Side Story. Honeymoon

Space movement magic has always been a novelty and a surprise. When Canaren closed her eyes and opened them, the scenery around her changed instantly.

The familiar scent of greenery, grass, and trees in the forest rushed in. Canaren liked how Yulif didn’t release his hands from her waist even after the teleportation was over more than the fact that she had arrived at the town she missed. In the past, Yulif had either relentlessly pushed her away or moved away from her as soon as the space-shifting magic had ended.

At that time, Canaren thought that Yulif was savage. Now she knew why he did it all and how he felt about it.

Canaren hugged Yulif. Yulif looked at her with eyes full of tenderness and concern.

“Are you dizzy?”

“No, it’s just… I just like it.”

Instead of answering, Yulip left a short kiss on her lips. ‘Good. I love it. I really never imagined that the day would come when I could hug you for no reason and say, ‘I just like you.’’

Canaren leaned her cheek against Yulif’s shoulder and then released his arm. Then she crossed her arms as if to embrace him.

“Let’s go!”

The two of them walked side by side. Everything was different from the past days when they were chased by time, suffered from anxiety, and couldn’t let go of tension. Yulif held Canaren’s small hand firmly, as if to wrap it around, and kept her in his sight the whole time.

Canaren, who was chattering and telling him the names of all the grasses, trees, and flowers, noticed his gaze. Indeed, as soon as she raised her head, he was there as if it was natural for his purple eyes to be full of her. Laughter leaked out spontaneously. Yulif laughed along with her and tilted his head slightly.

“Why are you laughing?”

“I just like it! Why is Yulif laughing?”

“Like. I like it, too.”

Sweet. There was no sign of displeasure from Canaren’s delighted expression.

Before Canaren knew it, while exchanging glances and short conversations, she could see the entrance of the village. It was just before lunch, so there was nobody walking around. Instead, a cloud of white steam rose from the chimney on the roof.

Would her mother be home too? Canaren wondered if her mother was sitting all alone looking at an empty table, then she thought maybe her mother was about to start her meal and with that, her heart, filled with happiness, soared in excitement. Yulif, who had read Canaren’s expression, extended his stride and lightly pulled her hand.

“Should we hurry up a little?”

“Yes. Let’s go ahead and surprise Mother.”

“She will be surprised just by seeing us.”

The person who was supposed to die appeared alive and well.

‘I must keep it a secret from Canaren.’

Canaren would be very sad if she found out that Anera hid the fact that he was dying. Yulif did not want the mother-daughter relationship to deteriorate because of him. Of course, this was not going to shake things up like this, but Canaren and Anera had already gone through a lot of heartbreaking things. Canaren was suddenly taken and tortured both physically and mentally, and had to part ways with her mother without knowing why.

Who could comprehend a mother’s feelings of having to know her daughter’s whereabouts through someone else’s mouth?

But it’s all over. Deltinus, who tormented the mother and daughter, died, and Canaren became free from him. Thanks to her, he was able to survive and protect her from him. Yulif hoped that the future of the two who suffered the most would be filled with only happiness and joy. He felt sorry for Canaren, but for that, he thought it would be better to keep it a secret.

After passing through the village entrance, they walked a little further and Canaren saw Anera’s house. Canaren’s steps became brisk. Yulif strode along with Canaren, who was walking as she was running

「My goodness… I can’t believe it. How did this happen…」

「I can’t believe it either, Mom.」

Anera caressed Canaren’s cheek with her trembling hand. Canaren leaned her cheek against her hand and rubbed it slowly, acting childishly. Anera’s eyes were wet at the warm and soft touch.

She was surprised by the unexpected appearance of Canaren and Yulif for a brief moment, before feeling nothing but happiness. It was fortunate that Yulif was alive and Canaren was unharmed. She was really glad how it all turned out well.

「Still, we did it. Did I do well?」

「You did well. You did really well. long How can… you surprise your mother like this?」

Canaren’s brightly smiling face seemed to be telling her to calm down and that everything was fine. Anera finally wept as she looked at her daughter, who looked supremely happy. How many things must have happened and how painful it must have been before she could smile like that.

Anera felt sorry for Canaren and was sympathetic. She still remembered how she wandered around the village and the forest because she was curious about the little things. When did she grow up like this?

Although the start wasn’t good, Canaren managed to escape from her parents’ nest and build a nest on her own. ‘My daughter, you have grown wonderfully.’ Anera whispered softly and hugged Canaren tightly, then released it.

