Chapter 105: Turmoil (3)

"I'm a genius too, you know. Just breaking down two sentences gives me enough juicy content, and it subtly positions me on the right side. You could all learn something from me." With an air of self-satisfaction, Raul Smith stepped out of the elevator and greeted the receptionist, Milly, with his usual warm smile.

But Milly didn't respond as expected. Instead, she gave him a sympathetic look and shook her head. At first Raul didn't think much of it, but after a few steps he stopped and reconsidered.

He turned back to her. "Hey, Milly, is there something not so pleasant going on today?"

"Something not so pleasant?" Milly answered with an amused smile.

"Come on Milly, please tell me. I'd really appreciate it," Raul pleaded, holding out his hands in a pleading manner.

Milly burst into giggles, looked around, leaned in a little closer and lowered her voice. "Mr. Bonnie was here about ten minutes ago, looking pretty unhappy. And then your editor-in-chief, Mr. Mondell, was called in. Be ready, who knows, you could be next."

Raul was taken aback for a moment. Mr. Mondell summoned by the editor-in-chief? What could that be about? Could it have something to do with the article from yesterday? He nodded at Milly. "Thank you, Milly. If I make it through this, dinner's on me."

"Is this a date?" Milly playfully arched an eyebrow.

"Absolutely!" Raul nodded with a grin, then looked around. "All right, I'm going in now. Catch you later."

As he reached his office and settled in, his colleague next door, Alan, popped his head into view. "Good morning, Raul."

"Morning, Alan. What kind of scoop are you hoping to uncover here?" Raul inquired playfully, but his gaze flickered to the editor's office. The transparent glass wall showed no sign of anyone inside.

"Don't bother to look. Mr. Mondell has been summoned by Mr. Bonnie. That's what I wanted to tell you. Doesn't look like a great day today," Alan commiserated.

"All right, Alan, could you stop with the jinx?" Raul tried to sound nonchalant, but a hint of uneasiness crept in. Yesterday's story... it wasn't supposed to be that big of a deal. Slightly exaggerated, perhaps, but wasn't that the essence of entertainment news? Did they really need to dig deeper and expand on it? Raul scratched his head, lost in thought. Just then, one of the editorial assistants, Miss Milton, approached and spoke to him. "Mr. Smith?"

"Huh? Yes, I'm here," Raul snapped out of his reverie and nodded.

"Mr. Bonnie is looking for you." Miss Milton gestured toward the hallway to the right.

Momentarily perplexed, Raul stood up quickly. "All right, I'm on my way."

"Good luck, Raul," Alan nodded sympathetically from next door.

"Thanks, I'll need it," Raul offered with a wry smile, hastily tidied his desk and then followed Miss Milton's lead.

As he walked down the corridor to the right, Mondell crossed his path with a look of sheer disbelief. Raul greeted him, but the man just looked at him, shook his head in disappointment, and walked away without a word. Raul scratched his head in confusion. What's going on here?

At that moment, Miss Milton's voice sounded again. "Mr. Smith!"

"Ah? Sorry, I drifted off," Raul quickly caught up.

"Let's hope you're more present in front of Mr. Bonnie." Miss Milton's tone remained firm.

"Miss Milton, could you please tell me what's going on?" Raul finally couldn't contain his curiosity.

"You can ask Mr. Bonnie when you go in." Miss Milton stopped abruptly and gestured to the editor-in-chief's office right in front of them.

As expected, Raul thought. He offered a wry smile and knocked on the door.

"Come in," Mr. Bonnie's unmistakably calm voice came from the other side.

As Raul entered, the editor-in-chief acknowledged him with a nod. "Please have a seat, Mr. Smith."

"Hello, Mr. Bonnie. Is there a particular matter you wish to discuss with me?" Raul sat down on the desk, feeling a little apprehensive.

"Allow me to be clear, Mr. Smith. Before we delve into this conversation, I think you should read this." Mr. Bonnie's face remained impassive as he handed over a letter.

Raul's surprise was obvious, and he accepted the letter and read its contents intently. The process took him a few minutes and he finally looked up with a smile on his face. "It seems that this individual has taken things a bit too far. I can assure you that while my article may contain some exaggeration, it is firmly grounded in facts."

