work?’

It feels like a nightmare, it’s kinda terrible, I need to wake up.

“By the way, I told Hans about what you said yesterday.”

“Do you mean room and board?”

“Yeah. He said he would clean up the room in the morning, so if you talk to him when you get back from work today, he will guide you.”

 “Thank you for your consideration.”

I’ll come a little early tomorrow, put the things I need right away in the room, and move in earnest over the weekend. As I pondered which item to bring first, I felt Serpence staring at me.

“Why are you staring at me like that?”

“It’s nothing. It seems like you’re having a hard time with me, but it’s strange that you can make such a request so easily.”

It was nothing, I said everything I had to say. Is it a question of why do I want to live in the same house since I said he’s scary, or is it literal? Can I just answer both of them?

“I went to work yesterday and it was hard.”

“Yeah, the mansion is definitely a bit spacious.”

It’s not that scary, it’s not like I’m going to sleep and die right away, my body need to be comfortable. Serpence smiled and nodded as if my words had answered his questions. And the conversation was cut off.

‘It’s very awkward because the conversation is suddenly cut off, isn’t it?’

Even more so since Serpence, sitting opposite me, is staring at me with a grin.

‘What kind of atmosphere was it when Serpence was alone with someone in [Master of the Holy Sword]?’

First of all, in the two battle scenes where he fought with the main character. The first was a one-on-one situation, when Humanus tried to persuade Serpence over and over again. However, his words never reached Serpence’s heart.

In the final battle, he fought with his comrades, but after Serpence fell, the holy sword was stabbed into his heart.

‘Even then, a proper conversation did not take place.’

Rather than that, the feeling that the main character was talking alone is strong.

‘How about the situation when Serpence led the conversation?’

Threatening, torturing, or corrupting. It seems that there’s only situations mentioned when he looked down at his opponents when they were in pain with an angelic face while laughing and mocking them.

I used to be sympathetic when he was hurting the other person’s mentality, but female readers said such moves were appealing.

‘What appealing, they were all frozen to death!’

Rather than easing the current situation, this only increased my anxiety, and the nickname among readers suspense came to my mind again.
