If…

If Lin Zhao Xi could had predicted that she would encounter such a bizarre incident when she took this step forward… (refers to her writing down e = mc2)

Then before this, she would definitely have had learnt by heart the jackpot lottery series of that year.

But she didn’t, after all no one would know that they would transmigrate before they actually did.

Yes, according to the wide-spread definition on the Internet, after having written down the equation, she returned to her 12-year-old time. (don’t try this at home kids)

She still maintained her posture of holding a chalk writing on the wall.

However, in front of her wasn’t the same wall, wasn’t the same gate, even the wild cat on the side road wasn’t the same one either.

Her surroundings had changed drastically.

Lin Zhao Xi took a step back, thoughtfully looked at her shorter, fatter, and darker-skinned arm. (author what the actual fork?)

“Goddamn it.” She cursed, attentively watched the wall, and turned silent.

It was a red-bricked wall, on the right was a huge iron gate.

And on the left was an old-colored rusty metal plate engraved the words “An Ning City’s Hope Project Funding Unit”.

She didn’t know what happened, so she sluggishly averted her eyes, then she saw even more plates.

There were a variety of plates, yellow ones, white ones; old ones, new ones.

There were plates written “Abcxyz University’s social practice base”, there were others written “Heart-to-heart mutual help pilot unit”. (I must confess, I MTL all these names on those plates because I don’t really understand.)

The last one was the biggest plate with black words on white background – “An Ning City’s Red Star Orphanage.”

There was something eccentric, even though it was nothing compared to being transmigrated – at that very glance, she clearly realized that she was herself, except she had returned to her primary 5th grade.

As if someone touched softly on her forehead, information gathered and became a part of her consciousness, she naturally received all of it.

She even clearly knew that, the orphanage behind this gate named Red Star, and it had been her home all these years until when she was 12.

She was left here since birth, she had no parents, and her personality was eccentric. Fortunately, she was not only quite good at studying, but the Head nurse of the orphanage also liked her and helped her attend an ordinary primary school.

Although her life path was completely different, but she was still the same Lin Zhao Xi.

Except this time, she did not only lack a mother, but she also didn’t have a father.

Too many drastic changes happened at a sudden, even if her mind was of an adult’s, she still felt the confusion and powerlessness she had never experienced.

Her legs turned wobbly, her heart beat fiercely fast, she couldn’t help but sit down on the steps at the entrance of the orphanage.

After having sat down and relaxed her mind, flashed through her mind was a quote to describe her current situation.

— each choice one made would create one different universe.

It is similar to when one was standing in a bakery, perplexed on whether to choose strawberry-flavored cake or cheese-flavored cake.

The old Lin Zhao Xi was living in the strawberry-option universe, and obviously, the universe this Lin Zhao Xi was living in was cheese-option.

God knew which option went wrong, in cheese-flavored universe, she and Mr. Lin had never been father and daughter, completely different to the timeline in which the two of them lived together and relied on each other since she was small.

In other words, she came to a parallel universe, in this universe, for some reasons Mr. Lin didn’t raise her, she became an orphan.

To confirm this was also extremely simple.

Lin Zhao Xi stood up, searched for a silver-white plate with a good reflection among those in the orphanage gate, and she took a look.

Yeah…

Round face, big eyes, big ears, round nose…

Identical to her younger self.

It was almost mid-summer; the weather was hot and uneasy.

After having confirmed she was still herself, Lin Zhao Xi felt a bit relaxed. She licked her lips, leaned back and carefully examined her memories in this universe.

The very next second, her bag heavily knocked the steps, her pencil case and her cup felt down and made a loud bang.

She was terrified, and quickly loosened the straps and placed the bag on her chest for fear of breaking something.

Lin Zhao Xi was stunned.

This wasn’t her; this series of actions was little Lin Zhao Xi’s instinctive reaction.

She wasn’t allowed to break things, even the ordinary schoolbag or cup were valuable, she couldn’t afford another one.

Lin Zhao Xi held her straps and took another look.

The bag was washed too many times that its color had faded to white, and the easily broken parts of the straps were pinned by the skillful patch of stitches.

After that she realized, her description was wrong; for her, this universe had nothing to do with the goodness of cheese, from the beginning to the end it was bitter with hardships and sufferings.

Like all other orphans in the world, her biggest wish was that her parents could come to pick her up.

