Chapter 58: A Painful Problem

"Grandma, I apologize, but I won't be able to have dinner at your place. I need to return to California as soon as possible. There's something important I need to take care of. I'm truly sorry... Alright, I understand. I love you."

Angela heaved a sigh and hung up the phone. Her gaze wandered across the vibrant streets of New York before she turned to Brian, proposing, "Why don't we make our way to Seventh Avenue and pick up Mr. Avner? Grandma needs him to perform a thorough physical examination on Grandpa."

"Sure, let's go," Brian responded, steering the car toward Seventh Avenue.

Upon their arrival, Mr. Avner was already waiting there equipped with everything he needed.

"I apologize for inconveniencing you with the pickup. My car has been in the repair shop, and it's taking longer than expected. Their efficiency is quite disappointing," Mr. Avner explained while placing his equipment in the trunk.

"No problem, it's conveniently on our way," Brian replied with a smile, offering his assistance.

"Yeah, I'm also curious to know about Grandpa's recent health condition," Angela added.

"Don't worry, Angela. Mr. Kleist is doing quite well. It's just that with age, minor ailments tend to appear. Mrs. Sarah wanted me to conduct the check-up as a precautionary measure. It's nothing serious," Mr. Avner reassured, shrugging his shoulders. He settled into the passenger seat, fastening his seatbelt.

Suddenly, he remembered something and said, "Mr. Brian, could I trouble you once more? My daughter is currently at her mother's studio, which is just two blocks away from here. I need to pick her up and take her home. The New Year vacation is coming to an end, and she needs to get ready."

"Of course, no problem," Brian replied, nodding and started the car. Angela leaned over with interest and remarked, "Mr. Avner, it seems like I've never had the chance to meet your daughter before."

"Is that so?" Mr. Avner pondered for a moment. "Perhaps you didn't have the chance to meet her when I brought her to visit Mr. Kleist. However, I did bring her on Christmas Eve."

"Oh, on that day, I was in a rush to take Grandpa home, so I didn't pay much attention. I think I only caught a glimpse of her from a distance," Angela sighed. "What's her name? And how old is she?"

"She's a year younger than you, and her name is..." Mr. Avner reached for his wallet, intending to show Angela a photo of his daughter. But then he stopped and smiled, saying, "Well, you'll meet her soon enough. You can introduce yourselves when the time comes."

Angela rolled her eyes and leaned back. Fine, she would meet Mr. Avner's daughter whenever that happened. After all, her main curiosity was whether Mr. Avner's daughter, since she lived on Long Island, might know anything about a girl named Natalie. Of course, the chances were uncertain.

They swiftly traveled along the two streets, and as soon as the car came to a halt, Mr. Avner's wife emerged, accompanied by their daughter. The little girl exuded charm with her luscious curls of brown hair and delicate facial features. Her oval-shaped face possessed a subtle angularity, giving her an air of innocence blended with a hint of determination.

"Hi, Nat, my darling," Mr. Avner greeted his daughter with a warm embrace, followed by a gentle kiss on his wife's cheek.

"Alright, dear, please give my regards to Mr. Kleist," his wife replied with a smile.

"Will do. Just remember to come back early. I can't handle making pies on my own," Mr. Avner jokingly reminded her. Holding his daughter's hand, he climbed into the car, taking his usual spot in the passenger seat, while Natalie settled in the back seat beside Angela.

"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Natalie Hersh..." Natalie began to introduce herself, closing the car door and setting down her backpack. However, as soon as she turned her head, an inexplicable sensation overcame her, causing her words to be stuck in her throat.

Angela's unblinking gaze locked onto her, and in an instant, it felt as if a fire had ignited within Angela's emerald green eyes. In the midst of those blazing flames, Natalie felt utterly exposed, as if her clothes had been incinerated to ashes.

Instinctively, she clutched her backpack tightly against her chest, seeking protection from this unfamiliar stare. A mix of shame and anger coursed through her, but there was no revulsion or hatred. Her heart raced relentlessly.

"Are you both alright?" Mr. Avner's voice broke the tension. He noticed that the two children seemed unsettled and swiftly turned his head to inquire.

Angela snapped out of her daze as if awakening from a dream and hastily averted her gaze, stuttering, "I... I'm sorry, I got lost in thought... lost in thought."

"Are you sure you're alright?" Mr. Avner asked, sensing that something was amiss with Angela, given his background as a doctor.

However, Brian intervened, diffusing the situation, "Don't worry about her, Mr. Avner. Angela tends to get lost in her own world from time to time. But when she snaps out of it, she comes up with the most unexpected and imaginative ideas, catching everyone off guard."

"Indeed, kids can be like that," Mr. Avner acknowledged, feeling a sense of relief and deciding to go along with Brian's explanation. He shrugged, dismissing any lingering suspicions.

Angela, who had turned her head, let out a sigh of relief. She stole a quick glance at the girl beside her but immediately averted her gaze when their eyes met.

