Chapter 30: Deadly Punishment

In the blink of an eye, over a month had passed since their return from Niagara Falls. Elena considered the simple family trip to the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls a success, as her daughter seemed much happier.

But for Angela herself, life had simply returned to its original course, like...

"...like morning dew, fleeting and bitter, lamentations should be heartfelt, sorrows hard to forget..." Angela shook her head and recited a line from Cao Cao's "A Short Song" in Chinese to Jessica, who sat on the beach, looking at her with a mix of helplessness and amusement.

Growing increasingly frustrated, Jessica stood up and approached Angela, placing her hands on her hips as she stared at the little girl. "I have to admit, my imagination is lacking right now, Angela. Can you please tell me why you brought me to this deserted beach and what you're trying to say?"

"Do you... not understand?" Angela blinked innocently.

"I understand that you recited something in French and then in Chinese, but I don't understand those languages, okay?!" Jessica exclaimed, clearly annoyed.

"Alright, let me explain. The first one I recited in French was Chapter 8, Verse 12 of 'Hamlet.' And then in Chinese..." Angela began explaining, but Jessica interrupted her, making a pause gesture. "Wait, wait, Angela, I'm asking you what you want to say, not for an explanation of things I don't understand."

Angela furrowed her brow, perplexed as to why her usual tactic of diverting Jessica's attention with random topics and casual chitchat wasn't having the desired effect. In the past, whenever Jessica was upset, engaging her in conversation about unrelated matters would often lead her to inquire about the origins of those topics, effectively dissipating any lingering resentment.

However, she knew deep down why it wasn't working this time. But if she wanted to find a topic to talk about, how could she keep her mind blank?

"Well, Jessica... what I wanted to say is that... ever since I returned from London, something hasn't felt quite right. So... I wanted to apologize." The little one struggled to find the right words as if apologizing had never been this difficult before.

"Apologize? Why?" Jessica, on the other hand, widened her innocent eyes and asked.

Angela opened her mouth to respond but found herself at a loss for words. She simply stared at Jessica, taken aback. Unexpectedly, Jessica burst into laughter, pointing at the little girl and laughing wholeheartedly. "Angela, you look so funny right now!"

Realizing she had been tricked, Angela's anger flared up, and she lunged at Jessica with her claws outstretched. Jessica let out a surprised yelp and turned to run, but Angela was relentless. She immediately chased after her, howling and indicating that she wouldn't stop unless she caught her.

Jessica laughed as she evaded Angela on the beach, but her stamina couldn't match Angela's.

After a few dozen meters, Jessica was about to be caught. Suddenly, she made a sharp turn and ran toward the sea. Taking a few steps, she turned around, raised both hands and splashed a large amount of seawater towards Angela.

Although Angela had initially distanced herself from Jessica after the sudden turn, she quickly adjusted her direction and charged toward Jessica again. However, she didn't anticipate that Jessica would turn around and splash seawater at her. With a splash, Angela was drenched from head to toe.

"Jessica!" Angela screamed in anger. In all their time spent together, she had never been pranked like this by Jessica. The little girl immediately bent down, raised her hand, and retaliated by splashing a large amount of seawater back at Jessica.

The two little girls played and splashed water at each other in the shallow waters of the beach, accompanied by laughter. At first, they tried to avoid each other's splashes, but as their clothes grew wetter, they didn't care anymore and continued pouring water on each other until they ran out of energy. They both sat down in the water, looking at each other, and couldn't help but burst into laughter.

"Okay, Angela, I've forgotten about it now, so we're still good friends, right?" Jessica rested for a while, stood up despite still being wet, and walked up to Angela, placing her hands on her hips.

But Angela didn't respond. Her face turned red, and she occasionally glanced at Jessica and quickly turned her head away. Jessica couldn't understand why. Of course, she didn't realize how terrifying the image of a little girl who hadn't reached the age of wearing a bra, wearing thin clothes, and being drenched in water, could be to certain people.

"Angela, what's wrong?" Jessica sat back in the water, grabbed Angela's shoulders, and tried to get a clear look at her.

"Don't worry, I'm fine." Angela, with her flushed face, finally met Jessica's gaze. But before she could say anything further, Jessica leaned closer, and her soft and wet lips made contact.

"This is your punishment for abandoning me earlier!" Jessica pulled back, muttering, but she quickly noticed something was off with Angela. Angela was staring at her, seemingly unfocused, and her rosy cheeks looked like they were about to drip with water.

"Angela, what's wrong with you now?" Jessica was taken aback and immediately started shaking her shoulders.

