ACT I

The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 15
The Past, The present and The Beginning

Hans gobbled everything quickly at dinner and ran to his chambers. Besides reading the book, he also visited and made new friends today. As its name suggested, the book Limitless was a collection of spells for mages, and that reasonably ended his hopes of becoming a knight. He loved swordsmanship, so giving up the sword was saddening for him, but like a mule he continued to pour the fruitless efforts into it on the following evening.

While practising the sword, the thoughts of his uncertain life without this weapon in hand came to his mind and a bit of an anger rose within him towards his fate. In the fit of anger he did the practice several times this day, that made him more tired. After the dinner, he laid in the bed to rest a little before reading the book, but the dream fairy pulled down his eyelids and he fell asleep.

Like every night, Sierra visited his room to tuck him in properly. Hans was obsessed with books, and this was not his first time doing it. Whenever he found something interesting, especially a new book, he fell in trance and didn't see anything other than seeking its end.

The thirst for answers was the prime quality of a mage, and the boy was not lacking in that department. She kissed his forehead and bid farewell for the night and went on to her chambers.

Please get a hold of yourself, captain.
No mercy for Elves.
these abominations must die today
You cannot succumb to these monsters, captain.
They are diseases to get rid of

Hans was in an unfamiliar place and was seeing the unknown people shouting these things at him. He didn't understand what was going on, but his body was moving on its own. From what he could interpret from their words, they seem to encourage him to not waver.

He looked down and saw a long black-haired male Elf, beaten to death, growling at his feet and struggling for his life. He raised his head and glanced in his front where corpses of Elves piled up. The remnant Elves were staring at him with a devastating look. Hans could sense fear and hatred in those eyes.

The growling elf at his feet looked into Hans’ eyes and shouted in agony.

We are the descendants of god, flee my people so we would have another chance to strike back… make sure that no human could walk the Gena…

Hans's sword cut the pitiful man's words short in the middle, along with his head. This act of beheading the enemy increased the morale of the surrounding humans. The situation was baffling for Hans. He was himself but had no control over body like an observer seeing the things from someone else's perspective. But he could clearly feel the current emotions of achieving his life's goal. With the fall of Elf's head, the war cries of humans increased as they slaughter the fleeting elves.

after the massacre he looked towards sky and mumbled with a voice different from his,

if you are seeing this, then do not speak a word of it

These words woke him up with heavy breathing and a dry throat. This was more of a trance than a dream for him. Before waking up, Hans also felt the guilt rising inside the man in the dream, alongside his sense of accomplishment, as the hollow eyes of dying elves kept glaring at him. Hans kept searching for the water beside his bed to moist his parched throat.

He relaxed a little, knowing it was a dream, but the words at the end felt like a warning. The voice was clearly not his and seeing him executing with swords. The man was definitely someone else, and Hans was just an observer, possessing his body. This was the second time he saw something like this, but unlike the previous, which was undecipherable, it was full of gore and violence. He felt bad for the elves who died defenceless by the hands of other humans, but he couldn't do anything about the dream or future event that he might have seen, so instead of worrying about it, he heed the words from the man in the dream and looked outside the window to distract himself.

The sun had not risen yet, and the weather had its own opinion on the matter. It was pouring outside. So, just like any other boy, he snuggled himself inside the warm blanket and closed his eyes to continue his sleep.

SOMEWHERE COLD AND UNREACHABLE

The red eyes of a black-haired elf opened, and she mumbled,
So it has begun.

AT HANS’S ROOM

Today, Rudolf did not come to wake him up, but Hans, who failed to sleep after the weird dream, was moving around the house; the dawn was still young, and none of the elders had awoken yet.

Hans chose not to wake them and sat on the doorsill. It was his favourite place and no matter how much Sierra said it brought bad luck, Hans always sat on it. He was still thinking about the dream, which felt surreal, but he strongly felt that all those corpses in the ground were his doing; he didn't feel hatred or anger in himself, but only guilty when he massacred the Elves.

The man in the dream felt strong, stronger enough to beat Rudolf. as the words of the man resurfaced in his mind, he decided to bury the dream in his memories and focus his mind on his book. As he reached his bookmark, he started reading the sixth page under the light of the fireplace, lying on his stomach far from the doorsills.

PAGE 6

I believe the first experiment has given you trouble, so let’s begin with our second experiment, which is ‘planting a seed'.

Hans was doubtful and read again, but it was as he read earlier, so he continued further.

You must have seen treants creating the plants out of nothing. There was no origin, they just created the plant life with nothing. This was a significant discovery that led me to believe that the elves named this mana property more correctly than humans. It's really like life mana, just as mentioned in the ancient texts of Elves.

Life mana? Ancient Elven Text? Hans got more curious and continued.

I borrowed the ancient text from Clandor, of course, without asking them. I planned to return it to them before long, but it sure created the havoc in Clandor and the Elven Council were searching it like madmen. Seeing them in trouble was a pleasing sight for Elanor and Reina, the both were royals but had very little influence on Clandor because of the Council.

Hans laughed, imagining the faces of some crooked elders who lost something important. The fact of Samson stealing the protected document under the noses of Elves was amusing for the boy. He read further,

I have included some translations from the ancient text in the next book, named THE SOLAR MAGE. I'll disclose its location at the end of this book. This is the second and the last book you must have. So where were we? Ah yes, put a seed inside an empty pot without giving it any soil, sunshine, and water. You need to supply mana from outside into the seed, like controlling the flow of it. Be cautious if you give it in huge amounts, it might break it.

To achieve this, you must learn the treant’s way of manipulating mana regularly. If my hypothesis is right, as it should be. It's my hypothesis after all, you will learn their way quickly.

This experiment will become the foundation for you to manipulate nature’s mana, and how much you take control from nature in one go will determine the scale of your spell. Because the spell we will develop here does not contain circles like others, it can be as grand as the seventh circle or as small as the first circle. There is no restriction. It solely depends on you, imagine yourself at the front of the well (nature), the well contains unlimited water and you have a bucket which can draw water (mana) from the well, it depends on your own strength how big of the bucket you can pull from it.

You need to keep doing two things: first, increase the size of the bucket by honing the method of tapping in nature’s mana, and the second one to increase your control over it. Good luck with this experiment. I believe you will be successful in these trials. It might take a lot of time, but if you build a solid foundation here, you will have fast progress in upcoming spell creations.

End of page 6

Hans closed the book with a grin on his face since Treants have taken a liking to him so he could just ask them to teach him. But it was not the sole reason for his grin. The title of the second book, "The solar mage," was piquing his curiosity.

All he knew about mana attributes was Elementals like fire, water, earth, and wind. For advanced attributes such as magma, Wood, ice, and thunder. Dark and light were rare. That's all there was to it, but Sam mentioned Solar, which was not even in the unrecorded family of mana. He wanted to inquire about this from the elders, but sadly, they were currently asleep.

Another thing that grabbed his interest is that Samson would teach spells unlike his profession of knight. It was hard to believe that a knight could theorise the powerful spells of a mage, but knowing him, the spells might become the table turner for him.

He mentioned the strength of the spell totally, depending on how well he could control the mana. He was giggling, lying on the floor, and barely noticed the pair of eyes staring at him from behind.

The mana in pure form is a mixture of all mana families. It is called nature’s mana or Raw mana or Pure mana.

Samson wrote two books for Hans

Book of spells - Limitless
Book of day - The solar mage

The only record of whom the books he gave to is in the last book called Mandate. Soon the war for these books will start and Hans will be at the centre of it. Parv will rise again and that will turn the world upside down.
