The three had tea time on the balcony overlooking the garden. Roana stood a little further away and acted as an escort and messenger.

“When my uncle threw himself around me… Tears came out. My uncle is not afraid of swords and magic. I will definitely become a wonderful adult like him in the future.”

Lucian diligently told the story of Yulif saving himself from Deltinus. It seemed that the action of protecting him from sword-wielding knights was a very meaningful event to Lucian.

He must have been hurt by his father’s heart to kill him, but in Lucian’s eyes, his respect for Yulif and the relief of being freed from the emperor was clearer than fear. Canaren, who knew the true nature of Deltinus better than anyone else, was able to fully understand the relief Lucian felt.

“By the way, where did he go?”

“Yulif went to work. I don’t know the details, but he said he is busy preparing for your coronation.”

“Ah… He can’t even rest because of me… I’m sorry.”

Lucian quickly grew pale and bowed his head. Canaren smiled kindly and stroked Lucian’s head. Then she went, “Oh”, and quickly released her hand. She kept forgetting that this infinitely cute and young child was the crown prince who would become emperor after coronation.

“Forgive me, Your Highness. I’m not used to etiquette yet…”

“Oh, no! No! More, please! Please! Please pat me more!”

“Lucian, why are you being silly? The Duchess is embarrassed.”

“Ah, no, Mama, I didn’t mean that…”

Embarrassed by his mother’s harsh voice, Lucian looked at Canaren and Estella alternately, not knowing what to do.

Canaren burst into laughter first, followed by Estella. Lucian, who just realized that Estella’s harsh words were a joke, inflated his cheeks, saying it was too much. Canaren gently stroked Lucian’s hair. The child’s hair smelled fragrant and soft.

“I heard from my grandfather. You saved the duke with the special power of the Hwira people.”

“Ah… Yes. That’s true, but Yulif saved me first.”

At the cost of life, even going against time.

Canaren swallowed the truth and smiled instead. Estella nodded like she understood Canaren’s silence. Estella tilted the teacup and took a sip of the fragrant tea, then placed it down with a serious expression on her face.

“If it weren’t for the duke, neither I nor Lucian would be alive like this. I thanked him, but he didn’t answer. He said he was doing the right thing  So I came here to say thank you to his wife as well. And… Lucian wanted to see you.”

“Yes. I also wanted to meet His Highness Lucian. Thank you for coming first.”

“It’s true that someone who wants to say hello will come. Thank you. For saving me and my son. For freeing me from a hellish time.”

Estella politely bowed her head. Canaren was embarrassed and bowed her head in return. “Mama, Madam Canaren! Here’s a squirrel!” The two of them smiled as their eyes met as they raised their heads at the same time at Lucian’s cry.

The squirrel Lucian spoke of was sitting on the balcony railing and tilting its head. Lucian took a cookie and approached the squirrel cautiously. Estella looked at such a Lucian. A soft voice flowed.

“Uncle refused to be regent. He was so determined and terrifying that others did not even ask twice. I’m sorry. It would have been reassuring if he took over.”

“It’s… It’s the first I’ve heard of it. Is it okay to refuse? Do you know if there is any special reason?”

“Grandfather said that he wanted to return to Pionia as soon as possible. To be with his wife as much as possible.”

“Oh…”

Those mischievous words set Canaren’s face on fire. Estella laughed softly, finding it cute. She turned her head and looked out at the expansive garden. Canaren looked at the side of her sunken face and said as if possessed.

“The reason Yulif refused must have been because he believed that Your Majesty the Empress would do well. I think so.”

“Is that so?”

“I’m sorry. I’m off topic… … .”

“I think I can see why the duke and Lucian fell in love with you.”

“Yes?”

Estella answered with a smile without a word and called for Lucian. It was time for them to go. Lucian, who had just become acquainted with the squirrel, returned with a sad expression. Estella got up with her characteristic graceful movement.

“Thank you for taking the time. I came here to say thank you, but I am rather encouraged. I wish I could have eaten with you at least once before you leave for Pionia. Let’s make room next time.”

“Yes. I will definitely go with Yulif.”

“Come on, Lucian. Say goodbye too.”

Lucian hesitated, standing in front of Canaren. There was something he wanted to say, but it didn’t seem to come out easily. Canaren bent her knees and brought herself to Lucian’s eye level. Staring at the gentle and beautiful golden eyes, Lucian slowly opened his mouth.

“Um, maybe…”

“Yes, Your Highness. Please feel free to speak.”

“Maybe, later… Can you be my painting model?”

Canaren blinked. She remembered a picture that Lucian had given her through Estella one day. A painting of her running away from a monster, and Yulif protecting her. A scene from a fairy tale that Lucian had drawn became a reality. It was amazing how Lucian portrayed the two people who met a happy ending. Canaren replied with a bright smile.

