Episode 16 – The Princess Knight and the Frog

Inside the camper, kitchen space.

Naoto put a pot on top of the induction heater and cooked dragon tail stew.

The pot was simmering, and the room was filled with the fragrant aroma of ginger mixed with soy sauce and mirin.

“Patricia, outside pot.”
“Yes, over here.”

Patricia “grew” out of the refrigerator beside him and served as Naoto’s assistant. When she was called over, she handed the pot she had prepared to Naoto.

Naoto turned off the induction heater, grabbed the handle of the sizzling pot, and filled it with what he was given.

鍋はすっぽり入った、ぴったりかみ合っている、ワンセットの内鍋と外鍋だ。

I put a plastic lid on it, and I couldn’t hear the gurgling sound anymore, and the steam stopped coming out.

It appears to be completely sealed.

“Yeah, there we go.”
“Naoto, what’s that?”
“I don’t remember the name of the product, but it’s a kind of heat-retaining cooking pot, and it’s almost completely insulated when you put it inside, so you can cook with the residual heat after it’s boiled. I wanted to eat stewed food or curry on the trip, but boiling all the time would consume too much electricity, so I prepared this kind of pot.
“Hmm? I don’t know, but it’s convenient.”
“Oh, that’s convenient. All we have to do is leave it like this for an hour or more, boil it one last time, and we’re done. Oh, and one of these days I’ll make a stone-baked stew, yum.”

Naoto said and touched the panel embedded in the wall to start the kitchen timer and set it to one hour.

While I was waiting, I was thinking of playing a game with the power saved by the warming pot.

“Master, it’s going to rain.”
“Rain?”

I turned around and looked at Patricia, who had suddenly said something like that.

“Yes, the pressure has suddenly dropped, so it will probably rain. Maybe there will be lightning, too.

I looked at the panel again and checked the air pressure items that Patricia had told me about.

It’s working fine there, and I’m getting a sensible number, but it’s a real-time display, so I can’t tell if it’s going down or not.

I recklessly added instruments, but then I realized that I hadn’t added a comparison function to the previous one.

So, I checked that with Patricia.

“Is it down?”
“Yes, it’s down.”
“Okay.

Naoto thought for a moment and looked out the window.

The sky was definitely dark and it looked like it was about to rain.

And the area around the camper is an open space.

“Well, let’s move the car a bit, if there’s going to be lightning, it’s not safe to be in such an open space.”

According to Naoto’s knowledge, lightning strikes the highest place around, so he decided to at least move the car to a place with trees higher than the camper.

“We’re all here, right?
“I’m here”
“Yes!”
“Woof!”

The voices came one after another.

Unusually, they were all gathered in a six-mat Japanese-style room.

“Okay, let’s move. I’m sorry, Sofia, but I need you to hold this pot. Mimi and the dog are in danger of tipping over, so stay away from them.

I sat in the driver’s seat and used the push start to wake up the motor for battery operation.

I put my foot on the gas pedal to head for the big tree that I could see behind the windshield – about a kilometer away by eye.

“Wait, Master.”
“What’s the matter?”
“There’s something under the rear wheels.”

Patricia, who had stopped Naoto, was staring at the rear of the vehicle, as if she could see through a wall.

“Under the rear wheel?”
“I’ll go check it out”

Sofia said, opening the door and getting out of the camper.

Naoto wondered if the cat was dozing between the tires.

“Ouch!”

A scream that seemed to tear the silk deafened me.

“Sofia!?”

What the hell just happened?

Naoto jumped out of the driver’s seat and rushed towards the scream.

There, I saw Sofia slumped on her buttocks.

“What’s going on, Sofia?”
“Oh, oh, oh.”
“What’s wrong?”
“That’s …….”

Sofia puts out a trembling hand and points to the tire.

When I looked there, I saw a frog under the tire, where it would be run over if I moved the car even a little.

The frogs are carefree, their cheeks puffed up like balloons so that their skin is transparent.

“Oh, so this is what Patricia was talking about”

I looked at Sophia, satisfied with the situation.

“So, you’re not good at this”

Naoto wasn’t really surprised, it seemed a bit over the top, but it wasn’t uncommon for women to have a problem with frogs.

Meanwhile, Mimi caught up with him and was overjoyed to see the frog.

It’s not uncommon for children to like these things.

