After that incident, one night, Yisheng was on duty with Zhao Jixiang.

Zhao Jixiang had been asking Yisheng who that mysterious man was, but Yisheng did not tell her. She was trying to avoid worrying about this matter. It was not the first time that Song Anchen and played a prank on her. When she was in junior high school, in Year Three, she had managed to do well and was admitted to the same high school as Song Anchen. The two families had decided to go to a KTV together to sing and enjoy themselves. Just when they were singing happily, Song Anchen said that he had a gift for her and asked her to come out. At that time, she had been excited and interested as she left the room. However, she had not expected that this gift was a lingering kiss… it was after that time that she lost her first kiss.

With her experience from before, she thought that what had happened was him playing a prank on her. On the other hand, Yisheng was very curious about the matter between Zhao Jixiang and Xiao Zhuozi. Zhao Jixiang did not hide the story between her and Xiao Zhuozi from Yisheng and told her everything. They had gotten together in their first year of university. Because Zhao Jixiang was not very sensitive about such things, she did not hold back when she hung out with other guys, always causing Xiao Zhuozi to be jealous. Xiao Zhuozi and Song Anchen were good friends, and Song Anchen had many girls that liked him but he refused to interact with any of the girls. The women that were around Song Anchen wanted to get close to him but could not. Thus, they would often make use of Xiao Zhuozi to try to get close to Song Anchen. Naturally, when Zhao Jixiang saw such things, she would feel very uncomfortable. She found it unacceptable that there were so many women surrounding her boyfriend, no matter the reason. Thus, she directly broke up with him. Xiao Zhuozi on the other hand thought that she had broken up with him because she fell for someone else and thought that he was the victim. From then on, the two of them refused to acknowledge each other.

However, neither of them expected that they would be interning at the same hospital after they graduated from university. They were even interning at the same department. They had originally wanted to continue treating each other like strangers, but they were unable to forget each other and they knew that what happened in the past was a misunderstanding. Yet the two of them were stubborn and refused to give in. That was until Xiao Zhuozi bumped into Zhao Jixiang and a man shopping. He could not stand it anymore and exploded. It was only after that he found out that it was a misunderstanding. That man was her cousin, she was accompanying her cousin to buy a gift for her aunt. However, these were all unimportant. The most important thing was that the two of them have settled their differences and were back together, as good as ever.

When Yisheng heard Zhao Jixiang’s story, she could not help laughing, “I didn’t realize that you are so devoted. You dated for one year, but could not forget about him for four years.”

Zhao Jixiang did not think that it was such a big deal, “What’s four years? Some people cling to their first partner their whole life. Yisheng, some people are just that strange. They’ll only like one person for their whole life.”

Yisheng trembled and she laughed uneasily. Zhao Jixiang had originally wanted to talk more about it but was interrupted by the bell. Yisheng said with a smile, “That’s the area you’re in charge of. Go to Ward 163 and have a look, someone pressed the bell.”

Jixiang stood up and walked out of the duty room, looking disappointed.

There was no one around at that moment. Yisheng’s eyes that had been twinkling lowered, and no one could see the emotions in her eyes. Some people would only like one person for their whole life. Perhaps, her whole life was already ruined. She sighed, and casually took out a ‘Medical Care’ book from the drawer to flip through. She rested her head in one hand and flipped the book with her other hand. The rate at which she was flipping through the book was extremely fast. She was just skimming through it.

Suddenly, another bell rang. She looked up to check. It was still Zhao Jixiang’s area, but Zhao Jixiang had yet to return, so naturally, she went instead.

When she walked to Ward G31, it was a private ward, which was known as a high-class ward. Yisheng knocked on the door but no one opened it. She was stunned, could it be that the patient’s condition worsened? She scared herself with those thoughts and pushed the door open, but was startled by the sight in front of her.

The patient was about seventeen to eighteen years old, he had gauze tied on his head, and he was eating popcorn as he crossed his legs and shook them. He was holding a magazine in one hand and was enjoying himself. He was a little rascal-like boy who did not look like he was feeling uncomfortable and needed help. Yisheng was slightly angry, “Mister, you shouldn’t joke around like this.”

The man who was completely absorbed in whatever he was doing finally moved his gaze from the magazine to glance at her, saying in slight shock, “Oh, a nurse came?”

Yisheng tried her best to keep calm. She said, “You rang the bell just now.”

“I was just bored, so I rang it randomly. I didn’t expect that the nurses would really come when I call. The service attitude of this hospital is not bad,” He suddenly jumped up from the bed and sat on the edge of the bed, “Sister Nurse, I’m so bored, come and chat with me.”

“Since you’re fine, I’ll leave now,” She could not be bothered to pay attention to this sort of patient that had nothing better to do. She was about to turn around when that boy suddenly rolled on the bed and yelled, “It hurts, I’m in so much pain.”

Yisheng stopped her movements and gritted her teeth. She turned around and reluctantly walked to the bedside, glaring at the troublemaker, “Which part of your body is hurting?”

“It hurts here,” He pointed at his heart, “My heart is so painful, Sister Nurse is ignoring me.”

Yisheng smiled slyly, narrowing her eyes and patting his cheek. After that, she started to pinch his cheeks roughly. The boy was yelping due to Yisheng’s sudden attack.

“Remember, nurses only take care of sick patients, not bored patients,” After she said that, Yisheng tossed her hair and left, not even turning her head back once. She left a stunned boy holding the cheeks that she had patted, dazed.

When Yisheng returned to the duty room, she saw that the duty room had another person. Zhao Jixiang was sitting on Xiao Zhuozi’s thigh and removing the skin of an apple. Yisheng did not know whether she should enter the room or leave and hesitated. She then gritted her teeth and decided to walk in without caring.

“Hi, Xiao Zhuozi,” Yisheng greeted normally, and Xiao Zhuozi was stunned that someone had arrived.

“Yisheng, where have you been? A few bells were ringing in your area. Doctor Song said that you should go there quickly when you come back,” Zhao Jixiang acted as if no one was there, continuing to peel her apples and was even very considerate, shoving some apple slices to Xiao Zhuozi for him to eat.

“Why didn’t you go?”

“Doctor Song is not interested in me. He specifically said your name and asked you to go,” Zhao Jixiang sniffed, looking sad.

Xiao Zhuozi pinched her arm, gritted his teeth, and said, “You can go if you want to, I’ll help you talk to him.”

“I only have you in my heart, darling, come here, eat some peaches,” Zhao Jixiang hugged him, sweetly acting cute towards him. Xiao Zhuozi opened his lips to eat the fruits she passed him, Zhao Jixiang acting cute obviously worked very well on him. Yisheng saw how nauseatingly sweet they were acting and could not help but tremble, goosebumps all over her skin. There were many ways to deal with this solution, but the best method was to leave.

When she arrived at Ward 37, she stood at the door for a while and saw someone wearing a white coat doing a physical examination through the door. Why was she so tragic? They even had the same shift. She gritted her teeth and lightly knocked on the door before she opened it, walking in. At that moment, Song Anchen turned around to look at her, giving her instructions, “Get the blood pressure monitor.”

Yisheng nodded her head and instantly left. As expected, he did not treat the ‘forced kiss’ from a few days ago as something serious. Why did she still care about it? Yisheng hit her own head. It was all her fault for overthinking things.

Yisheng was continuously ordered around by Song Anchen, for example, he would ask her to get a blood pressure machine, or the case file of the patient, and after that, he would ask her to get a thermometer. Yisheng would normally bring everything around because these were medical items that were necessary for physical examinations. However, she was distracted and did not enter the correct state. When Song Anchen finally lost his patience with her because he had to keep giving her instructions for her to do things, he finally frowned, and criticized severely, “You are trained in nursing. Shouldn’t you know that as a nurse, your job is to help the doctor and not cause additional trouble for the doctor?”

She gritted her teeth and glared at him angrily, “I’m sorry, I’m not as outstanding as you.”

Song Anchen took a deep breath and no longer paid any attention to her, continuing to do the physical examination for the patient. Yisheng did not want to continue standing there and getting despised by Song Anchen. She instantly turned around and left, returning to the entrance of the duty room. She just happened to see Zhao Jixiang and Xiao Zhuozi flirting and kissing. She walked back out, not wanting to disturb them. She wandered back and forth in the corridor until she happened to meet Song Anchen, who had finished the physical examinations. The two of them met eyes for a moment. Yisheng wanted to completely ignore him and walk off.

However, a certain someone did not allow her wish to come through. At the moment she walked past him, he grabbed her shoulder.

“Ye Yisheng, do you have something against me?” Song Anchen showed his handsome face and even flashed her his trademark smile.

