Chapter 15: Julia Roberts

"We are going to the Parage Hotel now. The 'The Parent Trap' film crew will start your first scene there, which will take about three to four days. Then we will leave and return to Mr. Spielberg's 'Captain Hawk' crew for a week of shooting. After that, we'll go to the vineyards in Napa Valley to continue filming 'The Parent Trap' until we finish in London. Finally, we'll return to Los Angeles for the 'Captain Hawk' crew. That's the schedule from today until the end of next month," Maggie Andrews said as she flipped through the documents in her hand. She looked at the beautiful woman sitting next to her with some concern and asked, "Are you listening, Julia?"

"Huh? What?" The woman, who had been gazing out of the car window, turned her head and smiled slightly. "I got it, Maggie."

At first glance, this woman, with her distinct charm, may not seem much different from other beautiful women. But with a closer look, one would notice her unique allure, especially those sensual lips that would make any man's imagination wander when pursed together. Although she was smiling at the moment, there always seemed to be a hint of melancholy between her brows.

"Listen, Julia, you don't have to pay attention to the criticism from the 'Captain Hawk' crew. That's just how Hollywood is. When you're successful, they'll flock to you, but when you face failure, they'll immediately turn a cold shoulder," Maggie sighed. "I've already talked to Mr. Spielberg, and he guarantees that there won't be any similar incidents on the set in the future."

"Alright, Maggie, I'm fine. I have no problems. I don't care about those things. I believe that as long as I deliver good work, I can shut up those people," the woman paused for a moment and then said with an uncertain tone, "But... why did I choose to take on a film like 'The Parent Trap'?"

"What's wrong?" Maggie asked, puzzled. "You agreed when Ms. Meyers extended the invitation—what's the issue?"

"It's not... but... I just thought that maybe taking on a different type of role... would be more beneficial for me," the woman shook her head. She continued, her voice filled with contemplation, "I've been doing similar characters for years, and while they have brought me success, I can't help but wonder if I'm limiting myself creatively. Maybe it's time for a change, to challenge myself and explore new territories as an actress."

Maggie listened intently, understanding the underlying dilemma. She nodded sympathetically and said, "I understand your concerns, Julie. It's natural for actors to seek variety and growth in their roles. 'The Parent Trap' might not be a departure from your usual characters, but remember, it's a stepping stone. It can still open doors for different opportunities in the future. Sometimes, it's about building a solid foundation and expanding from there."

Julia contemplated Maggie's words, a mixture of determination and uncertainty crossing her face. Deep down, she knew that taking on this film was a strategic move, a way to showcase her talent and gain recognition in the industry. She smiled, a glimmer of excitement in her eyes, and said, "You're right, Maggie. I shouldn't underestimate the power of this film. I'll give it my all and make the most of this opportunity. Who knows what doors it might open for me?"

Maggie sighed inwardly, her concern for Julia's reputation evident in her thoughts. She couldn't believe that one film's failure had tarnished Julia Roberts' standing in Hollywood, even after winning prestigious awards just a year ago. Could one misstep really overshadow years of hard work and success?

"Listen, Julia, try not to put too much pressure on yourself, okay? I have faith that you will prove everyone wrong. But for now, it might be better to choose roles that have guaranteed box office success," Maggie said, her tone tinged with a touch of helplessness. Julia smiled, feeling a sense of relief.

"You're right, I've been overthinking it," Julia replied with a grateful smile. "I won't let myself be easily defeated. Besides, this is my first time portraying a mother on screen. Thank you for your concern, Maggie."

"I'm glad you can see it that way," Maggie responded, making an exaggerated expression of relief. "You know, if you were to break the contract, I'd lose 15% of my commission. I don't want any financial troubles, you see."

Laughter filled the car as they shared a moment of levity. Just then, the driver's voice interrupted their conversation, announcing their arrival at the Parage Hotel.

"We have arrived at the Parage Hotel, Miss Roberts and Miss Andrews," the driver informed them.

The Parage Hotel stood at the bend of Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, its curved shape giving it a distinct appearance. While the exterior seemed ordinary, the interior boasted luxurious accommodations with various styles. Being close to Hollywood, the hotel often served as a popular location for film shoots.

"Welcome, Miss Roberts and Miss Andrews." A middle-aged woman was already waiting for them as the car pulled up to the hotel.

"Hello, Ms. Meyers, it's a pleasure to meet you," Julia and Maggie greeted Nancy in unison, extending their hands almost simultaneously.

"Oh, I wish I had two right hands," Nancy said with a smile, shaking their hands one by one. "Please, call me Nancy."

"You're right on time, Miss Roberts. We can start shooting now, so we won't keep the hotel manager complaining about us blocking the lane without any action," Nancy said, her smile welcoming as she led the way into the hotel.

"It's not surprising, Nancy. The person in charge of public places is just like a director, always hoping that we can start shooting as quickly as possible and finish just as swiftly," Julia commented as she walked alongside Nancy. Before they reached the film crew, a loud voice caught their attention.

"No, no, no, Mr. Phineas, I'm sure you hid it here. I saw it. You can't deny it. Do you want to go back on your word with a little girl like me?" The cheerful and lively voice belonged to a beautiful little girl who was animatedly speaking to the cameraman, a camera hanging from her chest. With golden-brown long hair and bright emerald-green eyes that seemed to speak, she exuded a captivating charm. Despite her elegant beige coat and skirt, her actions were anything but ladylike.

"Isn't she an adorable girl?" Nancy noticed Julia's gaze and playfully teased, "That's your daughter."

