Chapter 73: First Original Work

In the spacious conference room, chaos reigned as the heads of the marketing, planning, and sales departments argued vehemently, unable to convince each other.

John Burns, the music director, sat quietly on the side not saying a word. He had already expressed his opinions and it was up to the general manager, Richard Bruce, to make the final decision. John glanced at Richard, who sat at the head of the table appearing uncertain and lost in thought seemingly oblivious to the heated arguments in the room.

It was indeed a difficult problem, John thought to himself. The potential of that child was undeniable, but the conditions for this project were quite demanding. Nonetheless, the benefits of succeeding could be enormous. It all depended on Richard's decision, and from John's perspective, he hoped that the company would agree to proceed.

Suddenly, the meeting room's door was pushed open and the secretary appeared at the entrance, looking somewhat nervous. She addressed Richard, "Mr. Bruce, Mr. Eisner has arrived."

The once clamorous conference room immediately fell silent. In about two seconds, Richard jumped to his feet and said, "Tidy up the meeting room! Keep quiet, I'll go and greet Mr. Eisner."

The department heads quickly sprang into action, collecting scattered documents, disposing of cigarette ash and using paper to fan and spray air freshener.

Richard returned quickly, followed by the CEO of the parent company, Michael Eisner.

He walked to the head of the table where Richard sat, surveyed everyone in the room and then tapped the table, saying, "Gentlemen and ladies, I am disappointed. The request for Miss Mason's next EP has been on your hands for a few days now, and yet you are still debating it. Or do you plan to continue discussing it endlessly?"

The heads of the departments looked at each other and remained silent. A few seconds later, Richard, sitting beside Eisner spoke up, "I apologize, Mr. Chairman. We are currently at an impasse with one issue. Miss Mason insists that this EP must be purely instrumental. She will only sign a contract for a full album if the EP achieves the same sales figures as her last one. As you know, instrumental records do not sell as well as popular music records. Even a platinum-selling instrumental record is very rare, not to mention reaching five times platinum like her last EP. Additionally, due to her age she can only sign contracts one by one for each album, which is not favorable for the company."

Eisner clasped his hands together and nodded thoughtfully. After a moment of contemplation, he pointed to Sam Ritchie, the head of the marketing department, and said, "Mr. Ritchie, it's your turn. Speak your mind and don't leave out a single word."

Ritchie nodded and flipped open the documents in his hands, saying, "Mr. Chairman, the highest-selling instrumental record is three times platinum. Although we used various methods to elevate Miss Mason's popularity during the last EP release, it's still unlikely to achieve even one platinum with an instrumental EP. It's very possible that we might not even reach one platinum, let alone five."

Juliette Wright, the head of the sales department, agreed, "I concur with Ritchie's perspective. The audience for instrumental music is relatively niche. Despite Mason's substantial fan base from her previous EP, releasing an instrumental EP would likely result in a significant loss of fans, making the endeavor cost-prohibitive."

However, Ervin Wood, the head of the planning department, expressed his opposition, "I understand the concerns raised, but I believe we can work with Mason's mysterious aura and create an effective promotion strategy to achieve one platinum in sales. Let's have a discussion with Mason and explore possible solutions."

As the debate continued, Eisner listened attentively, carefully considering the various arguments put forth by the department heads.

The executives echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the limited audience for instrumental records and the potential risk of losing popularity if the release wasn't handled properly. The inability to secure a long-term contract with Miss Mason posed additional challenges, even if they reduced the sales target to one platinum. The uncertainty surrounding the outcome remained due to these complexities.

Eisner sighed and turned to the music director, John, seeking his input. "John, what's your take on this matter?"

"Mine?" John shrugged, "From my perspective, I would do whatever it takes to keep her! Her musical potential is unprecedented. Let me tell you, Mr. Eisner, have you ever seen an 11-year-old who can compose and write lyrics on her own? Moreover, I can assure you, Mr. Eisner, that Miss Mason's piano certification is at an amateur level 8, but in reality she should be at a professional level 8. She truly is a genius."

Eisner fell silent, reflecting on the results of his secret investigation into Angela and the report on the surprising ideas she had at her birthday party, provided by George Wells. Finally, he tapped the table lightly again and said, "Then, let's agree to her terms. Of course, we should aim for one platinum or even less."

He then turned to Richard and added, "Richard, if a similar situation arises in the future and you can't make a decision, report it to the headquarters immediately instead of making me rush over from Burbank!"

...

"The airship bound for Northrend is about to depart, and I find myself nervously wiping my weapon—not because of the impending fate, but because of this damn airship. Who knows when something made by goblins might explode? Hopefully not in the middle of the Endless Sea.

