“His name is Luo Li, and he’s my apprentice.” The bearded man waved his hand at Luo Li who came over, stroking his beard proudly, and said, “Look carefully at how he assembles the mecha later. It will be beneficial for your future studies. Watch and learn.”

Probably because the screams from the audience were too loud, Luo Li quickly turned his head back, stretched out his hand to operate something on the table in front of him, and then continued to sit with his head bowed and wait for the game to start.

Qiao Zhiya regained his focus, looked sideways at the red eyes of the bearded man, and recalled Luo Li’s red eyes again. Curiosity overflowing in his mind, he finally whispered out his question, “Laoshi, his eyes and yours…”

“He’s your senior brother,” The bearded man interrupted him, said something vicious on purpose, and then explained with a smile, “You can customize your avatar here. He originally wanted to make it the same as mine, but the system did not allow the existence of the exact same avatar, so he settled for the next best thing – a boy who was a little taller than me with a beard. But I thought his beard was too intrusive, so I asked him to shave it off. I didn’t expect these little girls to like his appearance now, and even became his fans.” As he said that, the bearded teacher’s expression turned, as if he was thinking something that bothered him.

Qiao Zhiya imagined the baby-faced Luo Li’s avatar with a beard. After a moment of weirded-out silence, he asked again, “Then he…”

The bearded teacher retracted his expression, and stared at him fiercely again.

“I mean, senior brother…” Qiao Zhiya immediately corrected his appellation, a bit embarrassed while doing so. “I think he seems to be younger than me. Is it a bit inappropriate for me to call him senior…”

‘If I’m calling him that, isn’t it insinuating that he’s old? Will he be angry?’

“He’s younger than you?” The bearded man raised his voice subconsciously, and suddenly became angry. He couldn’t help but glare at Luo Li on the stage as he said, “He’s not young anymore. He’s probably a couple decades older than you. Bah! He should’ve gotten married ages ago if he stopped being so picky about his partner! People his age already have children, but all he does all day is clinging to his cigarettes, making his throat hurt! Sigh… I don’t know what he is going to do, he has been teaching for half a year, something I helped him to arrange. Now that there’s a competition going, he put a leave on his career to participate, saying that after he won, he’ll go back teaching in an upright manner. But isn’t my arrangement upright? All I did was give the school his resume and my recommendation… Many people want his position, but he doesn’t cherish it. I really…”

Qiao Zhiya was stunned, completely unable to match the bearded middle-aged man ramble thanks to the noise from the excited fans of Luo Li.

So the quiet boy on the stage was actually a smoking uncle? This, this is too much for him to handle.

He was dumbfounded when he heard it, but the auntie and sisters around him were so angry that they couldn’t help but turned their heads and yelled at the bearded man, saying, “Why do you anti-fans keep slandering him! Can you stop already! Do you think he made it to the final by pure fucking luck?! Yes! Xiao Luo Li did not use his real face, and he did turn on a voice changer, but who doesn’t change his appearance on the Internet? We might like him for his appearance and character, but we like his skills also! It’s useless for you to be jealous!!”

The aunties and sisters were so excited. After one roared, thousands of people would follow suit. The momentum was overwhelming.

Qiao Zhiya, who was subjected to cyber violence for the first time, was flabbergasted. Meanwhile, the bearded teacher had a shit-eating grin on his face, as if he was holding back a laugh. But soon, he couldn’t help but glare at Luo Li – who was shot lying down, really – on the stage, then dragged Qiao Zhiya to another position where there were fewer people. They sat down and opened the privacy screen for watching the game.

“Why haven’t I seen this bastard attract girls so much in the real world!” The beard on the bearded man’s face was raised up and down. Obviously he was very angry, so Qiao Zhiya hurriedly comforted him, full of lingering fear.

‘Is this the power of fans? It’s too scary.’

With a sound cue, the final finally started. A large screen suddenly fell from the sky, and a two-hour countdown box for the time limit of the match appeared.

The auditorium gradually quieted down, and the bearded man also calmed down. He pointed to the countdown card and explained, “The production of mechas on VR World does not need to use various instruments like in the real world, so it saves a lot of time and the installation speed will be faster. You will mainly look at your senior brother’s mecha sorting method. The system will use the energy perspective to display the process, so please watch carefully.”

Qiao Zhiya nodded to express his understanding, and concentrated on watching.

This mecha manufacturing competition has lasted for more than a month. In the previous competition, the players have produced most of the parts needed to assemble a mecha in batches according to the content of the competition. So the final round was a test of the players’ ability to assemble a complete mecha with the parts they made in the previous competition.

This kind of schedule was to test the players’ ability to make mechas, and the second was to test the players’ ability to design mechas. It could be said that the winner was almost equal to being recognized as a real mecha designer and manufacturer.

Before the final product came out, no one knew what kind of mecha these contestants would assemble.

Luo Li, who had been sitting quietly all this time, finally moved after the start of the match. He walked to the huge manufacturing platform very calmly, took a look at the pile of parts displayed on it after the start of the game, and started assembling it directly.

The aunties and sisters screamed again, as they thought his calm and confident appearance was very cute.