Yisheng struggled slightly and broke free. Obviously, Song Anchen did not intend to hold on tightly and not let her go. Yisheng smiled in response, “How could it be? Doctor Song is the elite, I should be worshipping you, why would I have something against you?”

“Is that so?” His slender eyes narrowed into a slit and he looked at her mischievously, “I’ll give you a ride home tonight.”

“There’s no need!” She objected instantly without hesitation.

“I thought that you said that you don’t have anything against me?” He was still smiling.

Did he think that if she had no problem with him, he could give her a ride home? Yisheng did not know how to answer. If she rejected him again, he would definitely insist and say that she had something against him; If she agreed, she would do it unwillingly. She hesitated for a long time before she finally agreed with much reluctance, “I’ll have to trouble Doctor Song then.”

“It’s no trouble,” Song Anchen smiled and prepared to leave before he suddenly thought of something. “It seems that our shifts are the same. In the future, I can send you back, seeing that you’ve called me ‘Little Brother Song’ for so many years.”

“…” What sort of logic is that?

“Could it be that you don’t know? In the schedule, we’re on duty at the same time,” He gave her a brilliant smile.

“…” She really wanted to die at this moment. How could it be so coincidental?

“Alright, you can continue with your work,” He walked off. He left behind Yisheng, who was still standing there like a fool. She suddenly felt that she could not deal with the consequences of calling him ‘Little Brother Song’ for so many years.

T/N: Hehe thank you Platypus for recommending this book HAHAHA hopefully it lives up to your expectations~ Anyway cause this book might lack a bit in terms of fluffiness when it comes to chapters about the past, Married to a Disabled Man in the 70’s is super duper fluffy hahahaha. Maybe everyone’s already read it but it’s sooo heartwarming + Platypus has been working hard at TLing it!!

Anyway! Just a heads-up, this chapter is a two-part chapter!

She wandered in the corridor for some time and she thought that the two of them in the room must be done with their kissing, right? She returned to the duty room and saw that only Zhao Jixiang was left inside. Zhao Jixiang seemed to have waited for Yisheng for a very long time. She saw Yisheng, who had just entered the room, and hurriedly waved her hand to call her over, “Your phone has been ringing for a long time.” Yisheng was stunned and took out her phone from the drawer and checked the missed calls. It was from her senior.

She sent a message, “Why is senior trying to contact me?”

After she sent the text message, Yisheng thought about how she should change her number. She had kept using a foreign number and could not even bear to make a phone call.

After a while, she received a text.

“I heard that you’re on duty today. Do you want me to send you home?”

Yisheng replied, “There’s no need, I can go back myself. Senior, you can go do whatever you need to do.”

Another text arrived, “Alright, take care on your way back.”

Yisheng did not reply anymore. She put her phone back into the drawer and began to flip through that thick book, ‘Medical Care’, again. Zhao Jixiang, who was sitting next to her stretched out her neck and asked, her expression full of curiosity, “Yisheng, I want to know, do you have a boyfriend?”

“Hm? I’m obviously the type of person that doesn’t have a boyfriend.”

“Hehe,” Zhao Jixiang suddenly laughed slyly. Yisheng moved away from her, feeling uncomfortable, “Zhao Jixiang, what are you thinking of doing?”

“Yisheng ah, we’re already 25 years old,” Zhao Jixiang got close to her again and squeezed into her personal space, sharing a chair with her. Zhao Jixiang placed an arm around Yisheng’s shoulder and said, “Time doesn’t wait for anyone. In the theories made by many people, we are considered junior leftovers. We still dare to continue fighting for men, so we’re also called the ‘Leftover Fighters’.”

Yisheng narrowed her eyes, “What exactly do you want to say?”

“It’s Sunday tomorrow, I’ll bring you on a blind date,” Zhao Jixiang said quickly.

“What? A blind date? I won’t go,” Yisheng widened her eyes, hurriedly turning her head away to ignore Zhao Jixiang.

Zhao Jixiang continued to stick to Yisheng, pulling on Yisheng’s arm and shaking it, “Let’s go, let’s go, just take it as you’re accompanying me there.”

“Eh? Don’t you already have Xiao Zhuozi? Why are you still going on a blind date?”

“My Mom doesn’t know that I have a boyfriend, she helped me find a blind date partner and asked me to go tomorrow. My life is so hard!” Zhao Jixiang started to act pathetic.

