“Ugh…”

Deltinus twisted his body, barely opening his eyes. The first thing he saw was a wall covered in damp moss. It didn’t take him long to realize that the foul-smelling dark room was the innermost cell of the dungeon.

Deltinus jumped up, but no strength entered his body. To make matters worse, his limbs were bound in heavy shackles.

“Ahhhhh!”

Deltinus’ screams collided with the wall and dispersed. The arm that had changed due to the blood of the monster did not move no matter what. He couldn’t even feel it. He remembered what had happened to Yulif before he lost his mind.

‘Did Yulif disable my arm? He can’t do this. This can’t be…!’

Deltinus writhed on the floor. His chains made a rattling noise.

“Is there no one here? Anybody? Somebody? Unlock these now and call a healing wizard. My arms are weird. Can’t you hear me!??!  Call a healing wizard!”

The only one who listened to the terrible cries was the rat squeaking in a small crevice beyond the wall. ‘Such trash! Do you think you will be able to survive even if you despise me like this?’ Deltinus started pounding his forehead on the hard stone floor as his anger did not go away even after screaming his lungs out. Thump, thump, thump! The skin of his forehead cracked and blood gushed out. Red blood flowed down and stained his eyes red.

The emperor was injured. The ruler of the empire was injured. But why was no one coming to see him? Why should he be locked up in the dungeon and not Yulif? Why, why did this happen! It wasn’t him who broke the oath, it was Yulif!

A shadow fell over Deltinus, who spit out the blood that had flowed into his mouth. He raised his head and looked at the master of the shadow, revealing his teeth like a beast.

“Yulif… After everything, you are strangling me.”

“Do you want to live?”

Yulif asked in a calm tone. Deltinus, who did not understand the question for a moment, gave a blank expression, and Yulif spoke again.

“If you answer honestly that you want to live, I will spare you.”

His tone and voice were utterly dry, but the content was terribly humiliating. Deltinus’ eyes blazed with hatred and anger.

He didn’t like it at all. The one who should be imprisoned in a dungeon and who should be crawling should not be himself, but Yulif. Him! He should be the one standing proudly and uprightly and looking at Yulif like he was insignificant garbage.

He used ancient magic tools passed down from generation to generation in the imperial family, and even drank the blood of savage monsters. He literally threw everything he had, but Yulif survived and treated himself like a petty creature. To be honest, the tone of ‘I will spare you’ and showing mercy was offensive to him, it was humiliating.

Deltinus struggled with both legs, which were able to move somewhat. It was as if he was unaware of the fact that doing so actually made he appear even more pathetic.

“I am the supreme master of the empire, and you are a traitor. No matter how great a wizard you are, you can’t take your sins lightly. Spare my life? What are you… How dare you judge my life. I am the king! The emperor!”

“Do you use the word emperor even for those imprisoned in a dungeon?”

“Something must be wrong. Count Enderk! Where is Count Enderk? Call the count! I drank the blood of a monster on the advice of the count, so the count should know what happened after that. Where is the count?”

“Well. He must be trapped here somewhere. A lousy shit just like you.”

“You…!”

“But it’s better than you. Because he’s a normal person on the outside.”

It was obvious contempt to see the slightly raised corners of his lips. You are not the emperor. You are a half monster that can’t even be a normal human. The words the purple eyes conveyed through silence were embedded in Deltinus’ heart.

Deltinus saw red. The old feelings of inferiority, fear, envy, and jealousy that had grown inside him for over 20 years were all about to explode with malice.

Yulif wiped a smile from his lips. Even so, there was nothing Deltinus could do. He neither destroyed Canaren’s happiness, nor made her unhappy. He was now a mad emperor who should disappear into history.

“Listen carefully.”

Yulif trampled on the ankle of the trembling Deltinus. The shackles enchanted to keep the criminal from escaping were crushed helplessly under his feet. The shackles crumpled like a piece of paper, pressing down on Deltinus’ ankles.

Deltinus glared at Yulif, even as he groaned in pain. Those eyes were full of life.

“I broke my oath, but I don’t want to break my promise to my mother.”

“Ah! Now you talk about mother. You’re not really sane either.”

“It doesn’t matter what you say. If you want to live, I will let you run away.”

At the unexpected suggestion, Deltinus narrowed his eyes. Yulif’s face, which was always undisturbed, was clean and tidy even in such a situation. He had no idea what the hell he was thinking.

After a while, Deltinus snorted.

“How can I believe that?”

“Whether you believe it or not, it’s your decision. But no matter how stupid you are, you know that it wouldn’t be strange if I killed you right here on the spot.”

“Me, stupid…?”

“Three days later, you are to be executed. Or you can get down on your knees and beg for your life. If you desperately want to live, scratch the floor with your nails, cry out and beg for your life. Then you can live.”

The position of the emperor, the undisputed power, and the subjects who followed him even in the lies. After all that was lost, the only thing left for Deltinus was his pride.

Born as the crown prince of the empire and ascended to the throne, he had never asked for anything from others. He never even thought of the word begging. He was a man whose hobby was to make people lick his feet and laugh at those who beg for their lives.

The world has changed. Everything he once enjoyed was taken away by his brother in front of him. Even the golden bird he so desperately wanted became Yulif’s possession. Nevertheless, Yulif was not satisfied and trampled on Deltinus’ last pride.

Still. He still had to live. Deltinus wanted to live. There was only one truth pointed to by the countless history of the empire. History belongs to the survivors. He did not survive because he was strong, but because he survived and became strong.

