Yuan Xiu followed him into the arena in an absent-minded fashion.

The countdown ended and the odds stopped changing. Qiao Zhiya looked down at the leg joint parts and materials that appeared on the table and wiped the sweat from his palms . ‘Chu Rong had paid a lot of money. What if I got eliminated?’

He was not nervous at first because of Chu Rong’s large bet. He turned his head to look at the auditorium that was once again occupied by the crowd. He stood up and said thank you as usual, then sat back and turned on the muting function. After calming down, he picked up a material and took out his hammer.

When the audience saw him starting to fiddle with the materials again, they miraculously found that they were no longer surprised. They were silent and began to guess what he was planning to do this time – was he going to make a major replacement of the materials in the joints?

But they guessed wrong. Qiao Zhiya only changed the material of the adapter shaft this time, and left everything else unchanged.

The assembly started quickly, and the audience looked at his still smooth operations. The audience who wanted him to advance felt relieved, while those who wanted him to be eliminated became anxious.

Then soon, the reactions of the two groups of viewers were reversed.

The leg joint parts that needed to be made for this competition were at the knees. Two parts were required, which was simpler than the ankle parts.

However, the parts of the mecha’s leg joints were quite special and were classified into many categories based on their effectiveness. For elementary-level parts, it could be assembled in under 30 minutes, an intermediate-level part could be assembled in around 40 minutes, while the advanced-level part needed 1 hour at the least.

There were a total of six base materials provided on the console, two for each level. Players can choose according to their own level.

At first, as the audience expected, Qiao Zhiya took the elementary-level ones, but after five minutes of installation, he turned his hands to the advanced-level material and started to “transform familiar materials into completely unfamiliar ones”. Then, he installed them. After that, he solely focused on the advanced-level materials.

The audience was confused.

‘What was going on? Are you planning to make a hybrid part?’

But Qiao Zhiya was a first-year student – no matter how talented he is, he wasn’t someone with rich experience under his belt. Even if he learned beyond his study level, there’s only so much competition time. How could he make a hybrid part, that was leagues harder than advanced-level ones? Does he want to finish the game?

It’s as if someone began to light fire under their feet – the audience began to stir up debate.

Luo Li couldn’t understand anymore and asked in confusion, “What are you doing, junior brother? Do you want to challenge yourself here?”

“No,” Master Shang shook his head. Frowning slightly, he looked thoughtful, “I talked to Master Ren once, and he said that Qiao had a patent for a modified mecha joint adapter shaft. The first part that Qiao changed was that part, but now it seems that he didn’t just change that one part.”

Luo Li still didn’t understand. “Even if he did that, there’s no need to mix materials of different grades. In this way, the final parts are likely to be different due to the different quality of each material. There’s a chance that the system would judge it as unqualified.”

Master Shang recalled the place where the elementary-level materials that Qiao Zhiya first installed. Something flashed in his mind. “Let’s continue to watch him. Don’t be anxious.”

Time passed little by little, and as the competition progressed–

By the 50th minute, the joint parts in Qiao Zhiya’s hands were roughly formed. They looked obviously thicker than ordinary mecha joints, but in terms of precision, they were at the level of high-end parts.

When an hour was up, Qiao Zhiya finally stopped. He put the bulkier part aside, and started making the second part.

He still started on using the elementary-level material, then switched to the advanced-level ones midway through installation.

The audience still couldn’t figure out his intention. Seeing that he actually made a joint part that seemed to be quite successful, they began to murmur in their hearts, secretly looking forward to the system’s judgment after he completed both joint parts.

Watching Qiao Zhiya’s installation process again, Master Shang finally confirmed his guess. With a smile on his face and said, “He is feeding parts.”

Luo Li was confused and asked: “Feeding parts? Why would he do that?”

“Simple, he ‘feeds’ the elementary-level ones to the advanced-level ones to make it bigger.” Master Shang replied with a smile, pointed to the part he had made, and explained, “The mecha he designed must be larger than the maximum size of ordinary mechas. The materials provided by the competition only count for standard mecha sizes, and can only be changed into smaller ones using the system. In order to increase the size of the parts he made, he used relatively large low-level materials as cushion, as they are not as precise as the high-leveled ones. It’s very suitable for ‘feeding’.”

Luo Li frowned and understood. This was indeed novel, so he was awed by his junior. “Master, you mean that he had designed a mecha before the game? He wanted to compete until the end?”

