Running Aground (1)

Xu Pinyu was being held by him, but she still wanted to pry open his arms.

However, she couldn’t muster any strength as she laughed and struggled, her futile resistance resembling playful teasing.

Zhou Qishan’s voice suddenly interrupted them, putting a halt to their actions. “Youbai…”

They stopped moving, and Xu Pinyu turned her head in confusion.

“Auntie is here,” Zhou Qishan continued.

Before his words could fully sink in, a woman walked in.

She was wearing a dark brown coat, her eyes long and alluring, with jade green earrings dangling from her earlobes.

The lighting was dim, not bright enough, but she could see her son and a girl in an intimate position. She was simply curious about what kind of person could capture Shen Youbai’s attention. Other than that, she didn’t have any other thoughts.

However, in the next second, Zhou Qishan turned on the kitchen lights.

Her gaze fell back onto Xu Pinyu’s face and she couldn’t help but stare for a moment.

At that moment, Xu Pinyu was still momentarily lost in her thoughts, wondering the title Zhou Qishan used to address the woman in front of her.

When she realized what was happening, she quickly broke free from Shen Youbai’s embrace and greeted shyly, “Hello, Auntie.”

Seeing Jian Yue staring at her intently, with a hint of disbelief in her expression, Xu Pinyu felt a bit flustered. She obediently introduced herself, “My name is Xu Pinyu.”

Equally perplexed by his mother’s reaction, Shen Youbai furrowed his brow slightly.

He grabbed Xu Pinyu’s hand, about to say something.

Jian Yue had already composed herself from her previous expression, her rouge-colored lips curved into an elegant smile as greeted Xu Pinyu, “Hello.”

However, the slightly unnatural curve of her lips revealed hidden thoughts.

Jian Yue looked at the people who became somewhat awkward upon her arrival and said, “Don’t just stand there like fools, go and have fun, don’t mind me.”

She turned her gaze, pausing for a moment on Shen Youbai holding Xu Pinyu’s hand before subtly shifting her attention away.

Jian Yue said to him, “Youbai, come here.”

Before Shen Youbai followed her out, she smiled gently at Xu Pinyu.

But Xu Pinyu couldn’t quite describe the strange feeling she had towards that smile.

Jian Yue walked into the study and casually turned on a desk lamp.

The dim yellow light cast a glow on her figure as she stood by the window.

Outside, the streets were silent, and heavy clouds obscured the moon.

Her exhaled breath fogged up the glass.

Jian Yue closed her eyes, as if brought back to the day she saw Chen Qiuya after many years.

Shen Wensong had been searching for her all these years.

However, consumed by extinguished passion, what remained was the unwillingness to give up, but it was not enough for him to realize that Jian Yue had long since bribed the people investigating for him.

When she held the address in her hand and found the flower shop, she was stunned for a long time.

She couldn’t believe that the person Shen Wensong had desperately searched for was not far away but right in front of him. In the same city, yet separated like two different worlds.

The wind chimes tinkled for a while, and Jian Yue set down the two boxes of bird’s nest in her hand, turning her head to see the woman walking out from behind the flower wall.

She still gave Jian Yue the feeling of a delicate gardenia flower in a bottle.

After Chen Qiuya expressed her surprise, as if she had expected this day would come, she indifferently approached Jian Yue.

Jian Yue suddenly felt guilty and looked around, taking down a photo frame from the shelf. With a somewhat awkward smile, she asked, “Is this… your daughter?”

In the investigation photos that Jian Yue had seen, this girl had appeared frequently.

Chen Qiuya looked at her and nodded.

Jian Yue’s expression changed in an instant. She put down the photo frame and lowered her gaze, saying, “She’s really beautiful.”

After a brief silence, Jian Yue looked up at Chen Qiuya and said, “I’m sorry for the past. Although I know that saying sorry can’t make up for anything.”

Chen Qiuya waved her hand to interrupt her and shook her head.

Jian Yue watched as she walked behind the desk, took out paper and a pen, and quickly wrote a message, then handed it over.

The elegant handwriting carried a firmness in every stroke–

‘Since the day I decided to stay here, I have already let go. I don’t resent you, and I don’t love him either.

If you still feel guilty towards me, please don’t tell him about my existence. Don’t disturb my life.

In the future, I don’t want to have any connection with you.’

Fate was something that Jian Yue used to dismiss.

But when she saw Shen Youbai’s gentle fingers entwined in a girl’s hair, she couldn’t help but feel fear.

Jian Yue opened her eyes, and the white mist on the window glass was quickly dissipating.

She heard the sound of the door closing, so she turned around and said to him, “You and Xu Pinyu…”

She paused and asked, “You haven’t crossed any boundaries, right?”

Shen Youbai furrowed his brow, but before he could respond, she said, “I hope not.”

He didn’t understand Jian Yue’s meaning, but Jian Yue was, after all, his mother and understood every subtle change in his expression.

So, she sighed and said, “You can’t be together.”

There was no immediate sign of him getting angry and arguing with her. Shen Youbai had a calmness that surpassed his peers, perhaps due to the environment he grew up in forcing him to suppress his emotions.

He simply asked, “Why not?”

Jian Yue looked at his cold and distant gaze, so similar to Shen Wensong, and it sometimes made her panic.

She deliberately avoided the key point and said, “There are many beautiful girls, among them are those with good family backgrounds who can match the Shen family…”

Listening to these words, Shen Youbai raised an eyebrow slightly and decisively turned to leave the study.

