Zhao Qian suspected that he’d heard wrong. Lin Yong’s daughter? Wasn’t Lin Yong their comrade? Although he’d aligned himself with Prince Yan at a later stage, Zhao Qian had seen this naturally and unusually strong man several times. He was a talent with a lot of potential. When Zhao Qian later learned that Lin Yong had died to save Prince Yan, he lamented. But Lin Yong’s status was lower than his. Why had Prince Yan married his daughter? How did they know each other?

Zhou Mao Cheng also felt that what Prince Yan did put everyone in an awkward position. He coughed and said, “wasn’t Lin Yong conferred as a Marquis by request of the Prince? After the war, the Prince went to Shunde Prefecture to return Lin Yong’s remains to his hometown. Along the way, he brought Lin Yong’s only daughter back to the capital to take care of her.”

So he took care of her until she became the Prince Yan Consort?

Zhao Qian told himself that it was fortunate that Lin Yong didn’t know about this. Even though such a great development had happened with this person who was his commanding general, he was a little too gloomy. However, Zhao Qian’s criticism remained unsaid and he was very supportive of this marriage. Prince Yan must’ve been willing to get married this time. Lin Yong’s only worry before his death had been resolved. It was truly a win-win situation for everyone.

The only problem was that Lin Wei Xi had originally been their junior, but now that she was Prince Yan’s wife, everyone’s positions were a bit troublesome.

Gu Hui Yan didn’t stop Zhou Mao Cheng from speaking and clearly didn’t think it was something difficult for others to see. As for Zhou Mao Cheng’s winking, Zhao Qian was shocked… Alright, Gu Hui Yan admitted to being a little embarrassed. After agreeing to take care of his subordinate’s daughter, he initially said he’d find a husband for her. But in the end, she entered the Prince Yan Residence and never left again. He really seemed to have let Lin Yong down.

Prince Yan was a newly-wed. Of course his subordinates and old comrades had to tease him a little. And Gu Hui Yan, who was usually aloof and indifferent, allowed them to joke around. Zhao Qian was surprised and thought that those who’d married really changed. Prince Yan knew that he was wrong this time. Otherwise, under normal circumstances, how could he let them tease him?

Despite the jokes, Zhao Qian was actually very satisfied with this outcome and the corners of his eyes felt a little sour. After meeting again after so many years, his old friend was safe and sound with a lovable wife by his side. Zhao Qian sincerely wished them well. For many years, Prince Yan had fought in various wars all over the country and remained undefeated. Everyone in the army trusted and adored him as the God of War. He was the pillar of the Prince Yan Residence and was also someone who provided reassurance to the Emperor and ministers in court. Zhao Qian and Zhou Mao Cheng followed Gu Hui Yan with all their hearts. However, someone like him who deserved everyone’s respect actually didn’t have much luck when it came to his personal relationships. He’d remained alone for many years regardless of what he did. Now, he had someone to accompany him by his side. It wasn’t just Zhao Qian and Zhou Mao Cheng, the one hundred thousand strong Yan army were all wholeheartedly happy for him and wished the Prince Yan Consort well. Their only wish was for the Princess Consort to properly accompany Prince Yan.

The old friends had reunited, and after teasing each other for a while, they slowly talked about the things going on in society and the army. Zhao Qian was in the midst of reporting the situation at the border when he looked across the courtyard and suddenly saw a beautiful woman decked out in pearl jade walking towards them. Before Zhao Qian could react, he saw Gu Hui Yan abandon the few people who were talking and quickly walk in that direction.

Prince Yan was already gone before Zhao Qian could get half his sentence out, his mouth not even closed yet. This was unprecedented and absolutely unimaginable if this had occurred in the last ten years. Zhao Qian was dumbfounded. Zhou Mao Cheng understood and said to him, “That’s the Prince Yan Consort.” After saying that, he pointedly added, “things are different now. You ought to understand, right?”

Zhao Qian smiled in understanding. They were just newly-weds. He himself had a family and children, so he understood it very well. Out of respect, Zhao Qian never looked directly at the Prince Yan Consort. Even though Lin Shi was originally from the same generation as his daughter, she was now the Prince Yan Consort. That’s why he needed to treat her with respect and courtesy. So even if he was dying from curiosity, he never looked at her.

But he didn’t expect that Gu Hui Yan would return after a while with a dazzling woman next to him. Her skin was fair and delicate, her jade ornaments jingled, and star-like pearl jade decorated her cloud-like hair. No matter how precious the jewellery was, it couldn’t compete with her splendour. She smiled, nodded to Zhou Mao Cheng and the others one at a time, and gave them a light wanfu salute, “Uncle Zhou, General Zhao Qian.”

