Chapter 41: Warner Bros. Calls

Even in November, Los Angeles boasts a pleasant temperature. Despite its higher latitude, the city is influenced by the warm Pacific current, which contributes to its typical Mediterranean climate.

Even during the coldest months of January and February, temperatures rarely dip below 7-8 degrees Celsius. Consequently, the relatively warm weather makes it an ideal setting for leisurely sleep-ins and lazy days.

However, today, despite being a Sunday, Angela couldn't indulge in a leisurely slumber. She found herself with a plethora of letters to respond to, and they had all seemingly arrived simultaneously.

Yesterday alone, Angela received a substantial number of letters from various correspondents, including Kate, Avril, her uncle, her aunt, and even Edward and Lindsay.

The letters from the others were generally positive. Kate had landed a small role in a film being shot on a movie set in the UK, and to Angela's envy, the lead actress in that very film happened to be Catherine Zeta-Jones.

This marked Kate's official entry into the entertainment industry, a mix of excitement and apprehension for her. She had finally set foot on the path of acting, yet there lingered an underlying sense of worry—an indescribable feeling that even the little girl herself couldn't quite put into words.

Avril shared an exciting update with Angela—she revealed that one of her uncles had returned from New York bearing a record. While the album's introduction was modest, lacking any accompanying photographs, Avril deduced from the song titled《Complicated》and the initials of the lyricists and composers of the other three tracks that they spelled out Angela's name.

Avril expressed her genuine admiration for these three songs and expressed a heartfelt desire for Angela to visit Canada during the winter break or any other holiday, in the hopes that Angela could provide her guidance if possible.

In her uncle's letter, he commended Angela's acting abilities but made no mention of the incident involving her talkative Sister. Angela didn't dwell on it and instead concentrated on the closing lines of the letter.

Her uncle kindly reminded her that their grandfather had specifically gone to the cinema to watch Angela's movie, yet hadn't mentioned anything about it upon his return. This cautionary note served as a gentle reminder for Angela to exercise care.

Regarding the other aunts, uncles, and relatives, they all inquired about her movie. "Damn it," Angela thought to herself, "shouldn't they be asking Dad?"

Edward's letters left Angela at a loss for words. She regretted ever sharing her address with him in the first place. The frequency of his letters, twice a week, didn't compensate for the lack of substantial content and empty words. Angela found herself uninterested in the topics he discussed, causing her a headache.

Despite a slight improvement in his writing mistakes after a few exchanges, his grammar remained atrocious. Were it not for the sake of politeness, she wouldn't have entertained the idea of responding to his letters. After all, Angela had no interest in Shotacon whatsoever!

In the presence of Lindsay, Angela's emotions became significantly more complex. As previously mentioned, what could be more absurd than the original protagonist standing before you and expressing appreciation for your interpretation of the character that was once theirs?

It was akin to a scenario where someone from another world appeared and acted in "The Matrix," only for Keanu Reeves himself to commend their portrayal of Neo. Such a situation would undoubtedly be surreal!

Moreover, considering the unexpected kiss they shared on Halloween night, Angela couldn't help but experience a peculiar sensation in her heart. It wasn't dislike, yet it wasn't exactly fondness either.

She struggled to articulate this unique sentiment, perhaps best described as anticipation. Its nature remained elusive, shrouded in uncertainty.

Angela let out a sigh and made the decision to begin writing letters to the others first. The little girl had a penchant for promptly responding to letters upon receiving them, believing it to be a sign of respect for the sender.

After all, physical mail took a considerable amount of time to travel, particularly over long distances. She couldn't help but imagine the convenience if the internet were more widespread at present. Sending emails would be significantly faster and more efficient.

When it came to Kate, Angela not only sent her warm wishes but also found herself concerned for her well-being. If it were feasible, Angela would even draft a set of guidelines for Kate to follow, ensuring she avoids any missteps. However, Angela recognized the impossibility of such a task.

In regards to Avril, there wasn't much to mention beyond words of encouragement.

Empty promises like "I will definitely come" were merely empty gestures. Nevertheless, this time, the little girl didn't intend to make hollow commitments.

Considering Lindsay's unexpected presence, Angela found herself harboring suspicions. Perhaps, during the winter break, she should genuinely consider visiting Canada.

Regarding her uncle, since he didn't mention anything specific, Angela decided not to inquire further.

However, she did notice that big talkative Sister had shed the label of being a box office poison due to the impressive sales of《The Parent Trap.》While her reviews hadn't completely rebounded, Angela remained optimistic that it was only a matter of time before they did.

For now, Angela decided to withhold her replies to Edward's letters. She recognized the importance of engaging in a thoughtful and open conversation with him. It seemed that in some cliché novels, failing to address issues head-on often led to significant complications.

Responding to Lindsay posed a challenge as well. On one hand, the little girl desired to limit her interactions with her. Lindsay's reputation in her past life had been abysmal, and there was a distinct possibility that she had been a drug abuser.

Who knew if Lindsay would attempt to ensnare Jessica as well? However, in the presence of Lindsay, Angela couldn't help but experience an inexplicable sense of guilt, alongside an unusual undercurrent of anticipation.

When did writing letters become such a vexing task? Angela furrowed her brow, lightly tapping her head with a pen, unsure of how to begin.

Just then, a knock echoed, and Jennifer appeared at the door. "Little one, Nancy is on the phone for you."