"My daughter?" Julia blinked, momentarily puzzled. But then she caught on to what Nancy meant and couldn't help but smile. "She's truly delightful. I really like her."

She hesitated for a moment before asking, "Although it may be impolite to ask, but I'm curious about how she's adapting to the environment..."

"I guarantee it will surprise you," a male voice interjected, drawing Julia's attention toward him. The newcomer smiled slightly and extended his hand. "Pleasure to see you again, Miss Roberts. I'm Alan Buck, now your butler."

"Mr. Buck? It's wonderful to see you again," Julia exclaimed with delight, embracing him. "I remember the last time we worked together was in 1988 for 'The Mysterious Pie.'"

"Yes, indeed. Since then, the young lady has become a big star, while I remain an inconspicuous minor character," Mr. Buck responded, feigning a pitiful look that brought about a comical effect. Dressed in a hippie style as required for his role, it inevitably elicited laughter from the ladies.

"Well, Mr. Minor Character Butler, what is this surprise you mentioned?" Julia asked with a smile. However, before Alan could respond, an exclamation interrupted, "Wow! That's elder sister!" [Note: She exclaims, 那是大嘴姐姐, I found it difficult to accurately translate so I just stuck with "elder/eldest sister"]

Although it wasn't the first or the last time someone referred to her as Elder Sister, the sheer delight carried in this designation inexplicably brought her a profound sense of happiness. Before she could utter a word, a petite figure had already scampered towards her, fixating her bright emerald eyes on her without a single blink.

"Hello... I'm Julia Roberts. And who might you be?" Julia found herself compelled to initiate the conversation, feeling both entertained and puzzled by the adorable little girl's unwavering gaze.

As if jolted back to reality, the rosy-cheeked girl blushed and suddenly recollected something. She darted back into the crowd, calling out, "Jessie! Jessie! Bring me what I prepared!"

Within moments, she returned accompanied by another endearing little girl, slightly out of breath, presenting Julia with a beautifully crafted notebook. "Miss... oh, Miss Roberts, my name is Angela, Angela Mason. I absolutely adore your movies, so, could you please grace me with your autograph?"

Observing the tiny droplets of sweat on Angela's forehead, Julia was suddenly moved. She smiled, opened the notebook, and took the pen Maggie handed her, swiftly inscribing: Angela, may your life be eternally free from troubles. Sincerely, Julia Roberts.

"Here you go." Julia returned the notebook to her. The other little girl also extended a notebook towards her. She appeared somewhat bashful but still managed to utter with a blush on her face, "Miss Roberts, I'm Jessica Alba. Could you please sign this for me as well?"

Since she had already autographed one, Julia didn't mind signing another. Besides, she had never turned down an autograph request. However, this single signature triggered a minor commotion. Ever since their arrival at the hotel entrance, fans who recognized her had been gradually congregating in small clusters nearby. Assuming a film was being shot there, they refrained from rushing over to seek autographs. But when they witnessed the two little girls receiving signatures, the enthusiastic fans promptly followed suit. After all, Julia Roberts had earned the People's Choice Award for Favorite Movie Actress.

Fortunately, the minor chaos was swiftly brought under control by the film crew. After spending several minutes signing for the fans, Julia finally settled into a chair, awaiting the makeup artist's touch to prepare for filming. Just then, a voice emanated from the entrance.

"Miss Mason, you can't disturb Miss Roberts. She's getting her makeup done."

"I know, I know. I just want to take a quick peek. I won't go inside."

"You promise?"

"Yes, I promise!"

"It's still not acceptable. Your promises have always been unreliable."

"Oh, come on, Mr. Rex. You're really breaking my heart."

"Fine, but Miss Alba has to guarantee."

"Me... me?"

"Yes, I'd rather trust you than Miss Mason."

"Well, Jessie, you have to make the promise. Although he has hurt my tender heart, I won't hold it against him before that!"

Such a lovely girl. Julia really wanted to turn around and take a look, but the makeup artist had already started applying powder to her face, so she could only listen with her ear turned.

"It's a pity that I'm wearing the crew's clothes. Otherwise, I would have Eldest Sister sign on my clothes."

"Why should I sign your clothes, Angela?"

"That way, this outfit would have a high collectible value, especially after Eldest Sister wins the Best Actress Oscar. Hmm, maybe I should prepare two outfits. I'll get one signed before Eldest Sister wins the award, and another one after she wins!"

"Are you so sure that Elder Sister will win the Best Actress Oscar?"

"Of course, Elder Sister is not like you, who has no ambition, Jessie!"

"Give it a rest, Angela. I'd rather not do anything than be like you!"

Listening to their conversation, Julia couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. Every actor has an Oscar dream, and she is no exception. But after the disastrous failure of "The Dying Young" and the cold remarks from the "Captain Hawk" crew, she didn't dare to think about it anymore. Now, a girl who hasn't even grown up is confidently claiming that she will successfully win that little golden statue. Even if it's just childish talk, it provides her with considerable comfort.

Such an interesting little girl. A faint smile appeared on Julia's lips as she suddenly remembered Mr. Buck's words. So, Angela, what other surprises do you have in store for me?

[T/N: While translating the mentioned movie names I first got "Captain Hawk"[霍克船长] from this, naturally the author refers to Captain Hook. I was uncertain if the author actually means the real movie Hook or just renamed it to Captain Hawk for comedic purposes, so I just went with the latter. Keep in mind it's a fictional novel, so even though real names from real actors are used, the plot might be different from reality.]