Zhou Mao Cheng and Zhao Qian hurried to stop her. She was the Prince Yan Consort. They couldn’t accept her salute. Zhou Mao Cheng blushed from embarrassment and quickly glanced at Gu Hui Yan, saying, “This humble official can’t accept this form of address from the Princess Consort.”

Lin Wei Xi had called him “Uncle Zhou”. Then what about him and Prince Yan? Zhou Mao Cheng’s life wasn’t long enough for him to take advantage of Prince Yan.

Of course Zhou Mao Cheng and Zhao Qian didn’t dare offend Lin Wei Xi. After they reached out to stop her, she stood up as well and only gave half a bow. It wasn’t an issue for her, as the junior, to salute to the two of them. But she was also the Prince Yan Consort and it wasn’t very appropriate for her to bow to them. Today, she’d specially come to the outer courtyard to pick up Gu Hui Yan and hadn’t expected to meet Lin Yong’s former comrade-in-arms and senior officer as well. They were also Prince Yan’s capable subordinates. So going with the situation and logic, Lin Wei Xi had to greet the two of them.

To avoid arousing suspicion, Zhao Qian didn’t look too closely at the Prince Yan Consort. But even so, her dazzling appearance made him feel dizzy. For a moment, he didn’t know whether to lament how Lin Yong had such a beautiful daughter, or lament that Prince Yan was really cunning. After Lin Wei Xi greeted the two of them out of courtesy, as a woman of Prince Yan’s family, she prepared to take her leave after standing with them for a while. She looked at Gu Hui Yan and asked tentatively, “my Prince?”

It seemed like Gu Hui Yan and the two still had court matters to discuss. Lin Wei Xi looked questioningly at him. Zhou Mao Cheng and Zhao Qian weren’t blind, so after seeing this, he said perceptively, “Old Zhao and I have plans to go for a drink. We shouldn’t keep our brothers waiting. I will take my leave first. My Prince, Princess Consort, please forgive this humble one.”

Gu Hui Yan conveniently said, “It isn’t safe for you to travel by yourself. I’ll accompany you back.”

Gu Hui Yan’s face didn’t redden nor did his heart skip a beat as he abandoned Zhao Qian and the others, who were still talking, and took Lin Wei Xi to the inner courtyard. It was only after they gradually walked away, that Zhao Qian dared to joke with Zhou Mao Cheng, “I think this is a first. I used to be able to report to Prince Yan whenever I needed to. Now it seems like I don’t understand amorous feelings anymore. I gossiped with Prince Yan so long that I interfered with their newly-wed business.”

Zhou Mao Cheng laughed, “You’ll get used to it if you stay in the Prince Yan Residence for a few more days.”

Now that Gu Hui Yan wasn’t there, the two of them had to talk a lot behind his back. Zhou Mao Cheng knew the details of this matter, so he regaled the whole story from the beginning, when they went to Shunde Prefecture to deliver the remains. The two secretly gossiped a lot. At the end, they smiled knowingly at each other, completely satisfied.

Scraps of Prince Yan’s personal life were rare to come by.

.

Lin Wei Xi and Gu Hui Yan walked in the corridor. The sky was grey again today. They’d only walked halfway when it began to snow again.

“My Prince, from today onwards, you don’t have to go to the government office? You don’t have to get up early to go to court tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Really?” Lin Wei Xi was very suspicious. Gu Hui Yan was usually very busy. Even she could only see him once the sky had darkened. Yet he’d leave before she woke up the next day. With the sudden knowledge that he’d stay in the residence from today to the fifteenth next year, Lin Wei Xi was very doubtful and always suspicious that he’d be called away that moment.

Gu Hui Yan laughed and said, “Yes, really. I was busy with other things these past few days and neglected the family. I can properly spend time with you for the next few days.”

Although Lin Wei Xi didn’t agree to it, there was already a smile in her eyes. It had just snowed the night before. Although their path had been cleaned, there was still a thick layer of snow in the wooded area. A gust of wind blew and a snowflake happened to fall onto Lin Wei Xi’s forehead. She reached out to grab it and looked up at the vast expanse of white sky, “It’s snowing.”

Gu Hui Yan looked up as well and reached out to tighten the cloak around Lin Wei Xi’s neck, “The wind is strong outside. Be careful not to catch a cold.”

She glared at him unconvincingly, “I’m not a kid. I know how not to catch a cold. Don’t keep treating me like a kid.”

He smiled, fastened her cloak, and said, “All right.”

