The relationship between Wu Zetian and Buddhism is far more than that. After becoming emperor, Wu Zetian promoted the spread and promotion of Buddhism in China with practical actions.

There are two short stories about the "Prohibition of slaughter order", which can explain Wu Zetian's contribution to promoting the development of Buddhism.

Empress Wu believed in Buddhism, so after she became the emperor, she issued a prohibition on slaughter, that is, no killing and no eating big fish and meat. It was not easy for everyone to abide by the creed of life, so many people felt it hard not to eat meat at that time. What if the Emperor didn't allow meat and wanted to eat meat himself? So there are many things that have policies and countermeasures.

Empress Wu sent the Prime Minister of the current Dynasty to patrol and walk station by station. As soon as the post Cheng saw that the big man came, he wanted to curry favor with the prime minister. He wanted to eat something good for the prime minister and served him a pot of mutton.

The post Cheng was very clever and said that the sheep was killed by a wolf. The prime minister heard that it was killed by a wolf. It doesn't matter. Eat. After eating, he brought a plate of fish. No, the emperor said that fish could not be salvaged. The post Cheng said that the fish was killed by wolves. The prime minister said, why are you so stupid? If you want to say that the fish was killed by otters.

The next day, Empress Wu called the official who gave birth to her son and said, "I heard you gave birth to a son. Congratulations. Take out a piece of meat and say where did this come from?"? The little official was so frightened that he couldn't get up when he knelt there.

At this time, Empress Wu spoke. She said that I had issued a prohibition on slaughter. I hope everyone has compassion and don't kill animals for no reason. However, I don't intervene in weddings and funerals, so I don't blame you for killing sheep or eating meat, but if you treat later, you must choose a guest, which is what the person told me. The informer blushed and the whole court wanted to spit on him.

In fact, not only these folk stories, Empress Wu really did a lot of things that were very beneficial to the promotion of Buddhism after becoming an emperor. Among them, the introduction and translation of Buddhist scriptures is an important measure.

It is well known that Tang Sanzang finally retrieved a large number of Buddhist scriptures in the west after experiencing the difficulties of 99.81. But I'm afraid few people know that Wu Zetian's role in the introduction and promotion of Buddhist scriptures is even greater than that of Tang Sanzang.

The most important reason is that a Buddhist sutra once gave Empress Wu an excuse to be an emperor, or Empress Wu found a theoretical basis to support her as a empress in a Buddhist sutra.

This Buddhist Sutra is the famous Dayun Sutra.

Wu Zetian became emperor with a female body, which has never been seen in Chinese history. In order to prove the rationality of her accession to the throne, we can only find the basis outside the Confucian and Taoist classics. Therefore, when she saw that Buddhism supported the doctrine that women should be emperors, she was naturally overjoyed, promulgated the relevant doctrines all over the world, and vigorously promoted the Buddhist dharma. And this Buddhist Sutra is the great cloud Sutra.

The great cloud Sutra tells such a story. Jingguang tiannv once heard the great Nirvana Sutra from the same-sex lamp Buddha. Later, When Sakyamuni Buddha was alive, she was born into the world with a mortal fetus and heard the profound meaning of Buddhism again. Although she was a woman, she later became a king and gained a quarter of the territory under the command of the Runner King. She also educated men, women, old and young in her field, eliminated all kinds of evil opinions and dissidents, and became a Bodhisattva.

In the first year of Tianshu, that is, in July of the year when Wu Zetian changed from Tang Dynasty to Zhou Dynasty, monks Huai Yi and faming wrote the Dayun Sutra, which attached the above story to the "Buddha's" Sutra "for Wu Zetian's empress, that is, prophecy.

With this prophecy, Wu Zetian can be an emperor in a dignified way. Therefore, Wu Zetian promulgated the Dayun Sutra to the world. Chang'an, Luoyang and other states were ordered to set up a Dayun temple, each with a copy of Dayun Sutra, which was explained by monks.

In this way, people all over the world will know that Wu Zetian was Maitreya and should replace Li Tang as emperor. Subsequently, Wu Zetian officially declared herself emperor in September of that year and changed the country's name to Zhou.