It had been 12 years; but her parents had never showed up.

In this universe, she was a fierce girl, at school she opposed to her teachers, after school she opposed to her classmates, no one could make her give in. Her most recent deed was to put her Head teacher’s son on the floor to hit him.

It was mid-noon, she returned home for lunch, her Head teacher told her to bring her guardian to school in the afternoon. But she didn’t dare to let the Head nurse know, she could only stand hesitantly in front of the orphanage gate.

At that moment, the image must have been purely simple.

This universe self of hers took a step back from the orphanage gate, while the other universe self of hers took a step forward to her house gate.

One step difference, 5th grader Lin Zhao Xi was replaced by 22-year-old Lin Zhao Xi.

At the moment, this new 5th grader Lin Zhao Xi would be neither eccentric out of lack of love, nor anxious or miserable for fear of being scolded by the Head nurse.

But then another emotion came pouring in.

She looked up, yet she could only see a streak of the sky through the eaves.

Mr. Lin, where are you?

Without me, would your life still become a mess this time?

Lin Zhao Xi had been thinking for a while.

Eventually, she dusted herself and stood up from the orphanage gate. After all, she had arrived here, so she still wanted to search for Mr. Lin.

Having left the small alley, in front of her was the scenery of the city.

At that time, An Ning city hadn’t experienced large-scaled constructions. Houses and buildings were small and short, shops and stores were crowded, there was fried chicken store, noodle store, clothing shop… Waiters wearing aprons went back and forth, the storekeeper old man used the feather duster to sweep the shelves. Even though the scene didn’t have the light and beauty in more modern times, it was unexplainably cozy and hospitable.

Lin Zhao Xi walked on the road and watched her surroundings.

Having lived in An Ning city for so many years, of course she had heard of Red Star orphanage, but she only vaguely knew where exactly it was.

In the air came a familiar scent, she walked a few steps faster, and found a grilled squid stall; thanks to this, her vague memories started to get clearer. Ah, Red Star orphanage wasn’t far from her and Mr. Lin’s old resident. She didn’t need to walk through the entire city.

The grilled squid squall hung a large banner, on it were three words “Chen Da Yan”; in the future, An Ning TV station would make a cooking show and call storekeeper Chen ‘God of squids’. (what a title)

However, at that time, primary students only got 1 dime per time they helped with the housework, so that 5 dollars for 3 strings of grilled squid wasn’t cheap.

The stall was surrounded with students, Lin Zhao Xi also stood near it to see.

There was a child who seemed to come for the first time, he was holding his grandmother’s hand.

The storekeeper asked what kind of sauce they wanted, the grandmother unhesitantly said they didn’t need the sauce as the child couldn’t eat anything spicy.

Lin Zhao Xi looked at those three cups of sauce that were later highly praised by the media, caught the child’s clothes, whispered: “The sweet sauce was delicious, you should try it.”

The grandmother stared at her, received the squid strings, and pulled the child’s hand to leave.

The child went along, yet he still turned his head and wishfully looked at the stall.

Lin Zhao Xi pointed at the sweet sauce and exaggeratingly lip-synced “It’s really delicious!”

The storekeeper laughed; he must have felt really satisfied that he held a string of grilled squid to give her.

“There’s no need! Next time I’d bring my father to buy it for me!” Lin Zhao Xi waved goodbye to the storekeeper, brought her bag and continued moving forward.

At the end of the road is another road.

Near Red Star orphanage was 2 primary schools, those children who returned home for lunch were starting to go back to school.

Everywhere on the road were primary students wearing different colored uniforms.

The majority of children had their parents to take them home and send them back to school.

Lin Zhao Xi was all alone; the more she walked, the lonelier she felt.

But the reason why she felt lonely wasn’t Mr. Lin. It was when she came by the familiar magazine stores or snacks stores, she felt cheese universe’s little Lin Zhao Xi’s lonely emotions.

Everyday after class, lonesome Lin Zhao Xi would think of her parents whom she never met; she hoped there would be someone who could hold her hands and buy her the pens and notebooks that she had desired for a long time.

She would call that person dad or mom, she would be spoiled by them, she would also take good care of them.

Her wish was so simple, Lin Zhao Xi couldn’t help getting teary.

She rubbed her nose: You were so easy to please, little girl.
