Running Aground (4)

The green light lit up, but there was no constant stream of people, not even a passing car.

The quiet road allowed the sounds of construction of a building to be heard.

Soft music played from the speakers, and nearby, a couple cuddled together, sharing news on their phone screens.

It was during school hours, yet there was a girl in a school uniform sitting in the coffee shop.

The untouched cup of hot caramel sat in front of her.

Jian Yue raised her eyes and looked at the girl. “Auntie has a question to ask you.”

Seeing the girl’s expression of confusion, Jian Yue didn’t speak immediately.

Xu Pinyu recalled what her public speaking teacher had said: the longer the pause, the more important the next sentence would be.

After a moment, Jian Yue asked her, “Why do you have the surname Xu?”

Xu Pinyu was taken aback and forced a smile. “Auntie, that’s a strange question. There’s no reason why.”

“My father’s surname is Xu, so of course, my surname is Xu too.” As she answered, her gaze seemed uncertain, as if resisting something.

Jian Yue asked again, “Then…”

Her tone became a little bit more careful. “Does your father live with you now?”

Xu Pinyu stared at her hands under the table, pursed her lips and remained silent for a moment, then shook her head.

Jian Yue could tell that she seemed unwilling to bring up this topic.

Her hands didn’t have the roughness of a middle-aged woman, they were smooth and delicate.

Her hands with the evenly painted crimson nails picked up the silver spoon and stirred the dark brown coffee.

Jian Yue put down the spoon and said, “Actually, Auntie has something to discuss with you.”

Upon hearing this, Xu Pinyu focused her gaze on her.

After a brief moment of contemplation, Jian Yue said, “You’re still young, and what I’m going to say next may seem unfair to you.”

Jian Yue smiled and said, “If Youbai was just an ordinary person, I would be very happy that he found a pure and beautiful girl like you.”

She restrained her smile and her gaze became solemn, “But because he was born into the Shen family, his future relationships and marriage are not something he can decide for himself. He is very aware of this, and he has always been aware of it since he was young.”

Shen Wensong also succumbed to the Shen family and ultimately chose to marry Jian Yue as a sacrifice in a business alliance.

Even so, this tragedy had to happen.

Fortunately, Shen Youbai had always been obedient and distant from his parents.

His terrifying growth had no transition, no rebellious phase. Overnight, he became calm and aloof.

It was like forcing a child onto a high-rise building made of steel and concrete, then watching him jump off.

Jian Yue often dreamed of him landing on the ground, and looking down from a height, his bloody and mangled body looked beautiful, like colorful silk spreading out.

Every time she woke up, her hands couldn’t stop trembling.

Jian Yue frowned. “So now, his decision is you, which means he has given up the Shen family and any other family alliances.”

After a pause, she continued, “Being with you, he won’t gain anything.”

Xu Pinyu was stunned, staring at her blankly.

Jian Yue earnestly said, “As long as you leave Youbai, Auntie will ensure that you attend the best university, and you can even go abroad. Whatever problems you encounter, Auntie will help you solve them.”

She knew that Shen Youbai being compliant and allowing them to control him was simply because he was indifferent.

He didn’t take anything to the heart at all, so there was no need for rebellion.

The most terrifying thing about such a person was not when he encountered something he was hungry and thirsty for. It was when he finally possessed it.

If Xu Pinyu was a rose, he would still hold onto the thorny stem even if his wrist was severed.

Therefore, only when the rose chose to wither could it end.

As she spoke, Xu Pinyu remained silent throughout.

Jian Yue sighed softly. “You’re a sensible and intelligent child. I hope you think carefully about it.”

When school was over, the sky was about to darken.

It was the sign of early winter, with short days and long nights.

Chen Zixuan glanced at Xu Pinyu, who had been sleeping with her face buried in her arms on the desk since they returned to class.

After some contemplation, she decided not to wake her up.

Xu Pinyu was actually awake and feeling a bit cold, but she was too lazy to get up and close the window.

The conversations of others entered her ears, and as they left, there was a moment of silence.

Her phone had been vibrating under the desk for quite some time, but she ignored it.

The almost empty building allowed the sound of the evening breeze to be heard, brushing against the windows.

Shen Youbai arrived at the door of Class K and looked inside.

He saw her amidst the shadows of the desks and chairs.

His brows furrowed.

The empty classroom made Xu Pinyu fall asleep for a while.

She was awakened by the sound of the window being pulled. She raised her head.