Chinese Confucianism strongly opposed women's interference in politics, so after the Tang Dynasty, people often talked about the Dayun Sutra, which was used to accuse Wu Zetian of forging Buddhist scriptures and cheating the world.

Is there a doctrine in the Buddhist scriptures that women should be emperors? The answer is: Yes. There is a story in the Buddhist Sutra that a woman is king in the afterlife.

Buddha said that seven hundred years after nirvana, there was a small country called Wuming in South Tianzhu; There is a river in China, called black Jaja; On the South Bank of the river, there is a city called Hushu; There was a king in the city, called waiting for ride; The king and his wife had a daughter named Zeng. One day, the king will die suddenly. At that time, the ministers will let his daughter grow up to inherit the throne. After she ascends the throne, the world will be powerful. All the countries in Yan futi will come to serve her without rejection and disobedience.

This story shows that the doctrine that women can be emperors has been clear at least since the Buddhist Scripture recorded it.

After being suppressed by Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism completely recovered its lost position when Wu Zetian was in power. It can not be said that Wu Zetian was the patriarch of ZTE Buddhism.

After Wu Zetian became emperor, she sent someone to receive Shenxiu, the leader of the northern sect of Zen, to Luoyang, and then carried him into a sedan chair and knelt down in person. Her practice has attracted high-ranking officials and people to follow, and tens of thousands of people come to kneel down to the eminent monk every day.

She also personally welcomed another returned monk. Wu Zetian's affinity with Buddhism means that her legitimacy has gradually increased. Chinese Buddhism has also entered a stage of comprehensive prosperity, the most prosperous being the Wu Zhou Dynasty of Wu Zetian.

Buddhism flourished in three forms: first, a large number of Buddhist scriptures were translated.

Wu Zetian translated the most important Buddhist sutra, the Huayan Sutra. At that time, her majesty always felt that there was too much lack of the sixty "Huayan Sutra" translated in the Jin Dynasty. She felt very sorry. Therefore, she sent a special envoy to India to ask for a complete copy of the Sutra.

A mage of Khotan country happened to have this book in her hand. She even invited the mage to China. This mage is Shicha NANDA. After inviting the master, let him preside over the translation of the Huayan Sutra.

When master Shicha nanduo came, the Huayan sutra was incomplete. But there are 9000 more chants than the scriptures translated by Jin Dynasty, a total of 45000 chants, and the teachings of the great scriptures can be seen. At that time, the translation field was very large, and Wu Zetian herself often went to participate. After the translation, she even wrote the preface and opened the Sutra for the Huayan Sutra herself.

This is the famous Kaijing verse: "the supreme and profound subtle Dharma has suffered hundreds of thousands of disasters; I can see and hear it today, and I am willing to understand the true meaning of the Tathagata."

Huayan Sutra advocates the common prosperity and coexistence of all things in the world, which is a very bold classic. There were dozens of masters famous for translating scriptures in the Tang Dynasty, and 15 lived in the Wu Zhou era.

Second, Wu Zetian also made important contributions to the construction of temples. She established a Dayun temple in all States of the country. According to historical records, there were 38 famous temples in the Tang Dynasty, of which more than 30% were established in the Wu Zhou period. If there is a Buddhist temple, there must be monks. Xue Huaiyi became the abbot of the White Horse Temple. There were more than 300 monks in the White Horse Temple, but during the Wu and Zhou dynasties, abbot Xue Huaiyi had more than 1000 attendants.

The third contribution is statues. Among all the statues in the Tang Dynasty, the era of Wu Zetian was the most brilliant, and the publicity of Buddhism reached its peak. Wu Zetian's affinity with Buddhism has played a great role in Buddhism. Both Wu Zetian and Buddhism have reached their peak.

Wu Zetian respected Buddhism so much that it was not surprising that she arranged so many Buddha statues to accompany her burial!

PS: bow to thank the 300 reward of "love burying the Dead Sea" and the 200 reward of "looking at the stars on the roof".