"You... hello, Natalie, I'm... I'm..." Angela started, her voice still uncertain.

"Ang... Angela Mason, I... I know," Natalie stammered in response. Even though the strange feeling had faded as Angela regained her composure, Natalie found herself instinctively clutching her backpack, a lingering trace of fear still present within her.
"You... you know?" Angela raised her head in astonishment but quickly looked away.

"Yes, I... I watched《The Parent Trap.》It was... it was an interesting movie," Natalie replied, her voice subdued as she lowered her head.

A prolonged silence ensued, with both girls intermittently stealing glances at each other, only to avert their eyes before the other noticed. This continued until they arrived at Natalie's home. As Natalie stepped out of the car, Angela mustered up the courage and called out, "Natalie!"

Natalie turned around, wearing a puzzled expression.

"If... if it's possible... I mean..." Angela began, hesitating for a moment before forcing a smile and saying, "I mean, it was nice to meet you."

"Yeah... same here," Natalie replied with a smile.

Angela waved goodbye before sinking back into her seat, leaving the two perplexed adults to exchange bewildered looks.

After a few more blocks, the car came to a stop in front of Grandpa's mansion. Before the vehicle had even fully halted, Angela darted out and sprinted toward the house. Brian urgently called after her, "Hey, Chris, we need to go to the airport. Your mom wants you to return immediately."

However, Angela paid no attention and frantically knocked on the door. Thomas, the butler, swiftly opened it, only to be taken aback by the sudden appearance of the young girl. This unexpected entrance startled Grandpa, Grandma, and Uncle Dean, leaving them momentarily speechless.

"Dear, what happened?" Grandma was the first to inquire, concern etched across her face.

"Grandma, I need to go to my room. Please, don't disturb me before dinner. I beg you," Angela pleaded sorrowfully, turning sideways and hastily making her way upstairs, leaving the three of them bewildered.

Unconcerned by their confusion, Angela burst into her room and forcefully slammed the door shut. She flung her backpack onto the floor and stood beside her bed, gasping for air. Despite the mattress providing a slight bounce, her nose still felt sore from being pressed against it.

However, Angela had little capacity to dwell on such discomfort. Her eyes remained fixed ahead as her mind became consumed by thoughts of her encounter with Natalie.

Why? In that moment, why did an uncontrollable desire to overpower her, to indulge... to indulge...

Oh, goodness, what's wrong with me? The young girl pressed the pillow tightly against her head. Am I going mad? Or turning into something perverse? How could I even entertain such thoughts?!

That feeling, it resembled the ones she had experienced with Jessica, Kate, Lindsay... with Avril... No! Absolutely not! I'm not like that! I am definitely not! I am not a pervert!

Angela flipped over, stood up, and hurriedly made her way to the bathroom.

Leaning on the sink with both hands, she glared fiercely at her reflection in the mirror, gritting her teeth and muttering, "Listen, you're not a pervert. You're not insane. You are Angela Mason, do you understand? Angela Christine Albert Mason! That's who you are, not someone else!"

She stared intently at her reflection, panting heavily. The peculiar trance-like expression on the young girl's face gradually dissipated. After a while, she composed herself, seemingly unaffected. Adjusting her clothes, Angela exited the bathroom and left her room.

Downstairs, Grandpa and Grandma furrowed their brows, questioning Brian, while Brian innocently raised his hands, signaling his ignorance. It wasn't until Dean called out, "The little one is coming down," that their attention shifted.

"I'm fine! Nothing happened!" Angela quickly raised her hand, wearing a mischievous smile, as if everything was perfectly ordinary.

"Oh my God, Chris, you really know how to mess with people. Mr. Kleist practically had a knife to my throat, demanding to know what happened," Brian exclaimed in an exaggerated manner.

"Alright, alright, I'll explain later. But first, please allow me to make two phone calls," Angela raised one finger and requested.

"We're not going to the airport?" The Godfather asked, his confusion evident in his tone.

"For now, I don't think we need to go," Angela pondered for a moment, revealing a hint of her intentions. "The first one is to call home and ask for Mr. Luc Besson's phone number And the second call is to Mr. Luc Besson himself. I want to invite him to New York for a discussion."

"To come to New York for a discussion?" Brian was perplexed, but Angela simply smiled and didn't offer an explanation. Instead, she turned to Grandma and inquired, "Grandma, will we be having Kung Pao Chicken tonight?"

[Note from the Author:

In recent chapters, there may be some moments of frustration. Realistic character transformations from male to female often involve significant challenges and hardships. Lin Hai once mentioned that if a story includes frustrating plotlines, it is best to update swiftly and unveil the burdens promptly. While I may not be the fastest at typing, I'll share a glimpse of what's to come.

Following the filming of "Hide and Seek," our dear protagonist will begin her transformation with the process being halfway complete after the first instance and fully realized thereafter. If you feel unsettled, please take your time and return to read when you're ready. Thank you for your understanding. Of course, getting married as a child is impossible!]