"Okay, okay, I'm fine!" Angela, startled by the shaking, swiftly grabbed Jessica's hand and coincidentally sneezed. "See, I just caught a chill. Let's hurry back. Your dad is probably getting worried."

Upon hearing this, Jessica also felt the cold sensation on her clothes as the wind blew, despite it being summer. Realizing the importance of avoiding catching a cold, she nodded and stood up, leading the way towards the beach road.

Angela also stood up but deliberately slowed down, avoiding looking directly at Jessica's front. However, she couldn't help but notice the gentle sway of Jessica's exposed back and little buttocks in front of her. Taking a deep breath, Angela tried to calm herself down. It was truly a test of her self-control!

...

Although most summers can be monotonous, occasionally interesting things happen. This was one of those moments when Angela stepped out of the dubbing studio and curiously glanced around the interior of the film company.

"Hi, darling, what has caught your attention?" Julia asked with a smile as she emerged from the studio alongside Angela.

"I've never been inside a film company before," the little girl replied, her gaze drawn to a figure inside a room through a crack in the wooden door. Nancy was busy working there.

"That's the editing room. The editors have to edit the film according to the producer's requirements, so Nancy has to stay there," George's voice sounded as he walked over and greeted Julia and the little one.

Angela shrugged and remained silent. Ever since Sparrow informed her that Disney wanted her to take time off for post-production and offered triple the salary to ensure the film's release at the end of August during the summer season, she understood that Nancy would be occupied with work.

"Disney is truly wealthy", the little girl murmured to herself.

While she wasn't concerned about the film's box office sales—the original "The Parent Trap" had already grossed over 60 million dollars in the United States alone, and with Julia and Meg starring in this version, the box office was sure to soar—she couldn't help but be in awe of Disney's grandeur. However, she also understood the importance of releasing the film at the end of August. It needed to be rated G, and premiering during holidays would attract a smaller audience.

The second half of the year had three major holidays: Halloween, Christmas, and New Year's, none of which were suitable for this heartwarming summer-themed film. While they could consider a release in March or April of the following year, Disney clearly had other plans in mind.

What a magnificent gesture, Angela sighed inwardly, and then George's voice reached her ears once more, "Hello, Miss Mason."

He stood before her, wearing a pleasant smile. "I hope you've been considering the matter from Napa Valley?"

"I have been considering it, Mr. Wells. I will inform you once I have made a decision," Angela replied. It wasn't an excuse; ever since she met that girl named Avril at Niagara Falls, she had been pondering her next steps. The little girl had been so attached to her that even when Angela was about to board the boat, Avril clung onto her and continued talking. If her parents hadn't come looking for her, Angela might have ended up traveling to the United States with her. However, the little girl's words had left a lasting impression on her, "You should release an album. How will people know about the beautiful songs you've written if you don't release them? Beautiful songs should be shared for everyone to hear."

Just like the movie she was currently writing, "Sleepless in Seattle," Angela contemplated the importance of sharing her music with a wider audience. Many people had already heard her songs, but it would be even better to reach more ears. Who knew if she would continue to write those songs in the coming years? However, she found herself torn about how to release these few compositions.

Should she release them as her own album or consider selling them to Disney for someone else to sing?

"Oh, by the way, Miss Mason, Nancy asked me to inquire about the progress of your new script," George mentioned at that moment.

Angela cast a quick glance at him. She had posed the same question yesterday while doing voice-over work with her sister Meg, so it was only natural for Nancy to inquire as well. After all, they had all gone through portions of the script and had a keen eye for its development. With a nonchalant shrug, she replied, "Don't worry, I'll have it revised and sent to you by the end of this month. However..."

She shifted the topic and added, "I do hope that the actors for the male and female leads will be chosen based on my suggestions."

George frowned, "I know about the female lead, it's written for Meg, and from the parts of the script I've read, I think she's suitable. But the male lead..."

"Don't worry," Angela interrupted, blinking her eyes, "Let's discuss that issue after I finish writing it." She didn't want to break up the movie couple Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

George hesitated for a moment, sensing that it wasn't the right time to discuss the casting. He knew they could address it later once Angela finished writing the script. Just then, Julia, who was engaged in a conversation with her agent, approached them.

"Hey, Angela, I have to step out for something," Julia informed her.

"Of course, good luck," Angela replied, giving her a warm hug. As Julia turned to leave, she accidentally dropped a postcard from her hand.

Reacting quickly, Angela caught the falling postcard and intended to hand it back to Julia. However, when she glanced at the handwriting on the postcard, she froze. The distinctive handwriting could belong to no one else but her scrupulous uncle!