“That should be the case.” Master Shang nodded happily, a smile formed despite his effort to suppress it. “He is more ambitious than I thought, and his thinking is very open and flexible. Unlike you, who is completely rigid. His attempt this time is very good, breaking the public’s understanding of various levels of parts.”

After hearing this, Luo Li looked at Qiao Zhiya who was immersed in installing parts on the stage. He was silent for a few seconds and couldn’t help shaking his head and laughing.

This cheap junior brother looks cute and has a soft personality, so he didn’t expect him to be so decisive and unconventional in making mechas. He used novel practices, showing his ingenuity and vast knowledge. His practical ability involved in this was simply terrifying.

‘Surely, the future generation is terribly good.’

With 10 minutes left in the game, Chu Rong finally came online and teleported in, still using his main account. But the audience had no time to pay attention to him. All their attention was on the parts in Qiao Zhiya’s hands.

There were only a few high-leveled materials left on the table, and they would wait at most 3 minutes before deciding whether the two bulkier hybrid parts could pass the system review and whether their bet would make or lose money.

As soon as Chu Rong came in, he saw the bulky joint part on the countertop. Thinking of the design drawing he saw before, the veteran mecha warrior god leaned on the back of his chair, assuming an inscrutable look for the first time in a long while.

“Bang!” the sound of the last part being installed seemed to ring in his ears. Qiao Zhiya put the parts on the table and waited for the system to judge his work.

The audience also waited with bated breath.

However, as if teasing them, the system prompt that usually displays the results as soon as the parts are completed, didn’t appear on time.

Qiao Zhiya was confused. He stood up, picked up the two parts, placed them in the center of the console, and then looked towards the mid-air where prompts were popping up. The audience also followed suit.

There was still no announcement, no notification, nothing. The game time was about to end, and it drove the audience crazy.

Under normal circumstances, the system would give a clear result regardless of whether the player was promoted or not. What does it mean that there was no accurate result now? Also, the game time was almost over but there was no result yet. If the time ran out, would it count as promotion or direct elimination?

It was the last 30 seconds on the timer. Qiao Zhiya finally became anxious and moved the parts around, hoping it would fix it. Still no response, his ears stood straight up with worry, and he started looking for a communication method to contact the competition officials.

Chu Rong also frowned, his eyes were cold, as if he wanted to bore two holes in the console. His fingers began to tap his knees impatiently, thinking about how to go to the competition official to settle the score.

In the last 5 seconds of the countdown, just when Qiao Zhiya finally found the player help button and sent a communication to contact the official, a system prompt appeared.

[Round complete. Parts level: advanced. Parts value: special-grade. Contestant has successfully advanced to the next round.]

“Ding!” Just as the countdown reached zero, the odds representing Qiao Zhiya’s promotion light up with green light, and the system begins to settle accounts for all bettors.

Not only did Qiao Zhiya succeed, his part was also valued as special-grade.

Qiao Zhiya breathed a sigh of relief. He stood up and started to communicate with the audience, bowed towards the audience, thanked them, and glanced at Chu Rong on the stage. His ears twitched in satisfaction, then he directly chose to log off.

The audience was stunned for a few seconds. After repeatedly confirming that the level of the part was special-grade, they all exploded into cheers of joy, disbelief, or fury.

Chu Rong narrowed his eyes and listened to the crazy yelling of the audience who wished Qiao Zhiya to be eliminated for a while. He snorted coldly and chose to go offline.

“It’s amazing. A first-year student can actually make special-grade, advanced parts. That’s at least… a third-year curriculum, right?” Qiu Guangji sighed in the corner of the auditorium. After taking a look at the gambling money he had received, he logged off with satisfaction.

After Qiao Zhiya logged off, he forgot about this game and began to prepare for the next round. However, a big debate started on Starnet about his performance in this round.

First of all, the system did not give out the result after Qiao Zhiya finished the parts. Is it because they  – the competition officials – were worried about Qiao Zhiya’s identity and Chu Rong’s large bet, so they secretly tipped it in Qiao Zhiya’s favor? Secondly, was Qiao Zhiya’s modification like this allowed by the system? If he could pass the competition with such chaos, then what’s with the qualification standards for this competition? Finally, as a Marshal, was there any problem with Chu Rong personally participating in betting?

This debate became even more heated, and it gradually turned into a national-scale debate. As time passed, the popularity increased instead of decreasing. Even the Empire was alarmed and joined in the discussion. Qiao Zhiya’s name was also officially passed on all over the Blue Galaxy.

T/L: fun fact: I almost got crazy during translating this chapter’s long passage of technical/engineering stuff! I hate physics!!!
