Greed (3)

Xu Pinyu’s skin was as fair as an endless snowfield.

She blinked, and her pupils had a color of a smoldering twilight.

Xu Pinyu tilted her head and asked, “Uncle, do you have business with the Student Council?”

He paused for a moment and asked in return, “Are you part of the Student Council?”

Xu Pinyu shook her head. “I’m not.”

But then she smiled softly and lowered her voice, saying, “But my boyfriend is.”

Shen Wensong raised an eyebrow. “Boyfriend?”

At that moment, Xu Pinyu faintly heard footsteps approaching, so she turned her head to look. “Ah, he should be coming down now.”

Following her gaze, Shen Wensong looked towards the stairs. Upon seeing the appearance of the person coming down, he let out an inquisitive sound, “Oh?”

She watched as Shen Youbai appeared, but as his eyes swept past them, his long legs suddenly froze.

His gaze lingered behind Xu Pinyu, on the tall, well-dressed middle-aged man.

Shen Youbai composed himself, holding her bag in his hand as he walked down the stairs.

He stood in front of Shen Wensong and asked, “Why are you here?”

Xu Pinyu was momentarily stunned, realizing that they seemed to know each other.

Seemingly aware that she was about to speak, Shen Youbai turned his gaze towards her and answered, “He’s my dad.”

Xu Pinyu was taken aback and blurted out, “Dad?”

“Yes,” Shen Wensong seemed to be responding to her, with a deep tone that carried a hint of amusement.

She stared at Shen Wensong in shock, unable to believe that the man in front of her was already of age. Despite showing signs of aging, his distinct features indeed resembled Shen Youbai.

Xu Pinyu quickly and nervously said, “Uncle, I was just joking with you earlier.”

Shen Youbai furrowed his brow, showing doubt towards the second half of her sentence.

Shen Wensong smiled and turned to leave, saying, “I’ll see you off…”

“No need,” Shen Youbai quickly interjected.

In front of Shen Wensong, he took Xu Pinyu’s slender hand and said, “I’ll take her home first. You can wait for me at home.”

After Shen Youbai led the somewhat dazed girl away, Shen Wensong watched their retreating figures and let out a helpless chuckle.

He had been waiting at home for half a day without seeing anyone, which led him to come here.

Under the chilly black night sky, the city lights appeared desolate.

Shen Youbai entered the house, his gaze falling on a pair of well-crafted leather shoes placed at the foyer.

The surface of the shoes was spotless.

The living room was brightly lit.

Shen Wensong sat on the sofa with his legs crossed, flipping through the newspaper with a rustling sound. There was a sense of stability and weightiness in his demeanor, lacking the carefree and unrestrained feeling of years past.

The sound of metal touching glass resonated as Shen Youbai tossed the keys onto the coffee table.

Shen Wensong folded the newspaper, then stacked it neatly beside him and calmly said, “Your girlfriend is very cute.”

He didn’t expect him to say those words.

Shen Youbai paused for a moment, then asked after sitting down, “What’s the matter?”

His tone was calm, but it only accentuated the distance between them.

Shen Wensong, facing his son speaking to him in such a manner, didn’t show any particular distress. Perhaps he had long been accustomed to the atmosphere between them.

When did it start that even the little remaining affection had been worn away?

He took out a stack of documents and placed them on the table, pressing a pen onto the paper.

Pushing them towards Shen Youbai, he said, “I’ve arranged a personal equity certificate for you, along with a stock investment contract. Please sign it.”

Shen Youbai looked at him, hesitating for a few seconds before picking up the pen.

As he saw the inked tip gliding across the paper, Shen Wensong thought of something. He took out a business card from the inner pocket of his coat and handed it over.

He told Shen Youbai, “When you decide to manage these assets on your own, find this person.”

It was an unfamiliar name, with the word ‘lawyer’ written next to it.

Shen Youbai glanced at the business card, then capped the pen and pushed the documents back.

There were no further words exchanged.

After collecting the documents, Shen Wensong glanced at Shen Youbai’s consistently aloof expression and didn’t intend to linger any longer.

As he reached the foyer, his hand, marked by wind and frost, grasped the doorknob. “Oh, and…”

Shen Wensong turned back, attempting to soften his tone. “I have something to do this weekend, so I wanted to tell you in advance. Happy birthday.”

After the door closed, Shen Youbai stood at the foyer, lost in thought.

After a while, he turned off the lights, enveloping the room in the darkness resembling a black sky.

In the quiet emptiness of the room, a faint hiss and a dim flicker of firelight cast fleeting shadows on his silhouette.

Soon, there was only a flicker of sparks and the thin, nearly transparent smoke.

Shen Wensong handed the documents to his assistant, who was waiting by the car.

Before getting into the car, he turned his head and glanced at the house from afar. Letting out a deep sigh, he bent down and entered the car.

Originally, this share transfer document was meant to be a birthday gift for Shen Youbai, but he couldn’t bring himself to say it.

On Saturday morning, sunlight streamed through the bathroom window.

He cupped his palms to catch the water flow, letting it slip through his fingers.

After finishing his morning routine, Shen Youbai walked out of the bathroom and heard the doorbell ringing incessantly, with an impatient frequency.

He furrowed his brow slightly and went to open the door.

As a group of people shouted, “Surprise!” at him, Shen Youbai’s expression showed a hint of disdain.

However, no one paid attention to his mood. They each held their drinks and beverages and unceremoniously squeezed into his house.

Shen Youbai saw the person who came last and reached out to take the cake box she was carrying.

Xu Pinyu smiled and said, “Yesterday, Zhou Qishan suggested having a party at your place.”

He pursed his lips, his expression far from joyful.

Twenty minutes later.

Xu Pinyu witnessed the once clean living room becoming a mess, creating a nightclub atmosphere in broad daylight. She now understood the meaning behind Shen Youbai’s head-shaking at the door.

Chen Zixuan, who had claimed not to be familiar with Shen Youbai and felt embarrassed about coming to his birthday party, was now happily bouncing on the sofa, holding a bottle of alcohol.

The music was so loud that the floor was shaking.

She approached Shen Youbai and asked loudly, “Will the neighbors complain?”

Then, she felt a tightening around her waist as he grabbed her, and she threw herself onto him.

Shen Youbai turned his head slightly, his ear close to her. “I can’t hear what you’re saying.”

Looking at his slender ear and the smooth line of his nose, Xu Pinyu was momentarily stunned.

She tiptoed and whispered into Shen Youbai’s ear, “Did you change the bedsheets? I want to lie down for a bit.”
