Chapter 6.1

The Duke’s Aide (3)

I tried to ignore the gaze of Serpence who was staring at me as if analyzing me, and pretended to look out the window.

Scenes that seemed to come out of a movie set in a medieval or modern Western setting were spread out on the street.

‘I thought it would be amazing, but it’s not?’

Perhaps it was because of the merging of Zion’s memories, I just felt the thrill of seeing the city while passing by riding a bus. Come to think of it, I didn’t even think about the scenery when I was commuting to and from work yesterday and today.

After staring for a long time without me reacting, Serpence seems to have given up. He looked away from me and opened a book that looked difficult.

Despite the silence, the carriage drove well and we arrived at the Imperial Palace. It was truly a sight to behold.

‘The name is the Holy Empire, is it okay to have such luxury?’

Since the Prasidus family’s mansion was mainly decorated with antique decorations, I thought that the Empire would value frugality and moderation. Indeed. The duke’s mansion didn’t shine, but everything looked expensive.

As I got off the carriage and looked up at the Imperial Palace, I felt even more overwhelmed by the sight before me.

 “Lord Rivelon?”

 Oops, I was acting stupidly.

I was woken up by Serpence’s call and followed behind him.

‘It wasn’t like this in the Prasidus mansion.’

Since I don’t know the artistic value, I think I was more interested in the flashy and splendid things of the imperial palace rather than the old-fashioned and elegant ones. It’s something I can tell right away that it’s expensive even if I don’t know anything.

 ‘Am I a bit snobbish?’

However, jewels that sparkle and gold are usually coveted. If I keep looking around like this, I will get distracted and become a lost child in the Imperial Palace.

As I turned my gaze, Serpence’s bluish-silver hair, walking ahead, caught my eye.  His hair, neatly tied, shimmered gracefully as he walked.

‘After all, wherever I look, everything sparkles.’

Come to think of it, what does Serpence do in the palace?

After remembering that, I decided to ask him. As long as there are a lot of people passing by, I’m not afraid of serpence’s reply!

“By the way, what kind of work does the Duke do in the palace?”

Serpence paused slightly and looked back. He looked at my face silently for a moment with a gentle smile. At first glance, he looked friendly, but in my eyes, he seemed to be saying, ‘I have a lot to say, but I won’t.’

Roughly, ‘What did you do in the wagon before that now you are asking?’, ‘What does he even know?’ I’m guessing that he might be thinking something like that.

“I do not have a specific position, and I am attending the advisory council as a standing member.”

It’s kind of an unexpected answer. I thought he was definitely occupying a high position somewhere. As if he had noticed my thoughts, Serpence resumed his steps and continued talking.

“Because I have the greatest chance to become the master of the Holy Sword. If that happens, I will have to travel all over the continent, naturally.”

It was a friendly explanation tone, but to my ears, it sounded sarcastic implying ‘Why don’t you know when it’s obvious?’

When I heard him, he was obviously right, so I exclaimed ‘Aha~!‘ to convey understanding.

“In addition, the head of the advisory council is the Duke of Argento.”

“He’s the Duke of Argento. Yeah, that’s right.”

Actually, his name didn’t come to mind, but I can’t say that I don’t know him when he’s a Duke, so I nodded my head and pretended to know. Wouldn’t I be treated like a fool or a spy if I didn’t know?

 ‘Ugh.Argento, Argento…’

Since the name was not mentioned in [Master of the Holy Sword], I barely remembered the memory of Zion, the original owner of the body. His full name is Flamentum C. Argento. He is in his early 70s and is said to be the head of the advisory council and the prime minister at the same time.

‘Since It’s a body that was studying for the position of an aide, It has at least this much common sense.’

For reference, the Duke of Argento is slightly inferior to the Duke of Prasidus, but he is one of the only two dukes of the Holy Lumen Empire.

Although he seems like an incredibly important figure, the reason he didn’t appear in the original is because the Holy Lumen Empire was ruined early. It wasn’t ruined from the beginning, but apart from that, the amount of information about the Empire itself was very small as the protagonist traveled all over the continent.

There is one intriguing aspect from before.

‘Why does their full names seem to be mentioned in the order A, B, C? Is the next one D?!’

It was probably not meant to be like that. It’s just a coincidence. I’m saying this while thinking, that spelling in between the names is actually the first letter of their baptismal name. Only those with divine power can receive such a name, and it is said that the name is given by God directly through a baptism ceremony done at the age of ten.

‘Because of that, family, lovers, trusted colleagues, etc. It’s a name you would know about someone only when you have a very close relationship with or you can trust?’

The baptismal name of the main character, Humanus, is Bright. Before leaving the palace after receiving the holy sword, there was a scene where he exchanged his name with his fiancée as they exchanged their last greetings.

‘At that time, he seemed quite affectionate.’

However, with the fall of the Holy Lumen Empire, she also died, and Humanus spread the name with his newly acquired party members and heroines.

‘Well, that’s the case with him being the leader I guess.’

By the way, since his baptismal name is about light, isn’t it just like totally announcing that he would be given the Holy Sword?

In contrast, Serpence’s baptismal name did not appear until the end. Even in the last flashback scene.

‘What’s the deal with the final boss!’

As I continued to think about this and that, we arrived at the conference hall. Well, it’s good to think about different things when walking blankly.