“If it’s okay with you, I can do it!”

Upon hearing Canaren’s answer, Lucian’s face brightened. Estella gazed happily at the two who linked their pinky fingers and made a promise.

*******

Three days later, Deltinus was executed. The six imperial-faction nobles, including Count Enderk, carrying the emperor on their backs were also executed. There were so many people who were persecuted and had suffered because of them, so the public opinion among the citizens was very bad. With that in mind, the death penalty was carried out in public outside the city gates.

Yulif did not go to the location. He was at the top of a tower of the Imperial Palace with Canaren. It was the very tower where he explained to her the barrier, the day he first met her at the lake behind his villa.

The tower was so high that one could see the entire palace. It was a clear day, and there was nothing blocking the view, so if you had the will to see, you could even see the funeral home outside the castle gate. However, Yulif didn’t struggle and just hugged Canaren, who was sitting in front of him.

He cautiously asked Canaren, who rested her head on his shoulder.

“Is it okay?”

“It’s okay.”

Yulif answered bluntly. There was no reason not to be okay. He even crossed time to do this.

Deltinus never gave up on his greed and malice. His offer to spare his life was not just a lie. If Deltinus showed signs of remorse there, if he had asked for forgiveness from those who died because of him, he might have thought about it again.

However, Deltinus was indeed Deltinus. He resented Yulif to the end, wanted to kill him, and tried to put Canaren in pain. He, who was no longer human, had no ability to reflect; it was to the point it was laughable. And with that attitude, Yulif felt more at ease. Because he was able to decide for sure.

A black flag slowly rose from the top of the palace gate. It was a signal that the execution was over. The sound of a heavy horn trumpet shook the earth. It was too grandiose to be a shout to announce the end of a person who rose to a high position and horribly ruined the lives of many people with his overflowing anger.

Yulif felt a sense of emptiness as he listened to the trumpet sounds being scattered and leaving a vibration. It was so easy. So simple, but he had to come back a long way. It was okay though. As he kept what he wanted the most.

Yulif held Canaren dearly in his arms. In the same place as Yulif, Canaren, who was looking at the black flag, said,

「All living beings have something they hold in each hand since they are born.」

The words flowed out like a calm melody. It was a song. Yulif loosened his arms. The soft and strong wings of Canaren spread out like a flower.

「Life in the right hand, death in the left hand. They are always with us. In the daytime in spring and in the darkness of winter.」

It was a requiem, to pray for the rest of the dead and to commemorate the soul. Yulif closed his eyes. Canaren put her hands together as if she was praying.

This requiem was not for Deltinus. It was a song to comfort the countless people who were trampled on by him. It was a song to pass the time of Yulif, who could not escape from him and died of regret and remorse for a long time.

「So don’t be sad. Rest will be the seed for another beginning.」

Canaren did not know what kind of world was after her death, or whether there was another beginning after rest, like the lyrics of a song she put in her mouth. But she didn’t want to waste the time Yulif had saved against her fate. She did not want to suffer foolishly while being swayed by the nightmare of Deltinus.

This requiem was also a song for herself. It was a song to comfort the her who died in the other time of Yulif, whom she did not know. It was a song for herself, who had a new beginning.

「Hey, look at the soul that becomes a twinkling star and soars into the sky. I will become a star that shines freely and on you forever.」

There were still a few verses left, but Canaren stopped singing. This was enough, her own feelings were certainly fully conveyed. Folding her wings, she turned her body to face Yulif. Yulif opened his eyes slowly and spread his arms towards her. His eyes were wet with tears, as light as a forest after a brief rain.

Silly person. Canaren placed herself in his arms.

“Your bird is here. You should be relieved.”

“Yes. My bird, my light, my wife is here.”

The two of them, whose hearts and souls were tied together, would be together for a long time. Even without anyone telling them, Yulif and Canaren instinctively felt that fact.

No language was needed between them. Touching each other’s lips and feeling each other’s breath. That was enough.

*******

Lucian’s coronation was held in a grand and solemn manner in the Great Hall of the Imperial Palace. It was a large-scale event attended by all nobles with titles.

There were a lot of worried voices because bad things happened one after another at a few big events, but Yulif’s presence put an end to all anxiety at once. Thanks to the power contained in Canaren’s blood, Yulif’s body became one that would not tire no matter how much magical power was used.

Few people knew about it, and one of them, Roana, was more envious of that body than immortality to fire, causing a riot within her. Anyway, thanks to Yulif’s magic, the coronation was safely held.

“Those who wish to pay oaths of allegiance to His Majesty, the lord of the empire, who has been reborn into the sun, please come forward.”

The newly appointed chaplain exclaimed. Yulif, who had been waiting in advance, came forward first. Behind him, representatives of each family lined up. Lucian, who was sitting on the throne, came down from the platform with Estella.

