hapter 30 – The Open Gate

“LowLow ReactionZo
” (Shinjō)

Open Door: one of the simplest and most basic magics that was joined together by only two characters.
It launched reaction stones from a long distance, opening the door. That was all it did.

It wasn’t exactly the strongest magic that separated life and death in Genocide Reality, but it might have been the most basic magic that could be used when everyone was caught unaware.

“LowLow Radiatefuu Hindrancegol Creationneta” (Shinjō)

I thought it wouldn’t close the door in time, so I made a transparent wall in front of it.
Middle level did not have a 100% success rate. So low level.

All right, even at low level it can withstand two hits.
As I expected, two death black swords pierced the wall I made.

Only two of them could attack at once.
So in the second attack, I could put up another the second they broke my first low level wall magic.

But my expectation was off.
The transparent walls were pierced by four swords, not two!

“LowLow Radiatefuu Hindrancegol Creationneta” (Shinjō)

By the time I made a replacement for the now-vanished wall, it was too late. Two of them leaped forward in a front flip as though they were shoved.
No one could react.

Geno-Real’s common sense was already long gone.
The two in front had crouched while pushing up, creating a gap for the two behind to leap forward.

As a result: four simultaneous attacks.
Our defensive line crumbled, something that we could never let crumble.

“RUUUNNN!!”

I didn’t even have to shout; everyone knew.
And, the shout someone cried out was way too late.

Fortune and misfortune.
The fortune was that Ussah dealt with the Black Death Knight that happened to be in front of her.

Ussah jumped and dodged the Black Death Knight’s quick side slash.
But that wasn’t all; she parried with a front kick.

Naturally, her movement wasn’t enough, and after its acrobatic landing the Black Death Knight released an easy side swipe that was most likely to hit with no motion.
The kick Ussah fired after she barely dodged that flash was the Rabbit-Style Dust Leg. It was a mystery of warfare passed down to Ussah’s clan.

The misfortune was that the one of the Athletic Corps was corrosponding to another Black Death Knight.
Proudly preparing to use his steel longsword and buckler, he—had his buckler split in two.

I wasn’t seeing things; it was split in two.
The black death sword, swung directly downward with the momentum of a front flip behind it, easily cut through his iron-made buckler, his longsword, and his proud smiling face, bisecting him down to his crotch without resistance.

I guess the fortune within the misfortune was that he probably died without feeling any pain.
That slash was so fast that he didn’t even feel like he died.

“Wataru-kun!” (Kumiko)

Kumiko cried out, and did the next wall spell herself.
Hearing that voice, I made my decision and slashed at the Black Death Knight that had bisected the swordsman in a single stroke.

Run away everyone, run away.
We could only run away.

And those that could fight for time could only earn as much as they could.
If I took up my sword, one life was saved.

“UOOOOOOOHH!!” (Shinjō)

Aiming at the Black Death Knight that swung down its black death sword, I swung『Solitude』with a cry of fighting spirit.
The Black Death Knight collapsed with a *clang* from the swing I put all my weight and power into.

I kicked the body of the fallen Black Death Knight and jumped forward.
I’d die if I stopped; that cold premonition ran through my body.

As I jumped towards the enemy, preparing to use『Soltitude』whose grip I was holding, I realized my death premonition was correct, but I didn’t have the time to enjoy it.
My surroundings were already a sea of blood.

A column of blood spouted with a momentary delay from the body of the swordsman that had just been bisected by the Black Death Knight.
The Black Death Knight that tried attacking me from behind was kicked again and launched by Ussah.

But, the enemies’ attack didn’t end at two.
Despite the wall spell Kumiko cast being middle level, the wall disappeared from four thrusts at the same time, and another front flipped into the large room.

Kumiko tried to chant another, but even for Kumiko the success rate of a middle level wall wasn’t 100%.
The instant she failed, all six Black Death Knights would enter the room.

The moment that happened, we all died. We had to withdraw before that.
I was prepared to cut down everything to save myself. Those who were one step late in running away, and those who fought against the enemies with a stupid high difference in ability.

Were they a man or woman?
Was the reason influenced by good or evil?

All of them had no right to live.
You had no right to live in Genocide Reality.

“UOOOOOHHH!!” (Shinjō)

If unable to escape, I would cut down Shuichi Nanami, or even Kumiko Kujo or Ussah.
But please, please let me hold on for at least one more swing.

『Solitude』could only be called a desperate effort now, but please give me more speed and power!
With feelings of prayer, I brandished my sword and swung down at the Black Death Knight.

Faster, faster, just one more slash.
As if digging, this time strike with the isolated blade that cuts through all of the universe!

With my slash, I severed the head of the Black Death Knight in front of me and it crumbled down with a *clang*.
A miracle didn’t happen from a prayer. I just happened to land a critical blow on a weakened enemy.

