Child (2)

Zhou Qitang often reminded him to say his name when something happened, no matter what it was.

He repeated it twice before Xu Pinyu blinked and came back to her senses, “This name… sounds familiar.”

Because she wanted to hear what he said, she was very close to the boy’s cheeks.

The distance was close to kissing up.

Shen Youbai frowned and made a small sound between his teeth, tsk.

Xu Pinyu was thinking about something intently, then stood up and walked to the cupboard, where she found a magazine.

She returned to the boy’s side, pointed to the magazine cover, and asked, “Look, is this the man in the picture?”

The boy glanced at it briefly, then lowered his eyes and nodded.

The cover was dirty. From a few dark and faint coffee marks and oil stains, one could tell how it was used in the past.

The printed text read, “Zhou Qitang, Famous Band Producer.”

In fact, Xu Pinyu was quite surprised that Zhou Qitang appeared in the public eye from time to time.

After all, no amount of money could completely cover up the severe impact of that incident.

She turned to Shen Youbai and said, “I lost my phone last month.”

Xu Pinyu finally saw his gloomy expression and felt a bit puzzled and hesitant. Her voice gradually became quieter as she continued, “I got the number back, but all the saved contacts are gone.”

The implication was that it was entirely up to him to find Zhou Qitang’s contact information.

Shen Youbai didn’t answer, stared at her for a while, and then took out his phone.

Seeing him call his assistant, Xu Pinyu breathed a sigh of relief.

Curious, she asked the boy beside her, “Then what’s your relationship with him?”

The boy shook his head.

Xu Pinyu refused to give up, “Is he your dad?”

He shook his head again.

Even though the task was unexpected, Yuan Qing completed it quickly and efficiently.

Pushing open the partially closed door, she glanced at the situation inside the duty room and knocked on the door, “Mr. Shen.”

She walked up to Shen Youbai and handed him a note, “This is Zhou Qitang’s private number.”

As she left, she nodded respectfully towards Xu Pinyu.

Xu Pinyu hurriedly responded with a smile. She wasn’t used to being treated like this and was afraid it would shorten her lifespan.

Shen Youbai dialed the number and made a call.

Three seconds later, the call was connected. Someone from the other side answered, “Hello, who is it?”

He said in a cold voice, “Shen Youbai.”

Seeing Shen Youbai move the phone from his ear to his eyes, Xu Pinyu asked, “What’s wrong?”

He said, “Hung up.”

Xu Pinyu stared for a moment, then burst out laughing.

She laughed and said, “Looks like you’re not very popular.”

Shen Youbai didn’t think so.

Xu Pinyu took his phone and said, “Let me make the call.”

This time, the phone was connected quickly, but the other party went straight to the point, “Save your energy. I don’t really want to talk to you for business or personal reasons.”

“No, no, no, don’t hang up. It’s Xu Pinyu.” Sensing that he would cut off the call right afterward, Xu Pinyu hurriedly spoke.

The other party seemed to be digesting this amount of information. After waiting for a while, he said meaningfully, “Ah…”

His tone was slightly amused, “You still fell into his hands.”

The lines Xu Pinyu had prepared got stuck in her throat because of this sentence.

Being discovered by someone, she seemed to be annoyed and angry, but with a faint smile, she said, “I’m too lazy to talk nonsense with you, come and pick up the child quickly.”

“Whose child?”

“Your child.”

The other side said with amusement, “Where did I get a child…”

After a pause, he lowered his voice and said, “Give me the address.”

Shen Youbai watched her talking on the phone, her eyes filled with a proud and delighted look when she smiled, and her lips had a rosy color that seemed to radiate from within.

He averted his gaze and shifted it back to her neat and white teeth.

Feeling restless and agitated.

The next second after Xu Pinyu said the address, the cell phone was pulled out of her palm.

She looked up blankly. Shen Youbai put the phone back into the inner pocket of his coat and crossed his arms.

With eyes that couldn’t be distinguished as cold or calm, he stared at her and said, “You have a good relationship with him.”

Xu Pinyu explained carefully, “It’s not that good. I don’t have much contact with him.”

She was afraid that Shen Youbai would misunderstand, so she added carefully, “It’s just sending newsletters during festivals and so on, as well as looking for him to rub off some concert tickets…”

Before she could finish speaking, he moved away from the table and walked to the door in a few steps.

“…Where are you going?” Xu Pinyu’s eyes followed him.

Shen Youbai stopped, turned back and asked, “Do I need to report to Supervisor Xu about where I’m going?”

In the duty room, the two remaining people sat quietly.

Xu Pinyu was temporarily lost in thought, and he wasn’t going to say anything.

She withdrew her gaze and looked down at the boy.