「I was just about to have lunch. Come on, sit down. The duke should sit too.」

「Yes. And please speak comfortably. I am Canaren’s husband.」

Yulif said politely. It was very believable to see him standing upright behind Canaren, whose face and the tips of her ears were blushing. Anera smiled softly and nodded.

The lunch prepared by Anera was modest. All she made was bread, a hot stew, and a salad made with herbs from the forest near the village. When they had lived together, they had a lot more food than this. Thinking that even that was a consideration for herself made Canaren’s heart warm and her eyes misty.

Canaren bit her lips to contain her crying. Anera, who misunderstood her appearance, smiled shyly, as if to hide her embarrassment.

「Eating alone has become a habit, so there is nothing set-up properly. Duke… Yulif is also here. I’m so sorry. What should I do? When are you both going back to the castle? Have dinner here before going back, and I will make a lot of delicious things for you.」

「If it’s okay with you, we’d like to stay in the village for a while.」

「Really? Is it ok to leave the castle empty? I had heard that something bad happened in the capital.」

「Yes. We had solved it all. I hope Canaren can rest comfortably in the village.」

「You are always welcome. Baby, did you hear that? Take a good rest right now. Umm… Canaren?」

「Heuk…」

Canaren was crying with her head bowed. Big drops of tears dripped down and wet her knees. Yulif, who was sitting next to her, gently grabbed her shoulder and patted her on the back, stroking her. The tears she had been holding back burst out by his gentle touch.

Canaren cried out loud like a child, leaning on Yulif, and as soon as Anera approached her side, she was embraced by Anera.

「Mom, I’m sorry. I’m sorry… I’m sorry for disappearing. Sorry for leaving you alone…」

「Why are you saying that? What a fool. As long as you’re safe, Mom is fine. I’m okay with being alone for the rest of my life. So don’t cry, baby. Not good.」

Anera gave Canaren a tight hug. The idea that she had grown up and flew away in search of her own nest might be a little early. To her, Canaren was always small and little, so precious that she was a child worth giving everything to.

Canaren spread her arms wide and embraced Anera, unwilling to let go of her mother’s warmth that she had barely regained. Another sort of warmth filled Yulif’s chest as he stared at the two of them without saying a word.

Yulif was sitting by the window, overlooking the village. In the distance, Canaren waved. She was surrounded by her friends who came to her upon hearing the news.

Yulif also raised and waved his hand. It was a bit awkward for him to do it as it was the first time, but he thought Canaren would like it. Not surprisingly, the faint laughter of Canaren and her friends carried in the wind.

“It’s nice to see you having fun. Both of you.”

“Is that so?”

“You don’t have to get up. Be comfortable.”

Anera set down a steaming cup in front of Yulif, and she took a proper seat. Yulif bowed his head in greeting and took a sip of the tea. It was a savory and heavy-tasting tea.

“I picked it because you didn’t seem to like sweets. How is it? Is it okay?”

“Delicious.”

Seeing how he replied right away, it seemed that he would eat even poison if given by her. Anera changed her mind when she was about to ask a cheeky question of if he liked her daughter that much. Besides that, there were so many things she wanted to ask and tell Yulif.

“Do you remember what I said when you first came to see me? I said I couldn’t see your future.”

“Yes. I remember.”

“At that time, I thought I couldn’t see it because there was not much time left. I was actually right, but even though it’s not the case anymore, I still can’t see your future.”

Yulif, who was looking down at the teacup, raised his eyes. Contrary to bringing up the serious topic about his lifespan, Anera’s expression was relaxed. Anera took a leisurely sip of tea.

“If it used to feel like your future was swallowed up in darkness, it’s different now. It seems to be enveloped in bright light. A brilliant light shining in gold.”

“It must be because of the golden bird from some legend.”

“Ah. Legends start with miracles that actually happen.”

There was no longer any concern in Anera’s voice, who answered bluntly.

Yulif stopped trying to explain in detail how he survived when he ran out of time and what happened to Canaren’s abilities. He didn’t have to explain it, but she said she knew, and she seemed to understand everything already.

“By the way, what are you going to do with your time? Canaren has friends, but this is a strange place for you.”

“I think it would be fun just looking at Canaren.”

“But wouldn’t it be boring if you stayed still for a few days?”

As long as Canaren was by his side, Yulif could just breathe. It was then that Anera flicked her finger to Yulif, who was about to say ‘It’s okay and thank you for being considerate.’

“Shall we take this opportunity to see your skills?”
