Chapter 7.1

The Duke’s Aide (4)

After returning from the palace, I went to the restaurant I visited yesterday, and Serpence headed to the dining room set especially for the Prasidus family. Serpence is the only one who uses the Prasidus surname in the present duchess, so he will be eating alone.

‘There must be people serving him though, so is it that he’s eating while others are watching, rather than being alone?’

Just thinking about it makes me feel nauseous. But mentioning this, I’m also on my own.

 “Hah.”

“Why are you sighing like that?”

Suddenly, someone puts down a tray across from me and asks. When I looked up, it was Mary.

 “Is Miss Gaudium alone too?”

“You can just call me Mary comfortably.”

Mary glanced around, she looked at a group of maids standing at a distance, and then she beckoned them to come closer.

‘Okay. I was alone, but not anymore.’

Still, It’s a relief I got away from eating alone thanks to her. I am the type of person who thinks the food is more delicious when eaten with people, so I was very grateful.

“Ah, Is he the new aide who arrived recently?”

One of the maids poked Mary in the side with a cautious look, and whispered softly to her. She replied with a yes, I can hear everything though.

“Yes, I am Zion Rivelon, who has been appointed as an assistant to Duke Prasidus since yesterday.”

I wondered if I was being too vigilant, so I wore a bright smile on purpose as a signal to them to be more comfortable with me.

“Did you go to the Imperial Palace today? How was it?”

“You’re going to go with the Duke from now on, right? Good for you~!”

“The former aide seemed to be very strict!”

Questions like that were pouring out.

The cautious attitude I had seen from them before was gone. They laughed and started asking me about different things.

‘But, what did they mean by the last sentence?’

It’s not that they’ve gotten a little more comfortable, it seems that I’ve become a pushover in their eyes, but it doesn’t matter, It’s definitely better than being stiff and uncomfortable.

“The Imperial Palace was really amazing.”

At my words, they pestered me about how great it was. Also, I couldn’t just say, ‘I don’t know, it was just awesome’. Instead, I decided to spread a little bit of information.

“After passing through the ornately decorated door, a long corridor stretches out endlessly. It sparkles like waves of gold, and is lined with majestic decorations and splendid statues. It’s really amazing like that.”

There were people listening with their eyes shining, so without realizing it, I talked more and more. I even felt like people might think I’m bluffing.

“Yes, you know? Did you go into the conference room?”

 “Weren’t you bored?”

“Are all the people there high-ranking people?”

 “How was it?”

In response to the questions about the advisory council, my mouth, which had been pouring out descriptions of the imperial palace with all the expressive power I could gather, stopped.

“It was great. It was impressive. Well, I can’t tell you the conversations that came and went.”

Not knowing what to say, I slowly opened my mouth, organizing my thoughts. I didn’t notice at first, but It seems not only the maids around us, but also other people who were eating, and have been secretly listening, concentrated on the sudden control and adjustment of my words.

“Accepting the opponent’s opinion, and blocking it, even in the midst of counterattacking.”

Opinion here means ‘I’m going to hit you, will you reply?’

“It has not lost its elegance like a flying bird.”

As they jumped across the table, the papers fluttered and fell gracefully.

“Fierceness filled the meeting room, but after the meeting, they gave each other compliments and accepted all the results neatly. I couldn’t say anything, it was really impressive.”

There was no lie in this statement.

When I finished telling the story, the young maids giggled and shouted that they’re very cool, and the servants showed admiration. Other people who seemed to have experience or who looked like administrators nodded quietly with expressions as if saying, ‘It’s no different from what I imagined!’

“But what kind of person is the Duke?”

If I kept answering like this, I thought my lunch break would end when I couldn’t even touch the food I had received. So, I changed the topic and asked.

‘Of course I was mainly curious. If I know my enemy and understand myself, I might be able to dodge my death, right?’

As soon as my question was finished, the maids started praising Serpence as if they had been waiting. But, I was asking for something personal, not something ‘well known’.

Still, I have to eat and live, so I’ll focus on my food for now and meet others one by one later and ask a little bit. Listening to the information pouring out from here and there is crazy!

While emptying my bowl, ‘Oh!’, ‘Really!’  I replied with that, or nodded my head occasionally. With that alone, everyone was excited and kept talking. Even the servants at the next table tried to let me know how great Serpence was. At the back table, the administrators started arguing about Serpence’s achievements.

For information, knights and soldiers weren’t here because they use the restaurant inside the barracks building.

‘Serpence, is he an idol of the Duke’s family?’

At this moment, everyone in the restaurant was united talking about  serpence. Everyone is laughing happily.

But I couldn’t relate with them. I felt cold somehow.

How many people here know about Serpence’s childhood? If they knew, why the hell did no one help him?

Does Serpence know that they like him that much? And how about when Serpence turned his back on humanity, what did they think? Would they have turned away from reality, and resented the world, or would they have cursed him?

Countless questions were twisted and tangled in my head.

But I decided to smile brightly, pretending not to know anything.
