Chapter 1 - Regression

My master once said, "If only you had come five years sooner, you would have been a hero to save the world.."

She told me those lines over and over again ever since I came here. She was holding a glass of wine with a smile on her face.

And now, she is repeating it. But this time, it is not a wine that is in her mouth, but blood.

"The world.. needs.. a hero.."

My head was spinning and blank as I stared at my dying master. My eyes are getting blurry because of tears, yet my mind won't work. Everything feels so unreal. I can't...

I closed my eyes as I saw her slowly drifting away from me. The meaning of her words was neither a simple regret nor a word of mourn.

It was something that she could think of until she drew her last breath. It was a deep need for something impossible, something that she longed for all her life.

Until her last moment, all she needs to think of is a hero. Someone that could save this world. Someone that I should have been if only she knew it earlier.

Until her last, she was apologizing for something that was out of her control.

"Damn it.." I felt a sharp pain punctured my heart.

"If only you had an ordinary environment, ordinary family, an ordinary education. If only these things had been given to you, you would have awakened your powers properly.."

She keeps on saying it. I thought it was nothing but nonsense—a passing thought of her. I didn't know that she held that regret so much that it is the only thing she could think of until her last moments.

But now, I am starting to regret it too.

My strength is not enough. The world is ending.

I held her tightly in my arms.

I never told her how much she means to me. We treated each other like a nuisance, full of jokes and silly comments. I haven't thanked her properly for all the things she did for me. Is this how we will end?

Tears started falling from my eyes.

For the first time in my life, I cried. I've been through so much hardship and misfortune, but I never cried. Not even once.

But now, these tears are full of remorse and regret. I am starting to blame myself for everything.

"Why am I not stronger?" "Why am I so weak that I can't even protect the person I love?"

The Guardian of the Shining Shield shattered along with the shield she was proud of. The saint's prayer was no longer heard. My master is out of breath.

The regressor who was called the strongest of all humankind had already died.

Perhaps, it is not a coincidence that they came all the way here. They intend to take over the world.

"If I had mastered this ability..."

I feel so angry and desperate. Regrets are starting to fill my mind.

I looked up at the King of Sura who made my master like this.

"If I had come out of the orphanage much earlier..."

Waves of regrets arose and swept me away. As if it is scolding me for all the foolish decisions I made in the past.

The King of Sura laughed so loud. The eerie sound of his victory laugh is ringing through my ears.

He groaned in pleasure as he looked at us rolling on the floor.

I clenched my hand. Anger filled my heart, yet I cannot do anything but listen to his laugh. To watch him ridicule our fallen soldiers.

Both of my legs were broken, and the enemy lost an arm. A thick arm went over my head, and I knew that it was the end for me.

In the end, it is best to close your eyes and wallow in resentment and regret. Because there is nothing left to do, it was a split second before I met my death, and all I could see was darkness.

[the wheel of fortune chooses you]

White letters gleamed in the dark. The face of a sullen man flickered in the background—a man with thick forearms with tattoos of female demons.

This man must have been the headmaster of my enemies in the orphanage.

I scoffed. "What the hell? Why is the culprit of my miserable life is the last thing I will see before my death? Damn."

He gave me an eerie smile.

"Jinsung Lee! You have already been there!"

The man who greeted me slapped me on the back.

I looked at them, confused. It was the director. I blinked and rubbed my eyes.

"You bastard. Did you really steal it? Ha!" He laughed.

The director snatched the necklace from my hand and took it aggressively.

"Huh?" I am still confused. What the hell is happening. I am sure I just died.

I looked around, and I was in a familiar place. I walked, and my legs were fine.

"This. Don't tell me.."

I hastily looked for a mirror and looked at my face in the reflection.

I was expecting a 30-year-old adult who experienced a lot of hardship in his life but what I saw is different.

I look like a bright teenager who is living the prime of his life.

I touched my face

Did I come back from the past?