Ah, yeah, reality was always cruel.
Kumiko; Ussah; Shuichi Nanami; Mikami Naotsugu; even the men in the Athlete Corps whose names I hadn’t even heard—all of them were fighting.

Two—no, three were dead now!

Why aren’t you running.
Even though you’ll all die, you’ll all die dammit! You should know that, so why aren’t you running!

“DAMN ITTT!” (Shinjō)

Only one more slash, only one more slash, I’ll go along with this death game.
My『Solitude』was of different quality than your weapons. If I could get a critical hit, then the Black Death Knights would!!

“KYAAAAAAAAHHH”

That moment, maybe she just couldn’t endure it, or maybe she’d been trying to run away from the start and just hadn’t been able to.
Hotaru Kurokawa raised a scream as though she’d gone mad and ran out of the room, her pretty curly hair shaking as she did.

Lured by Kurokawa running away, the Nanami Girls also ran for it.
Every one of them ran to the back, to the safety room, all while raising high-pitched screams.

Well, I guess they were girls.
The moment I thought there was value in them dying if someone was saved, a miracle happened.

A miracle…it’s a miracle, a godsend!
A certain miracle!

Three Black Death Knights chased after Kurokawa and them into the back room, as if invited by their panicked running.
What’s more, they hadn’t shut the gate.

Those idiots. Though, it wasn’t like they’d be stoped even if they had calmly pressed the button to the gate.
Not a single one of the five had shut the gate, as though they were trying to be a decoy. The five girls vanished into the darkness like they were sucked into it…along with three Black Death Knights.

“UHAHAHAHA!!” (Shinjō)

I shouldn’t laugh. If this was the ‘Don’t Laugh’ Series, then I was about to be hit by the Butt Bat.¹
What a terrible guy I was. They might have become decoys at the cost of their lives.

But that didn’t matter. Two remained. If we surrounded them, this was an easy victory!
I didn’t even have to tell the remaining warriors this.

I swung two slashes into a Black Death Knight one after another, destroying it.
In the meantime, Ussah, Kumiko, Nanami, and Mikami sent out attack after attack, crushing the other.

Heehh, I wanted to kill them all, but looks like you guys can do it, too.
When I tried to voice that, Nanami tried to jump into the back room, so I stopped him in a panic.

“HEY, WAIIT! Pull them to in front of the door and guarantee the kill!” (Shinjō)

“But we have to help Hotaru Kurokawa-kun and them!” (Nanami)

They’re a lost cause, of course.
I was about to say that, but I was still in the midst of the campaign period ‘to make a good impression on Nanami’.

“Think about why they became sacrifices!” (Shinjō)

“No…why are you……” (Nanami)

It was a painful reason even for me, but I wasn’t going to lie now. It was possible they meant to become decoys when they charged into the back room whilst screaming.
That possibility was indicated as zero percent, but decimal points were rounded down in this game, so it actually did exist in a decimal point possibility.

I mean, that was hardly the reason why they did, but I needed an excuse.
Though he confronted everyone to try to fight, no one other than Shuichi Nanami wanted to try and help Kurokawa and them just because they were powerless girls.

“Nanami, we are to follow Shinjō’s instructions, remember?” (Mikami)

“That’s true……” (Nanami)

In return to Mikami’s nonchalant proposal, Shuichi Nanami finally abandoned them as well.
“They purposefully became decoys”, I bet not a single person believed my words that I myself didn’t believe.

Whatever, I don’t mind playing the villain.
It was my fault we abandoned them.

“But, I wonder how far they pulled them.” (Shinjō)

I peeked in through the door in the back room, but nothing came of it since it was too dark.
If they really became decoys and dashed with all their might and got away by falling into the pitfalls or something, then I guess I could help them.

I didn’t care for them, but not so much as to actively wish for their deaths.
But, I couldn’t imagine anyone was saved.

“Shinjō-kun, get over here!” (Kumiko)

Possibily using what she’d picked up, Kumiko threw kunai at the three approaching Black Death Knights. They were covered in blood, though no one knew whose it was.
I pressed the button in a timely manner, striking the heads of two with the lowering gate. Unlike before, the ones in front were crouching, but the back one wasn’t leaping forward.

Probably because if it did that, Ussah and them behind me would beat it senseless.
Eventually, after I killed one by using the ‘fucking gate’, I began pulling the other two and killed the remaining injured one in one stroke. The leftover one was beat senseless by Nanami and them before being killed.

I felt that not only I but also Ussah, Kumiko, and Nanami’s group had gotten far stronger than we were before.
Did our ranks grow from the life or death struggle? Maybe that wasn’t the only great thing; we had gone through a scene of carnage and come out on top.

One second of a life or death struggle was better than one day of training.
As I had killed Black Death Knights, I was confident I wouldn’t lose to an enemy below it.

