Upon leaving the room, Chu Rong first went to the detention room where Ning Tianwu was held and probed into her spiritual sea. As expected, he found a mental lock inside, which was particularly unique. He even discovered that within this lock, there were two distinct fluctuations intertwined together. This meant that the lock was placed by two people working together.

Chu Rong could not help but sneer.

Elder Ning was indeed ruthless. In order to establish a stable connection with An Xei, he was willing to stoop so low as to collaborate with An Xei to place a mental lock on his own biological daughter. He’s really cold-blooded!

The placement of a mental lock requires the consent of the individual. The Ning family must have extensively researched drugs capable of controlling human thoughts, and the initial test subjects were likely members of the Ning family themselves!

The person who was controlled by the mental lock was definitely more than just Ning Tianwu.

After realizing this, he went on to probe the minds of several other younger members of the Ning family. To his surprise, he found that all of their minds were also locked, and all the locks were placed by Elder Ning himself. The locks were quite new, indicating that they were recently set.

Chu Rong thought of Ning Kongran, someone who had no mental lock in his mind. A guess came out in his heart.

After the pharmaceutical scandal last time, the Ning family sent all the younger members to the Empire, leaving only Ning Kongran behind. Although it appeared that Ning Kongran chose to stay on his own, upon closer examination, it might have been orchestrated by Ning Tianxing. Ning Tianxing likely began grooming the next puppet successor, and Ning Kongran was possibly the most promising candidate.

Ning Kongran once said that he had a special spiritual power. This might be the reason he was selected by Ning Tianxing.

Over twenty years ago, the Ning family formed a connection with An Xei. Similarly, over twenty years ago, Ning Kongran was born.

About eight years later, Ning Kongran was brought back to the Capital Planet by Ning Tianxing, and almost at that time, the real Zergs appeared and the peace of the Blue Galaxy was broken. Considering Ning Kongran’s memories of the sudden mass escape of test subjects from Ning Tianxing’s laboratory, it’s possible that the appearance of the real Zergs is a result of Ning Tianxing’s research. Furthermore, aside from the medications used for profit, all of Ning Tianxing’s experiments should be related to the mastermind’s goals.

Perhaps the mastermind chose members of the Ning family as puppets precisely because of their focus on human experimentation. Furthermore, delving deeper, it’s possible that the shadow of the mastermind had lurked behind various decisions made by members of the Ning family in the past

To conduct human experimentation, one must have test subjects. In recent decades, the Federation has tightened population control, while the Empire allows for the buying and selling of slaves. This was likely why the mysterious figure brought members of the Ning family into contact with An Xei.

As Chu Rong’s speculations grew, his demeanor became heavier. Suddenly, he realized something, turned and walked out of the detention room. He looked at Fan Xiangnan, who was waiting outside, and instructed, “Investigate the coordinates where the first wave of real Zergs appeared over a decade ago. There must be Ning Tianxing’s laboratory nearby!”

Fan Xiangnan was taken aback by the sudden heaviness in Chu Rong’s aura, realizing that there might be a breakthrough in the investigation. He quickly acknowledged and turned to carry out the task.

The black flagship quickly crossed the Empire border and returned to the Federation, but instead of returning to the Capital Planet directly as planned, it went straight to a very remote little planet.

A day later, the flagship stopped above a small garbage planet that had been abandoned.

The term “garbage planet” refers to those whose planetary cores have died, rendering them unable to support life. These planets were essentially “dead”, incapable of nurturing life anymore. They can even be considered not as planets but rather as celestial bodies on the verge of disintegration, ready to break apart and become cosmic dust at any moment. They pose extremely high risks and are no longer suitable for human habitation.

“This is it, the location where the first wave of Zergs appeared years ago.” Fan Xiangnan looked at the gray planet symbol on the star map, representing “no life present,” recalling the events from back then, still unable to hide his frown.

The first wave of Zergs appeared suddenly, wandering from an unknown origin. They waved their limbs at a passing civilian ship, causing the “destruction of the civilian ship” incident that shocked both the Federation and the Empire at the time. It was the first time humans learned of the existence of such terrifying creatures as the Zergs.