Most of my companions are making noise in the airship's bar, venting their emotions. Anders Hoofsplitter and Grim Ale, as usual, are drinking and competing against each other. Their pets, the polar bear Kumi and the lion Abang are playfully wrestling with each other just like their masters.

But they are still better than Ream Steelaxe and Derek Aquila, those two muscle-headed idiots. One is an orc, and the other is a human; who knows why they both love to settle things with arm wrestling? Do warriors always prefer this method?

In my room, there are three companions. One is the Night Elf, Alanndarian Nightsong. During our journey, her favorite thing to do is to enter the Emerald Dream, although, as a human, I admit I can't fully understand the meaning of the Emerald Dream. However, her habit of slacking off during the trip is quite exasperating.

The other is the Blood Elf, Tarian Dawnwind. In fact, he always keeps his distance from everyone whenever we rest. His reason is that he fears losing control of his addiction and draining the others dry. This practice has won the favor of everyone, including Alanndarian Nightsong, though it's worth mentioning that they had quite the fight when they first met.

As for the last one, my feelings are the most complicated. Barrick, an undead member of the Forsaken, makes me struggle with conflicting emotions. Every time we meet, I have to suppress the urge to purify him with the Light. Barrick seems to be aware of this, but he's never said anything about it. He just keeps his distance from me whenever we rest.

I remember when we were in the Eastern Plaguelands, Lord Tirion Fordring told us that race does not represent honor, so I must stick to my principles, as a paladin."

Angela set her pen aside and stretched lazily in her chair, letting out a contented sigh as she felt the gentle breeze of May brush against her skin, a sign that summer was approaching.

After a brief moment of relaxation, Angela sat up straight and started reviewing her writing.

"Terrible!" she judged her own original work harshly.

The novel she was working on was set in the captivating world of《Warcraft》specifically the realm of《World of Warcraft.》It had been a spontaneous decision to embark on this creative endeavor, driven by her love for the game's universe.

The impulse was sparked by the SNES console Edward had given her. The game console had already served its purpose and now rested quietly in the cabinet under her bed.

As someone accustomed to playing 3D games, a 16-bit console couldn't ignite her interest. Moreover, her gaming skills were rather terrible. When this type of console was first released she couldn't afford one, so she resorted to playing these games on the computer after they were cracked and available to play with cheat codes. Why bother learning a game without cheats when she had them readily available?

Now, with no cheat codes at her disposal, these games held little appeal to her. So, she quickly set the console aside. Just at that moment, she received a letter from Aunt Rowling and the idea of writing an original novel set in the gaming background came to her mind—a novel that could be called original, or rather, semi-original.

However, this task was not as straightforward as it seemed. For someone who had absorbed ideas and experiences from games, the easiest aspect to recreate was the music.

By remembering a particular segment, she could recall the entire piece. Next came the lyrics. Similarly, remembering a section allowed her to slowly recall the entire composition. It turned out that her eight years of being a gaming enthusiast were not wasted after all.

Yet, writing a script presented much more significant challenges. While she retained the general plot and some details, she had to make repairs and additions on her own. However, using a gaming background to write a novel was no longer considered plagiarism.

In her mind, she could visualize images, characters, and various actions, but transforming them into accurate words was another matter. The frustration arose when she had vivid scenes in her mind but struggled to articulate them into words—a painful experience indeed.

"Oh dear, I had plans to write novels based on《Silent Hill》and《Resident Evil》and then have gaming companies purchase them. But now, I can't even write a novel based on《World of Warcraft》quests. It feels like such a failure. How am I supposed to create original scripts in the future?" Angela sighed as she looked at her manuscript.

Checking the time, she realized it was almost dinner time. Tonight, her parents were attending a charity banquet, leaving only her and Jennifer at home.

So, instead of waiting for the housekeeper to remind her, Angela mumbled, put down her pen and paper, slipped on her shoes and headed downstairs.

[TL Note: I don't know if the names for the WoW script are accurate as I've never touched that game or the book, so if you spotted a mistake feel free to leave a comment!

On another note, it has been precisely one month since I began translating this novel. Time flies by quickly, almost frighteningly so. Some may feel that the story has been drawn out until now, but it's essential to understand that the entire first volume aims to convincingly portray the transition from a male to a female in the author's mind. It also lays the foundation for creating realistic characters and fostering a stronger bond between certain characters and the reader. As you might have guessed from various author notes, the author holds a high standard for making fantasy seem like reality. I hope my translation thus far meets that level of quality.

If you have enjoyed the novel up to this point, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes of your precious time to leave a review over at Novelupdates. Your feedback means a lot to me, and your support and donations are greatly valued. Thank you!
