Butterfly (3)

The cabin announcement reminded her that the plane would be landing in fifteen minutes.

The economy class seat was so narrow that Xu Pinyu couldn’t even stretch her arms if she wanted to.

Looking out the window, the blue sea was hidden under sparse clouds.

Her gaze swept to the magazine tucked behind the seat in front of her. The building on the cover looked familiar.

It was the Jinglu Hotel, where she worked.

It seemed to have become a tourist attraction in Feizhou Island.

Yes, after all, the hotel had a prime location and many attractive features, such as an outdoor waterfall-style swimming pool, indoor golf course, and other gimmicky perks.

If the room rate wasn’t so high, she would have liked to stay in a luxury suite, just to spite herself.

Another guestroom supervisor, who had been hired two years before Xu Pinyu, had some family matters to attend last week and asked her to switch shifts.

Because she was a senior colleague who had always been kind to her, Xu Pinyu did not even think about it and agreed.

After staying up for several nights in a row, she finally had a chance to go to Dezhi during her short vacation.

But after going back and forth, she felt even more tired.

It was exactly two o’clock in the afternoon when she arrived at the hotel. She first went to the lounge and cut two packets of instant coffee.

She poured the powder into a cup without sugar, stirred it up, added half a cup of cold water, then drank it down in one gulp as if it was a traditional Chinese medicine.

She wrinkled her face and stuck out her tongue. It was so bitter that her throat hurt.

When she was in the locker room getting ready to change into her formal wear, Lin Minmin sent her a text message asking for her location.

Xu Pinyu replied truthfully, and within seconds of the “Sent” notification flashing, the door opened.

Lin Minmin was the room attendant under her, but she was three years older than Xu Pinyu. Unfortunately, her education was too low and she had to climb up the ladder for two years before she could become an attendant.

According to her, she was hired by the hotel because she knew Spanish.

So in private, she and Xu Pinyu got along easily, without any sense of hierarchy.

Lin Minmin was holding a teapot from a guest room and leaning against the wardrobe. She looked at Xu Pinyu with a solemn expression and said, “I have some bad news for you.”

Xu Pinyu had just put on her shirt, and her movements slowed down involuntarily. She looked at her with a puzzled expression, waiting for her to continue.

Lin Minmin continued, “Our hotel has been acquired.”

The stunned Xu Pinyu forgot to button her shirt, exposing her chest wrapped in a white bra.

Lin Minmin raised her chin and clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, which brought Xu Pinyu back to her senses. She quickly turned sideways and buttoned up her shirt.

To satisfy her curiosity, Lin Minmin didn’t wait for her to ask and said, “The background of the new owner has not been disclosed for the time being.”

She looked back at the closed door and leaned in close to Xu Pinyu, whispering, “The CEO who came to take over the hotel this morning is already staying in the presidential suite.”

Xu Pinyu smiled and said, “Do you want to find this domineering CEO and try your luck?”

Lin Minmin shook her head with a serious expression. “I’m not in the mood for that right now. I’m most worried that there will be a major shake-up in the upper management and that there will be layoffs!”

Finding a wealthy man to support her as a mistress while young, and then collecting a few houses for retirement—

Lin Minmin knew that she did not have that level. She just wanted to keep the high-paying position in front of her.

When she mentioned layoffs, Xu Pinyu also felt a little nervous.

Lin Minmin gossiped, “Those department managers with Gao Peng are probably leaving. I don’t know how Zhang Shengping, that scumbag, got wind of it, but he must have been sticking to the new owner for a long time. He used to act dumb and fawn over Gao Peng, but now he’s acting arrogant.”

Gao Peng was the current chairman of Jinglu Hotel. He was over 50 years old, but he still had a sharp eye and was a good leader.

Zhang Shengping, the rotten scum mentioned by Lin Minmin, was the deputy general manager of the hotel. He had a very problematic work style, and Xu Pinyu simply avoided him at all costs.

Lin Minmin said sympathetically, “He always looks at you with a very obvious gaze. You should be careful.”

As far as Xu Pinyu’s appearance was concerned, to put it kindly, she was elegant and beautiful, and less kindly put, troublesome; easily getting other’s attention.

