The next day, Qiao Zhiya, who wasn’t woken up by anyone, didn’t wake up until lunchtime.

As soon as he crawled out of the quilt and was about to get out of bed to wash up, he was held down by the elusive old butler. Then, a communicator was held to his face, showing a certain familiar someone.

“Are you awake?”

Chu Rong’s cold voice came from the communicator’s screen.

His dazed consciousness immediately snapped back into place and he stared wide-eyed at the communicator in the old butler’s hand.

“Go take a shower first, and I’ll call you in half an hour.”

The communication hung up, and Qiao Zhiya looked up at the old butler.

The old butler patted him on the shoulder, sighed, and said, “You didn’t answer the communication last night. Second Young Master was confused, so he asked me to take a look… Young Master Qiao Zhiya, your health is very important, you can’t stay up all night.”

‘Stay up… all night?’

“Chu Rong knows about that?” He was so frightened that his ears perked up, flustered.

The old butler looked at him sympathetically. He nodded and left.

He was stunned as he watched the old butler leave. After a few seconds of pure silence, the realization hit him and he immediately hid inside the quilt again. ‘It’s over, it’s over, Chu Rong is about to get angry!’

After washing up anxiously, he sat at the dinner table, brunch foods served for him. He obediently called Chu Rong.

The other side picked it up immediately, and the holographic figure of Chu Rong sitting on the sofa appeared in the air. The two looked at each other silently for a few seconds. Chu Rong squinted his eyes and said, “Eat breakfast first, don’t be a picky eater.”

Qiao Zhiya immediately straightened his posture. He took a bun into his hand, and was about to chew it, when he thought of something. He looked up at Chu Rong again, and asked, “You, do you want to have breakfast with me?”

Chu Rong looked at his expectant expression, which was muddied by a hint of caution. The depression that had been suppressed all night easily dissipated, and he clicked on the communicator, and then the mid-air image disappeared. In its place, a clear, 3D holographic projection of Qiao Zhiya, the food, and the table appeared. He got up, picked up a stool and put it on the projected table, and sat down opposite Qiao Zhiya.

Qiao Zhiya, who had never used this mode to communicate with others, stared in shock. He reached out to touch Chu Rong, who looked very realistic. His eyes lit up, and he called, “Chu Rong, you— —”

His hand passed through Chu Rong’s body, so the projection blurred. Qiao Zhiya almost threw himself on the table.

Chu Rong stretched out his hand to help him, but it was empty. After a pause, he silently withdrew his hand. He suddenly felt that it was a mistake to choose this chat mode, and explained, “This is the realistic holographic chat mode1clarification: there’s normal call, video call, projected hologram – you can think of it as a bigger screen projected into mid-air, so the image is still flat, but it’s all holographic. This one, the holographic image is realistic and 3D.. What we see each other is each other’s projection. It’s all light reflection.”

Qiao Zhiya stood up straight with his arms propped up, observed carefully, and found that his figure was indeed abnormally transparent. Slowly, his expression became more downcast. “So it’s a projection…”

“Let’s eat,” Chu Rong stated. Because this was still a long-distance call, Chu Rong didn’t know how to comfort him, so he just eased his expression and gestured to the food on the table. “Take a good rest after eating, and don’t stay up late anymore.”

“…Okay,” Qiao Zhiya nodded.

Forcing to cheer himself up, he picked up the bun again. Then, he had an idea. He dragged a stool closer to his side. Then, as he glanced at Chu Rong, his ears fluttered. “This way we can get closer.”

Chu Rong put his arms on the back of his chair, making a pose of trying to hug him. He nodded. “Well, eat quickly, or it will get cold.”

Qiao Zhiya hastily moved to his side again, and smiled happily at him. As he bit into his bun, he had a silly smile on his face, clearly satisfied.

“Stupid.” Chu Rong’s eyes softened. Subconsciously, the corner of his mouth turned up.

Chu Rong was very free that day, so he patiently ate with him, watched an after-meal movie, and accompanied Qiao Zhiya as he played with his nest of rabbits. He only hung up his call once Fan Xiangnan approached him with news during dinner time.

The familiar figure around him disappeared. Qiao Zhiya moved to the area where Chu Rong “sat” just now. He grabbed the sofa’s pillow, and buried his face into it.

After returning to school, Qiao Zhiya was busy with his pre-match preparations. Although Master Shang didn’t ask for the result of the competition, he still did his homework as thoroughly as possible, and even secretly studied a bunch of mecha blueprints for inspiration.

He knew that with his current learning progress, it was impossible to make a real mecha, so he thought of a shortcut — he would temporarily abandon the traditional mecha manufacturing method. Instead, he would incorporate the magical mechanical method, which he was already familiar with.

Thankfully, he was very clear about the dwarven ways of crafting. In the past two days, he flipped through the books left by his parents, and finally found a magic mechanical product that was very close to the mecha — a magic puppet.

Magic puppets, as the name suggests, are puppets driven by magic. It came with various shapes and sizes. They are a kind of anthropomorphic machinery that the dwarves once designed as weapons, but in the end they were reduced to toys.

In the past, because he had no magic power, he could only specialize in weapon forging, and had little contact with magic puppets. In addition, this thing was reduced to a toy in the end, and the production method was simplified to the very basic. When he came into contact with it, it had become very ordinary, similar to other mechanical dolls, so he didn’t pay much attention to it.

