Chapter 015: Unicorn
Britton’s climate in the cold days is like the northerly Arctic circle. Similarly, it’s also like the climate in China’s Heilongjiang Province.
The plants grew so vigorously without man needing to tend and care for them. They’re thick and sturdy and seemed to have originated from the Jurassic Period, but unlike the hot and humid environment in the tropics, the surroundings were very dry.
Kailar walked about a thousand meters forwards into the inner parts of the forest. Thick roots and ravines greeted him along the way. He was groggy and deadbeat then, suddenly, he found a holy place—a small spring!
From the looks of it, the animals nearby had ran to the lakes as their source of water. The bigger ones most often than not frequently tripped on the outskirts of the small spring to find their prey. It was their good luck. Majority of the animals here were small and thus provided a good source of meat for the predator.
Having walked over a thousand meters long, Kailar felt extremely dirty so he swiftly undressed himself and bathed his whole body on the spring. The temperature felt good and comfortable.
He looked around and examined the scenic view. Bends of watery pools could be seen and the rocks formed an earthly depression carved by the likes of mother nature herself.
Soon, under the baptism of the spring Kailar called holy, he was slowly lulled to sleep as fatigue took over.
When he awoke, it was already sunset.
Today’s expedition could only end this far. Kailar had no regrets. Finding this spring either in the cool summer or turbid winter, it brought to him an interesting discovery and may bring about significant benefits in the near future.
Drying himself, Kailar picked up his clothing and tugged it on quickly.
Then he looked up. The sight he saw stunned him to the core.
He’s not sure when but many of the small animals have gathered around him in circles. Rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, and so on stared at Kailar with big round eyes.
Ah… that’s right.
This spring was their only source of water to replenish themselves without fear from those large animals. He himself had lied inside the water spring that they did not dare come over. They’d never seen a human before. It was only proper that they grow curious of him.
Kailar was stunned. Shaking his head, he smiled bitterly.
He looked around again. This time, he found a figure—a relatively medium sized animal. A white horse.
This white horse hadn’t grown to its full size yet. It was a baby. Hidden in between the woods, its pair of big bright eyes looked at Kailar. It hadn’t blinked for fear that it’d miss any movements Kailar would make and it also didn’t to dare to come closer.
Kailar smiled softly. In the next second, he twisted his hand and a radiant array of light brightened. It was a sort of supplementary magic which helped calm the mind. He found this sort of magic necessary so as to not cause a panic or turmoil amongst the small animals.
The vibrant white light slowly circulated the air. Soon the mind’s of the small animals slowly stabilized. They began to calm down from their agitation and anxiousness.
A little rabbit who was vigilant, slowly step by step reached the spring. The rabbit watched Kailar’s movement. Seeing as he wasn’t attacking, the rabbit quickly dunked its head and drank the water. It’s two ears twitched very lovely.
Seeing as Kailar hadn’t attacked the rabbit, the other animals who’d been thirsty all day long suddenly swarmed around the spring and began licking the water.
Kailar was keenly aware that the animals knew the rules. Dirt and grime should never touch the spring. It was their only source of water. They seemed to have learned these over the years when dirt accumulated the spring till they could no longer drink from the spring. After a few hard lessons, the small animals no longer dared to take the risk.
Kailar couldn’t help but laugh. There was a saying that the reason humans are able to dominate the earth and stand above the ecosystem was because of evolution but from the looks of it, these animals are also progressing despite the limitations of their brains.
The horse which hid in between the woods suddenly appeared. It paced itself and a crisp sound of its hooves clicked the ground slowly going towards the spring.
The animals who saw the horse coming towards them grew anxious and quickly avoided it.
Kailar hadn’t bothered looking at the horse in full detail until now. When he looked up, his eyes widened and his mouth opened. He couldn’t utter a word. He slapped his cheek and shook his head to make sure he wasn’t just seeing things.
It’s… its…
A unicorn!
Kailar was shocked by its golden colored skin which he thought was a pure white.
His mind suddenly went back to the conversations he had with Leyton about devil beasts. Leyton once said that devil beasts possess tremendous power who can easily tear a small hole in the ground and had killed many people.
He really thought they were ugly hideous looking creatures! But what was this cute thing?! He sighed helplessly, he really couldn’t trust people. Otherwise, he’d just get false information.
But from the looks of it, these devil beasts are simply a fantasy creature told in many legends. The brave knight fighting the dragon to save the princess… the mythical unicorn roaming the skies… the one-eyed giant guarding the treasures inside a cave…
Surely they can’t be a devil beast. Rather, they’re more like a mythical creature.
The thought of this pained his head.
Historians are also a farce. They actually dismissed these mythical creatures as nothing but a legend passed down by people. But then again, these creatures have been pushed to the brink of extinction that historians have no plausible reason to think of these creatures as real.
The unicorn passed in front of Kailar. It’s modest head swayed side to side as it watched Kailar with its big, bright eyes. Its horn was a little too long that it’s tip almost pierced Kailar’s face.
Kailar smiled gently. He could sense no malice from the unicorn. Slowly, he lifted his hand and gently placed it under its chin, petting the unicorn gently.
Animals and the like usually loved to scratch their belly or chin, but much to their dismay, they themselves are unable to. The best way to grow closer and intimate with an animal is to pet them—preferably in a place they’re unable to reach.
Sure enough, the little unicorn snorted happily. It was quite comfortable.
Kailar smiled and watched the unicorn enjoy itself from Kailar’s petting as it drank the water.
Thereafter, the unicorn lifted its neck and looked at him curiously.
Kailar turned his head towards the setting sun. He couldn’t stay or otherwise, he’d need to stay the night in the forest which he couldn’t do. Red Leaf’s currently in a war and he himself held a prestige title. If he were found missing, the whole of entirety Red Leaf would overturn everything upside down just to search for him.
Kailar needed to go home. His presence helped settle the hearts of his people at ease.
As he walked out of the forest, the unicorn slowly trodded the forest and followed behind.
Smiling bitterly, Kailar who stood under the treehouse waved back to the little unicorn.
Somewhat excited, the unicorn ran to him with a loud neigh.
“Come with me.” Kailar patted the unicorn’s neck and got on top of its body.
They rode back home in silence.
The unicorn was happy, excited, and cheerful as it ran freely on the mainland. Despite its small size, its speed and energy were top notch. Not to mention, its fur complemented Kailar’s white robe.
It was already dark and though it was only five o’clock, there was a great deal of noise and clamor in Red Leaf.
When the people finally calmed themselves, they looked at their lord and the little devil beast he brought with him.
What was it?
Ah, that’s right.
Lord Kailar called it a unicorn.
