Chapter 74: What's Meant to Happen Can't Be Escaped

"Why the long face, little one?" Jennifer gazed at Angela, who was toying with her food distractedly and inquired with concern.

"It's nothing, just... contemplating a truth," the young girl replied, nonchalantly shrugging. Whenever her parents weren't home for dinner, Jennifer would whip up some snacks she learned from her grandmother for Angela. While they couldn't match her grandmother's culinary expertise, they were still quite appetizing. However, tonight Angela felt a bit troubled.

"A truth? What truth is that? Care to share?" Jennifer asked, wearing a gentle smile.

"Impulsiveness is of the devil!" Angela proclaimed solemnly.

The housekeeper looked at her with mild confusion, but Angela didn't elaborate further. Instead, she swiftly finished the remaining dumplings and announced she was done eating. Then, she hurriedly dashed upstairs, leaving Jennifer shrugging and tidying up the table.

Back in her room, Angela walked around the balcony a few times before returning to the table where her writings were. She sighed and put them away, not in the mood to continue writing. During dinner, she had thought about the issue that had been bothering her for a while which led her to the conclusion that impulse was the devil.

What could be the reason for writing letters to Mr. Michael Mann and Mr. Winston Groom? Had they already sold the rights to《Forrest Gump》? Angela couldn't help but wonder as she sat there, her frustration growing. She had even enclosed a third of her script in the letter. Two months had passed, and there was still no reply.

Had she become a laughingstock?

Angela waved her hand in frustration, deciding to shift her thoughts to something happier. But what could bring her joy at this moment?

The experiment had been a complete failure, and even though Edward had shown affection by holding her hand, it only made her feel uneasy. The idea of him trying to hug her gave her goosebumps. It was clear that she had no romantic interest in boys.

The words "lilie," "lesbian," and "coming out" rushed into her mind, along with Jodie's previous words, adding to Angela's distress. She paced back and forth in her room, her movements becoming increasingly restless.

"Damn, can I please stop thinking about this!" Angela exclaimed, shaking her head vigorously. Seeking a distraction, she hurriedly moved to the piano and took a deep breath before opening the lid and placing her hands on the keys.

With a swift motion, urgent music erupted from the instrument, neither grand nor elegant but fast! So fast that it felt like a swarm of busy bees buzzing back and forth, creating a chaotic yet rhythmic melody that, though peculiar, was undeniably fascinating.

However, playing proved to be no easy task for Angela. Even though she only played for half a minute, her forehead was already covered in tiny beads of sweat. Her breathing became rapid as if she might run out of breath any second. Her hands moved rapidly on the keys, faster and faster, almost as if they were turning into four hands. Suddenly, a strange noise came from the piano, and the music abruptly stopped.

Angela winced and held her right hand, her fingers clenching as she panted. It was still not good enough. Every time she reached this point, her fingers slipped. Was it because her speed wasn't enough?

The young girl looked disappointedly at the piano, shrugged again, and felt grateful that her fingers weren't injured this time, recalling the time her index finger swelled from the pain the first time she played.

"Alright, someday I'll be able to play it flawlessly." Angela closed the piano lid. Although she hadn't managed to play it perfectly, her mood had improved considerably. She wiped the sweat off her forehead and decided to take a bath.

Shutting the bathroom door, Angela undressed and filled the bathtub with water, sprinkling some bubble bath salts. As she watched the bubbles multiply under the running water, she hummed a tune in Chinese, "I love taking a bath, so many bubbles."

When she turned to grab a towel, she couldn't help but look at her reflection in the mirror. She still looked cute and pretty as before, but it seemed her chest had grown a bit larger—no, actually, it was two sizes bigger. Angela gestured and sighed. At this rate, she would turn from a girl into a woman. She really didn't want to grow up.

After reflecting for a moment, Angela quickly submerged herself in the bathtub, feeling that becoming a woman was still a distant thing. She'd worry about it later. These days, she had been feeling some slight discomfort in her lower abdomen. Maybe it was from eating something unclean. She needed to take a bath to soothe her discomfort, or else the abdominal pain might get worse and she could catch a cold.

...

