Chapter 56: Slug Club

Slughorn introduced everyone there one by one. There were kids from all houses, but most were from Slytherin. It was understandable as most Slytherin were from well-established families.

After that, dinner started. Magnus now understands one thing, that this old man was not interested in anything but increasing his contacts.

The way he operated was simple, by now he had organised so many Slug Clubs that he had his students all around the world, some rich, some powerful and some in important places.

With each increasing year, he would have more influence. He would then use the same influence to help the new Slug Club members in achieving greatness, so they might return the favour later on.

He had created a cycle of favours. And he got the most in the end. He'd get the best seats in quidditch matches as he had students in various teams, he had students working in ministry, he had students who owned businesses and sent him free stuff.

Magnus talked with Lily, who had been blushing whenever near him. He somewhat understands this reaction of hers. She seemed to have a crush on him. But, he didn't like her or even saw her in that way.

"Mr Pendragon, Black told me to give this to you." She gave him a piece of paper.

Magnus read it and confirmed it to be the address of Ted Tonks.

"Thanks, also, you can call me Magnus. Hearing Mr Pendragon, again and again, is not very comforting." He said.

Meanwhile, Ragnar and Severus were talking to Slughorn about selling potions.

"Did you two make new potions?" Slughorn asked in amazement.

Ragnar nodded while Snape shook his head. Ragnar revealed his potion first. "This is a portion to increase the pain tolerance of a person."

Slughorn took the vial and checked it. "Hmm, there have been potions developed for hospitals that make body parts go numb. But never increase body tolerance. It can be helpful in some duels too. I need to do some testing on this first, if it is safe then I will suggest you to someone in the Ministry. They will handle the licencing and patenting of this."

Next Snape revealed his creation, "I mainly created a better recipe for an existing potion. I think it can be patented and sold in the market."

"Wonderful, you two have achieved what most Wizards don't in their entire lives. I will surely help you two. Now, let's eat. We will have a debate later." Slughorn was already on cloud nine.

The food was the same as in the grand hall, with the exception of the ice-cream.

After the dinner, Slughorn proposed a debate. "You can all share a topic and we will talk about it."

All gave some boring suggestions, but Magnus had the most interesting one. "I have had one question since I came to this school. I noticed how much food the students eat here, even I myself eat a lot more than I normally do.

"Yet, I do not see a single fat student here. Sure, we may have a few chubby ones but none that can be called fat. So, my topic is simple, why are there no fat kids in Hogwarts?"

His question was weird, yet thought-provoking. Ragnar nodded to his question, "Now that you say it, yes, there is no fat kid in school. Even Hagrid can be considered just... huge... but not fat."

Slughorn too fell into thoughts, "Yes, you are right. I have come across fat wizards in my lifetime fewer times than I can remember."

"So, what is the reason? Why are there so few fat people in the wizarding community than muggles," Magnus asked?

Lucius was also a member of the club, but he had been staying silent for a time now. He spoke now, "It is simple, wizards have a purer body system than muggles."

"No, not everything is related to blood purity, Mr Malfoy, and what did I just hear? Did you just consider all wizards as better people? The muggle-borns too?" Magnus asked in a mocking tone. This shut Lucius up as he did not have his gang here to say yes behind all his words.

Snape made an argument then, "Is it because of Wizards' magic nullifying their body fat?"

"Maybe we have different anatomy." Emma guessed.

"Or we might have magic responsible for it," Lily added.

Magnus nodded at her, "Lily is right, magic is directly responsible. Now, what I am going to share with you is a theory at the moment because I had no authority or experience to cut open a wizard to do the tests.

"Since I had this question in mind, I decided to try it. On normal days, I would eat a lot, and still not gain weight. It was normal. I always felt full of energy. Then for one day, I did not eat enough purposefully. Then, the next day, I felt very tired, not to mention hungry.

"However, then I found something very strange. After a few days, I again did not eat. But, this time, I purposefully did not perform any kind of magic for two days.

"Guess what happened. I did not feel tired at all. That small amount of food was enough for me."

"So it is the magic that makes this happen?" Ragnar asked with not so shocked face.

Magnus nodded, "Yes, but my study did not end there. The real thing is coming now. Since I found out about the magical world, I have been studying all the books I could find about the history of magic. But, in all of them, the origin of magic was unknown. Every single time, it was just so vague.

"Why? Well, I have a theory now. From the fact that using magic and eating less makes me tired, we can understand that the magic we perform is directly related to our own bodies. That magic is probably converted from our body's energy.

"Because as some of you may know, energy can neither be created nor be destroyed, it can only be transformed. In short, magic is nothing but our body's energy.

"But, then why can't muggles perform magic? Well, I have an answer for that too. Do you all know that magic was first observed in Africa and then spread from there?"

Everyone nodded so he continued, "Good, now, humans/muggles also date their ancestors back to Africa. All humans were evolved from countless generations of Great Apes, slowly over the past hundreds of thousands of years.

"Initially, I believe that there was no magic in our world. But then, something happened that created two different evolutionary parts of the same species. From there, humans evolved the same in terms of looks but internally they were different. Later, a part of them grew magical skills.

"These people were usually called priests in their tribes because of their powers. But slowly more magical individuals came. The reason why two muggle partners can have a magical baby is because of the ancient mingling of the two different sub-species.

"Just look at it as some useless parts of our body that we do not need. Like the appendix, it used to help our ancestors help process plants. Did you know that human embryos develop a tail between five and eight weeks after conception? The tail vanishes by the time humans are born, and the remaining vertebrae merge to form the coccyx, or tailbone. Auricular muscles control the visible part of the ear, but humans have lost the ability to use them. Other mammals use these muscles to detect prey and predators.

"There are such countless examples. I think magic is just like that. And in most muggle cases, it stays dormant, but in some cases, it resurfaces. I call this, Theory of Magical Evolution."

He had really spoken too much today and he felt his throat dry up. But, when he finished speaking, all of them except Lucius started clapping.

"Such a believable theory, Mr Pendragon. I think your theory may have some credibility and as long as it is researched we might find the origins of magic." Slughorn praised him.

"Huh, this theory will not hold any value in the wizarding world. It is widely known that Wizards are not evolved from apes, like what muggles are." Lucius argued.

"No, it's probably the British wizarding world. I just talked to Professor Harrison and he told me about how open-minded the American side is. They don't have a lot of this blood purity supremacy going on there." Magnus countered.

Seeing the situation getting worse, Slughorn decided to end the club meeting.

"Ahaha... It's getting late now. All of you should return to your dorms, it'll soon be time for bed." Slughorn said.

Taking the cue, everyone left. Ragnar and Snape were happy with the deal they got from the professor.

Magnus, though, went to his table in the dorm and wrote a letter to Ted Tonks, asking him to meet him.

[Letter]

Hello, Mr Tonks. This is Magnus Grant Emrys Pendragon from Hogwarts. I think this name should be enough to tell you who I am.

I heard that you are a Lawyer in the muggle world. I want to hire you for some business-related matters, mainly on the non-magical side of the world, in the USA.

I want to invest my money, however, the source of money is gold so I can't hire a muggle lawyer without breaking a dozen Ministry laws.

So, I hope to receive a reply from you and meet you soon if possible.

Sincerely,

Magnus.

[Letter end]

Halloween was going to come soon and he hoped to meet Mr Tonks at the Hogsmeade weekend. Although it was not allowed for 1st years to go, he will try to get Dumbledore to agree to it.