It was Shen Youbai, who pulled the window and fastened it.

He was wearing a dark brown wool coat.

Xu Pinyu glanced at him, then buried her face again and whispered, “Auntie came to find me this afternoon.”

She couldn’t see Shen Youbai’s expression, but she heard his footsteps approaching, coming to her side.

Xu Pinyu pursed her lips and added, “She persuaded me to break up with you for your own good. But I always felt something was wrong, though I couldn’t quite explain it.”

Shen Youbai looked at her as she turned her head to face him and stared at him with her head resting on her arm. She asked, “Am I thinking too much?”

The eyes that looked directly at him became clearer, while his gaze became darker.

Shen Youbai said, “Had she ever mentioned Shen Wensong?”

Xu Pinyu was confused, furrowing her brows. Then her expression lit up, but she was still perplexed. “Isn’t that your…”

His father.

“Maybe you and I are related by blood.”

Shen Youbai’s tone was as flat as if he was commenting on the evening’s cooling temperature.

After he finished speaking, Xu Pinyu’s brain automatically looped for several times before she figured out the situation.

She sat up straight, her eyes widening. “You and me…”

After a brief pause, she continued in a daze, “Are siblings?”

In response to her incredulity, Shen Youbai was overly nonchalant.

It seemed that to him, this was something more irrelevant than the temperature drop.

Xu Pinyu’s voice trembled, “Why do you look so indifferent?”

Her words successfully managed to make Shen Youbai stare at her darkly.

As she watched his figure move, Xu Pinyu lowered her head and shouted, “Don’t come over!”

Her sharp voice echoed through the classroom.

An airplane flew low overhead, and the roaring sound lingered for several seconds.

Xu Pinyu looked up at him, her face filled with a bleak expression, and she forced a smile. “…It’s disgusting.”

The next second, Shen Youbai forcefully kicked the chair out from under her.

The sudden weightlessness caused Xu Pinyu to fall, but her collar was grabbed, and she was lifted just centimeters from the ground.

With a loud crash, the chair fell to the ground.

She panicked and held on, clutching her lifeline — his arm.

Shen Youbai leaned over, his grip on her collar turning white. “Isn’t it disgusting, then let go ah.”

Xu Pinyu was momentarily frightened before coming back to her senses. She begged for mercy in a tearful tone, “I’m sorry, I was wrong. I won’t dare to tease you anymore.”

He forcefully pulled his arm back, and Xu Pinyu lunged into his embrace, tightly wrapping her arms around his waist.

Since the beginning, Shen Youbai had a strange feeling that she wouldn’t react like that.

However, those words were truly harsh.

Xu Pinyu pressed against his chest, her breath carrying a faint scent of smoke, and she angrily said, “If I injure my brain from falling, can you afford to compensate me?!”

But Shen Youbai replied, “I would be much more relaxed if you became a vegetable.”

For a moment, Xu Pinyu was fuming. She pushed at his chest, but before she could say anything, he pulled her back into his embrace.

She struggled for a few moments before giving up.

Her nose brushed against his clothes, and finally, her chin rested on his chest.

It was she who looked up, looking at Shen Youbai.

Xu Pinyu spoke softly, “My mother never gave birth to me. She adopted me from an orphanage.”

Shen Youbai was momentarily taken aback, not shocked, nor did he show any signs of joy.

He had long since ceased to care about the ludicrous notion of blood relationship and whether or not Xu Pinyu could accept it.

Such an extreme and pathological person, she could either save him or be tormented by him.

Finally, when she saw him distracted, Xu Pinyu reached out and pinched his earlobe, murmuring, “And even if we are siblings, even if we grew up together, sooner or later…”

Her gaze met Shen Youbai’s eyes. “We would commit incest.”

Xu Pinyu laughed, and as if he had caught a whiff of her own scent, it made him restless.

He raised her chin, issuing a warning, “Say less.”

Then he kissed her.

The wet and hot entanglement made her tiptoe, hooking her arms around his neck to meet him.

The mixed saliva was like a drug, and when she became dizzy from drinking it, she let him pick her up and sit her on the desk.

The question was, how did his hand end up under her skirt?

Stardust: I couldn’t resist the wait as well, so I just released till this chapter. Their family situation is like a typical soap drama lol. Jian Yue might as well offer Xu Pinyu a million dollars or smth.

But damn, this couple is mutually obsessed. Not even the possibility of incest could stop them.