Just to be sure, we searched the back room to see if Kurokawa’s group lived or not, but they were annihilated just like I thought they’d be.
Their bodies had been bisected in the order they neatly ran away in. There was a girl bisected vertically and a girl bisected horizontally, but on the brink of death horizontal was better as at least their faces remained beautiful.

Even if their head and heart were left untouched, humans would die before long if they were bisected from their torso.
I wonder why. Was the cause of death from shock, or the large amount of bleeding?

I could see her spine, and her liver and several other organs I wasn’t too familiar with were spilling out from the clean sever. Even though I was alive, it frightened me.
Hotaru Kurokawa appeared to be the only one who had held out for the longest in running away; she had succeeded in running away to another room in the back.

So this was why they took so long to come.
With no time to use light magic, I imagine she was unable directly resist, but she had sank into a pool of blood, still holding her steel shortsword.

Contrary to expectations, her corpse was beautiful. Her face was pretty, but her pupils were wide open and she had a terrible look on her face. I felt like I might scream again soon. Naturally, she had no breath.
Her cause of death was a slash across the chest by a black death sword.

Nanami and them appeared to want to mourn them and carry their corpses to the town above if possible, but naturally that wasn’t looking possible.
I didn’t know what to do.

Back then, had I not stopped Nanami and went to help, only Kurokawa might’ve been saved.
Of course, I’d be troubled if Shuichi Nanami went to help Kurokawa, who already had little chance of being saved, and died, so I thought there to be no error in my judgement.

That’s what I thought, but I didn’t want to see Kurokawa’s face if she thought she had a chance of being saved.

Returning to the original room, we went to look at the Athletic Corps’ corpses.
There were three dead bodies laying down; one was the swordsman who’d been split in two, and another seemingly hadn’t had time to defend against the attacking Black Death Knight; the middle of their body was hacked to pieces, their limbs cut apart from the middle.

Sadly, this death was probably the most painful.
Compared to that, the last corpse was lucky.

“Akira Kizaki……” (Shinjō)

She was dead, her steel chestplate deeply cracked. With machine-like accuracy, it had thrusted into her heart just like Kurokawa.
The Black Death Knight had behaved skillfully within that melee.

If it was by way of death, then Kazaki’s corpse was beautiful.

At a time like this, maybe a man thinking “Akira actually had a chest!?” after seeing the red-stained bulge couldn’t be helped.
I felt so disgusted I wanted to cry at the low-life in me.

Akira Kizaki had said she’d help me if I fucked up.
I knew it was disgusting. But, I couldn’t help but think exactly that.

“Damn it all……” (Shinjō)

I didn’t memorize people’s names. What’s more, the aftertaste left behind from someone you conversed with more or less dying under your responsibility, was too terrible.
Shuichi Nanami, the leader of the Student Council, remembered everyone’s names and kept fighting with these feelings.

No matter how much lip service his words were, I thought Nanami was really a great guy.
I definitely couldn’t bear it.

There might not have been anything I could do, but I’m sorry.
This was why I’d rather be alone.

The moment I thought so and tried to close Akira’s eyelids, my eyes opened wide and goosebumps covered my body.

“Cough……”

Akira Kizaki vomited blood from her mouth.
No way, she’s started breathing again?

“Hey, Kizaki! Akira Kizaki! Hang in there!” (Shinjō)

Even though her chest had been pierced by a large sword with such force that her heart ceased to function, could it possibly restart? Her breaths had stopped some time ago, hadn’t it?
While I panicked and she spat out the blood in her mouth, I felt her faint though weak breaths.

“Gahh……” (Akira)

She coughed again. Potion…I need a recovery potion.
Frustrated, I searched my rucksack.

“Drink. Kizaki, hey, hang in there. Drink this.” (Shinjō)

I pushed the bottle of the blue recovery potion into her mouth, but it just collected and she didn’t swallow.
Damn it, won’t she die anyway at this rate?

Though I thought it might be pointless, I couldn’t afford to not do it.
I put the recovery potion in my mouth and fed her mouth-to-mouth.

It was my first time doing this so I couldn’t do it well, but I managed to push it into her mouth.
Her throat gulped slightly.

Do it again. Would a potion work if it mistakenly went into her lungs?
I didn’t know. What was I, a knowledge cheat? There were many things I didn’t know.

Would it have been better to do this with CPR steps?
I didn’t know how, so it made no difference. I should learn that.

“Haah, I’m begging you, please drink……” (Shinjō)

When I looked around no one was there. Damn it, where were they at a time like this?
I had to do it. I felt like her chest wounds were closing little by little every time I fed her the recovery potion via mouth-to-mouth.

『HighHigh HealthRis』

I made several high level potions and kept feeding them to her via mouth-to-mouth
That was all I could do.