Lucian, wearing a glittering crown and a red cloak embroidered with gold thread, certainly drew attention, but Canaren’s eyes were fixed only on Yulif.

Yulif, wearing a black and purple cloak that symbolized the imperial family, was more beautiful than any other kind of Yulif Canaren had ever seen. He had a solid body reminiscent of a sleek black panther, and a face that boasted arrogant beauty. Seeing him perfect from head to toe made her ecstatic.

She only hoped Yulif would finish his oath quickly and come by. She wanted to see more details of him.

Did he read her mind? Yulif knelt down on one knee. Admiration came out of the modest action. He would never know how Canaren covered her mouth with both her hands. Roana, standing to her left, leaned back and whispered.

“Do you like it that much?”

Nod nod nod. Canaren’s head moved up and down violently. Her gaze was nailed to Yulif.  What kind of rich food did he allow her to enjoy? Roana let out a long sigh and straightened her back.

“I, Yulif del Rubius, on behalf of the nobles and vassals of the Elemian Empire, I swear allegiance to Your Majesty. I will devote myself to Your Majesty as a sword that will not be broken by any adversity, as a shield that will not break. Eternal loyalty and glory to the Empire of Elemian and His Majesty.”

“Loyalty!”

A loud voice shook the Great Hall. Lucian stretched out his chest and raised his head proudly. He was still a child who had to grow for a long time, but his posture, attitude, and eyes were not less than other emperors.

“I am well aware that I have many shortcomings. Nevertheless, I will deeply engrave the hearts of the lords who swear allegiance to such a burden, and I will do my best to become a monarch who they will not be ashamed of. I sincerely appreciate your loyalty. As the Emperor of Elemian, I pray that the brightest light and blessing may be with us.”

“I’m in awe, Your Majesty.”

Lucian raised his sword and fell alternately on Yulif’s shoulders. It meant accepting the vassal’s oath of allegiance. The oath of allegiance ended when he bestowed the sword upon Yulif. As Yulif and the nobles returned to their seats, Lucian exclaimed in a clear voice.

“I hope the lords will help a lot with the things I lack. If you try to take the wrong path, please do not hesitate to criticize me. Everyone worked hard to get through the thick darkness. We have prepared a celebration, so let’s all enjoy it together.”

“Long live Your Majesty!”

“Long live the Empress Dowager!”

A magnificent music rang out announcing the accession of a new emperor. Everyone in the Great Hall cheered for the emperor and empress dowager.

A large hand rested on Canaren’s shoulder, who also applauded and cheered among them. Canaren’s face lit up as she looked back at Yulif.

*******

“Where are we going?”

“Anywhere you want to go.”

Yulif, ready to cast space movement magic at any time, hugged Canaren’s waist. The two were sneaking out, not attending the banquet that started after the coronation.

Wearing a gorgeous dress meant for the coronation, Canaren was dazzlingly beautiful. The specially prepared dress, thickly braided hair, and delicate accessories all seemed to exist just for her.

Yulif kissed her pinkish plump lips as if brushing against them. Canaren shrugged her rounded shoulders in embarrassment, but she didn’t avoid it.

“Tell me. Anywhere is good.”

“Really? Can I say anywhere?”

“Sure.”

There was no place Canaren, who had found her freedom out of the cage, could not go. Yulif imagined the sight of her spreading her wings and soaring into the expanse. Her flight without any restraints or shackles would be wonderful. It was such a great and undeserved happiness that he could be with her on that wonderful flight.

“I want to go to the village and see my mother, and I want to go to Pionia too. I want to see the white snow again, and I want to go to the sea. I want to try camping in the forest, um… Also, since Yulif is a wizard, it would be good if we pretended not to be us and go on an adventure! There are so many places I haven’t been to yet.”

Canaren’s eyes twinkled with vitality, saying each place she wanted to go. Yulif caressed her eyes and smiled sweetly. Canaren looked up at him and she snuggled close.

“Where shall we go first?”

“Let me go to the village and see my mother. Then we go back to Pionia and rest for a while, then head to the snowy North. When the snow gets tiring, I’d like to go to the sea. And when the sea gets boring, we can go to the forest.”

She liked Yulif who gave back what she had said. She liked him, who remembered all the gibberish she said. She liked it so much that she felt like she was about to cry.

‘I’m glad you’re alive. I’m glad you’re by my side.’ Canaren thought she felt like this more than a thousand times a day as she wrapped her arms around Yulif’s neck, and she rested her face against his chest.

“All right, let’s go. With you, I’m confident that I’ll be happy wherever it is.”

—Even if it’s hell with you.

Seeing Canaren’s dazzling smile, Yulif activated his magic. Canaren began to sing another song in a sweet voice.

The figure of the two people wrapped in the light disappeared, with the song remaining in the place for a very long time like the wind and scent.
