Regress | Chapter 1 - Regression

Arthas  April 03, 2024  No comments

I am the absolute evil.

The world decreed it so, and everyone believed it.

My opinion was nowhere to be found, but I didn't care much about it.

After all, I'm just an outsider.

In the end, I am a human who will leave this world and return to the world where I originally lived.

—「Main Quest」—

✦ Absolute Evil

: Just as there is darkness, so too does light exist. For the salvation of the world, your death is inevitable. Embrace a death befitting a villain.

✦ Scenario Progress

: 0%

'This is mind-boggling, no matter how many times I see it.'

A translucent system window floated in the air.

It was the world of a mobile game I had been enjoying all night long just days before my long-awaited discharge from the military. Not only had I been transmigrated into the body of the sole villain, but now I was supposed to act like a villain as well.

At first, I thought this was some kind of sick joke.

However, I couldn't bring myself to easily dismiss that darn quest.

The reason being......

✦ Reward

: Return to the original world

That damn quest was the only way for me to return to my original world. Back to my real body that I've lived in all my life, not this unfamiliar villainous role in a game.

'I want to eat gamjatang (pork bone soup)...'

...not the bland medieval food lacking flavors, but a proper Korean dish loaded with seasonings.

I really miss my my friends who always helped me whenever I asked for it, without asking for anything in return.

The smiles of my parents, simple but affectionate, still lingered in my mind.

And above all...

'I need dopamine. Dopamine.'

This damn world was just too boring for a modern person like me.

The only somewhat enjoyable pastime is this shoddy and poorly executed theater.

Does that even make sense?

And so, I made a resolution.

To somehow take on the role of a villain and return to my real body.

Thus, I rolled and tumbled through the years.

Living as the sole villain in the game for all that time.

Enduring the resentment and hatred of countless people with my whole being.

And in the midst of it all, I ran around like a headless chicken, attending to the protagonist's party, somehow trying to progress the scenario.

And the Result

【Scenario Progress: 95%】

At last.

I succeeded in reaching the conclusion of this long, drawn-out story.

"What are you thinking?"

A cool, smooth voice dropped suddenly and I slowly turned my head towards the voice.

At that moment, I met the stern gaze of a woman staring at me.

Golden hair that shone as if molten from gold.

Ice-cold azure eyes.

Skin as white as snow.

I couldn't help but knit my brows at her unrealistically beautiful appearance. Indeed, it was a face that did not become familiar no matter how many times I saw it.

"Can you not hear me?"

Isabel Yustia.

The cherished daughter of the Yustia Count's family.

The only woman capable of purifying the 'Black Mist' that plagues the continent.

And the original work's main heroine.

I did not bother responding to her question.

After all, no matter what answer I gave, her piercing gaze towards me would never turn into something warm. It was best to simply keep my mouth shut in silence as I was now.

"It seems you have not caught my words? Well, do as you please."

Her tone was quite aggressive, contrary to her soft mumbling voice.

But I paid no heed.

Because her chatter was of no importance to me.

"Fortunately, the tea hasn't cooled yet. Please, take a seat for now."

A familiar place.

And familiar lines.

It’s certain.

She intends to kill me right here, right now.

By using some unknown deadly poison cleverly laced in the tea cup.

【Scenario Progress: 96%】

The progress bar surged at an incredible timing.

It didn't take long for suspicion to turn into certainty.

'Stay sharp.'

Though my head felt like it could explode at any moment, what I had to do first was clear.

I unhesitatingly drank from the tea cup laced with the deadly poison without a hint of suspicion.

And so, I was rendered helpless, poisoned by Isabel.

I don't know what kind of poison it was, but since the system itself foretold the ending, she must have prepared an extremely potent one.

The plan was flawless without any errors.

The system also seemed to recognize this, as phrases began updating with a blaring notification sound:

【Scenario Progress: 97%】

【#81 Entering Ending Scenario】

【Commencing the Settlement of 'Villain: Kyle Winfred'】

Everything was perfect.

Yes, except for one thing.

‘Settlement...?’