"Exaggeration typically includes scenarios where at least 60% of the content is factual. Your article borders on defamation, Mr. Smith. We are not a local tabloid in need of sensationalism. I hope that point isn't lost on you," Mr. Bonnie's tone grew stern.

Raul felt a little nervous, but he tried to keep his composure. "Allow me to explain, Mr. Bonnie. My choice of words may have been somewhat ambiguous. There are many different interpretations..."

"Regrettably, the legal review has identified thirteen instances of factual inaccuracies. These provide ample grounds for potential legal action against us. While this is a nation that supports freedom of expression, it is not a domain of freedom for defamation," Mr. Bonnie's expression turned sour.

"Understood, sir. I acknowledge my mistake. I apologize," Raul conceded, his voice tinged with defeat as he hung his head. "I will make a public apology."

"No need, Mr. Smith. I will personally draft the public apology. As for... I regret the situation," the editor-in-chief conveyed an apology that lacked any real remorse.

It took Raul a few moments to process this information before he abruptly stood up. "You can't be serious!"

"Watch your language, Mr. Smith," Mr. Bonnie replied icily, "We absolutely can. Due to your and Mr. Mondell's neglect, we are in a considerable predicament. I am justified in considering your dismissal!"

"But..." Raul was about to protest further, but he quickly closed his mouth. He was no novice in the field of journalism. Even though he had only a few years of experience, his instincts told him that something was wrong.

As a highly influential newspaper, second only to the Big Three, the《Los Angeles Evening News》rarely initiated firings. They vigorously defended their employees. He recalled an incident several years ago when a reporter used an incorrect term while covering a civil trial, leading to accusations of racial bias and even the NAACP calling for his firing. Nevertheless, the paper kept him on, albeit with a temporary suspension.

So what's the issue this time? Considering the personal summoning of the editor-in-chief and his involvement in the letter-writing campaign, and considering Mondell's possible suspension or even dismissal, it was clear that the paper was under considerable pressure. But who could wield such influence over the newspaper? Luc Besson? Or those two girls?

"I... I understand," Raul clenched his fist and bowed his head, "If that concludes our discussion, I believe I can leave now to gather my belongings."

Without waiting for the editor-in-chief's answer, he turned and left. Who could have predicted that a mere snide remark about the so-called genius girl would jeopardize his job? What the hell is going on? Even after leaving the office, Raul's thoughts continued to seethe with frustration.

Within the confines of the office, Mr. Bonnie, still sitting, finally breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, his counterpart had seemed relatively calm. Raul was a competent journalist; it was unfortunate that he had pissed off the wrong people.

Just this morning, the president of the company had called him personally and demanded that he take care of the matter and issue a public apology. More critically, he was tasked with ensuring that there would be no further misreporting of the prodigious Angela Mason, as had occurred the day before.

Had this been the only obligation, it would have been manageable. However, as editor-in-chief of the《Los Angeles Evening News》and someone with extensive connections to other newspapers, he was privy to the fact that many influential newspaper editors-in-chief, including the Big Three, had received similar directives from their superiors: proceed with caution in reporting on Miss Mason.

Mr. Bonnie had no intention of delving into Angela Mason's family background. While he understood her potential as a colossal news story, he also recognized that its publication was an entirely different matter. Inaccurate reporting on this front could not be resolved by simply firing staff. So he had to delegate that responsibility to someone more vigilant and experienced in entertainment news, someone who understood the boundaries of responsible journalism. He suspected that other newspaper editors were probably considering the same approach.

As for Mr. Smith, he felt genuine regret. Given his credentials, he could easily secure a role at a mid-sized newspaper. His only wish was that he would show more caution in the future.

With a wry sigh, Mr. Bonnie took out his pen and began to formulate the contents of the apology.

The news that had graced the pages just two days ago was now being publicly retracted and apologized for on the third day. This swift reversal left the public stunned. Coupled with the subsequent statements from Luc Besson and Angela Mason released the same day, the rumors were promptly quashed and quickly faded from memory.

Only a few astute observers noticed the peculiar elements: the remarkably short interval between the two apologies and the omission of the public apology of the《Los Angeles Evening News》in Luc Besson's statement, in contrast to Angela Mason's lavish praise.

By now, of course, everything was settled. It was just one of many erroneous reports. Even the《Los Angeles Evening News》could falter, right?

Therefore, there was no need to investigate the intricacies behind the scenes. This world continued in its harmonious and authoritative stride.