"Nancy's call?" Angela turned around, her surprise evident. "Did she mention what it's about?"

Jennifer simply shrugged, indicating her lack of knowledge. After a brief moment of contemplation, the little girl stood up and made her way downstairs to answer the phone.

"Hey, Nancy, what's up? Is there an issue with the script?" Angela playfully greeted, picking up the receiver.

"Of course not, dear," Nancy's laughter resonated from the other end. "I have some fantastic news. Mr. Hanks has read the script and accepted the offer."

"Congratulations." If Angela hadn't been at home, she would have been tempted to whistle in excitement. She held an unwavering faith in the pairing of Hanks and Meg Ryan. "Good news often comes with a catch. Let me guess, Disney wants you to commence filming immediately?"

"Yes, they're like sharks. As soon as they smell blood, they'll rush over," Nancy teased. "They even requested the film to be released on February 14th."

"Wow," the little girl exclaimed, taken aback. "Are they attempting to triple the salary again this time?"

"Compared to their gains, that's just a small portion," Nancy's nonchalant response came through the phone before she changed the subject. "By the way, Angela, I wanted to ask you something. Did you happen to send a script to Warner Bros.?"

Warner Bros.? A script? Angela pondered for a moment.

Ah, it must be the script for《Hide and Seek.》She couldn't recall which film company's address she had written on the envelope, but if it ended up at Warner Bros., that would be fine. The little girl hesitated and inquired, "What's the matter, Nancy?"

"Paul Tucker, the vice president of production at Warner Bros., reached out to me. He is eager to confirm whether the semi-novel-style script titled《Hide and Seek.》in his possession is indeed the creation of the brilliant young mind, Angela Mason."

"Why would he come to such a conclusion?" The little girl's interest was piqued.

"Well, firstly, he believes that this exquisitely delicate handwriting couldn't possibly belong to a man. Secondly, the script offers a profound analysis of the young girl's character, with specific annotations in certain sections. Thirdly, Hollywood has recently witnessed the emergence of a prodigious young talent. And lastly, there is your signature in the bottom right corner of the final page."

Angela rolled her eyes playfully. "Are you referring to the Sherlock Holmes and the cab driver's story, Nancy?"

Nancy laughed, her amusement audible through the phone. "Oh, no, dear. I'm talking about something far more intriguing. If it weren't for Mr. Eisner promoting you at the party, Mr. Tucker might not have even noticed your signature."

"So he sought you out to reach me?"

"Yes, and what do you think? Are you open to speaking with him?"

Angela pondered for a moment. There didn't seem to be much cause for concern regarding the《Hide and Seek.》script. Since she had accidentally sent it out, it wouldn't hurt to sell it to Warner Bros. Thus, she nodded and replied, "Alright, Nancy, ask him if he can come to our house now."

"I'm certain he'd be more than happy to come. Well then, goodbye."

"Goodbye, Nancy." The little girl ended the call, shrugged her shoulders, and sought out Jennifer. "Aunt Jennifer, do you know where Mom and Dad are? Are they out?"

"Yes," Jennifer, who was in the midst of cleaning, nodded.

"Could you tell me where they went?" Angela inquired once more.

"I'm sorry, little one, your dad insisted it's a surprise," Jennifer replied, her smile gentle.

"A surprise, huh? Feels like when I was two or three years old," the little girl muttered, pursing her lips. After a brief moment of contemplation in the living room, she retrieved her phone and dialed a familiar number. Soon enough, someone picked up on the other end. "Hey, Uncle Sparrow, how have you been?"

"Hello, Angela. How can I assist you today?" Jack's warm laughter resonated over the phone.

"Well, dear Uncle Sparrow, I actually sent a script to Warner Bros. some time ago, and now they're interested in acquiring it. There's a possibility they may visit my house later. If it's not too much trouble, could you please come and lend me a hand?" Angela couldn't help but feel a tad sheepish as she made the request. After all, it was Sunday, and she didn't want to intrude on his free time.

Sparrow didn't mind at all and readily agreed, "Of course, I'll be there shortly."

After ending the call, the little girl shrugged her shoulders. Was there anything else she needed to prepare? Probably not. However, she couldn't ignore the fact that the《Hide and Seek.》script in Warner Bros.' possession had a semi-novel style. Even if they were eager to purchase it, she would have to rework it into a complete script.

At that moment, the script for《Leon: The Professional》came to mind, casting a shadow of doubt.

What if that script also bore her unintentional signature? Angela scratched her head in frustration. She resolved to go upstairs and write a letter to Lindsay. That way, she could set aside some of her concerns, at least for the time being.

However, not long after, Jennifer returned upstairs. "Dear, there's a visitor."

Angela, who had momentarily set aside her writing, set down her pen. "A visitor? Who is it? Mr. Sparrow or someone from the film company?"

"Neither. It's a surprise," Jennifer responded with a beaming smile.

"A surprise, huh?" The little girl shrugged and made her way downstairs.

Just as she reached the staircase, a familiar voice reached her ears. "You know, Mr. Old Kleist actually adores your movies, even if he doesn't say it outright. I always thought your father was being stubborn."

Could it be?! Angela's mouth dropped open, and she raced downstairs.

On the expansive sofa in the center of the living room sat a man in his thirties, his arm dramatically draped over the backrest as he laughed and conversed. It was none other than her godfather, Brian Benjamin—a dear friend of Jared!