The bearded man pretended not to see the overly excited faces of the audience around him. He only asked Qiao Zhiya to watch Luo Li’s assembly technique carefully.

Qiao Zhiya’s mecha manufacturing learning progress was still at the most elementary stage of material processing, and he has never even touched the parts. He was completely unfamiliar with the assembly of mechas, and had only seen it once in Master Ren’s workshop. At this moment, he watched Luo Li skillfully and quickly assemble the various parts together, and slowly put together the appearance of a mecha. This gradual build-up really excited him.

‘It’s amazing, I hope I can learn this step as soon as possible and make a real mecha!’

It only took Luo Li half an hour to put together the skeleton of the mecha, and then he spent another half an hour carefully adjusting the connections and positions of the various parts of the mecha, and then finally, he gave the mecha an armor as the protective outer shell.

With one hour left in the match, he stood in front of the mecha. He put his hand on the mecha, and did not move.

“It’s started.” The bearded man reminded Qiao Zhiya in a low voice.

Qiao Zhiya hastily leaned forward and looked more carefully.

The moment Luo Li put his hand on the mecha, the mecha model standing on the spot suddenly and slowly became translucent. The inner parts turned into gray blocks of different shades, clearly showing the structure of the internal parts. Then a ball of white light appeared from Luo Li’s palm, spreading towards the whole mecha from the connection of his hand.

“This is the penultimate assembly process – spiritual power combining. The purpose is to connect the various parts of the mech in a unified way, clear the channel of spiritual power, so the mecha fighters can drive more smoothly without worrying about the possible clog. If such things happen, it could be fatal in a battlefield, as the mecha can move sluggishly or even freeze,” The bearded man explained carefully.

Qiao Zhiya nodded, feeling suddenly enlightened.

No wonder spiritual power was so indispensable in the manufacturing of mechas. It turned out that not only the material processing, but also the final assembly process of the mechas required the usage of spiritual power. And the quality of the spiritual power did directly affect the process and the result.

The white light spread very quickly, covering the entire mecha almost immediately. Then Luo Li moved again. He sat on the ground, his hands still pressed against the mecha, and closed his eyes.

“Spiritual power has fully covered the mecha, and it is about to start the washing and combining process,” The bearded man continued his explanation.

After closing his eyes, another ball of white light appeared under Luo Li’s palm. The white light covered the whole body of the mecha at a faster speed than before, and then after wrapping the mech completely again, it slowly penetrated into the mecha. It connected the spiritual power channel, the circuitry, and the various internal connections within.

And as the white light washed away, the colors of parts with slightly different transparency in the perspective view of the mecha gradually unified. The appearance and color of the mecha became more complete and uniform, looking like an actual finished mecha.

Qiao Zhiya looked at the perspective view of the mecha displayed in the middle of the field, excited but also frustrated.

Excited, as he finally came into contact with the most important part of mecha manufacturing; but frustrated because it was because of this that he realized how difficult the manually-piloted mecha that Chu Rong and Master Ren had researched was.

After watching today’s almost show-like mecha assembly process, if he hadn’t gotten to know Master Ren and Chu Rong first, he might have thought that manually-piloted mechas were just a joke.

Innovation was already so difficult, but what Chu Rong and Master Ren had to do was far more than that.

Another half an hour passed, and the mecha was thoroughly sorted out. Luo Li stood up amidst the encouragement of the audience, and started the last assembly process — installing the driving system and protection system of the mecha.

Ten minutes before the end of the game, a small silver-white mecha finally took shape. It stood quietly in place, like a pearl waiting to be picked up, exuding a fascinating brilliance.

“It’s a small mecha specializing in speed. This is a good attempt,” The bearded man nodded in relief, and didn’t pay attention to the results of the competition. He took Qiao Zhiya back to the classroom in a daze, handed him a new textbook, and then went offline to rest.

Qiao Zhiya came back to his senses, looked down at the textbooks in his hand that were full today’s materials. He suddenly felt inadequate in comparison, so he just directly went offline.

After taking off the helmet, he found that Chu Rong had gone to bed early again. The Marshal was sitting against the headboard, flipping through his and Chu Yan’s training schedule with a face full of impatience and disgust.

Qiao Zhiya stretched out his arms to hug Chu Rong’s waist, put his face against his waist, rubbed it lightly, and whispered, “Come on, I will work hard for you. Let’s realize your wish together.”

Chu Rong was rubbed until he became stiff. His expression became a little tense. He moved his legs, put away the training schedule to look at Qiao Zhiya’s tender eyes. Class has resumed?”

“Yes, my class will officially start tomorrow,” Qiao Zhiya replied, arching his body upwards so he could lean against Chu Rong’s chest instead.

Then, Qiao Zhiya turned over and rolled into the quilt, closed his eyes and said, “Early to bed and early to rise. I can study more efficiently with a healthy mind. Good night.”

‘Good night? Sleep now?’ Chu Rong thought as he looked at the youth’s small figure rolled into a stupid-looking burrito. His expression was a bit dark, but he relented and waited for him to fall asleep before turning off the lights. After that, he laid down, hugged Qiao Zhiya, and tucked the youth’s head into the crook of his neck.

‘This Bald Chicken sleeps after teasing me. Truly a pig.’
