“A knight in armor with pure white wings, huh. What is this—”

[Offer it.]

A very typical-looking enemy cuts off my thoughts and speaks out. His majestic voice, resonating like a church bell, momentarily rattled my head. An ordinary person would probably be incapacitated by the voice alone, but of course, neither Tia nor I were affected any more than that.

[For the divine order decreed by God, offer everything in this world.]

“Hey hey, you’re identifying yourself so clearly? Well, it’s easy to understand, so that’s good.”

We understand all too well the existence of God and the fact that fragments of that power are somehow present in another world. Of course, there might be a completely different “self-proclaimed god” at play, but my intuition tells me that this one is genuine.

But more than that, spreading such flashy power all over the place would certainly leave no room for error.

“Anyway, attacking directly, what kind of change of heart is that?”

Up until now, God has only continued to exert influence by dwelling within someone, affecting their power and thoughts. Why has there been such a direct shift in existence here? What could be the reason?

Even if I think about it, there’s no way to find an answer, but it’s certainly easier to understand than the usual cunning tricks.

“Well, never mind. Since it’s in a state that makes it easy to defeat… I’ll send it off swiftly!”

[Offer it.]

I took out my [Dawnbreaker] from the [Stranger’s Box] and prepared to battle. The white giant warrior… “Winged” swings the ridiculously huge spear in its hand and throws it at the ground.

Yes, the ground. Not me. The spear that landed at the feet of Winged emits a white light along with dust, blowing away the green grass, revealing the rugged ground.

“Huh? Where are you aiming?”

“No! Ed, that’s terrible!”

“Tia?”

As I tilt my head at the attack aimed at the wrong place, Tia calls out to me in a shout. Without turning around, I glance over, and Tia is looking at the now-barren ground with a pained expression.

“What’s wrong, Tia? What’s wrong with that attack?”

“The place where the spear pierced lost the power of spirits rapidly. Probably that’s the true nature of the wilderness from earlier!”

“What!? That’s… bad.”

I thought it was just the surface being blown away, but it seems the situation is much more serious. From yesterday’s conversation, this is supposed to be much worse than mere destruction.

“Hey Tia, will it go back to normal?”

“It’s only a localized loss of power now, so if left alone, the surrounding power will flow in, and it should return to normal in a week or two. But if we keep getting attacked, and the hole keeps getting bigger…”

“I see. Then—”

[Offer it.]

“We can’t let it strike again!”

The white spear had returned to Winged’s hand somehow, and seeing it swung again, I immediately start running. At a visually recognizable distance, with the use of [Hermes Dash] it took only a moment.

“Take that!”

I knock the released spear away with a strike using my  [Dawnbreaker]. I intended to destroy it, but the spear’s strength was higher than expected.

“Damn, it’s hard!? What’s it made of!”

[Offer—]

“How about the main body!?”

The spear I knocked far away, unsurprisingly, returned to Winged’s hand in an instant. So this time, I’ll cut off the arm that throws it. After knocking away the spear with [Orbit Reflector] I gather the impact in my legs and leap high. But…

“Tch, it won’t cut!?”

Even though it’s a slash with enough force to crack the bones in my legs, I can’t sever off Winged’s arm. Reluctantly, I slide the blade that sunk into the gap in the armor and pull it out, then rise above its head and aim for the neck.

“How about this!?”

[Offer—]

That blow undoubtedly sunk into Winged’s neck. However, despite the definite feeling, Winged shows no sign of pain, and not a single drop of blood sprouts.

But it seems the fact of the injury itself couldn’t be ignored. The cuts in the neck and side slightly unbalanced Winged when throwing the spear, and the angle was slightly high. With this—

“Tia!”

“Leave it to me! Yaaaaaa!!”

Tia’s silver spirit sword, imbued with a tornado, collided with the Winged’s spear. The swirling wind catches the giant spear at an angle, but the difference in mass between them is too large, and Tia’s face twists in pain.

“Kuuu… But!”

“Ah, enough!”

In the precious moment that Tia has bought, I kick off the Winged body to accelerate, absorbing all the impact from the collision with the ground into [Orbit Reflector] while activating [Hermes Dash] In an instant, I reached Tia and deflected the spear upward with all the accumulated force.

“Oryaaaaaaaaaa!”

With my roar, the giant spear floats slightly in the air and falls about two meters beside us. The ground shakes with a heavy thud, and dust rises, but the absence of that white light means that we have managed to defend against it once again.

“Phew, we somehow managed for now.”

“That’s true. But it’s impossible to keep doing this forever, right? Don’t you have any other plans?”

“Umm…”

Although we have more than enough strength left, we’ll be at a stalemate without a breakthrough. Knowing this, Tia raises her voice slightly in frustration, but I also can’t think of a good idea.

(I can’t feel like the spear or armor will cut at all. The body also feels oddly squishy, like I’m cutting through tightly packed clay… What’s going on?)

While the [Sword Of Thin Life] might cut through, there’s no point in thinking about a weapon I don’t have. The other option seems to be…

(T/N: Got any new name for this sword?)

“Archers, fire!”

“Waaaaaaaaa!”

Then, from behind, a roar rises, and hundreds of arrows fly towards the Winged one. It seems that reinforcements have arrived from the town. The armed soldiers run past us, and one of them stops to talk.

“Are you guys okay? That was a fierce battle.”

“Yeah, we’re fine for now. How about you, Tia?”

“I’m okay too. I haven’t been injured.”

“That’s good to hear. We’ll take care of it from here, so you two should take cover.”

“Thank you. But can you handle that thing?”

Tia inquires, wiping the sweat from her brow, to the calm words of the man. But his answer is vastly different from my expectation.

“Huh? We can’t do it. You guys were fighting it, so you know, right? That’s not something ordinary humans can handle. All we can do is try to hold it back with our lives.”

“What!? In that case, we’ll fight too! Right, Ed?”

“I don’t mind, but…”

“What? Is there a problem?”

I reply hesitantly, and Tia pulls my arm impatiently. But I stop her with my hand and talk to the soldier again.

“Hold on a second. You say you’re ready to face death, but I don’t see any desperation in you or the other soldiers. Is there something going on?”

Whether it’s the man in front of me or those actually fighting the Winged one, I can sense a certain confidence. If they were truly prepared to die, there would be a more desperate atmosphere.

If it’s not there, are they either giving up or holding a trump card?

“Hehe, you noticed? Normally it’s a close call, but thanks to you two buying time, our reinforcements have made it in time. Look!”

“Reinforcements? … Eh!?”

Looking in the direction the man points, I see a black dot flying towards us at a tremendous speed. It dives into the Winged one, kicking its head back, and lands beside the soldiers.

“Hahaha! Well done, you lowly humans! Now, let my great power bring victory to you all!”

“Wow! It’s the Black Knight! The Black Knight has come!”

A man equipped with pitch-black armor and a black cloak with a red lining makes his appearance, and the soldiers around him cheer. He arrives like the hero of a tale.

“Wow, amazing! Hey Ed, could he be the hero of this world?”

“…No, he’s not.”

While Tia is excited, I don’t know what face to make. I mean, that’s…

“…That guy is probably the Demon King.”

“Heh!? The, the Demon King!?”

At the arrival of the presumed Demon King, welcomed by the cheers of the people, I wear an expression of profound confusion from the bottom of my heart.