But now, it became a treasure in his hand.

Different from the toy-shaped magic puppets, the magic puppets originally designed as weapons were very close to the mechas of this world. However, unlike mecha, both the circuitry, power supply, and control commands were driven by magic stones. Also, compared to mechas, magic puppets moved very, very slowly. It was bulky and cumbersome, unable to be driven manually or fly. It could only be moved by magic power.

It was powered by various arrays and magic stones, but the power conversion wasn’t efficient. The cost performance was too low, and that’s precisely why it’s no longer used as a weapon. The production method had long been abandoned.

In short, this puppet looked daunting and scary, so it’s only used to scare off hostile parties. While its fighting power wasn’t too bad, it wasn’t as efficient as a frontal assault using traditional weapons.

Qiao Zhiya’s father is a knowledgeable elf who likes to study new things. After accompanying his wife and children to the dwarf village, he immediately noticed the existence of the magic puppet and became very interested in it. After studying it for a while, he left behind many notes, and from these notes, Qiao Zhiya learned about the history of magic puppets.

Now, he regretted that he didn’t look through the things his father gave him because he didn’t have magic power, but he was also thankful that he listened to Master Shang’s words and participated in this competition, thus discovering this.

Flipping through this, he found that the magic puppet gave him far more surprises than that.

First of all, the magic puppet was cumbersome and slow because its joint connection method was not advanced enough and the dwarves had not invented a high-tech driving system. But here in the Federation, the joint connection method and advanced driving system were all ready-made. As long as he mastered the magic puppet’s production method – that is, the mechanical parts – he could think of a way to improve its old parts.

With this method, he may be able to go to the end of this competition and make a unique mecha; secondly, the production method of the magic puppet was similar to the Federation’s traditional parts-making, so it’s easy for Qiao Zhiya to learn all of them. One month should be enough for him to master this. Finally, and most importantly, he found that the method to drive the mecha puppets was different from traditional mechas. It does not rely on spiritual power at all.

If the magic crystal core, the source of power of the magic puppet, is replaced with a mecha engine, the joints and driving system of the puppet are fixed, and then the magic array induction method on the magic puppet is applied to humans… then this would be a real, purely manually-driven mecha.

The reason why the magic puppet can be controlled is that all the important joints on its body are engraved with magic circles that can sense the fluctuation of magic power. The driver only needs to wave their hands imbued with magic power to control it.

If the principle of this magic array induction is transferred to the driver, so that when the driver is attacked and wants to fight back and give a physical response, the mecha can immediately sense and give a response synchronously. With this kind of driving method, wouldn’t its attack efficiency be the same as traditional mecha?

–The thing is, the reason why manually-driven mecha isn’t comparable to spiritual power-driven ones is that its input method is less intuitive and far longer. With spiritual power-driven mecha, the pilot can drive it with their easy body motions, while manually-driven ones rely on a series of button inputs. This is the biggest weakness of the manually-driven mechas!

Now, if he succeeded in changing that… if he could make the manually-driven mecha be controlled by the pilot’s intuitive body movements… wouldn’t this completely eliminate that weakness?

But in this way, pure manually-driven mechas would inevitably have high requirements of the pilot’s physical fitness, and even their martial arts ability. Some high-end movements that could be performed with spiritual power might not be able to be performed by manually-driven mechas, because piloting the former only requires far simpler gestures compared to the real mecha movement, as it would be transmitted via spiritual power… Maybe… can this be remedied by improving the performance of the mecha?

But if he wanted to improve the performance of the mecha… No, no, these are the things that should be considered after the mecha is successfully manufactured. The first thing to consider is how to synchronize the body movements of the mecha and the driver…

His train of thoughts were interrupted by a sudden communication request.

Qiao Zhiya immediately looked, and it was a call from Chu Rong. Overjoyed, he hurriedly put away all the materials, and crawled under the quilt to answer the call.

In the next second, a projection of a figure appeared beside the bed, as if Chu Rong was really in front of him.

“Can you sleep with me today too?” He asked expectantly, his eyes bright.

Chu Rong also went to his bed and laid down, adjusted the projection position so that the two of them seemed to be lying side by side on the same bed. He whispered, “Sleep, I will accompany you.”

Qiao Zhiya immediately smiled and narrowed his eyes, inching closer to the projection. He closed his eyes.

Chu Rong looked at him, raised his hand and landed on his projection. He traced the youth’s outline, then leaned over to “kiss” his forehead.

A few days later, news came from the Empire that the old Emperor was in good health, and Chu Rong was praised as a “lucky star” by him, and he refused to let Chu Rong come back home. At the same time, the Imperial High Advisor suddenly received a large reward and was frequently called into the palace by the Emperor.

Time passed quickly, and just when Qiao Zhiya had thoroughly mastered the method of making the magic puppet, the first round of the 1106th Star Network Mecha Manufacturing Competition finally kicked off.

At 7:30 in the evening, Qiao Zhiya entered the player’s room on time to wait for the game, feeling very depressed.

It has been a month, and Chu Rong has been unable to come back since then. Plus, he has not been in contact with him for several days. According to Chu Huai, it was because Chu Rong was dragged to some stupid planet by the Emperor to recuperate, and he cannot escape temporarily.

‘I thought that Chu Rong would come to see my first game…’ Just as he was thinking about it, a line of words suddenly flashed in the middle of the screen:
