Chapter 84: Daydreaming and Spielberg

Even though the sun had already set behind the tall buildings, the sky was still tinted with a golden hue, enveloping the entire New York City in this color.

"Exhausted~" Angela stretched and yawned lazily while sitting on a bench, holding an ice cream in her left hand and shaking her slightly sore right hand.

"Well, that's your own doing," Natalie teased, licking her ice cream. "You only needed to play the music live once, but you insisted on playing along during every dance scene. I counted, we had to shoot it nine times. So, besides being possessive, you're also quite stubborn."

Angela glanced at her sideways discontent evident in her eyes. She wisely chose not to argue because, from any perspective she was indeed being stubborn. Though she didn't see it that way.

"I was just overly excited," Angela mumbled to herself.

Yes, that's right, just overly excited. Being part of such a classic scene must be so much fun and interesting. It's like that impulsive idea she had during her birthday party to insert herself into all the classic movies. Perhaps this was the most meaningful thing she had done.

But back to the point, she really owed a thank you to the Universal Pictures producer, Evan Roth. If he hadn't spoken up when Director Martin was hesitating, she might have had to find another way to join the cast. Luckily, everything went smoothly, and she impulsively decided to play the violin during the filming. However, she didn't expect that this movie had only a little over two minutes of tango, yet it took nearly ten takes—excluding the ones that didn't make the cut. It was more challenging than she initially thought.

The director kept shooting from different angles, even used two cameras so Al and Kate had to dance over and over again, and she had to play the violin repeatedly. Nine times, plus the NGs, her hand was getting tired from all the playing.

"Impulsiveness is of the devil," Angela sighed inwardly, taking a big bite of her chocolate-flavored ice cream. Unfortunately, the bite was too large, and the icy coldness immediately numbed her mouth. Her widened eyes reflected the shock from the sudden, freezing sensation.

She hurriedly tried to swallow, but her tongue seemed to slow down in response to the freezing cold and it took a while before she could push the chunk of ice cream down her throat. The cold feeling extended all the way to her stomach, making her shiver. After shaking her head for a while, she finally recovered.

Amused laughter came from beside her. Without even looking, Angela knew who it was. She turned to glare at Natalie, seemingly wanting to use her eyes to kill, but Natalie didn't take the bait. She turned her head away, still licking her vanilla ice cream completely unaware that her face was already covered in white cream, which looked quite comical. Angela was left with no choice but to retrieve her gaze, feeling embarrassed. What was she thinking!

Calm down! Calm down! Angela told herself, trying not to think about anything and simply focus on eating her ice cream. But she soon realized she was also licking the ice cream, and her face was sticky with cream. That meant... an image popped into her mind, making her shiver again. She felt like she was holding a flame in her hand and immediately threw the ice cream away.

"Hey, Angela, what's wrong?" Kate approached, stopping right in front of her and the ice cream landed perfectly in front of her.

"Okay, I know I took a little too long, but you don't have to treat me like that," Kate joked.

"I'm sorry, Kate," Angela quickly stood up to explain, "I got lost in my thoughts and accidentally threw it away. It didn't hit you, did it?"

"Are you thinking of something bad?" Natalie also stood up, asking curiously while using a piece of paper to wipe her face clean, removing any cream that could lead to wild thoughts.

Although Angela wanted to turn around and glare at her, she knew that would only confirm Natalie's suspicions about her thinking of something inappropriate. So she pretended not to hear Natalie's question and asked Kate instead, "How's everything at home?"

"It's fine. I told my mom that I'll be back soon." Kate replied while picking up the fallen ice cream from the ground and throwing it into the trash bin.

"So soon? We've only been in New York for a few days." Angela was surprised.

"Dear, it's been almost a week. I've taken care of everything, and my thesis is also settled. I can't stay here until the end of summer." Kate smiled.

'It's okay to stay until the end of summer.' Angela said in her mind, but she didn't say it out loud and instead changed the topic, "By the way, you must be tired after dancing the tango for so long today. How about we go for a walk in Central Park?"

Looking at the hopeful face of the little girl, Kate considered for a moment and agreed, "Sure, let's go."

"Yes!" Angela raised her hands and cheered, then reached out to pull Natalie, saying, "Nat, stop eating we're leaving."

"You can't ask me to stop just because you threw yours away." Natalie evaded her hand and made a funny face at Angela.

Angela returned the gesture, then grabbed Kate's hand and said, "Let's go, let's go. It'll get dark if we keep stalling."

As they walked away, Angela caught a glimpse of her grandfather getting out of a car parked across the street from a fancy restaurant and walking inside. However, she didn't pay much attention to it and continued on her way with Kate and Natalie.

...

In the private room of Perth's Restaurant, Steven Spielberg sat at the table, glancing at his watch, and then took off his glasses to wipe them. He had done this several times, his mood was obviously not calm.

"Don't worry Steven, the old man is always punctual," his friend, Jason Rothenberg reassured him.

"I know, Jason, I'm just excited. I can't help being angry when I think about some people suggesting that I donate the money for this film to the Holocaust Museum or something," Spielberg slammed the table.

"Yes, I know, I feel the same way," Jason nodded and then smiled, "But this time, we'll definitely secure the investment and your goal will be achieved."

"I hope so." Spielberg nodded. At this moment, the door of the private room was pushed open by a middle-aged man, and then an old man came in. Although he had white hair, he exuded an imposing aura.

Both Steven and Jason stood up involuntarily. The former reached out his hand, "Hello, Mr. Mason, I'm Steven Spielberg. Mr. Rothenberg must have told you about me."

"Yes, hello Mr. Spielberg, I'm Kleist Mason." The old man nodded, shook hands with him and then took off his coat, handing it to the middle-aged man next to him. At the same time, he introduced, "This is my lawyer, Anderson Green."

After a bit of small talk, the four of them sat down together. Spielberg was about to speak, but Mr. Mason raised his hand, "Mr. Rothenberg has told me everything in detail and I've also had people look into the matter and read the original novel. So I fully agree with your plan and will invest in this movie, and as for the amount..." He paused for a moment and then said decisively, "There's no upper limit!"

Steven was stunned, suddenly overwhelmed with an uncontrollable excitement. He had acquired the rights to adapt and produce this movie ten years ago, but at that time the timing was not right so he had never taken any action.

It was only in the 1990s that he started advocating for the movie and trying to get it produced. However, many people were skeptical even finding it strange that a director renowned for making thrilling, horror, and science fiction films with a childlike perspective would have such a seemingly inexplicable dream.

He had spent countless sleepless nights agonizing over it. Despite being anxious and distressed, he persistently persevered and ran around for the movie.

Just when he was almost desperate, he received news from his old friend, Jason Rothenberg, that Mr. Kleist Mason, the former president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, was willing to invest in the film. This made Steven ecstatic yet also filled with doubts. When he hurriedly rushed to New York, he didn't expect to receive such news. How could he not be excited?

"You... are too generous. For this, I express... my deepest gratitude!" Under the weight of excitement, Steven Spielberg, who had gone through countless hardships, stuttered a bit.

"This is what I should do," the old man gently shook his head, "Although our family had immigrated to the United States early on, there were still many members who were persecuted in Poland. Some things should not be forgotten."

"Yes, some things should not be forgotten," Steven nodded heavily.

The old man suddenly smiled, "Speaking of which, I should consider myself fortunate. I haven't watched movies for many years and I rarely watch television. If it weren't for my granddaughter working as a young actress in Hollywood now, I wouldn't have paid attention to these things and I wouldn't have met Mr. Rothenberg either."

"Is your granddaughter acting in movies in Hollywood?" Steven asked curiously.

"Yes, she also writes scripts and the like," the old man didn't want to talk about this topic too much, shook his head, and then suddenly asked, "I suppose you will go to Poland for on-location shooting, right?"

"Yes," Spielberg nodded.

"Then I have two requests."

"Please go ahead."

"First, you should build new sets instead of shooting at any concentration camps. Do not disturb the souls of the deceased! Second, I believe you already have the main cast selected. Besides them, try to cast the descendants of those who were rescued and survived in the concentration camps to play their ancestors' roles!"

After a moment of silence, Spielberg suddenly stood up, respectfully bowing to the old man, "I apologize for my hastiness and lack of consideration. I will keep your opinions in mind and follow through with them!"

The old man nodded slightly, accepting his apology and then stood up, "Then that's settled. I believe this will be an internationally acclaimed film. Mr. Green will finalize the contract and send it to Mr. Rothenberg's office tomorrow. I look forward to your success!"