But sometimes, trouble could also be turned into convenience, depending on what she thought.

So, Lin Minmin also said, “If you just want to use him to get to the top, then pretend I never said that.”

Xu Pinyu frowned, “Thank you ah, but it’s a pity that he’s got a greasy forehead and a big belly. I can’t sleep even with my eyes covered.”

Lin Minmin couldn’t stop laughing.

As the old saying goes, speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao appears1.

Xu Pinyu just walked out of the locker room and met the staff from the day shift, who was obviously coming for her.

“Supervisor, Mr. Zhang wants you to see him.”

Xu Pinyu was startled.

Lin Minmin immediately gave her a reassuring look.

Standing in front of the office door, Xu Pinyu took a deep breath.

She knocked on the door and opened it, “Mr. Zhang, are you looking for me?”

Zhang Shengping was sitting in a wide leather chair. When he saw her coming in, he closed the newspaper in his hand.

He slowly took off his glasses and wiped them with a lens cloth, saying, “You’ve heard about the hotel, right?”

Xu Pinyu calmly replied, “I’ve heard a little.”

Zhang Shengping looked up at her and said, “The layoffs are certain. As for how many layoffs and who to lay off, this is debatable. The results will not come out so soon.”

Xu Pinyu lightly furrowed her brows. Her thoughts were a bit confused, and she didn’t respond to his words.

“I called you here because I wanted to do some ideological work for you and the other new employees. Don’t be too nervous. Nothing is certain yet. Who knows, you might even get promoted because of this, right?”

Zhang Shengping raised a smile that he thought was friendly.

Xu Pinyu glanced at his face and felt quite repulsed, then she discreetly averted her gaze.

He picked up a book from his desk, handing it to her, saying, “This is a book I really like. It covers many life principles and workplace skills. Take it and read it carefully.”

Xu Pinyu hesitated for a moment, not quite understanding the implied meaning, so she extended her hands to take it.

But he held her hand back, his hot palm covering hers. Zhang Shengping smiled ambiguously and said, “When you return the book, just send me a text.”

Xu Pinyu swiftly withdrew her hand along with the book, forced herself to stay calm, and left the office.

She walked back to the duty room in a panic. She held a paper cup in front of the water dispenser to get some water, only to see that her hands were trembling slightly.

After gulping down a few sips of ice-cold water, she put down the paper cup and picked up the book to open a page that was bulging.

Inside was a room key card.

Ridiculous. It was still from the Jinglu Hotel.

If she accepted it, would that be considered as indirectly fulfilling a wish?

Xu Pinyu squeezed the room card and walked to the trash can.

She had already raised her hand, but suddenly she couldn’t throw it down.

The internal struggle lasted less than a few seconds before being interrupted by the urgent ringing of the telephone.

Xu Pinyu subconsciously put the room card in her pocket and picked up the landline receiver. “Hello, duty room?”

Su Hong heard the voice and immediately recognized her. “Yumao2, right? I can’t leave, can you help me bring a box of cold medicine to A1803?”

A1803 was a presidential suite, which was only occupied once every six months on average. It wasn’t the peak season at present.

The person staying inside should be the new CEO of the hotel.

Xu Pinyu hung up the phone and hurried to the pharmacy to get the cold medicine, then took a bottle of vitamin C tablets.

At this moment, in the spacious office within the suite, a faint and lingering smoke wafted from the ashtray.

A woman sat to the side, tapping her fingers on the laptop keyboard.

The person at the main seat had long and distinct joints. His fingers were flipping through documents.

Yuan Qing stopped after she finished her notes and briefly explained the current matters.

She suddenly remembered, “In addition, Miss Jiang Yizhen said today…”

Without lifting his eyes, Shen Youbai interrupted, “Tell her I don’t have time.”

Being interrupted so quickly, Yuan Qing paused for a moment, then said, “But she’s already…”

“Have the flight tickets been booked?”

Shen Youbai interrupted again, this time finally looking at her.

He frowned slightly, showing that he was far more concerned about this matter than Jiang Yizhen.

Regarding Jiang Yizhen, it was definitely Old Director Shen who opened the back door, and so she had the whereabouts of Young Director Shen.

If it were to annoy a man, at least it would be some form of attention, but unfortunately, Shen Youbai completely ignored her.