Confused and serious, Xu Pinyu asked, “Why is he angry?”

It was 5:30 in the evening. Because Lin Minmin had managed to spare some time, they had arranged dinner early.

Xu Pinyu listened to her crackling complaints, and suddenly Lin Minmin mentioned what happened at noon.

She held her chopsticks, her eyes glowing, “I’ve only seen pictures of him before, but today I finally got to see him in real life. Those long legs, those broad shoulders, oh my god.”

Xu Pinyu picked up a piece of crispy meat and stuffed it into her mouth.

It’s been an eventful season lately. Just after walking out of the dining area, Lin Minmin was called again.

She took off her earphones with a curse and asked Xu Pinyu to bring her a cup of coffee.

It was 6:30 in the evening. As Xu Pinyu walked towards the duty room, her phone vibrated, but she was holding the coffee with both hands.

She quickened her pace and returned to the duty room, placing down the paper cup and taking out her phone.

Shen Youbai had come face to face with her twice in the afternoon, but he only glanced at her and didn’t say a word.

Xu Pinyu was a little at a loss.

After the call was connected, he asked coldly, “Have you eaten?”

Xu Pinyu nodded her head to the air, “En, I’ve eaten.”

She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but all she heard was the busy tone of a disconnected call.

He hung up.

Xu Pinyu was stunned for a moment before bursting into laughter.

Although she didn’t understand why he was angry in the first place.

But she couldn’t help but think it was cute.

Lin Minmin walked in and picked up the coffee, looking at her doubtfully, “What are you laughing at?”

Xu Pinyu pursed her lips to suppress her smile and shook her head, “It’s nothing.”

It was 9:10 in the evening. Xu Pinyu held the boy’s hand and sat down in the lounge area next to the lobby.

Shen Youbai called.

She answered, but before she could say anything, he asked, “When do you get off work?”

Xu Pinyu couldn’t help but raise the corners of her mouth, “I’ve already finished my shift, and I’m waiting for Zhou Qitang.”

As soon as she finished speaking, she was hung up again.

Noticing that the boy liked playing games on his phone, Xu Pinyu propped her cheek on her hand and watched him quietly tapping the screen.

She was lost in thought for who knows how long, until a shadow cast over.

Her gaze moved from a pair of slender legs upwards, soon landing on Zhou Qitang’s striking face.

Xu Pinyu smiled, “Why didn’t Lu Yin come with you?”

Zhou Qitang raised an eyebrow, “It’s not like we’re here to play cards, so what’s the point of making a pair.”

The boy had already put down his phone and was obediently standing next to Zhou Qitang.

Zhou Qitang glanced at him, then introduced to Xu Pinyu, “His name is Zhou Le, my nephew.”

Xu Pinyu nodded.

Zhou Qitang added, “Now you know.”

She leaned in front of Zhou Le and praised with a smile, “Wow, what a unique name.”

Zhou Qitang said, “Don’t waste your expressions, he has autism.”

Xu Pinyu was taken aback.

“It’s hereditary. My sister has mental issues, and I don’t know why she suddenly brought him here.”

Zhou Qitang used a normal tone, as if describing a very ordinary thing.

Zhou Le tugged at Zhou Qitang’s pants leg, looked up, and said with a weak voice, “Auntie…”

Zhou Qitang looked at him, “Your aunt didn’t come. Go home and look for her.”

Although Zhou Le would say his name after something happened, it was a rule that Zhou Qitang repeated to him every day.

Zhou Le was closer to Lu Yin than to himself or his biological parents.

Xu Pinyu saw them off at the hotel entrance. Where her eyes gazed, the light river shimmered, and above it was the dark night sky.

The sea breeze surged, and the tide constantly sounded.

Zhou Qitang turned around and said, “We’ll go first. Come find us when you have time.”

She smiled and nodded.

The meeting should have ended there, but Zhou Qitang leaped over the glass door and saw something.

He took a big step forward and hugged Xu Pinyu.

It was a gentleman’s embrace, and there was still some space between their bodies.

So Xu Pinyu didn’t push him away, but asked in confusion, “Why the sudden…”

Not waiting for her to finish, Zhou Qitang lowered his arms and once again held the child beside him, “Let’s go.”

Xu Pinyu didn’t understand why and watched them get into a car.

The taillights disappeared into the night, and only then did she turn around.

Xu Pinyu hurriedly entered the hotel door, avoiding a gust of cold wind.

She looked up, and her footsteps halted.

Shen Youbai was standing there, leaning against a marble pillar.

His hands were in his pockets, wearing a burgundy wool overcoat with a dark gray sweater underneath.

In the warm light of the hotel lobby, his expression was deep and dark.