Just as he was about to reach for the door handle, Jian Yue directly said, “What if she’s your sister!”

Shen Youbai’s hand paused, slowly turned back, and a faintly ridiculous curve formed at the corner of his mouth.

He coldly scoffed, “Absurd.”

Jian Yue also hoped that this was an absurd lie. “Xu Pinyu’s mother is the woman Shen Wensong loved back then.”

She said, “Do you know why I wanted to harm her? It’s because she was pregnant at that time.”

Shen Youbai was stunned.

She continued, “And I was carrying you, six months old in my belly. I believe Shen Wensong is capable of doing anything for her. So I was afraid and told your grandfather about this.”

Thinking of his grandfather, Jian Yue sarcastically laughed, “You must understand it well too, your grandfather… He can’t tolerate even a grain of sand.”

Shen Youbai’s expression gradually dimmed.

She honestly said, “All I know is that she became mute and left. I don’t know if her child survived, and I dare not guess or reminisce.”

Jian Yue shook her head self-deprecatingly. “Perhaps it’s karma. When I gave birth to you, I almost had a difficult delivery.”

The lingering sound of her words faded away, leaving a silent stillness.

She looked up, unable to see the expression on Shen Youbai’s face as his hair fell in front of his forehead.

Jian Yue turned her head away, not looking at him. “Regardless of whether or not Xu Pinyu is Shen family’s child, once Shen Wensong finds out…”

She couldn’t imagine what would happen.

She closed her eyes deeply. “So please understand me, and also think about your own situation. Don’t get involved with her anymore, and things will be much simpler.”

After speaking, Jian Yue adjusted her coat on her shoulders and walked past him in high heels, then stopped.

She chuckled softly. “It seems like I always tell you these things on your birthday. I really am an incompetent mother.”

As Jian Yue walked out of the study, he was still standing there, motionless except for his breathing.

Xu Pinyu sat in the living room, feeling dazed. When she saw Jian Yue, she quickly stood up, but Shen Youbai was nowhere to be seen.

Jian Yue gave her a slight smile and then hurriedly left, looking somewhat flustered.

That smile was very complex, as if it contained a multitude of emotions, ones that Xu Pinyu couldn’t quite grasp.

Zhou Qishan patted Qin Ran, who was playing with a bottle of alcohol, and said, “Let’s go, everyone should go home and get some rest.”

He then asked Xu Pinyu, “What about you?”

“I…” She began to answer.

Zhou Qishan interrupted with a meaningful smile, “Ah, I know.”

As Xu Pinyu said goodbye to them at the door, there was a sudden sound of shattering, startling her.

Then came a series of clattering noises, as if someone was demolishing the house, and the source of the sound seemed to be the study.

Zhou Qishan was also stunned for a moment, then said to her, “Be careful.”

Xu Pinyu stood at the door of the study, and it had been quiet inside for a while.

She opened the door, allowing light to sweep into the dark room.

The place was a mess, causing Xu Pinyu to gasp. As she walked further in, she accidentally kicked the remaining lamp post of a table lamp.

Shen Youbai was slumped half-laying on the sofa, holding a lighter in his hand, flicking it on and off.

It was only when Xu Pinyu approached closer that she could see clearly. He tilted his head back, his fair neck exposed, his gaze fixed on the ceiling, and his pupils deep and unfathomable.

Suddenly, she noticed the sound of wind outside, accompanied by the sound of rain.

For some reason, she felt a shiver run down her spine.

Xu Pinyu hesitated for a moment before tentatively speaking in a soft voice, “They’ve all left.”

His eyelids twitched, but there was no response.

He seemed like a person living within a painting.

Worried, Xu Pinyu asked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Finally, he closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and said, “It’s late, you should go back first.”

She stood there in a daze for a moment, instinctively looking outside the window.

The night was pitch black, with countless raindrops falling vertically.

She spoke softly, “Lend me an umbrella.”

As if awakening, Shen Youbai rubbed his temples, stood up, and said, “I’ll take you back.”

Without looking at him, Xu Pinyu felt a growing sense of grievance. She walked straight towards the slightly ajar door, but stopped in her tracks.

Suddenly, she turned around and looked at Shen Youbai, saying, “Is it because Auntie doesn’t approve of us being together that you’re in a difficult position?”

His expression faltered for a moment, confirming that Xu Pinyu’s guess was correct.

Xu Pinyu pretended to not care. “It’s okay, as long as you say ‘yes’.”

She asserted, “I promise, I won’t bother you anymore.”

She thought that Shen Youbai would never let her go anyway.

He looked at Xu Pinyu and said, “Yes.”

Her mouth opened in bewilderment, feeling as if her chest had been pierced, with cold wind pouring in, causing a painful ache.

Her throat felt dry, and Xu Pinyu pursed her lips together. “Well, no need to accompany me.”

Heat surged in her eyes, and she hurriedly lowered her head, her voice trembling slightly. “Happy birthday, goodbye.”

Before the words even finished, she wanted to run away immediately.

Never before had there been a moment when she was so eager to escape from his side.

But just as she turned around, a hand passed by her face and slammed against the door with a loud bang, startling her and causing a few tears to fall.

The light that had leaked in from outside was completely shut off, and she faced the pitch-black door.

“I am indeed in a difficult position, but if you want to draw a clear line between us,” Shen Youbai leaned down, his deep voice coming from behind her head, reaching her ear.

He said, “I also promise, I will completely destroy you.”