Yisheng gazed at the sky for a long time, “If it’s to accompany you, I can consider going for it.”

“Aiya, Yisheng is the best, muacks~” Zhao Jixiang was also happy and directly kissed Yisheng’s face.

“You left saliva on my face,” Yisheng hurriedly wiped her face and pushed her away from her seat, allowing Yisheng to occupy her whole chair again without having to squeeze.

Zhao Jixiang walked away without complaints or regrets, even winking at Yisheng. Yisheng chuckled, then begun to flip through ‘Medical Care’, bored. However, her thoughts had suddenly returned to what Zhao Jixiang said about leftover women. She was 25 this year and had officially entered the ranks of leftover women. In her present state, how could she open her heart and look for a boyfriend? She was worried and pulled at her hair in annoyance. Sigh, it was a tragedy.

(T/N: Leftover women is the Chinese term for women that are above a certain age and are believed to be ‘leftover’, such that they would not be able to find a husband. It’s quite an… old-fashioned kind of thinking)

***

When her shift ended, the next shift of nurses replaced Yisheng and Zhao Jixiang. Zhao Jixiang was naturally taken away by her ‘escort’. Yisheng sent the lovey-dovey couple off with her gaze and pursed her lips, walking out of the hospital with a feeling of emptiness. She shuffled her feet and lowered her head, looking quite downcast. Suddenly, there was the sound of a car honking behind her, she instinctively gave way and took a look at the car.

Ah, the license plate number is five ‘8’s! Isn’t this the Bentley that had splashed her with water on her first day of work? That car suddenly stopped in front of her and the car window was lowered. Song Anchen told her, “Get in the car.”

It was at this moment that Yisheng remembered the matter of Song Anchen giving her a ride home. She hesitated for a moment, then opened the rear car door and got in. The Bentley drove off after a while. There was an Audi Q7 stopped behind the Bentley and the man inside looked straight ahead. At last, with a self-mocking smile, he casually lit up a cigarette and took a deep breath. He took big breaths but did not breathe out much. This sort of smoking method was very harmful to the lungs. Normally, when he smoked, he would only smoke in a very casual manner, breathing out the same amount that he breathed in. Perhaps he felt a little upset after waiting for the whole night. After he finished smoking a cigarette, he put it out and started the car.

***

In the Bentley, Yisheng kept looking out of the car even though there was nothing much to look at outside. Song Anchen glanced at her through the rearview mirror, “Are you hungry?”

“I’m not hungry,” She paused for a moment and said, looking at the back of his head.

Song Anchen did not say anything for a long time. After pondering for an extended period, he said, “Where’s your house?”

“Hua Yuan Estate.”

(T/N: Just for reference, Hua Yuan means garden!)

“It’s very close to where I stay.”

Of course, she knew. She rolled her eyes at the back of his head. This fierce Bentley that seemed to have drunk Red Bull and the dumb bad driver were the culprits that had caused her to be covered in water. How could she not remember them?

(T/N: Not super sure about the Red Bull reference, but it could be a reference to the wings part of the Red Bull. The second part about him being dumb uses the reference of Sanlu milk powder, saying that he drank Sanlu milk powder while growing up, you can search it up! It’s the famous milk powder incident)

When the car reached the parking lot of Hua Yuan estate, Yisheng hurriedly thanked him, “Thank you, Little Brother Song.” She had originally wanted to open the door and get out, but unexpectedly, Song Anchen had got out before her and had helped her to open the car door in a gentlemanly manner.

She sat in the car and raised her gaze to look at him, confused.

“What’s the matter? You can’t bear to come out? Do you want to stay at your Little Brother Song’s house for the night?” He used his thin and long eyes to smile, causing Yisheng’s whole body to tremble. She was extremely scared of this sort of smile. It caused her to have goosebumps all over.

The two of them remained silent, walking with one person in front and the other behind. When they reached the block where Yisheng stayed, Yisheng muttered, “I’ve reached home, thank you.”

Song Anchen said, “I’m hungry.”

He did not say it any earlier or later and had waited till they reached the block of apartments she stayed at before he said such words. What he wanted was obvious. Yisheng gritted her teeth, “You can come to my house and I’ll make you something to eat.”

“Alright,” He said with a smile.

His evil intentions were showing. Yisheng completely despised him in her heart.
