Chapter 008: Vineyard

Marius was a small time notorious villain in Red Leaf, knowing the ins and out of the place. He knew which families to provoke and which he could not hence the increase in his notoriety, continuously oppressing others with fear.

As of late, he heard of rumors that the outside was a safe haven, heard that if you settled and farm in the outside, you’d strike gold. But isn’t that a load of bullcrap? The land might be good, but wouldn’t you be toiling all your life? Moreover, there are devil beasts! Those devils… Marius shuddered at the thought of them. Surely they’d ruin his hard-earned labor. Better stay inside the walls where it’s safe.

Unfortunately, Marius had the worst of luck. After stuffing himself full of a good meal, Marius had been beaten bloody red to the point of losing consciousness. Thereafter, a sack was put over his head as they brought him to a place he did not know.

Once arriving at the destination, a basin of cold water splashed his face. His body twitched from the sensation and instantly straightened up only to see many noble knights surrounding him and a small little kid standing in the middle of the knights looking down at Marius.

“Your name is Marius?” The small little child spoke.

“Yes.” He replied disdainfully.

“Change it. I don’t like it. From now on your name is Sibo.” The child spoke once more.

The name Marius and Mary have the same pronunciation. Kailar despised it so and hence ordered the notorious villain change his name.

Marius clenched his fist. “Bullcrap! Why do I have to change my name?!”

But before he could utter any further words, a long stick the width of a thumb slapped the back of his head. The stick snapped in half and redness colored the back of his head.

“I’ll change my name! I’ll change my name!” Marius whimpered as he laid on the floor like a dog near its death.

Marius—no, Sibo straightened his body and knelt on the floor. He smiled, bloody red smeared on his lips. “May I ask the little lord’s name?”

“Who I am is of no importance though I do have one thing you’ll have to do. You can’t refuse it.” The small little child smiled, almost sneering as Sibo believed it to be. If he could, he would punch that child’s pretty face but he couldn’t. There were knights nearby and he dared not move.

……

Three days later.

“Hey, did you hear that Marius guy change his name?”

“That’s not the point! The question is that why this guy hasn’t come to make trouble with us in the past few days?”

“I heard he a bought a land outside the walls of Red Leaf. What could he be planning?”

“But how does he have money to a buy land?”

“Oh, I heard that he went out of the walls and came to one of the lords. Said that there was profit to be made and so eagerly wished to buy land.”

“Tch. No need to talk about farming. Farming is done and dead. He possibly can’t raise his own crops to make a living.”

“I don’t think so. From what I heard, he had a vi… vineyard plantation?”

“What is that? I have never heard of it.”

“Yeah… probably not good to sell.”

Similar words spread like a wildfire throughout Red Leaf and Sibo’s name suddenly became the focus of attention.

Inside the castle, Kailar dressed himself in custom tailored tuxedo similar to the modern era yet managing to retain an antique style. A smirk curved his lips knowing his venture had proven successful.

Based on successful vineyard gardening theory wherein the later generations refined one after another is that it needs to be divided into sections or pieces. The vineyards horizontally aligned one another as it was planted on top of a rhombus-like hill. The innermost part of the plantation was a manor. Below the manor, Kailar had ordered the construction of a wine cellar for future wine brewery.
Under the garden’s of the vineyard is a sealed biogas tank which connects to an outside air pump which only needs pressure to produce methane. Inside the biogas tank is a bacteria which converts excrements and wastes into methane gas.

Abandoned marsh water is an alternative method for fertilizing better manure as opposed to raw soil and hence produces more quality yielding crop. Outside of the vineyard plantation is a newly built cattle house for the later use of domesticated cows, sheep, horses, and pigs.

Kailar planned to educate his people that there are other things besides wheat where they can grow and earn a decent income. Aside from educating the masses, he wished to turn the whole of Red Leaf into a farm produce. It’d be an ecological chain sort of. Red Leaf would be rich in production and his people would not be afraid to eat all their food in one go. They wouldn’t need to starve.

“Sibo, I don’t like your forced smile. Smile only when it’s real. You look really bad right now. You should fix that.” Kailar pointed out.

“Yes, Master.” Sibo nodded vigorously, smiling like a wild dog.

“Well, you did a good job. I will make you my servant in the future, therefore, you must set a good example for the gangster in my Red Leaf that doing good is the only way.”

Sibo nodded once more, so eager and overjoyed.

“Ah, that’s right. I’ll hand over the vineyard to you and offer ten silver coins every month.”

Majority of Camelot’s gold deposits are buried under Ireland’s earthen core. As the two nations are two independent nations, the currency circulated in Camelot were silver coins which are also what the Romans use.

None had yet discovered the dangers of economic control hence the reasoning of silver being thrown around freely here and there. Also, there was no copper based currency as it was only used as a material to cast and make weapons.

But according to conversion, one silver coin can buy about eighty pounds worth of grain of the same value and ten silver coins is almost a farmer’s entire annual income.

“Thank you, Master!” Sibo knelt on the floor and willingly expressed his profound loyalty.

“Do a good job. Let the shrewd men of Red Leaf know that everything can be done if they just do good.”

At least if they follow my script.

Kailar patted Sibo’s shoulder with means to encourage him.

Because Sibo was a guinea pig, a subject placed in trial, Kailar placed much time and effort on him. Kailar knew fairly well Sibo would become a successful man so long as he does what is told.

And with the intervention of his father, Sibo amounted over twenty-five square meters worth of vineyards.