Since then, a new regulation has been added to the layout of interstellar routes: it’s not permitted for routes to pass by planets without military presence in the vicinity to prevent situations where dangers arise without the possibility of timely rescue.

This planet below didn’t attract much attention during the Zerg incident back then because, at the time, it had already been a garbage planet for many years. No one could have imagined it would be related to the emergence of the Zergs.

Even if humans later saw the Zerg drilled out of the black hole, everyone thought that the Zerg had drilled out from somewhere in the universe, not from this garbage planet.

“Placing a laboratory on a garbage planet… that’s something the Ning family would do.” Chu Rong tapped on the flagship’s console, then glanced at the star map again. He noticed several Ning family pharmaceutical plant planets nearby. His expression grew colder, and he gestured for Fan Xiangnan to land.

Fan Xiangnan hesitated after receiving the order, saying, “This garbage planet may disintegrate at any time, and it would not be too dangerous to land directly.”

“This planet has remained intact for so many years, most likely it’s not truly a ‘dead’ planet.” Chu Rong replied, his gaze shifting to Qiao Zhiya behind him. After a pause, he compromised, saying, “First, have the flagship hover at a safe distance. Get a small team ready. We’ll go down together in mechas to investigate.”

Upon hearing this, Fan Xiangnan felt relieved and began to busy himself with the arrangements.

The flagship began to land. Qiao Zhiya’s ears twitched, then he sneaked out of the main control room, and ran towards the team lounge where the soldiers on stand-by were.

After a quarter of an hour, the flagship hovered a few hundred meters above the garbage planet. Looking down from above, the planet’s bare ground could be clearly seen.

Chu Rong took his mecha to the exit hatch, counted the number of people, and glanced backward. Not seeing Qiao Zhiya, he furrowed his brow, suspecting that he might have returned to his room to research potions. Without dwelling on it, he instructed everyone to get into the mechas and then asked Lin Zhen, in the control room, to open the exit hatch.

The black-gold mecha flew outwards with a row of grey mechas. At the end, a brown mecha suddenly burst out and fell behind the grey mechs.

The members of the second team who were seeing them off were stunned, too shocked to warn them. Before they could react, the control room had already closed the hatch, cutting off their shouts.

A member at the rear of the first team quickly noticed a small tail behind them and promptly reported it to Chu Rong at the front. Upon receiving the message, Chu Rong glanced backward and spotted the brown mecha timidly trailing behind. His face darkened, and he signaled the team to pause before beckoning the brown mecha over with a wave of his hand.

The brown mecha became visibly stiff, and then flew obediently to him, hovering honestly.

Chu Rong opened a private channel with the brown mecha. Seeing the mecha hanging its head in readiness to listen to orders, Chu Rong found it difficult to scold. In the end, he just said in a low voice, “Keep up and don’t wander off.”

Qiao Zhiya’s ears happily perked up, and a busy response followed him.

The team continued forward, with a member of the first team looking at the two mechas flying ahead of them. They were filled with jokes they wanted to say, but the words were stuck in their throat, unable to be uttered, leaving them feeling choked up.

Chu Rong led the team out this time just to explore the basic situation of the planet, to confirm if it was truly “dead”. Therefore, the team members didn’t land; instead, they dispersed in formation, each carrying a detection device, to conduct their exploration.

Qiao Zhiya had no instruments, so he spread his magic and pretended that he had a device in hand.

Soon, the instruments transmitted the results back: the area they surveyed showed no signs of life whatsoever, confirming that it was indeed “dead”.

Chu Rong frowned. Just as he was about to lead them to another area for further testing, he noticed the brown mecha involuntarily descending bit by bit. Worried, he hurried forward to support it and asked, “What are you doing?”

Qiao Zhiya snapped out of it, sounding extremely excited. He exclaimed, “Underground, there’s a very strong energy fluctuation! It’s some really potent ore!”