If it were Yuan Qing, she would have given up long ago, and she didn’t know what kind of spell this famous model lady had fallen under.

In Europe, she repeatedly raided Young Director Shen’s home at night, resulting in scandals flying all over the world.

Young Director Shen quickly bought off the news, making Yuan Qing feel something was fishy.

Unbelievably, Jiang Yizhen paid triple to the paparazzi to make it to the news. This was probably the most attention she had ever gotten.

It was also the first time Yuan Qing witnessed Shen Youbai losing his temper so greatly, nearly burning down the entire house.

Yuan Qing quickly replied, “It’s booked. The flight is at 10 PM.”

Shen Youbai nodded and looked back to the document in his hand.

Before returning to China, Yuan Qing witnessed with her own eyes how desperate a person could be at work.

It was said that Young Director Shen’s ambitions were too great, which might not be good for the Shen family.

But Yuan Qing deeply felt that he was just trying to bring forward his return date by half a month.

After Shen Youbai learned that he successfully took over the hotel, he asked Yuan Qing to book a flight to another city.

This further confirmed her thoughts.

To revisit the old place in such a hurry, he must be looking for someone.

Intuition told her it was a woman.

But he just arrived on the island this morning, caught a severe cold, and was leaving again at night. How could his body handle all of this?

After thinking for a moment, Yuan Qing kindly advised, “Mr. Shen, I think it’s best for you to take a rest. Why not change your flight to tomorrow morning?”

Shen Youbai looked up, paused, and asked, “Has the phone number been restored?”

She thought there was a turning point, but she didn’t expect him to ask about this.

Helpless, Yuan Qing’s advice fell on deaf ears. He wouldn’t listen at all.

She nodded, “It’s done.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the doorbell rang.

Yuan Qing came out of the office, walked to the door, and looked out through the peephole.

It was a woman in professional attire, wearing a hotel employee badge on her chest.

She opened the door, took the medicine box, and immediately said, “Thank you, could you also take away the utensils over there?”

Xu Pinyu looked at where she was pointing, which was the tea table in the living room.

She nodded to Yuan Qing and walked onto the brown-red floor in high heels, but her footsteps were very light.

There was still a lot of food left on the table. It was not difficult to see that it was originally all delicacies, but it’s a pity that no one appreciated them.

The living room extended to a terrace facing the sea, and a gentle breeze rustled the white curtains.

Xu Pinyu neatly packed the tableware and saw that the full ashtray was also dumped on the plate.

Before returning to the office, Yuan Qing took another look at her.

It was probably because of her suspicions from working as Shen Youbai’s assistant for the past few years.

She always believed that when a beautiful woman got close to Young Director Shen, it was for some purpose.

Xu Pinyu picked up the tray and turned to the door, catching a glimpse of several framed paintings leaning against the corner.

She stopped.

The one leaning on the outermost side was a butterfly.

And its wings were made of feathers.

Yuan Qing put down the medicine box, thinking that it would be better to let him take it now.

So she walked out with a cup to pour hot water, only to see Xu Pinyu standing still in front of the door.

Yuan Qing asked, “Is there anything else you need?”

Xu Pinyu came to her senses and subconsciously turned towards the source of the voice.

From this position, she could see the man sitting in the office with his back to her.

She averted her gaze and said, “Sorry to bother you.”

Then she hastily left.

Hearing that voice, Shen Youbai raised his eyelids.

He quickly turned to look, a second too late, as the door had just closed.

Speak of the devil: The phrase refers to the time when you are talking about someone, and he or she appears immediately. Hàn Xiàn Dì (an emperor in the Han dynasty) was attacked by Li Jue and Guo Si, then Hàn Xiàn Dì ordered a messenger to send a message to Cao Cao to help him out. But before Cao Cao could receive the message, he had already ordered the military officer Xia Houdun to save Hàn Xiàn Dì. Eventually, Li Jue and Guo Si were defeated by Cao Cao, then he was granted a higher title because of the victory. Since then, the proverb “说曹操,曹操到 (shuō Cáo Cāo, Cáo Cāo dào)” was widespread. ↩︎ Yumao from her name Pinyu. Means feather. ↩︎