Lin Wei Xi looked out the corridor, the sparkling snow reflecting in her eyes. It just so happened that there were stairs here that led directly to the snowy grounds outside. She abandoned her maids and Gu Hui Yan, running to the undisturbed snow. After stepping on the snow and making many footprints, she smiled as she turned around to look at Gu Hui Yan, “my Prince, look, it’s snowing!”

Gu Hui Yan stood in the winding corridor made of dark wood and watched Lin Wei Xi with a smile. She wanted to claim that she wasn’t a child and was already an adult, yet she stepped on the snow so childishly. The expression in his eyes suddenly shifted. He was about to say something, but it was too late. Perhaps because it couldn’t bear the heavy load, or perhaps because it’d been disturbed by Lin Wei Xi’s voice, but a pine branch that was bent shook and suddenly sprung back. It dumped out a bunch of soft white snow, which happened to smash into Lin Wei Xi’s head.

She was caught off guard by the pile of snow that fell on her head. She hadn’t worn a hood because she found it troublesome, but fresh snow had now coincidentally fallen into her neck. The snow that fell behind her neck was especially cold. Lin Wei Xi let out an “Ah” and hurriedly shook off the snow from her head and body.

No one in the corridor laughed, but Gu Hui Yan couldn’t help laughing, and smiled softly. He walked up to Lin Wei Xi, chuckling as he brushed the snowflakes off her head, “And you said that you’re not a child. What about now?”

Lin Wei Xi was so upset that she trembled from head to toe. She quickly shook off the loose snow from the back of her collar. Gu Hui Yan’s words truly made her angry and aggrieved, “How would I know this kind of coincidence would happen; that a pile of snow would happen to fall and that it’d happen to fall on my head.”

Gu Hui Yan couldn’t resist laughing again. It was rare for him to be so unrestrained with his feelings, his eyes filled with open joy. He lowered his head slightly and carefully brushed away the pieces of snow on Lin Wei Xi’s black hair.

Wan Xing and Wan Yue were very perceptive. They stepped forward and handed Lin Wei Xi a new hand stove, then retreated. They even stopped the other maids, not allowing them to disturb the Prince and the Princess Consort. Gu Hui Yan lowered his gaze slightly and patted the snow from Lin Wei Xi’s body. Anyone could see the smile on his face from the side. Lin Wei Xi was hugging the stove, her cheeks red, and she didn’t look too happy.

Lin Wei Xi’s neck was wrapped in fluffy white fur that made her skin sparkle and her face look brilliant. Standing among the flawless snow and black branches dripping with water, she looked even more stunning and glowing, like a goddess who’d mistakenly fallen into the human realm. And Gu Hui Yan’s profile was quite handsome. Although he was smiling, the way he patted snow off her was particularly careful and gentle. Whoever saw such a picture had to praise them as a heavenly couple◇.

Gu Cheng Yao stood at the corner of another corridor and happened to come across this scene. This was his first time seeing Lin Wei Xi look so lively and also his first time seeing his father with gentle eyes. The two of them looked very well matched and he couldn’t help but stop in his tracks. For a while he didn’t know whether to walk out like he knew nothing or withdraw and pretend that he hadn’t seen them.

He didn’t hesitate for long. Wan Yue, who was on the other side, had good eyes and already saw him, “Shizi?”

Lin Wei Xi and Gu Hui Yan both raised their heads and looked in his direction. Gu Cheng Yao had no choice but to step forward and reveal himself to everyone, “Father, Mother.”

Gu Hui Yan saw that it was Gu Cheng Yao and merely nodded indifferently, then lowered his head to continue tidying the snow on Lin Wei Xi’s collar. The smile on Lin Wei Xi’s face quickly disappeared. She looked noble and distant as she nodded to Gu Cheng Yao, “Shizi.”

Like a flash, Lin Wei Xi went from a lively beauty and returned to an aloof, dignified and indifferent stepmother. Gu Cheng Yao didn’t know what it was that he was feeling. He also didn’t know why his eyes were accurately capturing many details, like one of his father’s hands picking at the snow on Lin Wei Xi’s head while the other lay on her waist. The two were extremely close and Lin Wei Xi was very unperturbed by this level of physical contact, without a hint of discomfort.

Gu Cheng Yao rolled his eyes without anyone noticing. Lin Wei Xi had greeted Gu Cheng Yao very formally when she suddenly felt a pinprick at the top of her head. She covered her hair and painfully raised her head to complain, “my Prince, you grabbed my hair!”

“Is that so? I wasn’t paying attention.” Gu Hui Yan calmly retracted his hand as if it was truly a momentary slip of the hand. He looked at Lin Wei Xi’s watery eyes caused by the pain, and felt a little sorry for the first time. He rubbed the spot where he’d pulled and asked in a whisper, “Does it hurt?”
