[Close Call?]

Madeline arriving at the worst possible time.

“Who’s there?!”

“I think that was a girl’s voice!”

Of course, they heard Madeline’s shout. Similarly, Madeline also heard the men’s voices.

“Huh? There’re other people here?” But her tone held no hint of wariness. She likely thought they were from the academy. Given the circumstances, it was only reasonable for her not to suspect them as outsiders. After all, the dungeon was located on the campus.

Wait, now wasn’t the time to be analyzing these details.

“Madeline, stay back!”

“Huh?”

I yelled, realizing that I couldn’t allow her to approach any closer since things could turn dangerous. I knew that my action would expose my own presence, but that was a lesser concern compared to letting the men harm Madeline, who remained oblivious to the situation.

“?! There’s another brat?!”

The men noticed my existence, but I achieved my objective of alerting Madeline to the dangerous circumstances.

“Barrett! Who are those people?!”

“I’ve no idea! But they certainly don’t seem to be friendly!”

I joined up with Madeline and prepared ourselves for a potential assault.

…If possible, I’d prefer to avoid getting into a fight.

Because we weren’t in our home country, the Bramshal Kingdom, but rather in the neighboring Salencia Kingdom. I was afraid any incident here might escalate into a full-blown conflict between the two kingdoms.

I waited for the enemy to make a move while keeping Madeline in check as seemed eager to rush out at any moment.

Then…

“Big Bro, what do we do?!”

“…We don’t have much choice. We’re leaving.”

“What?! B-but we haven’t fulfilled our assigned quota yet?!”

“Enough chatter! More people showing up would only complicate matters. Let’s get out of here, now!”

“W-wait for me!”

As if my prayers were answered, the men withdrew. If they had realized we were exchange students, things would have gotten dangerous because our hands were tied.

“W-who were those guys…?”

“Beats me. But they made a quick getaway once they realized they’d been spotted. It’s clear they weren’t supposed to be here.”

“You’ve got a point…”

We should definitely report this matter to the academy as soon as possible.

Afterward, we returned to Annette and waited for rescue.

Not long after, Miss Teixeira and the teachers of Randolph Academy descended into the bottom of the hole using levitation magic.

We were safely rescued and put the dungeon behind us, but soon after we reunited with Tayte and the others, I reported the suspicious men.

“Hmm… I see…”

I reported them to a male teacher, the head of the year of Annette’s grade. He crossed his arms for a while as he groaned, and before long he said, “I’ll go report this to the principal,” and then he left.

“I was so worried…”

“I know. Sorry for worrying you, Tayte.”

Whispering, I embraced Tayte, who had tears in her eyes.

It was evident that she had been incredibly anxious…

I was touched by Tayte’s feelings—yet little did I realize at that moment that this incident was going to take an unexpected turn.