“Wow, it’s Mr. Kerokero.”
“Is Mimi okay with this stuff?”
“Yes! Because you’re cute.”
“I’ll move the car”
“Yes!”

Mimi nodded with a big smile and trotted off with her hands like plates, frog on top of her.

After the frog was gone, he gave a warm look to Sophia, who was trying to get up and mend her ways, and returned to the driver’s seat.

After slamming the door shut, I thanked Patricia while fastening my seatbelt.

“Thank you, Patricia.”
“Was it a frog?”
“You saw it”
“Thanks to the all-surrounding monitor Master gave me.”
“Oh, that thing I put on the navigation system for parking.”

Naoto said and operated the navigation system, which now showed nothing.

“It’s not out, but you can still tell”
“Because I’m Patricia”
“I see.”

Naoto nodded, satisfied.
Once again, I thanked Patricia.

“Thanks for telling me.”
“Yeah, yeah.”

Patricia puts her hand to her cheek and smiles.

Her cheeks were faintly red, probably because she was happy to be praised by the master.

After confirming that Sophia and Mimi had returned, Naoto started the car.

On the way, as Patricia had told us, it started to rain a little bit, and by the time we reached the tree we were aiming for, it had turned into a real downpour.

I stopped the motor, unbuckled my seatbelt, and was about to flip the driver’s seat.

“Kero”
“Kero?”

When he heard an unfamiliar voice, Naoto furrowed his brow and turned to the direction of the voice.

A six-mat Japanese-style room, Mimi was there, and she was swimming her eyes as hard as she could.

“Mimi? What was that noise?”
“Hey, it’s nothing.
“No, it can’t be nothing.”
“Kero.”
“There it is again”
“Let’s see, …… let’s see, ogo, ogo, ogo!”
“No, it wasn’t this scary squeal. ……”

Sofia mumbled, looking very pale.

She seemed doubly afraid of Mimi’s voice and the identity of the voice she had just heard.

“See, this is what the Oak Sommelier has to say”
“Ugh. ……”

Mimi’s eyes teared up and she hesitated for a while, but then she gave up and pulled out the item she had been hiding under her clothes.

I can see it at a glance, it’s the frog I told you to let go earlier.

As soon as she saw this, Sophia let out a small scream and backed up to the wall.

I’d face a dragon or something on my own, Naoto thought.

“You brought him here?”
“Yeah, …… sorry brother.”
“No, it’s okay, nothing’s wrong with …… Sophia, except she’s scared.”
“I’m not scared!”

At Naoto’s words, Sophia became stubborn as if by spinal reflex.

“Hmm. Mimi, then.”
“What is it?”
“Put that frog on top of Sophia’s head.”
“Uh, but ……”

I glanced at Sofia.

“Do you mind? It’s best to get to know them in person. If you touch it, you might find it surprisingly cute and fall in love with it.

“…… Yeah, I guess so.”

Mimi nodded loudly and turned the frog in her hand, which she used as a plate, toward Sofia.

Sophia backed away, but there wasn’t enough room in the six-mat room for her to escape, and she was soon cornered.

“Sis, …… still hate me?”
“Ugh. ……”
“I’m sorry, …….”

Mimi bowed her head quickly.

“Big brother, I’ll let her go. It’ll scare my sister.”
“Okay.”

Naoto nodded and put his hand on Mimi’s head.

Naoto was unperturbed, but inwardly he was ashamed.

I tried to get Mimi to be mean to Sofia, but she was unintentionally chastised by the young girl.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you do that.”
“No. I’ll let you go then.”

Mimi laughed and opened the door, letting the frog out.

“Ogo-o-goo.”
“Kero.”

Finally, he said something – a goodbye, and the frog jumped away.

Mimi’s profile looked a little sad as she looked away, and Sofia looked apologetic.

“…… Sophia.”

Naoto thought for a moment and called out the princess knight’s name.

“Can you do origami?”
“Huh? No, not that I’ve done much of that.”
“I know you can do it, at least a little. Patricia, there are some papers in the storeroom, please take some out. Mimi, Sofia is going to make an origami frog for us.”
“Yes.”
“I understand.”
“Really?”

Three different reactions.

After that, Naoto stayed with Sophia and taught her origami until the stew was ready.

When Mimi saw the origami frog that Sophia had made for her, she was innocently delighted and played with it all the time, even though the rain prevented her from going outside.
