Chapter 288

“Ugh, I feel sick………”

Above the sea shrouded in fog, I muttered, slumped alone over the side of the ship. The reason I’d ended up like this is that after about ten days of sailing straight through a foggy sea, the ship suddenly began spinning in place.

No, to be precise, it’s not the ship that’s spinning. I was the one spinning. The fog that enveloped this area seemed to have a similar effect to the confusing forest Alexis entered to obtain the holy sword, and it greatly disrupted people’s sense of direction.

However, the state-of-the-art magical brain installed on this ship was unaffected by this effect, as it’s not human. It’s heading straight for the Demon King, but… I, who was on board, was different.

My sense of direction was twisting and turning, and the ship, which was proceeding straight, gave me the illusion that it was twisting and turning.

Moreover, this ship was much faster than the ships of this world, so under my perception, the ship kept spinning like a leaf tossed about in a raging river.

“Ugh… Hey, doesn’t it feel like we’re still far away?”

[I cannot answer that, as the destination is not clear.]

“Ah, right, right…”

Since my [Akashic Compass] only points in a direction and does not tell the distance, I have no idea when we’ll arrive. I knew that, yet I asked a question I knew I couldn’t know the answer to… Oh, my head is spinning.

[“Warning. I am detecting a high concentration of mental interference magic around us. Defense with this machine’s shield is difficult. I recommend this product. It’s so refreshing it’ll wake you up! The hugely popular refreshment drink, Yabascash—]

“No, that’s enough! Wait, does it work? Maybe I should have bought some… Gufu!”

With a slight regret, I tuned out the loud advertising slogan. Normally, I would use [Magia Absorp] but since it would wipe out the magical effects of anything it touches, I can’t use it while on this ship, which was clearly a mass of magical technology. If the ship were to stop here, I’d likely be adrift and see nothing but a future of death.

“Hang in there, my semicircular canals… Fight on… One more time……..”

[For our tired customers, we recommend this product—]

“Shut up……..”

After enduring the sensation of being swallowed by a whirlpool and the ship’s incessant product recommendations for roughly thirty minutes, the presence around me suddenly changes, and I quickly wake up.

“Stop!”

[“Order accepted. Stopping.]

The tension of seasickness was blown away in an instant, and I reached for the sword at my waist as I scanned the surroundings. My field of vision was still filled with thick fog, so dense that it blurred my arm when I reached out, but… wait, is there a flow in the fog? Where…! “Full speed ahead!”

[“Sudden acceleration may be dangerous—]

“I don’t care! Move!”

I kicked the ship’s wheel hard, and the hull accelerated and moved quickly in response. Then the fog where I had been a moment ago moved softly, and a deep incision ran across the sea’s surface.

“Tch, where’s the main body!? Or is it—”

“FOOOOOOOO!”

“Oh, it’s that pattern…”

With an ethereal dance, the surrounding fog gracefully swirled and converged, gradually unveiling a cleared expanse spanning approximately 100 meters in radius. Amidst the mesmerizing spectacle, the fog coalesced at the center, conjuring a majestic human visage crafted from pristine, white mist, suspended in the heavens above. Be it fortuitous or otherwise, the countenance did not bear resemblance to mine; instead, an aged, bearded old man’s face gazed down. Yet, there was no mistaking the unmistakable aura exuding from that enigmatic presence.

Also, I probably guess that face was what I’d look like when I’m older. It somehow feels familiar.

“I see, the Fog Demon King… Instead of creating fog, you yourself are the fog.”

“FOOOOOOOO!”

“Stop abruptly! Then maintain a distance of about 10 meters from the fog on the perimeter and continue to run at a constant speed!”

[Order accepted. After a temporary stop, I will begin circling.

With agile finesse, I deftly evaded the cutting fog blade as it snapped perilously close in front of me. Fixing my determined gaze upon the Fog Demon King, I steadied myself on the swift-moving ship. As per my usual practice, it was time to initiate a preliminary test!

“Ha!”

Without a moment’s hesitation on the undulating deck, I executed a powerful swing, and my sword launched a slicing assault at the Fog Demon King. As intended, it cleaved the demon’s face in two, yet this time, the feedback felt even more subdued.

In swift retaliation, the reformed Fog Demon King narrowed its immense mouth and expelled a swirling fog towards me. Skillfully piloting the ship, I deftly evaded the attack, employing an unconventional method—randomly kicking the wheel. To my surprise, the fog breath left behind a trail of shimmering lights in its wake.

An ice attack, or perhaps something else? While lacking precise knowledge, I was acutely aware that being struck by such an attack would undoubtedly prove disadvantageous.

Moreover, physical attacks proved even less effective than against the Demon King Kuronuri. While the latter could still be cut, the former felt completely nullified. Nevertheless, I had fully anticipated this situation, leaving no room for panic.

“Fog that doesn’t clear is to be expected… So how about this?”

From the [Stranger’s Box] I retrieved a metallic disc and pressed the red protrusion in the center. Throwing it at the Fog Demon King, intense flames suddenly erupted near its face, burning away the surrounding fog.

“Hahaha! How’s the taste of Magimine? I splurged quite a bit on this just for you!”

This military weapon from the 092nd world, which I had John purchase for me, allowed even someone like me, who couldn’t use magic, to execute elemental attacks with a mere press and throw. A truly remarkable item.

Ah, of course, John and I had made up this time too. Since Demon Kings could exchange some memories through a show of power, reconciling with someone I’ve reconciled with before was relatively easy, as long as the situation was set up for a handshake.

“So, the effect is… decent, I guess?”

“FOOOOOOO!”

The intense flames seemed to evaporate some of the fog that composed the Demon King’s face. However, the amount of fog constituting the enemy remained vast, and honestly, the damage inflicted was so negligible that one might attribute it to mere imagination.

“How about this, then? Here you go!”

Dodging attacks by zigzagging the ship with a kick of the steering wheel, I threw another disc, this one with a blue protrusion. It sprayed out frigid, fog-whiter cold air where I aimed it, causing part of the Demon King’s face to freeze solid.

Zaboon!

“FOOOOOOO!”

“Oh? Surprisingly, this one works better?”

A huge chunk of ice sank into the sea, gouging out a portion of the Demon King’s face where the ice had been. While it regenerated quickly, this attack seemed to shave off more of the fog.

Hmm, I had thought burning it would be more effective, but this was a new discovery. Still, it was too early to conclude that this method was the best. I had plenty of untested Magimines at my disposal.

“Come on, let’s keep going! Whether your fog catches me, or my weapons finish shaving you off, it’s a race to see which happens first!”

“FOOOOOOO!”

Grinning, I held colorful, protruding discs in my hand, while the Fog Demon King opened its mouth wide, shaking the air. This battle somehow felt more like “Fog Demon King vs. the 092nd world’s magical tools” than “Fog Demon King vs. me,” but I shouldn’t worry about the details. I was certainly not a driver and disc-throwing attendant, but a hero facing the Demon King.

“Alright, next is the wind… Oh, crap, is this poison?”

“FOOOOOOO!”

“Hey!? A poison fog attack? That’s cheating! Run, run! Full-speed retreat!”

[Warning. If you continue to handle it roughly, insurance may not apply—]

“I don’t care! Just run!”

[..For someone like you, we recommend this information. Huh!? Insurance that still applies in this condition—]

“FOOOOOOO!”

“Stop it!”

In a split second, distinguishing between green and deep green proved challenging. Grumbling that they should be more easily discernible, my fierce battle with the Fog Demon King continued for some time.
