Volume 1 | Chapter 2: April – Part 1

April. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom on the day of the entrance ceremony.

The rain had continued on for the past few days, so I was worried all the flowers will scatter away. But Kazu-nii said this to me, “I doubt there’ll be a problem.”

This is the world of an otome game — apparently, there’s no way it’ll rain or have no cherry blossoms on an essential event like the school entrance opening ceremony.

The cherry blossoms looked beautiful in the bright blue sky. If I could, I want to do something stylish like flower viewing here. Too bad the entrance ceremony is about to begin. That is why I’m heading to the auditorium right now.

In Seika Maria Secondary Academy school grounds, there is an auditorium where they’ll hold ceremonies, gymnasium, dojo, inside pool, old church, and other facilities.

A priest even lives in the old church and holds morning service every Sunday. The students here aren’t obligated to attend; if you are interested, you can join in. According to Kazu-nii, he remembers one of the capture targets passionately attend the morning service though. Well, I don’t plan on attending either, so I’m sure I won’t meet them there.

By the way, it seems the game starts with a scene in the church.

The heroine gets lost and finds her way inside the church. There she’ll meet [someone] who she could only see their silhouette because of the backlighting. The only thing she can ascertain is this [someone] was a male student. He will tell her the legend this academy. As her heart beats fast, she’ll hear an announcement informing her the entrance ceremony was starting. The heroine reluctantly leaves the church to head to the auditorium.

‘Who exactly was that……?’ She’ll think, holding such emotion in her heart. With that, the heroine’s high school life begins.

If you can’t see the other person because of the backlighting, then I’m sure it’s because their back is facing towards the sun. In that case, all you have to do is move your position a little. Plus, won’t your eyes get used to it as the other person speaks? Can’t she remember their voice for later? The scenario makes me want to point at all the holes, but if this is an otome game throbbing with fluttering love, that [someone] staying as a mystery will be more beautiful.

Incidentally, the heroine ends up being late for the ceremony because of this detour, so she’ll get lectured by my cousin, Kazu-nii. That means that [someone] isn’t Kazu-nii for sure.

A passing thought went through my mind. I decided to check where the church is before I head to the auditorium.

On the said church’s door, there was a piece of paper saying, “No entry due to contractors” pinned on it. I was interested in exactly what kind of contractors came to do what. Then again this church looks pretty old; it might need repairs everywhere. Also, since it took pains for me to find this church, so I wanted to take a look inside…… But let’s give up. I can go in and have a look later at a different time.

I continued to walk along the pavement and soon spotted the auditorium immediately. It was a relatively new building. There was noticeboard near the entrance, and it listed each class’s student numbers and their names. Next to each of the student’s names, there was a seat number for the auditorium. It looks like each class is in grouped seats, and the seat number wasn’t in order of our names. That’s a bit weird. First, I went to find my name and checked my auditorium seat number.

I, Niimi Shiori, is in Year 1, Class B.

Next, I went to find a specific person’s name. I heard her default name from Kazu-nii, but it’s not 100% certain it’ll be……. Oh, I found it!

Year 1, Class B — Aikawa Maria.

She was listed way before my name. I guess I missed her the first time. I wonder if her name was in the list Kazu-nii had. The only thing we did back then was look for capture targets’ names.

Anyways, our luck looks good if Maria-jou and I are in the same class. I stepped into the auditorium after I checked her seat number.

The auditorium was like a small concert hall with a stage and seats facing each other. According to Kazu-nii’s info, the heroine is going to be late for the ceremony. There’s no one yet on her seat. I sat in my own before I stole glances at the entrance. I wonder if she’s coming yet~ I hope she comes soon.

When you think of heroines from stories, you think of an invincible girl who hot-looking guys will pour their love on her. I wonder what kind of girl she was — I’m really, really interested. Is she the type where she’s normal in the beginning and gradually grows to be more and more beautiful? There’s also the type where her personality is much more appealing than her looks, which works too.

Or perhaps she’s going to be a beautiful girl from the start who’ll catch everyone’s eyes and holds them? Yup, I’m super excited.

“Hey, stop being so restless. You’re annoying.”

“Eh?”