I blinked my eyes stupidly at the appearance of the unfamiliar word; the incomprehensible phrase about settling Kyle Winfred was driven into my mind like a nail.

Regardless, Isabel, who couldn't possibly know my inner thoughts, spoke in a voice dripping with coldness, "Shall I refill your cup?"

"Please do."

I obediently took my seat as demanded.

After a while, Isabel cautiously poured the steaming tea into my cup.

And then.

"The tea tastes good."

I downed the cup in one gulp.

As I gulped down the scorching tea, Isabel's lips twisted in a strong grimace.

"Really now, you haven't changed one bit, Kyle Winfred."

Isabel ground her teeth audibly; her voice seeping through her tightly closed lips was laced with deep resentment.

"Ludvik is dead, they say."

It was a story I already knew.

How could I not know? After all, I killed that bastard with my own hands.

"He suffered greatly. My long-time friend."

Well, that guy was a spy.

Was there any reason to leave alive someone who would ruin the Empire through treason, kidnapping, and hostage situations in the near future?

"You beheaded my nursemaid for blasphemy."

Yeah, I remember.

She was the woman who kept secretly poisoning Isabel's food.

It was an unavoidable action for the sake of progressing the scenario.

"You tarnished my honor by spreading vile rumors in high society."

That wasn't me, though?

"Blinded by jealousy, you drove Derek to the brink repeatedly."

This too was unavoidable.

That bastard Derek wouldn't have grown without being pushed to the edge like that.

It was my own version of tough love.

"I've wondered why God allows the continued existence of a human like you."

Her every word dripped with thick hatred. I didn't utter a single word in response to her. I simply silently drank the tea she graciously served. And then...

"Guhkk...!"

It didn't take long for the poison to take effect.

Soon, the cells throughout my body began to contort, and dark blood trickled from the corners of my mouth.

Isabel watched me in that state, tears streaming down her face as she laughed.

【Scenario Progress: 98%】

The end was drawing nearer.

"Urghhh...!"

Eventually, I spat out the blood pooling in my mouth.

Experiencing excruciating pain for the first time in my life, my muscles began to spasm uncontrollably.

"...I curse you."

Isabel gritted her teeth, clenching her fist with trembling hands, watching until the very end as I writhed in agony. As if she had been waiting for this day for a long time.

【Scenario Progress: 99%】

My breathing rapidly grew faint.

The sharp pain I had felt also gradually began to dull.

And then…

【Scenario Progress: 100%】

【The scenario has ended】

Ah.

It's all over.

As I turned my head to meet Isabel's gaze for the last time, her startled face wavered.

She clutched at her chest with trembling hands.

With a voice shaking terribly, her breaths intermingled, she…

—..........you...

….muttered something, her lips moving.

'Why is she acting like that?'

A fleeting curiosity arose, but I quickly dismissed the thought.

After all, I would soon return to my real body.

Not the body of the sole villain Kyle Winfred in this game, but my own body as the university student Lee Seung-jun.

It was then.

【Settlement Complete】

【Synchronization Rate: 98%】

【Insufficient Synchronization Rate】

The system window suddenly refreshed.

My brain, flashing blankly, sluggishly processed the information.

'Wait, it says insufficient...?'

Why?

Why would it spout such nonsense about insufficient synchronization rate when the scenario was about to end?

Did I miss something?

I mimicked Kyle's vile actions to the letter from what I could remember, didn't I?

And just a few minutes ago, it clearly said it was an ending scenario...!

【Notification】

【You failed to clear】

I wanted to shout immediately, but I couldn't even let out a sound.

My entire body gradually grew cold and stiff, as if bound by ropes.

Amidst my fading consciousness, the sporadic updates of the system window came into view.

【Penalty Incurred!】

【☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐】

'...Huh?'

Wait, a penalty?

What kind of absurd situation is this...!

【Regression will commence】

The word 'regression' flooded into my mind and I grit my teeth momentarily at the unreasonable regression.

Bzzzt—

As a ringing sound distantly echoed, my field of vision narrowed; an overwhelming sense of weakness followed, enveloping my entire being.

Shortly after.

【Wishing you good luck】

The ceiling grew distant.