The car stopped in front of the mansion after circling the fountain. Mr. and Mrs. Mason stepped out of the car, both elegantly dressed for the charity banquet. Tonight's event, organized by a Jewish foundation, was an invitation they couldn't turn down. Elena, in particular, wore a stunning low-cut purple evening gown, her natural charm captivating everyone at the party. Jared couldn't help but feel a little jealous.

"I personally suggest you consider dressing a bit more conservatively next time, my dear," Jared said, holding his wife's hand with a serious expression.

"But these clothes need to be worn after buying them. Are you going to let them sit in the closet? That's cruel," Elena replied with a light laugh.

"That's simple. You can wear them for me in the room," Jared winked, implying more than just trying on that particular dress.

Elena playfully elbowed him in the ribs without saying anything. Although they had decided to have another child last year, there had been no signs of pregnancy. Should they continue trying?

"You're back," Jennifer greeted them in the living room.

Elena nodded. "Is Chris still awake?"

"She probably isn't..." Jennifer's words were cut off as a sharp and desperate scream resounded from upstairs. Despite the good soundproofing in the house, the three of them could still hear the hysterical tone of the scream.

"What happened?!" Jared hadn't quite grasped the situation yet, but the two women had already rushed upstairs. They instantly recognized whose voice that was!

Leading the way was Jennifer, who had watched the little girl grow up. Her care for Angela was second to none, so she was the first to enter Angela's room and opened the bathroom door.

The first thing that caught her eye was the bathtub water that had turned pale red, which startled Jennifer. She then noticed Angela, huddled in the corner, hugging her arms. Angela was soaking wet and looked terrified staring straight ahead as if something terrible had just happened.

However, when Jennifer's gaze shifted downward, she immediately understood what had occurred. There was a continuous flow of blood-red liquid running down Angela's thighs, flowing into the bathtub and mixing with the warm water, gradually becoming diluted.

"It's okay, my dear, it's okay." Jennifer quickly grabbed a towel and wrapped Angela in it. Then she lifted her out of the bathtub and helped her sit on the toilet. Angela seemed frozen in fear, not reacting to anything letting Jennifer take care of her.

Elena rushed in, her dress held up, and glanced at the bathroom, immediately understanding what had happened. She hurriedly turned and blocked her husband outside. "Alright, Jared, you don't need to go in. The little one is fine."

"Hey Mary, you have to let me see what happened to Angela. What's going on?" Jared couldn't understand what was happening.

"Okay, my love, listen to me. Angela just experienced something that every girl goes through. She'll be fine, but you can't go in to see her," Elena said, gently pushing Jared out like herding a duck until he was shut outside the door. He still hadn't grasped what had happened and why he couldn't go in.

When Elena re-entered the bathroom, Jennifer was busy wiping Angela's body and hair, comforting her all the while. "Angela, it's okay. There's nothing to be afraid of. Every girl goes through this."

"Alright, my dear, it's nothing major." Elena squatted in front of Angela and gently caressed her face. It seemed that Angela was still a bit shaken.

"Is... is it my period?" Angela, who had been staring wide-eyed, suddenly asked.

"Yes, dear," Elena nodded. Before she could say anything else, the young girl exclaimed excitedly, "Impossible! How could I have my period! It's impossible for me to have my period!"

"Heh heh, Angela, calm down!" Her Mom embraced her and reassured her, "It's a normal phenomenon, my dear. Every girl goes through their period. You've read so many books, haven't you? It won't endanger anything. It might occasionally affect your daily life, but it's nothing serious. Just take some precautions and you'll be fine."

"No, Mom, it's not like that!" The little girl continued to be agitated, "How could I have my period! I can't have my period!"

"I'm a..." She suddenly got stuck on her words, unable to utter a single word.

"A what?" Elena asked, puzzled.

Angela's eyes darted around for a moment before she reluctantly and laboriously said, "I'm a... little girl!"

Her mom burst into laughter. "But not anymore. When you have your first period, it means you've grown up. It's the beginning of maturity. You've always claimed to be mature, right? Well, now you truly are. You've become a woman, no longer a girl. My dear, you should be happy about it."

"A grown-up? A woman? Happy?" Angela tried to smile, but it looked even worse than crying. Eventually, she let out a whimper, lowering her head and dejectedly resting it on her mother's shoulder.

Elena comforted her and then turned to Jennifer. "Jen, could you please find some sanitary pads? Angela will need them for the next few days."