It’s okay to scratch and beg. He could get revenge as long as he lived. Yes, he could stand up again! One day, he would pull off that damn little brother’s head and put it on display at the gate. He would put the bird he loved and cared for so much under him!

Trembling, Deltinus moved his body. He fell flat at Yulif’s feet. And even though Yulif didn’t tell him to do it, he stuck out his tongue and licked his shoes.

“…Spare me.”

“I don’t feel your desperation.”

“…Ah! Don’t make me beg me like this. Aren’t I your only brother? Think of our mother, please, spare me. If you let me live, I will live like a dead mouse. I will never go near the Imperial Palace, no, I will never go near the capital again.”

“Can you swear?”

“Yes! I will! If you want, I will do it as many times as you want, hundreds of times. Just tell me how to do it.”

Deltinus raised his head and smiled sullenly. His face, smeared with filthy stains and scabs, was unbelievably filthy and mottled for an emperor. It was far from his usual dignified or prideful appearance.

Yulif released the shackles by magic. And he threw something at Deltinus. Instead of his motionless hand, Deltinus undid the rolled-up cloth with his mouth.

“…Ugh!”

It contained worn-out clothes and rags that smelled disgusting. Deltinus couldn’t stand the rising bile and vomited.

Yulif healed Deltinus’ arm with magic. Simply. It didn’t allow him to engage in vigorous activities such as holding or wielding a weapon, but it was enough for changing clothes.

“Change into these and go to the secret passage. Leave the palace and never come back. It’s not my mercy, but our mother’s mercy on you.”

Change clothes. Yulif spoke as if ordering. Deltinus wiped the saliva dripping from his lips and changed his clothes. All he had in his mind was to leave the palace and gather forces to take revenge on Yulif.

He would surely repay Yulif for today’s disgrace a hundredfold or a thousandfold. He would never kill him easily. He would make him struggle with terrible pain until the very end. Yulif will beg him for death, not life!

Yulif took Deltinus to the entrance to the secret passage in the dungeon. The entrance opened in response to the blood or magic of the imperial family. Deltinus was covered in rags, the rotten smell almost seemed to vibrate in the air. He entered the passage, and as soon as the entrance began to close, he screamed in anger.

“Hahahaha, Yulif! You will surely regret this decision now. The promise with our mother? How can you make a promise to someone who has been dead for over ten years? Wait and see, I will definitely come back to kill you!”

Just before the entrance completely closed, Deltinus saw. His younger brother was smiling coldly from beyond the entrance. He didn’t say anything, and he wasn’t angry. As soon as he saw that smile, coldness cut through his skin.

Soon, the entrance closed, and Yulif’s figure also disappeared. Nevertheless, his presence did not go away, it followed Deltinus like a shadow. Deltinus clenched his teeth.

How long has he been walking through the winding passage? A fork in three directions appeared. One to the main palace, one to the detached palace, and the other to the outside. The road markings were hidden on the wall. Deltinus found the sign by fumbling along the wall and chose the path leading out of the Imperial Palace.

There was only the sound of limping footsteps on the narrow road with minimal lighting on. Deltinus let out a shaky breath. He hit the floor because he couldn’t beat him, and his forehead ached and it seemed like he was having a fever. Had he known this would happen, he would have waited patiently.

The last time he saw Yulif’s sinister smile came to mind over and over again, and Deltinus struggled to erase his anxiety. He didn’t make the wrong choice. It was the best choice he could have made. So he repeated ‘It had to be so’. If this wasn’t the right choice, what would he become after licking Yulif’s shoes?

He reached the end of the road. Deltinus opened the door by manipulating the hidden device. The sight of Cisena immersed in darkness unfolded. It was the moment when he took a step outside, which was bright and vivid in color.

“The emperor! The mad emperor has appeared!”

“Catch him!”

“You killed my son… My son, you murderer!”

Multiple roaring cries rang out all at once. Puck! There was a dull sound, followed by a terrible pain in the back of the head. Deltinus, unable to grasp the situation, crouched down, clutching his head. As if waiting, clubs, stones, and kicks flew towards him.

“Ah, arrgh, ugh…!”

“Everyone died because of you. My husband and my son! They’re all dead!”

“How can you feed a living person to a monster? You’re a bastard!”

“I can’t forgive you. I will never forgive you…”

Those who burst into anger over Deltinus were family members, friends, and lovers of those who lost their lives at one time at his command. The anger and sorrow of those who had to unfairly lose their loved ones for ridiculous reasons poured out on Deltinus mercilessly. They ridiculed Deltinus’ ugliness.

“The noble emperor must have wanted to live as long as he could!”

“You, child of a devil. You’ve been punished for what you’ve done!”

The staff wielded by the gray-haired old man struck Deltinus in the back. Ahhh… ugh! Deltinus struggled with pain, but there was no way he could escape.

He was completely defeated. Yulif completely shattered Deltinus’ pride, without leaving a single piece.

Eventually, people lost the energy to scream and curse. And they scattered. Yulif and his knights, who were watching the entire thing, appeared from the darkness.

According to Yulif’s orders, the knights put the prisoner lying dead on the cart. They went through the gates and back into the dungeon, throwing Deltinus down like luggage in the last room. Yulif then left the prison. He didn’t bother to throw any last words to Deltinus, who was lying like a corpse.

The end suitable for a human who has ruined the lives of countless people and has turned into a monster was drawing close.