Someone called me out with a grumpy tone. I was surprised and turned to look at my side. The boy sitting beside me was giving me a scowl. I only paid attention to Maria-jou’s name, so I didn’t bother to look at the names of the other people beside me. Which is why I don’t know who he was. He’s probably my classmate though.

“I’m sorry,” I apologized in compliance. He looked surprised for a second. I wonder why though. When someone warns you with a proper reason, you’ll apologize. Isn’t that normal?

“Ah, no…… Well……. If you understand then that’s fine,” he mumbled before he turned his eyes to the stage in the auditorium.

He had short hair and a face that still gives a youthful impression. But his features were virile, the type where you look forward to how he looks in the future. Since we were sitting, I couldn’t tell how tall he was. Still, from what I can tell from his clothed body, his shoulders are quite wide. I can see he has a rather manly figure.

“I was trying to find someone I know. Thanks for warning me,” I said, giving him my thanks.

“……You can look for them after the ceremony,” he replied. His words were blunt, but he didn’t seemed angry.

I followed his eyes to the stage. It seems the ceremony just started.

The entrance ceremony went by without a problem. There were speeches from important people and so on. It was boring, just like I predicted.

However, when a male student, the student representative, appeared on the stage, suddenly all the girls in the auditorium made a noise.

I can tell why even from afar. That senior was the honor student type, good-looking guy.

“Congratulations to all the new students on your admission to this academy today. I welcome you as the current student representative. I am the student president, Tsukishima. First, I would like to say we are truly happy every one of you will become a member of this academy along with us. Let us work hard together hand in hand….”

The student representative continued his greetings with this and that. He must be the student president, Tsukishima, Kazu-nii talked about.

But I have to say, his voice is good! He spoke in a calm and gentle manner while his voice was a little low and carried far. It’s the kind of voice where you want him to sweetly whisper in your ear. On top of that, he looks kind. I’m sure there’s a lot of things you can depend on him for.

Jeez~ I’m so jealous of you, Maria-jou!

“Shut up…….” I heard a low voice mutter.

My eyes widen in shock. Eh? Did I talk out loud? Huh?

The male student sitting beside me looked really displeased. But since he isn’t looking at me, he didn’t mean me then? I tried to read his expression and that’s when our eyes met.

He grimaced and spoke to me, “Are you weak to good looking guys too?”

What kind of question is that to someone you just met? I stared at him in shock. “…… Don’t you get happy when you see a beautiful person? Don’t you think it’s a sight for sore eyes?”

“Looks aren’t everything for humans,” he responded.

“Hmm, I wonder about that. I mean in order to improve your own looks, you have to put effort in it. I think having an appearance that gives a good impression to the people around you is an important component in making human relationships go smoothly. Well, yeah, there’ll be a difference with what you’re born with, but I still think putting effort will make a lot of change. Even if you look good to begin with, if you neglect it, the difference between someone who pays attention and doesn’t is striking once you go past your 30’s. Ah, but I heard it’s better for guys to polish their personality and talents instead of their looks. Once you’re past your 50’s, the type of lifestyle you followed will show up on your face. A man with a good personality will look handsome too. …….Well, just kidding. This is just me telling you what my cousin always tells me.”

He looked taken aback at all the words that rolled out of my mouth.

“You’re weird…….” He muttered.

“Really? Well, I have no clue how adult men think. But I’m sure that Tsukishima-senpai works hard. I mean, he’s the school president. I’m sure he’s someone you can rely on,” I concluded.

He once again turned to look at our student president.

“Are you polishing yourself too?” He smoothly muttered those words.

I turned to look at him but he wasn’t looking my way anymore. Still, I could tell he was turning red from the corner of his eyes to his ears. I wonder if he’s embarrassed by his own question.

“I’m still trying my best. I’ve been taking care of my appearance but when you’re in your teens, you want to train your body first, so I’m putting that as my priority.”

“You play some sort of sport?”

“I jog every morning.”

“Hmm~”

It looks like he has a better opinion of me now. I felt pleased with myself as I watched the entrance ceremony continued.

The event where Maria-jou comes late to the ceremony happened near the end. Actually, isn’t she way too late? This was a rare speech from our Student President, Tsukishima, and she didn’t listen to a single word. Why did she even bother to come?

Maria-jou came in from the entrance while arguing with Kazu-nii. He guided her not to her assigned seat but a seat at the very back. And maybe because everyone is getting bored too, they all turned to look at the newcomer who showed up noisily. It goes without saying that the auditorium was filled with whispering and mumbling again.

The girl besides Kazu-nii was a beauty without a doubt.

I can tell even from here. She had silky, long, and light chestnut hair. She had good style too. Her face was well-proportioned and also because of her large eyes, you couldn’t help but be drawn to her.

And, and, and on top of all that!!

The double door of the auditorium opened wide, letting the cherry blossoms in full bloom peek in. There, the beautiful girl stepped with the sunlight behind her, shining like a halo. It was like a scene from a movie.

The beautiful girl tried to sneak into her seat without disturbing the ceremony, but it was already too late since she was arguing with Kazu-nii earlier. Kazu-nii who escorted her was also eye-catching. Coupled together, they stood out a lot. The Kazu-nii beside her almost looked like a knight. Even though he’s wearing a suit.

This must be what a heroine is! Maria-jou, you’re amazing!

My spirits rose high again, and that’s when my neighbor stood up sharply. Ehhh?

“Aikawa…….?” He mumbled Maria-jou’s last name and left his seat.

However, the seats in the auditorium were packed close to each other. If someone wants to move, their neighbors have to make space for them to be able to walk.

Neighbor. In other words, me. I was pushed to the side forcibly. I let out a weird sound as my body pressed against the back of my seat. It looks like I wasn’t even in his sight anymore.

He moved until he was in Maria-jou’s field of vision and was eventually stopped by a teacher.

“Tsukkun!” Maria-jou let out with surprise. Eh? They know each other? “Wow! I didn’t think we’ll reunite here! It’s been so long! It’s Maria. Do you remember me?”

Well, yeah, of course he remembers. He was the one who said your name first.

“There’s no way……. Ah, n-no,” he swallowed his words in the end. Still, he continued to look like he was in deep thought. “What are you doing here? I thought you moved to live with your relatives……. Did you move back? Where are you living now?”

“Y-Yeah. It’s because of my relatives’……. work. I came back here to this city.” Maria-jou doesn’t seem like she wants to explain in detail. She made her words a little bit vague.

More importantly, voices carry well in an auditorium. Shouldn’t they stop discussing their personal information like this?

“But I’m really happy. I was thinking I didn’t have anyone I know here, and there you are in this high school, Tsukkun,” Maria-jou said, smiling bashfully. With the way her cheeks dyed in pink, I couldn’t help but think she was really cute.

“Don’t call me Tsukkun. ……We aren’t kids anymore.”

“Eh~? Why? Tsukkun is Tsukkun.”

Tskkun’s words were blunt and curt as he turned to look away at the side. I’m sure his nickname in his class was predetermined right at this minute.

Maria-jou looked like she didn’t knew why he looked away and was confused. Still, she looked like she was enjoying herself.

“Hey, Tsukkun, please get along with me again,” she told him as she smiled sweetly. She tried to peer into his face by bending her body with upturned eyes. I’m sure Maria-jou’s large eyes reflected in Tsukkun’s line of vision right now. I can’t tell since I’m too far but I bet his ears were flushed in deep red.

He couldn’t hide his panic and answered stiffly as he continued to shift his eyes elsewhere. “Y-Yeah…….”

Out! Tsukkun! No matter how shy you feel right now, that cracked voice you made right now is a little bit uncool. Yet it looks like Maria-jou didn’t think the same as me. She smiled like she was satisfied with Tsukkun’s response.

“Then I’m going to go back to my seat.”

Now that she mentioned it, she should have been at the very back near her new seat. Just when did she moved to Tsukkun’s side? Maria-jou spun back and returned to her original position. In the end, there was only Tsukkun and the teacher grabbing his arm left behind.

“……Aikawa……” Tsukkun uttered with a monologue tone like he went off into his own world. However, he was ushered back to his seat by the teacher trying to bring order back. Yeah, that’s right. Beside me.

Afterwards, until the ceremony ended, Tsukkun acted weird. His eyes would sadly soften like he was recalling something and let out small sighs.

By now, I understand everything. He was one of Maria-jou’s capture targets. The ‘childhood friend’ target for sure! Just now must have been their first meeting event.

And since their conversation echoed throughout the auditorium, pretty much all of the new students knew they were acquaintances…
